Vinyl Post: Could This Record Club Bring in More Young Record Collectors?

I've seen many record subscription services come and go over the years; it's a very competitive space where, to survive, you have to be the best of the best or at least bring something new to the table. Vinyl Post caught my attention as a little different from most. Their service is a monthly record club where subscribers receive indie music pressed on a postcard. Subscriptions start at $5.99/m...

    Hi! I have the MoFi UltraDeck with the MasterTracker cartridge. Do I need to use a mat, since it has a Dalrin platter and they say that you don’t need a mat for this turntable? Someone is using the Wooden Bull Leather and Cork mat. I’m not sure if I should use one or not. And if so, what adjustments should I make on the tonearm? Thank you!

    Well done Mark.. totally agree with you on everything said ?? But i would like to give my feelings on this journey by saying that the best way to start if you have a small budget is go for the Vintage second hand item's which will give everyone new to vinyl what a great thing it is to play records & understanding that the step forward is the best way to go when starting out the first time & enjoy.. because systems can be replaced but damaged vinyl records once damaged stay damaged & at £20 plus is a lot of money.

    Actually, holding the brush at a about a 10 or 15 degree angle to the groove, like a sideways snow-plow, helps to direct dirt not picked up toward the outside, so after doing about 2 turns, pull the brush slowly toward the outside, and then pull it off the record. That has always worked for me!

    If my vintage preamp has a “Mono” setting, and I install a Mono Cartridge and Stylus, would I keep my preamp setting on “Stereo” instead of switching to “Mono?” It seems to me that the preamp “Mono” setting attempts to compensate a stereo cartridge playing a mono record….and this “compensation” is not needed if I use a true Mono Cartridge and Stylus. Thanks in advance for responding!

      Thanks Robert. From my understanding, since you'll only be picking up a mono signal, applying the mono switch will do, in effect, nothing. It won't do any harm either though.

    I'm not pretty confident in these kind of devices, but I opted for the Clamp It designed by Pro-Ject specifically for Debut series. I hope a reasonable improvement but I'm not sure if it will be enough noticiable. Anyway, I reject to put an extra weight consisting in 300 - 500 gr. Depending on the turntable, it can be very stressing for the engine.

I'm still playing my PS2 games I've gotten in my 20ths and there is nothing more enjoyable than sitting down and listen too a record of a favorite piece of classical music. Do you think the Atom Phono is worth the extra cost over the Fosi Box X2 that you previously reviewed? I'm just getting into vinyl and likely to buy the Fluance RT82 and for the time being and using my existing Sonos system with the phone preamp connected to the line-in on a Play 5 Gen 2. I'll likely upgrade to a more traditional analog setup outside of my Sonos system, but I'm not there yet. Thanks.

      Nice. The Fluance RT82 has a nice upgrade pathway to the RT85, so good choice. As for the Fosi, the Atom Phono is significantly more natural sounding than the Fosi. The Fosi is amazing for the price though, but is, to my ears, a little more "colored" in a nice musical way. This Atom Phono is also noticeably better built.

    It's a pity, but the quality of this device is like cheap Chinese junk - as soon as it was unpacked and assembled, I had to return it to the seller, because the vacuum arm was crooked and did not even touch the vinyl record - there was a 1mm gap on one side, a 6mm gap on the other - a total nightmare, I do not recommend anyone to participate in the lottery of quality.

    I can't describe the aroma of coffee, but I know what it is when I meet it. 😮 I bought my first CD in 1988, and even then I thought there was something strangely lacking in the sound. Extraneous noise is part of any live performance - unique reverberations, shuffling feet, people coughing, people breaking wind 😮, etc. Extraneous sound is part of the music. It's the digital that's imperfect, not the analogue. I can't describe what I like about vinyl, but I know I prefer it.

  • @michaelfidler8218
    @michaelfidler8218 6 днів тому

    It's a nice bit kit. Very useful even if you update your phono section, you can still use it as an eq. for those tricky discs. In relation to the noise comparison with the Mani, the latter uses the OPA1612, which while featuring a very low level of voltage noise also exhibits enough current noise to generate significantly more voltage noise through high-impedance MM cartridges to put the overall level of noise much higher than what we might experience with the lowest cost audio op-amps (NJM4580). This is done to make it compatible with MC cartridges that benefit from a lower level of voltage noise and don't care about current noise as they have coil impedances in the tens of ohms, not tens of kilo-ohms. The more budget phono preamp market is definitely more saturated, but I reckon it has enough USPs to do fairly well!

    • @soundmatters
      @soundmatters 2 дні тому

      Thanks Michael. Appreciate the technical insights; MM/MC compatibility comes with a bit of a trade-off. It's great that the Atom Phono remains useful once someone upgrades as you say. I need to get back onto your MM Pro review. Will email you.

    In Hi-Fi the most important things are the transducers. That is to say things that things that convert between electrical and mechanical energy. These are Microphones, cartridges, and speakers. Everything else does have an impact, eg amplification, but in orders of magnitude it has to be transducers. So if you have a vinyl rig then your cartridge is up there. Short point: MC is overwhelmingly better than MM. But it is not a free lunch. They are more expensive to start with, the styluses are not readily replaceable, and the phono stage will inevitably cost more. Second short point: go digital. However I have had a MM cart (Ortofon 2M Bronze) and it did the job.

    First of all when you buy a brand new car you wouldn't dare take a microfiber cloth or velvet duster and wipe the dust off dust off the brand new paint. What's missing in all these kits is a can of air spray. First BLOW OFF the dust that you can. What's remaining then you use a binder, your solution of coice and spray liberally on it holding it sideways and let it drip off. Basically a rinse. Notice these two steps I haven't touched the record yet. Then you use your choice of medium to wipe off the excess liquid. Be it a microfiber cloth or velvet brush. NEVER rub dust into a record.

    I've always thought how does the Rega/ Audio Technica carbon compared to the goldring E1 what is carbon, that's a very nice sounding cartridge. be nice to have a comparison!! between the two? maybe you could do that? don't think there's anything out there nobody's done a comparison between the two I think the E1 will win.

    Record cleaning is no different from washing your new vehicle. Never use the same water twice. First rinse. Then micro foam to distribute evenly on the record. Let sit WITHOUT scrubbing. Allow the foam to just work on it's own. Rinse with warm water. Then use micro foam to wash the actual record using a VERY light touch with a microfiber brush of your choosing. I like a painters edge trimmer. (Rinse it thoroughly with warm water before using on second record) The rinse with a nice medium warm spray and let dry 24 hrs or use a vacuum type cleaner like a nitty gritty to suck and dry the record. Now you'll havea fantastic time listening to vinyl. Cheers.
