The anti-smoker issue: I’ve experienced that at least 10 times and I’m no longer young. It is mostly older men, but Karens make themselves known all too often as well. OP wasn’t the jerk - she was rather polite TBH. We are addicts, not idiots. Comments aren’t needed nor are they appreciated. When smoking becomes illegal, or if we’re caught smoking somewhere that is illegal, fine. Go ahead and call us out. Until then, be aware that if someone tries to “helpfully” point out my addiction is bad for me, I’ll tell them that their attitude spreads more filth than my addiction does. F them all.

When he told the clerk what he wanted the 3,000 year old woman behind him said "You know those cause cancer" He replied "Yes ma'am but they prevent murder." making the customers behind her burst out laughing which offended her even more.🏴☠

The customer is always right in matter of taste. Meaning the employee can't judge a customer based on a purchase, the could order a Sunday with mustard onions and pickles on it and have every right to do so.

It's also only part of a phrase. The entire thing goes: “The customer is always right in matters of taste.” That means, if I worked at a boutique and this lady tried on a gaudy, ugly dress, then asked me if it looks good, I'm supposed to say yes because I want her purchase it and, naturally, because I want to make the commission. It doesn't mean that they are completely without fault and never wrong. That's it and that is all.
I'm not a smoker, but if I was in that Op's situation back when I worked in retail, I would've said
"Oh don't worry, I work in retail so I'm clearly not a human being. So I don't have to worry about lung disease."
My response would have been, “who the heck do you think you are, interfering with MY choice of relaxation, hmn?”
I'm not against my hubby smoking (he's a heavy smoker) but I definitely refuse him getting anyway near our baby while still smelled like it

I hate to say it, but story 4 I am not on the Original Poster's side. My Great Grandfather nearly died from cancer that was caused by him smoking. Cigarettes aren't worth the money and people think it's okay to 🚮 instead of properly disposal them. Vaping isn't any better. People have died from both of these, and I remember when I was little my mom would smoke in the car and would SUFFOCATE me since I wasn't able to roll down my window.

About the smoking woman... Older men sometimes want to "save" the damsel in distress. I call it "white knight syndrome". Also, unsolicited advice, while sometimes good advice, is seldom welcome. Doctors telling overweight people to lose weight is a big one. We fluffy people KNOW we are fat. We know we would be healthier if we lost weight. Harassment rarely works as an incentive. Smokers know they would be better off quitting, too. Being reminded of our " shortcomings " isn't helpful. 🤦🙄🤷

The person in story 4 is so totally the jerk. Obviously if you stand around smoking bystanders are going to notice it, i doubt the guy was just "looking for a way to talk to a pretty young woman" And that he rather just didn't like people blowing cancer into bystanders lungs.
That's second to last story is pretty standard behavior for a lot of smokers. People try to convince people not to smoke, the smoker basically tells that person off, and then years down the line and this is admittedly a worse case scenario,that same person ends up speaking to a bunch of kids at a school assembly about the dangers of smoking through a hole in their neck.
Story 1: As a fellow professional cook; dont ever EVER carry your personal knives with you outside of your home and/or work, especially if they are engraved. I also laughed so hard when she offered him $50. A lot of those good bags/cases are worth more then that. If a good cook/chef is telling you they spent a lot of money on a single knife, they are not kidding. Karen's dont seem to realize that cameras are everywhere nowadays. I cringed even more when she complained to the actual restaurant.
Story 2: Entitled Medusa are Kraken are hilarious new slangs for Karens, especially Medusa. On that note, how in the hell did they even allow Medusa there?? It doesn't even appear that she was an invited guest, more like a gate crasher. Also, i laughed hard again when 'decent husband' said he was going to divorce her. Makes you wonder why he married her to begin with. I always hate the "customer is always right" line. Makes me blood boil.
Story 3: You always have to love when people think that they are "experts" when they know pretty much nothing. OP isn't a jerk at all, the SIL is though. Good on the OP for telling her off.
Story 4: Even though smoking is gross and not good for you, and noted by the OP, but the OP isnt a jerk. Mind your own business and don't be condescending about it. I dont think the old guy was using it as a way to talk to a younger woman, i think its just a classic case of non-smokers bothering smokers.
Story 5: OP is definitely not a jerk, but the 'church group' sure are. You definitely need to rest and recover from any kind of surgery. Taking away his phone to let him recover is not a form of control here at all and definitely not a killjoy.

Nope nope nope.... the guy telling the woman smoker it's bad for her was MANSPLAINING. A man is not entitled to her attention, she does not have to be nice when a guy bothers her, and deciding it's misplaced anger on her part because it happened before is not only condescending but dismissing her rights to her own autonomy and feelings.

