This is a great age to keep celebrations simple. If the family is relaxed and happy, then the child will be happy. You will have sooooo many years of planning all kids of events as your kids get older. Teaching them that a simple celebration with loved ones can be the best time is sooo valuable.

What helps me with laundry is not doing it perfectly. I wash everything in cold, all together for my family of 4. The second I have a full load I run it. I would rather be doing laundry “wrong” than getting behind cause that would stress me out lol

When I was a kid IF we even got to have a birthday party, it was a home party with maybe 3 friends.
For my 4 kids(all 2 yrs apart) we had a bigger 1st birthday party for each of them. The whole extended family would come. We used our church fellowship hall. After that we do a party at home with just some immediate family. I make whatever flavor cake the birthday kid wants. They also get to choose the meal and appetizers we make. It's always a good time!

Random thought after hearing about the birthday party ideas- I LIVED for roller skating parties as a kid, I’m 41. I convinced my daughter who is now 21 to have a party at the roller skating rink when she turned 13 and she was VERY resistant. Dumbest idea ever. She ended up having a freaking blast. I was definitely the cool mom that night.. I can still skate backwards. 😂

When I was younger (probably grade school if I had to pinpoint), our rule for birthday parties was that on “odd” birthday years (5,7,9) we had birthday parties with our extended family/cousins, and “even” years we had birthday parties where we could invite friends! Usually like 5 or so. It kept things fun and manageable 😊

I'm on the news from time to time because of my job. Generally it's recommended to wear jewel toned, solid colors and no green. Like sapphire blue or turquoise is usually good. Pink can be good, if it's saturated enough. No green because if they use "green screen" your body will vanish! lol

Here’s the thing Jess, I love that you’re constantly working on yourself and trying to become a better person….as we all should be doing. But when something like the house being messy or the constant laundry that you can’t get caught up with is affecting you so much, possibly even chipping away at your mental health, then give yourself permission to pay to have it taken care of and don’t feel guilty about it. You can afford to have a cleaning service as little or as often as you’d like. You would come home to a spotless house and it would give you more family time. Less stress. And it’s not something you’ll always need to do. As your girls get older the whole family can help with chores and get things done in no time. But right now, in this very busy time with young children, it could really give you peace. 💗 Not to mention you could probably write it off because your house is part of your job😂🙌🏼

So funny story, I used to work on the morning news and I found your channel way back when, to help me learn how to do my makeup to be on camera! lol
Back then I always wore a full coverage foundation and I did a little extra blush, bronzer, etc but not as much as I would for stage. The lights as you probably noticed are really bright and those cameras see everything lol. Solid jewel tones are usually best, especially if you are sitting at their news desk or at the green screen(no green!) lol but if you’re on a more laid back set(like you were) then a lot more outfits ‘work’. I always wore solid dresses in red, blue, black, pink, and purple, but that’s because I was always at the green screen or in front of a very busy news set lol.
It’s also funny because I always thought a news station should do a story about you guys, I’m glad they did!!

But we did the same thing where their first two birthdays were our friends.. but this year my son turns 3 and our plan is immediate family. And then as many friends as you are old. We have a small house and my plan is to make birthdays simple and sweet. This year I’m starting a tradition that my parents did which is a “bottom of the bed gift” it was always small and simple but so sweet ❤

For birthday parties, my parties growing up were a lot like yours. But my twin daughters didn't grow up around either of our families because we moved across the country before they were born. Because of that we had planned parties when we would invite friends and their kids when my girls were young and then their own friends as they've gotten older. They weren't lavish but they were at places like a local YMCA or a barn with pony rides. It's pretty normal here because I live in an area where most people aren't from here, we don't have families around, so the birthday parties tend to be more structured.

We would pick our own special meal or choose a restaurant and have cake as a family. Also weird comment but we LOVE that zucchini "pizza" recipe but I had such a hard time with zucchini liquid making the pastry soggy. We now pre-cook the pastry for 10 min and then put toppings on. That has helped so much! We also add onion, mushroom, etc sometimes. So good. And your honey idea is *chefs kiss! Last thing...I got the 4th wing books from your recommendation. IN LOVE! We use the Inglesina Quid Baby Stroller for travel and love it. Folds down and fits in the overhead bin on an airplane, lightweight and holds up to 50lbs. We hook the OXO stroller hooks on the handles to carry extra stuff if needed.

In your next Coffee Chat or vlog, can you pls talk in more detail about the daily routine for your kids? Wake up time, nap time, bedtime, etc? As a new mom, I’m trying to get my daughter into a routine, and am curious about how you and Tyler structure your girls’ days.
Also hope you can find the news clip to share with us to watch! Anxious to see!
    Thank you!!

If you like aerie loungewear and stuff you will LOVE their cotton pjs!! the ones with the vertical stripes. they are SO comfortable and great if you're a hot sleeper. i've worn and washed them a million times and they still look nice. just make sure it's the 100% cotton ones, the other ones aren't as comfy!

You’d go crazy in my house right now. We are gutting the bathroom and there is a new tub, a toilet and faucets in the living room. Boxes of bathroom stuff in the bedroom, towels and mirrors in the spare bedroom… and plenty of daily use stuff (toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair brushes etc.) in the powder room as we need to use them. We should’ve been finished by now but twice the vanity arrived defective and had to be returned. The third replacement is finally coming on Saturday. Hopefully by the end of next week everything will be back where it belongs. So yeah, I understand the difficulty to relax when the house is messy!

