The USB-C charging gives you more ways to charge it, and you won't need a 110V wall outlet for the usual 12V adapter. You can use a USB adapter that plugs into 110V, a vehicle's 12V jack, a power bank/solar panel, etc. Even though you can get batteries with micro USB charging for the Baofunks, it's much better, IMO.
Ive been seeing a few of these reviews with so many hand held radios that I begin to scramble their names, however the reviews are all very informative, I got to see the reviews again as also the reviews are from different angles
As always, informative and entertaining video. Waiting on the Wouxun KG905 to get back in stock. They say "early April". We are there and anxious. A couple of things in one of your earlier reviews sold me on the KG905. One being battery capacity. It comes with a 2600 mAh battery and has a available, a 3 Ah plus battery. Those are good numbers for a radio you might need in the wilderness. The other, was a stiff volume control, probably much like Motorola XTS-2500's and XTS5000's I have used had. I hate a loose volume or squelch knob. Really good radios have resistance to the knob turning so it is not accidentally turned up or down. The Radioddity, it intrigued me as far as its cost. I quit reading when I found out it only has a 1500 mAh battery. Deal killer for me.
I followed the link to the Wouxun KG-UV9G and there is a link there to a PDF that shows all the pre-programmed frequencies. They include Military Air band as well as Civil. I downloaded the PDF so I can try some of the freqs in my Uniden BC125AT scanner (affordable 500 channel scanner that includes Civil & Military Air bands), and what won't work in that I can try listening to with my SDR.
Love your vids man, informative and amusing. UV9G looks like a winner to me. Currently run Kenwood TK3312’s but if ever they need replacing, liking the UV9G. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing info your reviews of these radios. I bought some radios in the lower price range. They are good and not a big hit to the wallet, but now looking to invest in a better radio with further distance. You mentioned some great choices.
Thank you Nota for your no nonsense info. and helping me get through the confusing world of two way radio, you help me save $ buy the right rig for my needs.
I wondered why there was no test for the GMRS license then I tried to buy one and my patience has never been tested more in my life. Figured it out thanks to the guide though.
Sev eral years ago I purchased a pair of BTech GMRS V1's. There was not a lot of choice in the market at that time. My understanding was that they were 5 watt radios. And at one time they were. I emailed the company and they indicated that they had to drop to 2 watts in order to meet FCC rules. Of course, that is not really correct. I think that what happened was that in order to make it legal to operate on all 22 channels, they had to have a 1/2 watt setting and there are only two possible power levels. The alkaline battery pack uses AAA cells which are greatly underpowered compared with AA cells which cost the same and have 3 times the energy storage. Finally, one unit drained the batteries within a couple of days. I returned the unit and it was replaced but that unit also had a defect in that it would not receive commercial FM radio which I find useful. This could not be corrected using software. The company will not accept telephone calls. Everything has to be done via email. I just can not recommend them.
I have watched a few of your vids ! Thank you Sir for the No-Nonsense Reviews! I already had my ham license for tech but wanted to get the YL interested in radio for emergencies! Obviously , this never comes to fruition! SO , I have mostly Kenwoods but had won a uv5r from the club. When I purchased GMRS radios, I believe I went with a 2 pak Baofeng GMRS ! I was not concerned with Bells & Whistles and although they get a bad rap and are what they are? They work and that is good enough for me since few to no one is on them here! As you know , during an " Emergency" event no one is going care what you are running YET>>>> I want to encourage others to get the GMRS license TOO! WHY ? It is only $30 bucks for 10 years and no testing like HAM ! My opinion is - Get Licensed or GET OFF the bands! Lets keep these dedicated Frequencies for the people whom did the work! Please help monitor these clowns playing where they should not be playing! Thanks Sir ! GB Mark
I am looking forward to the day you start doing firearms reviews. I am guessing by tour cleaning mat, your a 2a guy as well.. Thanks for the radio info!!
