Something I've wondered about RAM in regards to "having more than you need will not improve speed". Is there any similarity to hard drives in the way that, as it gets more full, the performance starts to degrade? Meaning, is it just as fast to read and write to ram when you are at 80% capacity as opposed to only being at 20% capacity? Never heard anyone talk about that.

Thank you for this. I am a total newb when it comes to hardware and I appreciate the easy to understand vernacular. I did have a question about platforms. Ive seen DDR4 with Intel platforms. What are they and do they matter? Does it matter if your ram has intel platform but you have an AMD processor?
DDR4 is faster than DDR3 RAM. Your RAM must be compatible with your CPU, so if you have an AMD processor that doesn't support DDR4 then you cannot use it.
I noticed your responding to people so im going to ask a question, I'm a programmer and I need scripts to run as fast as possible, I also need to generate wordlists as fast as possible to support my hacking hobby, should I buy 32gb of ram for it as I do heavy multitasking. Thank you!
To be perfectly honest, I have no frame of reference for how much memory would be consumed at once by the activities you're describing. But I can tell you that (1) yes, multitasking-heavy workloads benefit from higher RAM capacities and (2) 32GB of RAM is already considerably higher than even many professional workloads can fill. So you could be relatively confident, if you *do* get that much RAM, that it would almost certainly be plenty for anything you might want to do with your PC.
I bought a used desktop for $300 on my local Craigslist. Specs are i7-4790, GTX 750ti, 1T WD HDD, Windows 10 Home, and to my surprised 32gb of DDR3-1600 (4x8gb). Not sure if I can even utilize all the ram as I don’t even game, but I do video edit and run some of my engineering programs.
Do you have a video explaining why you should clean a computer/computer terminology for people who know little about computers? My parents think I will "de-rail the servos" by trying to clean the visible layers of dust out of it.
Haha, unfortunately, no . . . but I think if you just tell them that a visibly thick amount of dust inside a computer can be a fire hazard, they might be willing to let you 'risk it.'
Tip I suggest 8gb ram 2/4 for the device 4/6 for the games you can decide how much ram it uses in the games master files And the amount of ram would matter since some programs tries to run slower if it has low ram available to it 16 ram is best if you use the same device in a family and most of the family runs games on the computer Hope you found this comment useful good days : )
Been watching almost a hundred tech videos for the past month, finally found one that convinced me 8 gb is enough for me. Perfect, just an hour after my 16 gb rams arrived...
God damn tremendous video. Seems from a Linus video that 8GB of Ram will allow you about 40 chrome tabs max. That is something I definitely do... and 4GB didn't allow nearly enough tabs. So I think 8GB will be the go for me. Being conscious of the 40 limit, should help me use less tabs, too.
Would coding need more ram? I want to use unity and on my way of laptop it couldn’t even run it, it was a new 2019 Microsoft laptop and wasn’t the best so I don’t really know if it was unity or just it.
That would depend what you're coding. In general, coding probably wouldn't require more RAM than some other workflows (e.g. 3D rendering and video editing). But since you mention Unity, we would recommend getting at least 8GB of RAM.
Basically, I have an old processor and graphic card (they’re even for a work station not gaming PC), and my game is fine with 150 to 300 fps, but after a time without restarting the game it starts lagging crazy, like lagspikes every second. Is this the problem? Is it the RAM that is the problem?
It's not impossible that RAM could be a factor, but it's also not very likely. To be more helpful, we would need to know more details: what are the exact parts of the build; what game is being played; and when you say lag, do you mean like high latency/ping, choppy frame rates, or input delay?
@@logicalincrements Prosessor: Intel Xeon X5550 (Two processors) Graphic Card: Quadro FX 4800, 64GB RAM, and this is choppy frame rates, no ping lag or input delay. The game I'm talking about is Minecraft. This game really doesn't need a lot of good stuff to run smoothly, it's just that sometimes I lag a lot.
It's extremely unlikely that RAM is your problem. That is a workstation PC, which has over four times as much RAM as the average user. The in-game issues for your situation are almost certainly coming from the pro-grade workstation CPUs and GPU. Neither of those parts are optimized for gaming in any way, and Minecraft almost certainly can not take advantage of dual CPUs. In particular---in terms of gaming performance---a build with an X5550 and a Quadro 4800 would typically fall somewhat below the lowest 'Destitute' tier of our general gaming build recommendation chart on our home page ( www.logicalincrements.com/ ), which is already the only tier of the linked chart that we don't recommend for running Minecraft. Under the circumstances, the lag spikes you're experiencing could be caused by any number of things: thermal throttling on one of the components, eventual accumulation of unfamiliar in-game software tasks for pro-grade parts, or something else.
While it does depend what kind of programs you want to run, the answer is very likely to be yes. 8GB should be sufficient for what you're describing (and if you find in the future that it's not enough, adding additional RAM is one of the easiest upgrades that can be made to an existing system).
question: Ive had this problem when picking ram for old pc or amd/intel is there anyway to tell if a ram stick will work 100% without going through the tested memory support list or is there anyway to tell its gonna work, really bad when get ram hit the power button system doesn't boot. fully undestand all the basics of ram
I think the only real way you can test RAM is putting it in a system and checking that it is functioning properly. Aside from that, there isn't much you can do as far as I know.
Ahh alright, it's because I'm thinking about getting a Noctua ND-H15 which quite bulky but I think it won't be a problem. My build will probably be very similar to your 4K editing build PC!!
