Syriana is an incredibly underrated movie. Yes, it's complex and a little slow at times, but it is extremely riveting and sometimes scary. The events and issues explored in this movie are still happening today because people are as ignorant now as they have been the last 40+ years. I had to watch it a few times to pick up on how the stories connect with each other. It is like solving a puzzle and when you figure it out, the movie is much clearer. It isn't a masterpiece like Traffic, but it is a really great movie.
The word genius is now just over used. Sure they’re talented, good at their job, well trained, but not everyone who does well at their jobs is a genius. Albert Einstein used to be the epitome of genius and now anyone who pulls of anything considerable decent is.
Well, except that it failed to mention US shale oil which changed everything in the movie’s timeline. It was antiquated when it was released. But it plays to partisian political talking points so that is nice
RIP Christopher Plummer (December 13, 1929 - February 5, 2021), aged 91 And RIP William Hurt (March 20, 1950 - March 13, 2022), aged 71 You both will be remembered as legends.
Just found this dvd in my room. Think I'll give it a watching. Love coming back and watching the trailers of these old films before rewatching them... Cheers everyone have a nice day...
Not at all. The whole premise is "the oil is running out and the middle east has 90% of what's left" and that's ridiculous. The US imports on average 7.3 million barrels a day (figures from around 2017, subject to change). The US has roughly 250 billion barrels worth of proven recoverable oil. Which means we could not import another drop for 93 years without reducing oil consumption. And that's also assuming no new oil field discoveries, no reduction in consumption, advances in technology in collecting and using oil, etc. All of which will happen. Besides which, Venezuela has the most oil in the world, not the middle east.
@@ntl9974 Some parts are very accurate. Clooney plays Baer but iirc they changed the character's name. Other parts are ofc loosely based because you know how hollywood does things. They need to spice it up. Baer was a CIA operative who worked all over the mid east. He was there to get rid of Sadam. There was an opportunity to kill him in 95 iirc but the White House decided not to make a move. And Baer was investigated later by the FBI for conspiring to assassinate Sadam. Which is odd considering they sent him over there to get rid of him.
Something I don’t understand about George Clooney’s character is this: Why, at the end of the movie, did he try to warn the oldest son of that kingdon that he was the target of the CIA assasination plan, when earlier he himself willingly went to Beirut on a mission from his bosses at the CIA to have that same guy assasinated?
I'm syrian but what does Syria have with the film in order to name the film Syriana ?? I'm wondering now ,If the film subject revolves around Iraq war and Saudia arabia , did they see the future 🤔🤔🤨

I literally watched the movie 5 times over a six month period and still confused as to some of the plot lines. I even stopped the movie at certain points and took notes. Is there an extended or directors cut out there that has additional scenes which explain more of the story. Clooney won an academy award for the film but I am willing to bet everyone that voted for him did not fully comprehend the film either.
part of the problem is that there are important lines one can simply NOT hear.....but i read on wiki that it may have been a deliberate thing to leave the audience confused to emulate the confusion that georges character experienced. Another puzzle for me was, was matt damons character meant to show NO emotion after the death of his son? who would be THAT reserved??

It's a shame this didn't get nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars
It depicts the reality of american imperialism, why would they nominate it? the Oscars are almost entirely political and ideological
But George Clooney did win for his acting 😉👍🎬🏆

you’re telling me I’m legit named after a movie about oil.

This film left a lot unanswered, especially with the Bob Barnes story arc and the Bennet Holiday Jr. and Sr. Story Arc.

So … Clooney is the first billed and listed actor but won the best supporting Oscar and wasn’t nominated for best lead? Why?
Because it’s an ensemble. There really wasn’t any leading stars in this movie. It was about everyone in one movie.
