How is he so charming? I guess it’s the contrast. He really means it. He’s always so gruff and rough and rude, so to hear him give Shepard not just a compliment but something as vulnerable and genuine as this, it really makes Zaeed feel human.
Unless I'm mistaken, this was Robin Sachs' last role before he tragically passed, and he knocked it out of the park. Zaeed is easily among my top three companions along with Garrus and Tali. He and Kasumi are the only interesting human companions, too.

In Mass Effect 2 I got his anger, I understood WHY he behaved and did the things he did but I've never played renegade Shepard. Because I am a paragon. He needed his violence and rage for his survival but to me unnecessary violence is wrong so him and my Shepards always butt heads. Then I saw him hang out with Garrus. They joked and made my home appliances accidently Shepard-cidal. They are very similar and Garrus' inability to say 'I love you' the majority of the time and and this satisfying confession here just.... makes me miss the real bioware, the old bioware. Ran off on a tangent oops!
My favourite "hidden" dialogue is when you go through the Geths memories and Sheperd asks why the Quarians have masks on. Legion says because the memories are trying to line up with what Shepherd has seen and he hasn't seen one without the mask. If you romanced Tali in the 2nd Shepherd corrects him with "ehem one. I've seen one without her helmet"
Legion: "How many creators have you witnessed without their masks on?" Shepard: "Well... one..." Legion: "... Well then your experience does not match with our historical data."

I always thought it would be a cool potential for comic relief if Zaeed gradually formed a twisted kind of fatherly feelings toward Shep as they became friends, since he seems to be old enough to be Shep's dad. Absolutely nothing sexual or romantic, I mean something like "watch how things were done in the good ol' days, kid", maybe some misplaced patronizing of "the young and stupid" from "the old and wise". Gotta admit, that old geezer was awesome.
Stuff like this is why I LOVE this game. The characters are so well done and they always surprise you. Wish I knew how to actually get this dialogue to happen. That's a hookup that should have been allowed in the game.

i recieve much 4 season merle dixon vibes from zaeed badass, soft at the very deepest at heart, truly loving even though they don't know how much they need these feelings lost hand, older than other group members, always was taught to fight respect their companions and leader more than any one in their group love these men
Never payed zaeed much though past him being a gruff, tough Merc, but listening too him, you realise he's less of wayward Merc and more of a human with heart who got caught up in violence and vengeance. He's a great avatar for how human nature can be irl, we can get so caught up in day to day shit, we forget that were human and identify only with out things and goals.
Played a full on renegade male Shep and Zaeed was my guy for every mission. Was sad yoy don't see him much in 3. I didn't get involved with any of the other characters on an intimate level but man if he was an option it would have been time for some serious manly love.

All voiced protagonists will eventually hit some form of "cringe". They have to voice for hour after hour. At some point theyll have a bad day at the office that just has to be put into the game due to time constraints. Personally though I think femshep sounds best when like this. Jen Hales natural voice. Its her "dirty harry" voice I dont like. Just not convincing. Shes at her best when voicing softer characters. Its like Mark Meer when trying to threaten. Not bad but the guy just has tons of comedic charisma. Sounding like the biggest badass in the galaxy will naturally be held back a bit. So while I can agree Shepard (both of them) will sound cringe - I like Femshep when she softens her voice.
