This is where grown men cry. Although we will miss his immense talent and genius we all hope he finds what he is looking for fast. Been listening to him and NW for over 20 years. This is a black day in the the Army's history. The fucking corporate hyenas finally got to him. Thank you Marco for all the moments of ecstasy, genius and grace you gave us. Please, know that the folks who matter most (your family and close friends) love and appreciate you, as do the hundreds of thousands of true Nightwish Army fans. You will never leave us and stay in our hearts for ever.
And just when I was starting to think that 2021 would be better than 2020. Lets all hope that Nightwish rises from the ashes stronger than ever like they've done before.
P.S. Marko's father was an English teacher & he also introduced Marko and Marko's brother Zachary to many types of music. But most importantly, he used to sing them lullabies when they were little. He died due to alcoholism.
P.S.S. There's a mistake in the written lyrics: it's not "sing my song...", but "sing my son and I'll be with you".

"It's hard to light a candle, easy to curse the dark instead" are the lyrics I love most of "Last ride of the day" by Nightwish, so I won't curse the sadness of knowing this exceptional singer/bassist/human being will be part of NW no more, but I'll try to be positive and happy for his life being better and more satisfying.

This has been a hard day for all Nightwish fans. Thanks for this one. Marko's shoes will indeed be difficult to fill.
Marco's shoes will never be filled, only replaced, hopefully. I sense Marco is truly a genuine individual and one of a kind. As a NW fan for three years I'm going to miss him terribly, but wish him good health, contentment and love from our family in Arizona. Praying his new journey finds its way back to the music world and his vast fan base. Stay safe, Marco.
There's only one Marko, but Jarkko Ahola (Teräsbetoni, Northern Kings, Dreamtale) is the first name that came to my mind who could fill the role.

Markos voice is up there with legends like Dio and Bruce Dickinson. He could lead any rock or metal band. What a devestating loss for Nightwish. Impossible to replace. He wasn’t only their bass player and backup singer, but also their second song writer and an important sounding board for Tuomas when composing their music.
I'm waiting for Marko to churn out a sci-fi novel for us in the next twelve months. You never know. (I'm a sci-fi geek as well, and I've seen books by one of my favourite authors - Tim Powers - sat next to him during an interview.) In my heart, I think he will be back with Nightwish.
This is a great example of why Marko won The Masked Singer Finland. He can belt out a growling, raspy song, then he can also kill a mellower song like this. Amazing...

This is a Lovely song, Marko has such a great voice, I am gutted he is leaving the band but I understand that he needs to do it. Devastated that the first time I get to see them (if it goes ahead in May) he wont be there. Truly Saddened!

Marko is an amazing man. We all wish him the best in his future ventures. As long as he does what's best for him that's all that matters. He's had an amazing run and deserves a break. It's definitely not going to feel the same without him at the New York show but I'm still looking forward to being there.
He still had tongue-in-the cheek about Tommy Iommi (Black Sabbath guitarist since beginning of band)
It's better that Marko has enought strengt and sisu to make this solution of sabatical time with his loved ones. My deepest respect to him and hope he has time so find serenity and give will to make comeback!
It's better to read these headlines, than those we've read considering Gary Moore, Paul Gray, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston etc. And the always joking my favourite actor Robin Williams.

OURS just STARTED Jan 15th 2021
I read the post online before I went to sleep and didn't want to believe it. Then I woke up having a feeling of a bad dream to only see people reacting online, so I really feel shocked still. Just as this past year has been hard on all of us, one of the biggest losses in my life was the ticket I had last year being canceled to see nightwish and to now have this happen is heartbreaking. I only wish him and the rest of the band the best of luck and I have to just keep listening to all their music from the past over and over.
This song has special meaning to me now since my father passed away in early 2020. What Marko wrote about his father's voice echoing to infinity resonates hard with me.

Very sad to see this, but Marko's a smart and thoughtful 55 year old, not a teenager throwing tantrums, so you have to presume that he's thought it all through carefully and concluded that this is the best way forward for him. Not an easy move to make at all, and much respect to him for having the courage to do what he feels is right. I hope it all works out well, and I hope we hear new music from him in some form in the future, because he's an enormous talent and a unique voice (both literally and figuratively) and it would be a real loss if he totally quit. Hopefully a rest, a change of context and a new perspective will get him to a better place.
It wouldn't surprise me to see him collaborate with Floor independently at some point in the future. Nightwish members have always had side-projects and Floor and Marko are very fond of each other.
I'm saddened by the news of Marco's departure from music for the time being, I hope he finds his peace and motivation, but even if he doesn't he's already more than earned his spot among the legends. As for the song, it became an immediate favorite - musically, lyrically... it's genius.

I have great respect for his decision, although it makes me sad. I am a NW fan but also a Marko fan. Looks like I am going to miss him on both accounts. I hope he finds his mojo in the near future and enjoys whatever he will be doing.

It's truly sad,for me Marko was a stone,a nightwish stone.great vocalist.Tarja left,Anette was the weak link,Floor is now great but Marko WAS Always there with his great voice and presence...was my favourite...

I was actually listening to "How's the Heart", acoustic version, umptieth time obviously, a few hours after I read the news. I couldn't keep it dry between the emotions from the song and the news.
I really feel for Marco, and empathize with him too. I do hope he will recover, and find some way to still work with Nightwish, even if that is a year from now or more. He will be sorely missed, for sure.
And of course you now react with this song, and it happens all over again ....