I've always had/done big parties for birthdays. I had them every year as a kid, and I'm now 51. Our kids are aged 16 to 33, and always had big parties for them when they were growing up, long before TikTok and social media was invented. The only difference I see is both my kids and myself while growing up had a bunch of huge (like 15-20 kids) sleepovers for birthday parties, and in recent years, less parents feel comfortable with slumber parties. Those were definitely the most fun parties though.

We didn’t do bday parties when I was a kid, we’d have family over for supper and cake. Now with my daughter we don’t do big big parties. We’ve done a party at her gymnastics studio, at our church gym (free and they own a bounce house to use) and then last year we did a joint party at a pool for her and her cousin. The pool has been my favorite bc it cost half of what the trampoline parks and other places charge, we didn’t need hardly any decorations, didn’t have to go all out on food and the kids LOVED it.

I have to set a timer for laundry or I will forget too! At least if it’s in the dryer, I can do a refresh for 20 minutes and put it away even if it’s the next day 😊I’m in the exact same place with 2 Young kids and can’t keep up with the house. Mess gives me anxiety. I’m still learning to let it go too ❤

Travel Stroller recommendation! We have (and LOVE) the Ergobaby Metro+. It folds down and up in seconds, it fits in overhead bins of airplanes, has an adjustable footrest, fully reclines back, has a substantial shade, AND has an adjustable handle. Truly can’t recommend it enough!

For the laundry - We don't have one of those fancy smart machines, but we put a smart outlet on the washer, so when the washer stops (stops drawing power) it sends a text. Helps me not forget I'm doing laundry. :)

I’m in my early 20s but the birthday parties you describes are exactly what I had in the 90s/00s. Frankly I think it’s enough, I have very pleasant memories of those parties even thought they were nothing fancy- a kids not gonna remember all the fancy details that stresses you out planning it. Let a kid pick out what color balloons they want at party city and what kind of cake they want and invite their friends and they’ll have a blast I’m sure. 😊

My mom always hosted sleepovers for my birthday and she would make up these really fun games and split us up into teams. The most memorable game she had my friends and I play was a toilet paper fashion show. We would wrap one girl in each team with toilet paper and vote on the best creation. Sooo creative

I was born in the late 60’s, started having birthday parties with friends in the early 70’s. My birthday is around Christmas, so my mom had Christmas decoration decorating parties. Really simple. She bought styrofoam shapes that you could decorate with ribbons, pretty pushpins, glitter, paint. Had games, cake too. It was an easy, creative way to keep a bunch of elementary-school girls entertained for a few hours. 😊

I totally understand the letting go of the untidy stuff. I have come to the conclusion like laundry it is never ending and someday I’ll have a clean house, but my kiddos will be grown and out of house and will want that mess again! I miss toys being all over my house. So someday you’ll want that mess back!

I’m about the same age as you, and my birthday parties sound similar to what yours were. I would have a handful of friends over and it would be themed with games and things. There was one year that I had a pool party at the community pool by my grandparents’ house, and when I was 12 I had a party at Clay and latte. That was the last year that I had a big party as a kid. So far we have done roughly the same for our kids, who are six and four, but I think our six-year-old might want to do a trampoline park party for her next birthday.
I recently finished reading the violin conspiracy and loved it! Highly recommend!

For birthdays, we do parties here and there. I did a small get together for my son’s 9th. We let him invite a few friends that he likes playing with and that’s all I did. They played video games and other boy stuff. He had so much fun and we were home. I hate planning parties because it’s becomes less about your kid and more about pleasing the people who you invite. It became very overwhelming for me. We started this thing to take them somewhere every other birthday. We’ve taken my son to Disney for his 8th birthday for the weekend. He got to pick a park and we had a blast. My daughter turned 5 in Nov and we did the same. It’s memories that that will always have!

One of the cutest and easiest cakes I ever made was a cookie monster cake for my son’s first birthday. I went on Pinterest, and it was so easy to re-create, which isn’t usually the case with Pinterest cakes. 😂 You use a grass tip with blue frosting for Cookie Monster’s hair and you don’t have to be precise with it, which is great, and then you put a chocolate chip cookie by his mouth and it’s adorable.

You mentioning how much fun your small scale parties were when you were a kid is the biggest example of why the size and cost of the party is entirely irrelevant to the child.
I had most of my bday parties with a handful of friends at home, sometimes a sleepover. I had a freaking blast! As I got older my parents would take me and my friends somewhere. I don’t feel I missed out on anything by not having the huge lavish parties we see nowadays.
By all means spoil your kids, but sometimes it feels like in *some* cases (NOT all) the massive party is more for appearances than for the kids.

I bought the “Mamazing Lightweight Baby Stroller” off of Amazon a couple of months ago when I was also in the market for a lightweight travel stroller and I LOVE IT! It’s not a well-known brand, but after returning 3 other brand name ones, I knew this one was it! Has nice features regular umbrella ones don’t have and even comes with a carrier bag for airplanes, fits in the top cabin as well.
Also, my husband likes to “go big” for every birthday and I’m here only trying to celebrate milestone birthdays (e.g. 1, 5, 10, 15, 18) for our kiddos. It’s interesting every year because I’m pregnant with our 5th. 😅

Pro Kid Party Planning TIp - use a local park. The cleaning is SO much less. You can rent out an area or just go and get there before anyone else. At one point, we lived in Cincinnati. I would get all hte prep ready and then go to the free waterpark for kids a couple of hours before we started. I would stake out a table and read in peace until about time to start. Then we would have snacks, kids could play, grownups could chill or play, cleanup was easy and it was awesome. Those are still the parties my now adult kids talk about.