I ordered a UV9G-PRO about a month ago - hope it is worth the wait because it is probably going to be another month or so before it ships. Wouxun seems to have hit a bullseye on this model and the demand is nutz! Even the KG-1000G mobile/base is a unicorn.
I own 2 of the Wouxun KG-805G radios, I feel it's the best value for the money. I am just speculating here, but the KG-805G could be discontinued because the new KG-905G is out. Get some while you can.
I just checked and the GMRS license is $70. 😂 Someday hopefully they will lower the price. I could see paying $35 to use the free airwaves that no one owns. But $70 is a little dumb to use airwaves.
I think the KG-805G is the best bang for the buck (I love mine!). The KG-905G is worth the extra money for the IP55 rating and larger battery, but the KG-UV9G is overpriced. Never imagined a handheld GMRS radio would cost $170 lol. Although I know this channel is all about GMRS (and I actually prefer to talk on GMRS), but in my opinion a prepper needs a Ham radio that can transmit on multiple bands. Preferably the illegal radios (Bao-fe *cough cough" ngs). I'd want to be capable of transmitting on any band possible in the event of an emergency xD.
Then why would you buy an 805G that only does GMRS? You can't really have it both ways. Either get a UV9P and freeband it (not a dealer recommendation, BTW, says my lawyer), and don't bother with a GMRS cert. radio. But if you want as close as you possibly can to an amateur radio (in terms of features), and a decent scanner, but remain legal on GMRS, then the 9G is the ticket.
@@TheChico868 Almost all DMR radios are direct-conversion and very few of them have true dual receive in analog mode. Also, DMR is not allowed on GMRS. :)

❤ Your work, super informative. UV-5R and 5G seem very similar in programming. Your amazing. If I ever saw you laugh though, I'd fall outta my chair!!!😂
Thank you so much for your videos. They have been very helpful to me in learning about different radio options. I am eagerly awaiting delivery on a backordered Wouxun KG-905G radio and would love to see a video covering aftermarket antenna options for handheld GMRS radios. I saw one video where you mentioned a smiley antenna for a different Wouxun radio and another where you talked about a Nagoya antenna for the Baofeng, but I don't know if either would be good for the KG905G or why I might choose one over the other. I would love to know if there are other options available that should be considered, or if I even need to upgrade from the stock antenna. Thanks again for all the great information you put out, and I love your sense of humor.
The antenna that comes with the 905G is tuned for GMRS and it works just fine.. I have tested the Nagoya and the Smiley - and I was not able to detect any significant difference in coverage. I personally only change the antenna if/when I want something smaller that does not get in the way.
I have a UV-5R and the GT-5R (6 pack) and it was easy to program them with Chirp for GMRS. then I had to push a few buttons at the same time to open up the radio for GMRS frequencies. Or buttons first then upload programming. Either way all 7 radios work no problem. Except for the legal problem.
Would you mind doing a couple reviews on antennas, antenna types, vehicle mounts, pretty much something on the metal thingy that facilitates the radio sending the waves through the air.
Yes! I need to do an attic install. Looking at the Compactenna CB/2M/440 as my initial antenna, seems it is pretty versatile for someone just starting out.
I love your commentary and sense of humor. I know it goes over some people's heads, but fuck'em. Informative and amusing. Keep up the great work brother!
I agree with your observations regarding the FCC website. It's simply horrible. I got through the application process and wanted to pay, and it took another hour to figure out, and got through all their errors, just to pay them the money. Government at its "best".
The only one question I have... Why I have to pay to some government agency (FCC) some money, for the "license", not much, but still, to use the frequencies, and without any "professional test"? Means that anyone PAID the MONEY, to FEED the government agency, gets the permission!! ANYONE! ! ... And these frequencies are anyway ALREADY is dedicated to the people's (GMRS) use. Just PAY the MONEY !! It's not fair... It's just paying for the air around you for the right to breathe...
I don't like fees, and I don't like large government. The fee is dropping from $70 to $35 for ten years for whole family on april 19. If you have a family of five and five radios that is $35/"50 person years" or less than a dollar per person year.
