  • I was asked recently to discuss the SHTF channels or frequencies that are included with the radios sold by Better Safe Radio and to see what channels or frequencies are active in my area. So I set up the Wouxun GMRS radios I have from Better Safe Radio that include the SHTF programming and took them down into Colorado Springs to give a listen and describe what I am scanning. The KG-UV9G Pro which the higher end of the two radios I currently have is able to hear the Wide AM/FM receive from 76-180 MHz, 230-250MHz, 350-512MHz, 700-960MHz Wide & Narrow Bands.
    The KG-916 is only a UHF receive radio and covers 400-480MHz receive. Lets see what this SHTF pre-programmed deal is all about.
    I have started a crowd fund account for donations to the channel and memberships if desired as well as a Patreon account for membership as well. Definitely no obligation to donate but if you would like to see exciting new radios and equipment for product reviews a donation or membership would go along way in providing the monies to get these items. Once I do thorough product review and some tutorial videos of an item I will be hosting giveaways of the items through this UA-cam channel.
    Please see below for the crowdfund and patreon links as well as my affiliate links and discounts to different vendors.

    Mike, one thing to remember about LMR channels is that they may not be national. For example, the American Red Cross West is just that, a Western repeater assignment, so what you were hearing was probably some fast-food drive-thru or some other company on that ARC frequency. Also note (for viewers) that there are also many other services programmed into these radios, not just that bank of SHTF freqs, such as Marine, AIR, MURS, HAM, Rail, and useful intel might be heard on some of those during a SHTF event (not likely much or anything during peaceful times). :)

      Thanks Mark. I agree with the other radio services but I think the comment that I responded too asked specifically about the SHTF scanning. I think the programming you put in these is great and saves the owner so much time in not having to look all that up and program in themselves. Ham-Solo K0FYR

    One thing we know about Mark is, he never, ever half steps. I also agree with you that, when the order is given, those channels/frequencies will absolutely be buzzing with activity. Thanks for sharing. KC3UEE/WRPD614

    I bought the uv9g-pro preprogrammed from BetterSafeRadio, and I got the red programming cable. My problem is Wouxun does not show a program download for this radio? they show other uv9- model but not one listed similarly on BSF's program kit.
    I was hoping for some sort of a simple how to back-up the 800+ channels they put in my radio?
    HOW or WHERE do I find out how to backup my channels?
    thanks

      The programming software is on the Better Safe Radio website under that model. Download the software and then read from the radio first and that will bring all 800ish channels onto the computer and save that as a baseline programming file before you make any changes then copy and rename the copy to active file with date and manipulate the copy. Thank you very much for this test! I would also enjoy learning what you hear on those ‘other-than-SHTF’ pre-programmed channels during your travels (as time allows).

    In my experience using a Baofeng as a scanner is very ineffective due to it's extremely slow scan rate and lack of "pause" when it finds an active freq. Though for the price it's better than a poke in the eye. For my shtf needs I use a Bearcat BC-125AT scanner. It does about everything you need for a shtf scanner for about $120. And it charges (and prograns) usiing a standard usb cable, which is ideal for shtf use.

      Yeah I was looking at the S100 or S200 from Uniden for P25 possibility as well. Ham-Solo K0FYR

    I deleted all the programmed channels. What works in LA isn't so good in Northern NY. KG-UV9PX is great though!

      I definitely don’t use those much either. I guess it’s ok if you have no experience and want to monitor the big bad government but most are digital now and trucked anyway. Ham-Solo K0FYR

    Good to have if you live in the States or visit. I will save them and reinstall them if I make it to the States next year. I still want to get an SDR or two and a dedicated portable scanner one day too. I carry a HT HF and CB radio in the car and a Tecsun PL-330 with some tools etc. Just need a new first aid kit. You never know where you will be when SHTF, cheers for the video, i havent seen anyone do a video on those pre-programmed frequencies before. 🍻👍🤓

      Thanks. Yeah it is good to be prepared. I heard the Uniden Home Patrol 2 or the SDS100 are great scanners that have a gps feature that can auto load frequencies of agencies based on your location. Ham-Solo K0FYR

    Would like to know what would I be able to pick up in Toronto Ontario Besides the busy hotels using them ??

      Actually that I can’t tell you. The SHTF programming even on the KG-UV9G Pro KG-UV9GX and the KG-UV9PX are all U.S. government and local and state municipality frequencies. I don’t think any of those channels would apply in Canada. However the radio would be great for transmitting and reception of whoever you did want to program in and talk to. Ham-Solo K0FYR WRMV759

      I have a file with a code plug for the GMRS radio that has most of what you’re probably looking for. What make and model radio are we talking about? Ham-Solo K0FYR WRMV759

    When the fcc made everything to be digital. It screwed everything up the city and county police department here are sad they can't hear each other or the radios don't put out

    • @bettersaferadio
      @bettersaferadio 2 роки тому

      There are still many cities, even some large ones like Long Beach, CA (Pop. ~500k), that are still on analog. Also, in some areas where the city agencies are now digital, some of the county freqs may still be on analog. As well, during a real SHTF event, many may fallback to analog.

    Does the Smiley Antenna Slim Duck 465MHz 5/8 Wave GMRS cover the scanner needs? Seems like adding the Remtronix REM-820S to the kit would be a good decision.
    What do you think?

    • @Ham-Solo
      @Ham-Solo  Рік тому

      So generally most antennas do well as RX (receive antennas) without issue. It usually comes down to TX (transmit) where antennas really make a difference. That being said a 465MHz centered 5/8 wave antenna should do really well with the vast multitude of the scanning needs of the SHTF programming in the radio. There is a mixture of 2m, 70cm, and then a small portion of 700 and 900 that are mostly general use channels and not really assigned. The Remtronix REM-820S is specifically a 700-900 MHz antenna for scanning police systems that operate in those frequencies. Now most police agencies use P25, EDACS or some other trunked system and you’ll need a radio that can do those digital trunking modes for it to be effective. All the SHTF programming in the Wouxun radios are analog channels because digital will probably not work in a SHTF situation. Not sure how well the Remtronix REM-820S will do with the lower 2m (130-174) range and the 70cm (430-480) range when it’s designed for 700-900. Just a thought. Ham-Solo K0FYR WRMV759