Okay, about the first story, how insane of a parent do you have to be to let your kid play with a chef's knives of all things. Imagine if that kid got cut on one of those knives. The guy carrying them could get thrown under simply because the Karen is a terrible mother. If I were the original poster, I would've just pushed the kid off. The Karen and her kid need a serious wake-up call.
Story 1: tools of trade can be expensive no matter what that lady was in the wrong for wanting to shortchange him and for wanting to allow her kid to play with KNIVES of all things not to mention her getting the manager to fire him because she was too stupid to pay attention to his different uniform.
Story 2: so a party crasher who demanded vegan options thought the party was about the guests not the Guest of honor not to mention trying to pull the customer is always right card when they aren't shopping let alone the phone being any of her business. hope that guy wins custody if he ever hopes to break that bratty behavior, he'll need it.
Story 3: Justified jerk know-it-alls are annoying especially when they're giving bad advice.
Story 4: Honestly while i believe smoking should stop it was none of the old guy's business.
Story 5: people need time to rest after surgery that includes talking, texting, and visits being off the table for a bit.
always remember the 2nd part to that age-old phrase, "The Customer is always right, in matters of taste". Yes, that's the full quote, it means, that if a customer wants to buy something let them buy it, not to cater to their every need.

Last story, when I had my 1st seizure & 100% lost my memory, when my husband & I were @ the ER (didn't know it was seizures yet) he called my parents to let them know (we're very close) he told me he had to take the phone away bc my mom kept asking me QT's I couldn't answer & was getting rly upset... sometimes caring can do harm.
The story with the cigarette: I only say something when I am forced to be close to a smoker without a chance to get away, because I HATE the smell. For example: When I have to drive with a coworker (and yeah, even if we drive in mya coworkers car) I politely ask them to not smoke the cigarette one minute before we get into the car because I am unable to bear it. Thats literally all I do. When I am outside with someone who smokes, I take a few steps away and try to not get into the direction of the smoke. Because it's their own business if they want to ruin their health as long as I not get affected.
True, being a smoker i know that how much some people hate that smell. I always smoke in places where other don't have to take that smell, but still once in a while some of my coworkers will ask for lift and say how bad this smell is( and then they will ask for lift again).
I have lately ask one of them to bear the smell if he wants a lift and even smoked in the car, he tolerated it pretty well( as he is able to save when he takes the lift).
I found it pretty rich when people who abuse alcohol tell us how bad smoking is for health( worse than alcohol).
In the second story, I think it might be too late for the kid to change so it would be better for the Decent Husband to leave Entitled Kraken with Entitled Medusa.

Nah, kids are capable of learning a lot very quick. This is some shit I might’ve pulled when I was a kid if cellphones were capable of playing games back then. I learned pretty quick that behavior wasn’t acceptable once my mom stepped in and explained why the behavior was wrong, the kid just needs a capable parent to not be undermined by his entitled wife.
Story 1: My question is why was the OP walking around the store with his knives in the first place? That's just weird and leaving them in his car means this wouldn't have been an issue.
Chef here, knife bags get stolen from cars way more often then you. When you or someone you know has over $1000 stolen and it’s your profession you do 1 of 2 things. Either buy cheap stuff and don’t care or guard your tools with your life

Being a chef myself, too right some knives can cost $30 for a paring knife and a 30cm chefs knife could cost you from $80-$1000. For a basic apprentice knife set, start up kit $600.
I have only one rule, no one uses, washes, touches, sharpens, especially sharpen. You can ask to use them, but no.
The full phrase is “the customer is always right in matters of taste” as in you have to let them pick/buy something even if you think it’s ugly, not that the customer is correct about everything and has power over employees
It’s stories like this that reinforce my opinion that “entitlement” is a hereditary disease that spreads from unknown sources. “Entitlement” causes manic tendencies, narcissism and complete unawareness of the world around you. I recommend you stay safe and be wary of approaching/being approached by anyone you believe to have contracted “entitlement”

As a person working in customer service, some people really do think that they are entitled to anything they ask for. That woman was an absolute jerk and her entitled just disgusts me.
Someone once tried to steal my family's kitchen knives. My mom was pissed, and we don't even have expensive knives. Don't steal cooking knives from a chef! Well my mom isn't a professional chef, but she worked as a chef for her mom's bar I believe, and she is generally a really good cook. She also bakes the best pies. Anyway, just don't steal from people! And don't try to buy knives off someone only to let your 6 YEAR OLD CHILD WHO SHOULDN'T EVEN BE USING SCISSORS THAT AREN'T SAFETY SCISSORS play with them! I don't care how careful that kid is, it's going to become a disaster because little kids are way too curious to be around a sharp object. Or at least, I was. When I was little, I managed to get a hold of a steak knife at a restaurant and got too curious and touched the blade. I was gentle and didn't cut myself, but not all kids would be gentle.

I'm a guy and I've definitely experienced the thing where a total stranger starts giving me shit for smoking. It's almost always been older guys too... The one time I snapped about it was when some guy stopped in his car by the sidewalk where I was to lecture me from his rolled down window, and I had just gotten clean from opioids like barely a week and a half earlier. I explained this to the guy and was then like, "Dude, naturally I've got bigger concerns on my mind right now... How about I kick one bad habit at a time and you let me do it in fucking peace.". I was still kinda sick yet and was experiencing some really bad cravings at the time, so I was totally not in the mood. Believe it or not he actually backed down and apologized, said that he understood completely, and then he congratulated me and wished me luck in recovery. I immediately felt like a dick and apologized for popping off on him, but he was very understanding. That was like 10 or 11 years ago now. But yeah, I'm clean today so I'm glad I stuck to it lol.
