  • Want to reach the next level in Splatoon? Game awareness is key to have a good decision making and understanding of the game. In the following guide I will touch upon various awareness concepts to enhance your gameplay!
    Already my 5th bigger guide to improve in the game. With that I mostly covered everything you need to know to make it far in the scene. From now on if I decide to make guides they will be shorter and more detailed, only dealing with specific topics instead of everything what can be said. I got a special announcement for the next 2 weeks and the next real video should be another "the art of", but I'm not settled on it yet. Have a good one!
    Wadsm out.

    One tip a lot of people tend to forget (and I even sometimes forget this myself) is to try and position yourself safely if you notice a teammate super-jumping to you. When a teammate is jumping to you, you will see this little arrow with their name pointing to you. Try to stay safe until they land, and protect their landing spot. This ultimate teamwork right here, I do this to show I care about my teammates.

    • @robertej09
      @robertej09 5 років тому +72

      Omg yes pls. And if you're a jumper you need to jump to somebody that's not at the boundary between your ink and enemy ink, because it'll probably get you splatted. There are times when I'm trying to 2v1 or even stalemating and having to protect a jump really messes up the situation.

      @catguy4996 5 років тому +41

      @@robertej09 Well there is an exception. If you have splashdown, then you should deliberately jump to a bad position. So you can say to the opponents "surprise mother fuckers" and then squidbag them when they die from your splashdown.
      Actually maybe don't squidbag...

      @@musicalmather1160 Yes, one major problem. It has the possibility to get you banned for about 2 weeks. Now luckily not everyone who you squidbag is going to be whiney and report you, but there will be a few who do, especially if you taunt them in a ranked battle.

      @@musicalmather1160 well it's for that too. But apparently nintendo has zero tolerance to unsportsmanlike behaviour, which is where squidbagging falls

      @@musicalmather1160 Well imagine if say you're playing a tournament game with someone face to face, and when you lose the tournament, your opponent says "HAHAHA, BITCH! YOU SUCK! IN YOUR FACE!" Squidbagging in Splatoon 2 is like that, really. It's understandable why people don't like it.
      Good sportsmanship means getting along with everyone you're playing the game with, even people on the opposite team.

    Awesome Splatoon tips. I'll more than likely try to incorporate all of these while playing.
    But just to add. If for whatever reason you feel like if you're in a rut and can't seem to improve your awareness skills or Splatoon is starting to feel like a grind.... Try playing other games that also require situational awareness. Maybe like RTS Games, FPS Games and even some Fighter and Simulator games. I can't tell you how many I jump back into Splatoon after a while and somehow feel like I gained Ultra Instinct out of now where. Plus other games can help you with what your lacking with.
    For example: Not looking at the map? Try an Real Time Strategy (RTS) or Strategy game. One game I use is "They Are Billions." You don't necessarily need to play They Are Billions if you don't like the game or that type of game. There are many other RTS games and other games in general that can help with map management. In my case, when playing They Are Billions, I constantly check the map to see what areas I constantly need scouted. Also can see where the all the zombies are located and where my biggest threat may come from. I rarely do anything without checking the map first. This is good because you start building that map checking mentality and can incorporate it into Splatoon. May not work for you but it works for me. Just make sure to watch where you're going... because for whatever reason... when i check the map while swimming to where i want to go... i somehow run head first into rollers, bombs, ink walls, specials, and even enemy players.
    Basically, you can build habits from other games if you don't see yourself building in Splatoon and can incorporate them in later. Need to be a better sniper but can't get over missing all the time? Fast paced FPS. Need to help with keeping track of every player? Try a strategy game. Feel like your fingers are sluggish and can't keep up? Fighting game or button mashing game. Need help with your field of view and seeing people from the corner of you eye? Try a fast paced game. (try open hexagon it's free) Wanna learn how to outsmart people and think outside of the box while under pressure? Try fast paced puzzle game. And by puzzle im not talking about those phone app games that require you to finish a puzzle in under 30 sec. No, i'm talking about stuff like Hotline Miami
    Although, mixing things up from time to time can bring a new breath of fresh air, It's best to work on the game you really want to improve on. Especially if you want to polish your splatting and inking skills. Just be sure to work on what you need the most help with. Even if it means you need to look at it from an other angle, standpoint, or even from other game's point of view. Just make sure to have fun when playing, Yeah?

    thank you Wadsm! Great guide! (and great music too~!) I like how you pointed out that playing every weapon for experience is hard, and wanted to expand on that. I consider myself a flex between support and anchor, but one fateful day I was craving burst bomb combos and played Splattershot after dropping 30 QR chunks to get pure QR shoes. Not only do I enjoy the weapon now (although I'll usually satisfy my burst bomb cravings with CJS these days), but I learned to think like an aggressive player, and after watching this video, I've realized how little I've exploited that. Getting inside players' heads seems so difficult when you have so much more like execution, decision making, and positioning to worry about, but down here in S+ where I am I see a lot of the same things over and over again by aspiring Kensa Dualies tryhards, and that gives me hope.
    Got some questions, though:
    You didn't mention in Man Advantage Awareness anything about trades. Does man advantage play into that, and how?
    How far is too far to push in? At what point do pushers begin to overextend, and how can that be avoided/exploited?
    To connect ink management and comp awareness, watching for specific subs like the Fizzy Bomb on the KSM can provide information on opponent's ink tanks. Would that be good to take into account, to attack opponents when they're low on ink or recovering ink, or is it a waste of time?
    What should I do if my team has two backliners and I'm one of them? Should I change my playstyle or not?
    but finally WHY were you wearing 2 mains of special saver at the world cup?
    Thanks again, amazing video! :D