So I've gotta Optiplex 990, currently I have 4 stick totaling 16gb.. I want 32.. I have on the way 16gb in two sticks.. Was going to pull two and install two and get 24? for now.. Is this extra ram going to help, the jotting in video.. Not steady when graphics are high. Was trying to get a smooth video plays. Is this possible to get?
Upgrading the RAM above 16GB will almost certainly have no effect on your ability to stream games. The only pieces of hardware that really matter for that are your CPU and GPU.
That PC appears to have an i7-8750H and a GTX 1070, which should be a solid computer for rendering/modeling work. In particular, it would have power that is comparable to that of the 'balanced price-to-performance' example build in our big guide article on building a PC for 3D rendering: www.logicalincrements.com/articles/building-pc-3d-rendering-animation
If memory is doubling every 2 years like the graph and experts say, I wonder why other forms of technology don't. For instance automobile manufacturing or space exploration ?
There should theoretically be no compatibility issue between a system that supports DDR3 RAM and DDR3L RAM---the latter just has multiple power modes which some systems can access.
RAM only really comes in one size. The total RAM amount will be a power of 2 in almost all cases I can think of, considering it is usually sold in 2 or 4 GB increments.
You can, but it may cause issues, depending on the system. As for 3x4GB, I believe that depends on whether your motherboard uses dual or triple channel memory.
Thanks for the info! I've heard some about RAM disks: seem like an amazing way to boost performance if your computer is on for awhile. Does it really though? Are there other bottlenecks?
+Little Keegs I personally don't know too much about RAM disks, though someone else on staff may. I'd be happy to look into it in more detail, but I believe this should be of help to you: www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2929058/ram-ramdisk.html
Just curious if I would sell my old ram online would the buyer by any chance have access to any stored info of mine? I'm aware of my Hard Drive but wasn't too sure if the RAM.
Well, that could be a factor. RAM is certainly an important part of an editing right---but RAM is not the MOST impactful part of an editing rig. I'd first be curious to know: what are the CPU, GPU, and primary editing software of the system?
Ok. I am looking at second hand laptops for sale, and most of them have 1-3 GB of RAM. As a 12 that just wants a small cheap laptop for general use, is it enough?
I can get a single stick of 8gb ddr4 ram really cheap right now. My thinking is I might increase it to 16 in the future if I need to. Should I look for a couple of 4gb sticks instead? Are those 2-3% of performance increase you mentioned really important?
If I have 2x sticks of 512mb RAM DDR400 and I would stick them to my new PC just for some reasons, would it make any difference adding that 1GB on top of 8GB?
Unless you have a specific function in mind for that memory (such as a RAM disk, or a RAM-hungry task like Wii U emulation), one additional gigabyte is very unlikely to make a noticeable difference in a system that already sports 8 GB of RAM.
Can you help me! I need a laptop for gaming and mostly for general stuff what do you recommend me , an Omen 15 , i7 8750H, 16GB ram , 144Hz , nvidia 4GB gtx 1050 Or Dell G3 , i7 8750H , 8GB ram , 60Hz , nvidia 4GB gtx 1050 Ti , 128 SSD ?
The Dell option with the GTX 1050 Ti should get slightly better performance in gaming. (The additional RAM of the Omen is not nearly as important as the fact that the Omen's GTX 1050 is the lesser GPU.)
I feel so cringe when people think ram has to do with gaming... Ram is something that runs in the background what apps you use hasn't been close. With enough ram this way your gaming don't slow down depend on what game files size take away your ram.
Would depend very strongly on the situation. I doubt there would be much different between those in the majority of situations. But some processes may favor speed (like gaming) and some may favor capacity (like 3D design work). That said, in general we'd recommend 4 sticks over 3 sticks so that memory channels are not being unevenly filled.

That depends! For most people I would say that 2-3% isn't that important. Now is a great time to upgrade to 16GB!
Logical Increments Thanks! I got a single stick of 8 and may be I'll upgrade to 16 when I get the chance.
Sounds like a plan!
im currently has a ddr3 ram with 4gb, can i remove the ram and buy a new ram like maybe ddr4 with 8gb. does removing my old ram come with cons?
No, you can not do that. DDR4 RAM is not compatible with motherboards that are made for DDR3 RAM.
Can I use your video for a class/training?
Yes! We would be delighted to have our video used for educational purposes. Thank you for asking.
@@logicalincrements Thank you very much, Is there a name or specific credits you would like me to show?
Can you help me! I need a laptop for gaming and mostly for general stuff what do you recommend me , an Omen 15 , i7 8750H, 16GB ram , 144Hz , nvidia 4GB gtx 1050
Or Dell G3 , i7 8750H , 8GB ram , 60Hz , nvidia 4GB gtx 1050 Ti , 128 SSD ?
The Dell option with the GTX 1050 Ti should get slightly better performance in gaming. (The additional RAM of the Omen is not nearly as important as the fact that the Omen's GTX 1050 is the lesser GPU.)
@@logicalincrements what about the 60Hz screen is it enough?
Relative to the graphics processors being considered, 60 Hz is definitely enough.
@@logicalincrements thank you for your reply , I just took the dell G3
I feel so cringe when people think ram has to do with gaming... Ram is something that runs in the background what apps you use hasn't been close. With enough ram this way your gaming don't slow down depend on what game files size take away your ram.
would you say (4 sticks of 8 gb ddr4 2400 mhz) be better than (3 sticks of 8 gb ddr4 2666mhz)?
Would depend very strongly on the situation. I doubt there would be much different between those in the majority of situations. But some processes may favor speed (like gaming) and some may favor capacity (like 3D design work).
That said, in general we'd recommend 4 sticks over 3 sticks so that memory channels are not being unevenly filled.