@@teo2975 I knew that (about the fee reduction)... And, I do not have a "family of five"... It's not about the amount of money... It's about: some government agency (FCC) takes money from people for nothing... not even for any kind of "service" or "help", none is provided in return... I would somehow understand if they continuously monitor these frequencies and dispatch the emergency services, in case... Do they do that???
@@mikemordkovich7653 It's not for nothing. the FCC does do spectrum management to make sure that GMRS users don't upset the Public Safety bands (sometimes), and also the reverse. There isn't much enforcement of minor infractions, but they do take action when some yahoo decides to start an "FM" radio station on their GMRS "FM" radio, and part of your license fee goes to that. Its also what's known as a "barrier to entry," which has the effect of weeding out jerks that just want to screw around on the radio. That works in theory, but they broke it when they decided to mix the FRS and GMRS bands and allow the hybrid blister-pack radios many years ago. Those are no longer being authorized now, but it will take a few more years before most of those crappy toy radios are all broken and floating in the Pacific where they belong. ;) We will still end up with yahoos that have $35 though, but not as many as there would be if there was no license at all. Hell, I'd pay $100 or more if that meant fewer of them (that would still only be 2.3 cents/day, if you're counting).
thank you sir for not insulting us other spectrum people. i did purchase the 805g radio a week or so ago, and it is pretty nice. still waiting for my 905g. thank you for your reviews. is the interface on the 905 and 805 similar? thank you for your reviews, i'm happy with what i've just purchased after seeing your reviews. much better than my Motorola rig i bought previously. have you considered doing a software video on programing one of the radios - if you have, just point me in the right direction - but not the direction my wife points me to.
Love your videos, but sorry the KG-805G ( I had previously incorrectly typed "804" ) and KG- 905G GMRS don't appear to be able to scan for or receive the NOAA WX channels. They only Rx 400-470 Mhz ( UHF only plus the commercial FM radio stations on the 805). NOAA WX channels 1-7 are on VHF (162.400 to 162.550 Mhz in 25 Khz steps) and I can't seem to find specs on either radio in the owner's manuals that say they can RX those frequencies or have them built-in as pre-programmed (WX1-WX7).
I so love your videos, both humourous and technical. In one video he kissed a misunderstood hand held radio. I want to get into radio as part of my SHTF plan however I do not want to join the radio geek religion.

You can use a USB adapter that plugs into 110V, a vehicle's 12V jack, a power bank/solar panel, etc. Even though you can get batteries with micro USB charging for the Baofunks, it's much better, IMO.
dude's a freak! haha! comedy every time...i love it! thanks man..i'm a uv-5r gmrs villian myself. i'll see you on the trail sometime around crestline.
Front panel programming is a must-have for me... but that’s just me. Great review. Thanks.
Ive been seeing a few of these reviews with so many hand held radios that I begin to scramble their names, however the reviews are all very informative, I got to see the reviews again as also the reviews are from different angles
905g is the one to get. I have to get it before the year ends
Agreed. Bought one, loved it, two on backorder.
I'm waiting on the 905 as well. Had the same thought...we're in early April...
The 9G battery is 3.2 Ah, in case you missed that part.
Wade Dillworth
Now they are saying "late April".
🙁
I followed the link to the Wouxun KG-UV9G and there is a link there to a PDF that shows all the pre-programmed frequencies. They include Military Air band as well as Civil. I downloaded the PDF so I can try some of the freqs in my Uniden BC125AT scanner (affordable 500 channel scanner that includes Civil & Military Air bands), and what won't work in that I can try listening to with my SDR.
Out of all channels I seen when I needed help with my GMRS radio this channel help me out the most. Thanks my friend 👍🏼
This channel is so great- and love the Blade-Runner inspired music
What.....No Coffee?
learning a lot on your channel, thank you!
I very much appreciate your humor Sir Randy!
Love your videos. They get to the point and are spot on, along side with some great dialog.