    • @Wadsm
      @Wadsm  5 років тому

      First of all i was wondering the same thing and can't remember ever picking two mains of special saver, might have been a missclick in the WC but tbh I don't know x)
      Trades depend on the situation if they are benefital or not. In general i would say trades are useful when your team has control, the trading player can easily jump back to his team while the other has to swim from spawn again since their team doesn't hold much control yet.
      As long as you can secure trading and have teammates to jump back to you as a frontline should take as much space as possible, even if that mean you get to your enemies spawn. It's a matter of judging whether you can get something out of pushing further or not.
      Psuhing an opponent who just used a sub is of course an option considering he has no ink left for another bomb in a 1v1 giving you more tools to clutch the fight.
      In solo queue it's tricky what you should do when your team requires you to play different. It's unlucky when you find yourself in such a situation but i would still just play your game even if it means your team has to setp back. It's better to train what you need to do with your weapon in solo queue instaed of forcing yourself to play a role your weapon is not designed for.

      I finally figured it out, when you take damage, you notice black splashing starting to appear on the corners of screen ( your field of vision), and the more damage you take, the deeper the black splashing gets and the narrower your field of vision becomes, once you swim in your ink to recover, that dark areas clear gradually and you restore your field of vision. Once all black ink disappears from all corners, it means you restored your full health and you are ready to go back to fight.
      Very simple, but the game never explained these basic stuff in tutorials.

    As a perfectionnist player I know I will take a lot of time to master everything you mentioned! Haha.
    Which awareness should we begin to train ? I don't think there is one more important than another, but maybe some are easier to master in the first place?

    Remember to keep track of where your teammates are so you know if it’s worth it to deal as much damage as you can and get splatted, and then super jump back into the fight, if you should super jump away or if you’ll be forced to run to avoid losing significant ground with a super jump. It can mean the difference if you can make it trivial for a teammate to splat someone close to getting a super and thus preventing a game winning push.

    As an offensive player who rushes in a lot mindlessly, I’ve learned some things that would be a lot better than well, rushing in mindlessly.
    • staying with defensive Teamates (mini guns, splat brella, etc.) with boost the chance of you surviving. An offensive player working with a defensive player gives attack and defense all at once
    • playing weapon roles correctly helps. Me being a former sniper main, I used to just run in without knowing the actual role snipers played (killing from a distance) and got splatted a lot.
    • figuring out what weapon works best for you is always helps. I’m a slosher main now, and the two-hit-lots-of-inking is exactly how I want my gameplay. So find a weapon class that works with you!
    These are just some tips I thought :/

    There are two things that prevent me from getting to X rank
    1. My aim. I tend to miss several kills a game due to my aim not being good enough.
    2. My awareness. I'm not that aware of specials and map things, and team awareness is my weakest point. Sometimes I'll lose a game when I did better than anyone else, but because I wasn't helping my teammates we couldn't push the objective or stop it properly.

    I have a tip no one tends to use, but if you see an enemy super jumping, check the special status of the enemy. If you see a splashdown charged, do not super jump camp. Easy way to do this is to try to capture the position of the other enemies

    One more thing about special awareness I don't think you mentioned is that the players' hair starts flaming when they have their special. You can use it in conjunction with the team comp. Or in a 1v1 to know when they get their special.
    Weapon set knowledge is also important of course, since just knowing that your enemies have their special isn't too useful if you don't know what it is.
    Furthermore, knowing what sub weapons your enemies have is important. You can learn to be cautious of sneaky succ bombs by your drop, for example. You can use this along with the enemies abilities to know whether the sub weapon they just used will have drained their ink tank (ie do they have ink saver sub?)

    • @Wadsm
      @Wadsm  5 років тому

      Yes I could have mentioned that flaming hair shows that a special is ready. I kind of held that for common knowledge, but I should keep in mind that each guide is aimed at beginners anyway.
      Also you're right that it's crucial to know what weapon has what set, once again it's nornmal for me to know them but not everyone does when he picks up the game.

    Wadsm your guides are so In depth when your talking about said subject. So I was wondering if you could make guides on how to handle or outplay a certain weapon or class kind of like how thatSrb2Dude did with the clash blaster.

    Good video for beginners. Actually, even as a decent player myself, I need to be a little more aware of ink quantities. You could also make a point about certain weapons having weak spots in their frame data (e.g. after a charger shoots, there MUST be a minimum of X frames before they can shoot again. As a front liner you can sometimes take advantage of small bits of info like this).