OMG Damn , rly liked Marko, but understand and respect his decision. He is a very very intelligent human being and will very much miss his absence, his boots will be very hard to fill. I am very much an Alberta Nightwish army fan forever. I feel for the Nightwish members as well. Must be tuff, I know Floor really liked Marko. A few years ago I stumbled on nightwish by random luck. I fell in love with the band. I can’t imagine songs like Romanticide being done by another. A truly great musician and will be missed by the masses.

He has such a distinctive voice. It won't be easy to make friends with a new one, and the statement also states that they will play with a new bass player. But there was nothing about a bass player and singer. That means for me Troy will jump in wherever possible and other songs will probably be removed from the list for the time being.

Sometimes the bureaucracy and such does get to like-minded individuals. And it can be a process to re-tune our spirit, but I believe Marko will be just fine, from his words and the small look I’ve had at his mind and personality.

Marko will be hugely missed by both nightwish and the fans alike. His voice and stage presence will make him very difficult to replace. I hope that nightwish fans will be a bit nicer to his replacement than they were to Annette olzon. Get well marko hope we haven't seen the last of you but your health comes first

My mind has just about stopped whirling in frantic denial. I am hoping for all the best for Marko. As he has helped me through my times of depression, I join with the Nightwish family in wishing him all the best in getting through his own rough times. Not going to lie though. This is really hard.

2020 has been a year that caused many to examine their lives and some, on reflection, understood that life is more than the day to day grind we all endure. Kudos to Marko for taking that time and determining a better way for him and those he loves. Kitos for the wonderful music and I hope that he finds his creative niche that will suit him going forward. We have a wonderful catalogue of memories and music of the band as it was. That's the beauty of the YT world, rather than what it has become lately with the issues of 2020.

The reason for the blurry image is quite simple, It's a voice over of the original Finnish version "Isäni ääni" (Marko's vocals in both).
I won't go into THE big news, instead I'd like to wish everyone a happier 2021, and a great big Happy 55th Birthday to Marko.
Marko has carried Nightwish for a long time and even though it's a bad thing for the band, this kind of change is mostly for the better. Marko definitely has a lot to offer that might not have been possible as 'just' a band member so i look forward to see what happens. :)

As I'm a few years older than Marko I know exactly what he feels: Why the hell are we doing what we are doing and why does it feel like as an effort to keep pumping to have the keep that balloon inflated. What the hell is it good for? Why even bother waking up in the morning. This year, 2020, seems such a waste and the world isn't exactly a better place to be in, the amount of hate present in everyday life...
Switching off and do the people you truly like a favour is sensible thing to do for him and you can only respect that.

This was a single from Marko's solo record from 24 January, 2020. This is so relevant to what Marko has been going through and what drove his decision. There are great bassists out there, but are they also classically trained guitarists as well as able to sing his amazing vocal parts. Doubtful? If so they are already in a band.

Just to point out, although others may have, when the lyrics read "Sing My Song" Marko is actually singing "Sing, my son, and I'll be with you." I honestly think it was a mistake when producing the lyrics in English for the video, because in the original version (in Finnish?) he sings, "Sing , my son".

Marko's resignation announcement:
Dear people, I am leaving Nightwish and my public life. For some years now I have no longer been able to feel approved by this life. We have the big streaming companies that require a lot of work from 9am to 5pm from artists while they share the profits incorrectly. Even among others. We are the banana republic of the music industry. Big tour promoters are squeezing percentages even on our own merchandise while paying dividends in the Middle East. Evidently some theocracies can take the money from music, the same ones that if they saw us would have us beheaded or put in jail without appearing hypocritical. They are just a couple of examples.Last year it forced me to stay home and reflect and I felt very disappointed about these things and many more. I found that I need to feel validated in order to write, sing and play, I need to find new reasons and new inspirations. “My Walden”, so to speak. I also wrote in my book that I am a chronic depressed person. It is dangerous for me and for the people around me. I had bad thoughts a while ago but don't worry, I'm fine. I have two children, a wife, the rest of my family, friends, a dog and a lot of love and I don't think I'll be gone forever. Conspiracy is the everyday word, for those people who like them I mean my 55th birthday will be on January 14th and I've paid my price.Accusing even for a moment Tuomas is an insult both to him and to my free thought. This is a very sad thing for all of us. Have respect, please. Obviously we will soon know more, should someone propose something similar.
There are a couple of things already agreed that I will do this year, for the rest I ask kindly and with respect to the media, bands and artists not to ask me anything until next year. I need to reinvent myself. I hope I can tell you something in 2022, although this is not a promise. I am very sorry.

I'm happy Marko is doing what he needs to help himself, I appreciate the many many years of amazing music he has given us and i cannot state how grateful I am to have seen him live. On the other hand my selfish side is hurting like nothing else.

Marco is a thinker and most people who are thinkers have an introspective and at times depressive nature. Mid 50's touring during COVID times would not be appealing and I would imagine the band are beholden to a record label to do a world tour for the current album when maybe somewhere nagging in the back of his head would be - this is not sensible. At the same time he wouldn't want to stand in the way of the rest of the band and I sort of get this sense from his statement as well as the politics...
