Huntsville, Alabama 2024. My first “Big” Hamfest.
I went over to Huntsville, Alabama to attend my first big Hamfest. The Huntsville Hamfest is called the friendliest Hamfest and is supposed to be more laid back than Daytona or Orlando. I couldn’t tell you on that part as I’ve never been to those but this was pretty easy going. It was definitely interesting attending a Hamfest where the actual radio manufacturers go to it. I was able to say hi to Josh KI6NAZ from Ham Radio Crash Course as well as my friend Mike - K8MRD and also met Temporarily Offline in the Raddiodity booth where we commiserated on the Xiegu X6200 record and playback feature. Let’s check out inside.

Was able to do the software/firmware install on my Xiegu X6200 to version 1.01b which is still numbered 1.01. Seemed to go off without a hitch and my radio fired back up and went back on the air afterwards. It’s sad when that is the thing that we hope for when working on these radios, “I hope I don’t brick my radio by doing this update.” Once I got the unit updated I decided to take it out and ...

    It seems to be kind of hit or miss with radios. I’ve had to send back well over a dozen of my Motorola radios because of emissions. But I have several that have never had any problems. It’s not so much the manufacture. It seems to be more than individual radios. Oh and by the way, I absolutely love my TID Radio, H8 and my H3 awesome little radios. Just tried to change it to Narrow Band near the airport and as I thought it didn’t help. AM is a very wide band so changing to narrow just made it softer, over modulated, and more static. It sounds much better on Wide but is still not ideal for monitoring air band very well. Ham-Solo K0FYR

      @@Ham-Solo Not to get long winded here...but, I was curious as to the SWR match of the included antenna with my H8 (ham version) and whether or not that would cause the radio to heat up like it does when used on GMRS frequencies. I have one of the Surecom SWR/PWR (SW33 Plus) meters and I know it's hard to get a good reading on those antennas but I gave it a shot anyway. I compared the stock antenna with the HYS 771N (Nagoya 771 clone) which covers VHF 136-174 Mhz and UHF 400-470 Mhz. I figured the HYS would be a better match for it. The stock antenna clocked in with a reading of over 3:1 while the HYS was less than 2:1 on both VHF and UHF. I'll use it awhile with the HYS and see if the radio stays cooler since the antenna is a better match. In case you're wondering, I have a ham license (KG4CNA) and a GMRS license (WSDD519). My radio club has several members with both licenses and we also have a repeater up for our area. I like the H8, it's a very nice radio and programs very easily. One of the main problems these radios have is consistency...but is is a $50 dollar radio....not Icom or Yaesu.

    One last point: the Baofeng HT's have a REALLY bad habit of over-hyping the tx wattage, most fall around 4-5 that I've seen. The H8 claims of 10 watts are mostly verified. Saw a few test videos that showed between 9-10 watts on 2m and 70cm. I'd gladly choose the H8 over the UV-82, even with the extra cost, because of the ease of BT programming and the higher tx power.

    The TD-H8 (2nd gen) radios, the 10 watt versions, can be had on Amazon for as low as 30-some bucks. I got the package with radio/771 antenna/speaker mic/extra battery for about $60. Point: the cheapest H8 packages do NOT have USB-C charging, the slightly more expensive ones DO have USB-C charging. Some tx at 5 watts, some at 10, so paying close attention to the listing info is very important. I like USB charging so much I ordered a couple special batteries for a couple other HT's I have that do not have usb charging standard. Even replaced a couple HT's with other versions that do.

  • @darkynhalvos

    Appears the newer 2nd gen TDH8 radios have no overheat issues. BT programming via BT and USB-C charging is a blessing. At least for now it's my daily carry, although I do keep a few HT's in a shoulder bag just in case: 1 gmrs/1 CB/1 marine/1 aviation in addition to the H8 on my hip. 73 K4EFW

I have had that PackTenna EFRW for a couple of years now and have done easily a hundred POTA or SOTA activations with it and have never used a counterpoise wire with it. That being said I will tell you that the outside shielding of your coax feed line with a length of 25-35 feet is actually supposed to serve that function without the need for a separate counterpoise. On these new radios you can customize that with menu option 55 and choose a personalized ANI so that others with same radio can see who transmitted. @@skepticalmechanic I played the 100 watt game before and don’t like it. It feels like cheating. I had a 991A in my QTH before and traded it for a 897D. I also have an Icom 7300 but both of those stay in the house. My travel radios are my IC-705 and now this Xiegu X6200 both running QRP and I’ve activated 43 states for POTA and 39 states for SOTA using QRP power and it’s fine for me. Ham-Solo K0FYR

    Well, at least you know you can get plenty of contacts on 17cm lol. That rig seems to have a lot of great features, but just seem that big of an improvement over the 6100 for more money. Thanks for sharing. 73. KC3UEE

      @Ham-Solo Місяць тому

      @@jamesmcfarland2636 Absolutely as long as they are on analog UHF. It can’t do VHF 136-174 MHz or trunking systems or 700/800 MHz. I use a Uniden Bearcat SDS100 for our local P25 trucked Police and Fire. I wish we still simulcast to UHF it would be way easier. Ham-Solo K0FYR

    • @Ham-Solo
      @Ham-Solo Місяць тому

      @@jamesmcfarland2636 no problem. It does scan but unfortunately it is a UHF model that is relegated to 400-480 MHz. A lot of good scanning is lower VHF frequencies which you would need a different unit. The other radios even though very good as a superheterodyne transmitter have screen displays that don’t work very well in the sun and are almost twice the price. I do use another scanner that has great receive range from Uniden called the BC125AT and its range is awesome. You can’t transmit with it but it has exceptional listening capability for scanning. N6WIP: Thank you! I was ready to throw my MFJ-1899T as far as I could. I have downloaded the instruction sheet you mentioned and found the area for the 1899T. I can't wait to get out and try it. It's 107° outside. I'll wait for a cooler day. Please add a link in the description to help others find the proper download. Again, thank you. Oh yeah. Great to see you set up for Field Day and testing the new radio. I also love the PackTenna 🙂 BTW another option is to put the feedpoint of the PackTenna about 3' or more off the ground and slope the wire up to the tip of the mast. This makes it a little easier to deploy and the mast only has to hold up the light weight wire. 73 George KJ6VU ("Mr. PackTenna")
