The best place to make love is the best place to give birth-Michael Odent. Which I assume for most people is not a hospital.

I love sex but have been afraid of childbirth (I'm in my first trimester). Literally, hearing that sex and childbirth have so much in common has lifted such a weight from my shoulders!! I'm seriously so relieved I'm crying right now (lol)...Thank God, we don't have to listen the fear-mongering!

L.A. Jameson (9 months pregnant) felt so guilty for liking sex/orgasm or even wanting to have sex because I felt like I was going to hurt my baby or like my baby was going to come out a perv or something....wish women could talk about this.

I'm so glad it resonated for you. The body is smart (and efficient), I wish we learned to trust that more than all the things that could go wrong. Well wishes to you - kate

You were really brave to be able to do this in front of an audience, But you made a lot of good points that I agree with. This speech resonated with me.

In Europe this is the norm. You don't have a C-section unless there is a risk for the baby OR the mother, fathers are present, I didn't know what an ''epidural'' is, really. I enjoyed the contractions because I was feeling in control and my husband was massaging my lower back. With the second baby it was even better and I had X-mas carrols on the radio in the hospital! Unfortunately, now I see the opposite tendency in Bulgaria - doctors scare young mothers, schedule C-sections for convenience and because the procedure is paid, and we are withnessing a massive increase in operations in order to give birth. So, it is really a matter of policy. The USA seem soo far behind in this. I am especially outraged at the automatic practice of circumcising male babies immediately after birth. Why do people think that they know better than nature?

so good I cried. my labour was assisted by great nurses and my mother, but it should've been with midwives in water. I wouldn't call my birth traumatic but I didn't need the ob or hospital and maybe it would have impacted my post-partum depression and anxiety

This is a lovely piece and quite succinct! I have heard other 'birth' pieces that are wonderful, this takes the audience to a whole other level. After 28 years in the field of birth I congratulate you Kate for a stellar presentation.

How is it that mortality rates have TRIPLED over time instead of improving with technology and research 🤔

These are such big problems in the birth world. If you're expecting, Evidence Based Birth (the website and podcast) is also an incredible resource to help inform yourself about the process of pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. As a scientist and a pregnant person, it's so helpful to have people like Kate and the EBB team modeling how we can understand birth and be less afraid of it.