Why oh why can't they all just USB-C ???? Great video. Thank you.
I look forward to see your videos, brighten my day
Very informative video, I am currently a ham, but discouraged by the click, I am now looking into the GRMS Radio and license .Thank You
I have watched a few of your vids !
Like your cleaning mat! I used to worry about what if you guys ran into bad stuff out on the trail in Cali-stan. Now, not so much. 👍
Noticed that too. Have the Brigadier model but it's a safe-queen.
Appreciate your videos. Tremendous help navigating the confusing world of radios!
I concur on the hassle with the FCC site. Just signed up for my license 3 days ago. Was issued over night.
Phrase of the century... "Pain in the... BbbbbITCH!"
Subscribed!
Great detail! objective, precise, to the point. Thank you! Understood
Turn the knob to 11 on this channel. It rocks!
I ordered a UV9G-PRO about a month ago - hope it is worth the wait because it is probably going to be another month or so before it ships. Wouxun seems to have hit a bullseye on this model and the demand is nutz! Even the KG-1000G mobile/base is a unicorn.
I have tested the GM-30 with repeater setup and it works great. I did add another antenna.
What antenna did you add?
Just bought a UV-5R, thanks!!
Thank you! For me, this video was TIME WELL SPENT
Best radio channel on the UA-cam! Much appreciated pimp!!!👍🏻🇺🇸🦍
Uv5r makes a great first gmrs radio . Plus if you drop one in a creek or run over it buy a new one for around 25$ .go Randy Go 👍👍👍
I just found your channel. Very informative. Most of all they are hilarious
Keep it up!!
Those prices are in DMR territory
@@TheChico868 Almost all DMR radios are direct-conversion and very few of them have true dual receive in analog mode. Also, DMR is not allowed on GMRS. :)
You know I've been watching your channel for some time now and I've grown accustomed to your funny jokes and such and it amazes me that you're such a good man and you really do care about people and what they believe in honestly, so I've got a question for you since I'm no longer a government slave or peasant and I don't play this game of getting a license to speak my truth I don't think anybody should go buy a stupid license that gives them a right to talk when they already got that right by god. What say you my friend
5 mins in, and still, no real knowledge. but entertained so still listening...
Thanks for the videos. Love your sense of humor. Will be following to learn more about GMRS and tech license
FCC price today is still $70. For 10 years. Got mine last week 10/14/21.
@@teo2975
I knew that (about the fee reduction)...
Another vote for software use tutorials. I don't care if you have a Mac or a mac n cheese.
You are correct! Thank you - I've added a correction to the info section.
Ordered 2 KG-905Gs based on your recommendation. They're still on backorder. Getting impatient, but I'm sure they're worth the wait.
I just placed an order for two of the BTECH GMRS-PRO 5W GPS radios and hope it’s as good or better as the radios mentioned in this video.
I so love your videos, both humourous and technical. In one video he kissed a misunderstood hand held radio. I want to get into radio as part of my SHTF plan however I do not want to join the radio geek religion.
Are there any Australians in this group. If so do we have something like the American gnrs licence without pledging my life to the radio gods
Literally the 4th(?) video of yours I’ve watched in a row. THANK YOU for dropping the pretentious “yOu BeTtEr HaVe A hAm LiCeNsE” BS.
another great video there. the nerd in me really likes the Wouxun KG-UV9G PRO, however the cheapass in me likes the 905g for its ruggedness. i will not confirm nor deny that i don't love the uv5r :)
Nerds unite! ;)
First video I’ve seen of yours. Immediately subscribed!
Great video as always Randy, thanks again for all the info.
Crap dammit...I officially need to work late as I've wasted time watching your vids! Love this stuff :)
Thank you so very much exactly what I was looking for great content
Thanks for the info and links.
Great video on these radios, very educational on
What to buy., Thanks.
Oh man, I'm a little concerned with my first GMRS purchase. I bought 2 rugged radios Moto Kit with their GMRS 2. Looking forward to getting it in the mail either way.
