Just a note, the winning toaster. I've owned two of them and I have to agree that when it's working, it's a fantastic toaster. Unfortunately the first one broke after a couple of months and I got a warranty replacement. The 2nd toaster lived just past the warranty and died as well. I tried to open it up to try to see what failed and these are built specifically to not be opened without being destructive. Just something to keep in mind. Upvote for visibility.

Probably the hardest "good" appliance to buy, I've had everything from "well there goes $45" to satisfactory, but never quite what I wanted, and I'm not dropping $250 for toast. Thank you ATK for another time/money saving review, you do the work so I don't have to. Might be the Dash, might be the Breville, must discuss with the exchecker .

I dunno if it's fair to criticise the Magimix one for toasting too much on the highest setting, like y'all point out there's more than just white bread out there, some stuff (like crumpets) take longer to brown, people toast from frozen etc. Seems a bit like complaining your oven gets too hot!
$250 though, why's it so hard to find a toaster that heats evenly without shelling out premium engineering prices? It's a box where the sides get hot, is that really so difficult to make?

As someone who often toasts high moisture beads I prefer a toaster that can overtoast white bread.
Usually type tests are pretty good but I feel like this time there were some weird inconsistencies. Like wouldn't it make more sense to toast for 2 minutes and see which gets the darkest because that would be the fastest?

I toast you ladies for an excellent video! Very well made and it inspires confidence in your judgement. That photograph of your intern really shows the goods. ATK does the work. I'll be returning to this video and article when it's time for a new toaster! Now I know what to look for. I didn't know what I was missing!
After reading the article, the Dash may be in my near future. Finally a toaster I don't have to struggle to get a bagel into. I wish I'd seen it a little more in the video, especially the flying toast, but to me that's a minor problem I believe I will be able to resolve to my satisfaction. I'm guessing it's a problem with lighter bread slices. I could place the toaster where the bread can fall out safely or place something above to prevent bread escape. It's definitely a flaw and major quirk that many people won't accept, but for me personally and the way I use the oven (rarely with thin square sliced sandwich bread) it's not enough to make me rule out an otherwise-excellent product that's an outstanding value. Perhaps I just need to identify which long cooking implement or object in the kitchen to lean against the toaster to stop the travel of any "high fliers".

First, great video, I’m a big fan of Lisa, what a treasure of a lady. Second, I think the review of the Magimix is unfair, you say it burns bread on its strong setting, well it’s a flimsy white bread, of course it’s going to burn it. Magimix is French and have you ever tried to toast a frozen baguette? Or what you call artisanal bread (which is just normal bread here), we usually freeze baguettes and other types of bread so they retain moisture. We need really strong toasters to unfreeze them then give them a light brown colour. I would love to see another test that is made for the real use of the Magimix which is a superior (yet expensive) toaster.

I’m not talking about some artesian wide bread but store bought wheat that is slightly wider than Wonder Bread white. The Dash is not wide enough for anything but the smallest bread slices when toasting in tandem. Y'know what? I want the highest setting to burn white sliced bread pretty thoroughly. Because how else are you going to get a decent browning on something that doesn't toast so readily?

I’ve been looking for a really good waffle maker for a long time, preferably one that makes four at a time. From the reviews I’ve seen it’s really difficult to choose, would love to see you review some for us.

We recently bought a $380 Bteville Toaster Oven that can do everything.
It's big, but it's attractive, and nothing performs better.
It even air fries and dehydrates, and can roast a 14lb turkey.

But a toaster could pay for itself in energy efficiency. In a toaster oven; you're heating up a whole oven.

I was just in the UK and was blown away by how fast the toaster and kettles were on 220 volts. If I was to build a new house I'd put in a designated 220 outlet just for the kettle and toaster.

The # setting on the toaster is supposed to reflect minutes of toasting. The "done-ness" is adjusted to individual taste.

Try this (real world): family of 6, all eating approximately same and overlapping times, each wanting 2 slices of whatever, widely varying color gradations of toasted bread/bagel/Eggo/muffin/etc, widely varying order of service. What toaster do you recommend?

I have the Breville "A Bit More," toaster, which I purchased about a year ago. I purchased it because I like to buy "rounds," of crusty French bread, rather than the long loaves, which produces slices that are smaller.
The "Bit More" does have longer slots, to accommodate the SIZE of a slice of round bread. HOWEVER, it's designed for four STANDARD slices. The middle of the slots do not have wire toaster capability, so a slice comes out browned on either end, but un-toasted in the middle. I have to cut the slices of bread in half, and toast them on separate ends of the slots. I prefer to toast them whole.
For that reason, I regret the purchase ... although, I respect the Breville line.
Should you rate toaster, again, you might want to check to confirm how fully the browning surface in the slots.

I have spent WAY more on toasters than any person should, trying to find that perfect one. There is one test that they did not perform which in my eyes is one of the most important tests needed.
They tested all the toasters very well and came up with their winner and their budget winner but what about the 1st slice(s) of the morning in a cold toaster. Currently, we own a 4-slice Oyster toaster that cost me $85 2 yrs ago and from the begining, we've had to run the 1st cycle without bread to warm up the toaster because if we didn't, the result would be an extremely under-toasted piece of toast and we have to set the toaster to a lower setting to get that piece toasted.
So, return to this test and let us know what the 1st one of the day looked like from at least the two winners.

I think the most frustrating part of the toasters I've owned is that the first toast to come out is NEVER the measure for how the toast will come out right after that. I never remember to preheat my toaster. I always burn the second batch. :)
