I'm an old geezer-old enough to remember the Columbia House subscription service from the '70s! I actually had a subscription back then. Over the too many years and too many moves, I got tired of hauling all my vinyl around and got rid of all but about 100 records with real sentimental value to me. Now that I'm getting back into vinyl, I'm very fussy. I know what I want. For better or worse, I use streaming services for any exploration or horizon-broadening I might do. But when it comes to buying vinyl, my approach is pretty targeted. I really only want to buy records I really want to own. As such, these services are simply not for me. The problem I have is that there are too many places to look for new releases and pre-orders. It's overwhelming. As an example, I stumbled across the Popol Vuh Essential Collection sets (which I did want because '70s electronic and Krautrock is one of my interest areas) by complete fluke. I WISH there was some sort of better way of keeping on top of what's coming or just been released. Maybe a video offering tips and advice about that someday? 🙂
My feelings exactly. I have my own record club: I choose a record I want each month on my own, eg, perhaps to replace something from my collection, and then I search for the best used version within a certain price range.
I used to subscribe to Britannia back in my 80’s but found their selections poor and it was impossible to unsubscribe so I would be very wary of subscribing for something similar again.
Monthly VMP country for me. Picked up Iris Dement and Emmylou Harris so far. Like their releases. Dipping my feet in.
