The song is about a section of the novel For Whom The Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway, in which International Brigades soldiers of the Spanish Civil War attempt to escape the fascists with their stolen horses and are killed by enemy aircraft on a hill on which they are surrounded. (this is from Metallica Wiki). Master of Puppets next, please... you're gonna love it, its a masterpiece!

As a 41 year old guy, it' surprisingly nice to see young girls listening to REAL music and poetry by early Metallica, instead of going the "modern day shitty pop music" route. Greetings from Italy and keep on rocking.
The song is based on the book also called “For Whom The Bell Tolls” by Earnest Hemingway. It is about war, it’s about an American in the Spanish Civil War, and I guess Earnest Hemingway wrote based on his own first hand experience with the Spanish Civil War, and I think in general it’s meant to portray how brutal war is. - And between Megadeth or Jinjer, I personally would prefer Megadeth. As for what song, I sort of want to say In My Darkest Hour because it’s my favorite Megadeth song. But I have a feeling you might get bored about halfway through it, just because of how the song is laid out. So maybe I would suggest the song Countdown To Extinction, only because I feel like that’s a really easy song to digest for a first time listener. Or maybe À Tout le Monde, it’s good ballad type of song and probably one of their best regarded songs.

The title is from the Earnest Hemingway novel called For Whom the Bell Tolls. Hemingway was a Ambulance driver during WW1 and a reporter during the Spanish Civil War. The book deals with the futility of warfare in the face of the lethality of the latest weapons of the time (machine guns, tanks, bombers, artillery, etc) set in the Spanish Civil War.
This Metallica song is based on Ernest Hemingway's novel of the same name (For Whom the Bell Tolls), which chronicles a soldier's experience in Spain's Civil War (Hemingway was a reporter in that conflict). It is considered one of Hemingway's best novels along with The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and the Sea.
Seriously, one of METALLICA's best anthems but I love the one in their live record called METALLICA: S&M/ METALLICA &SYMPHONY, it's with the San Fransisco Symphony Orchastra.
For Whom the Bell Tolls refers to a church bell tolling at a funeral. So, it means those who have died. The book is named for the expression and the song references a part of that book.
