Also it was very hard to get you had to crush up 1000 of those snails to get 1 gram of the the color purple that's why it was so expensive and that's why NO countries have purple in their flags.

Phoenix was son of King Agenor of Tyre.Phoenix (Ancient Greek: Φοῖνιξ , gen.: Φοίνικος means "sun-red" crimson ) is the eponym of Phoenicia .
Together with his brother Cadmos were tasked to find their abducted sister , Europa.
Cadmos brought the idea of the letter, (one symbol for one sound), in Greece and thus the alphabet was created.

Could be wrong but I saw a documentary a few years ago that said that baby sacrifice was Roman propaganda and archaeology shows it was a collection of babies who naturally died in a special grave yard that gave rise to this story. I have only seen it in one sources so keen to get more researched thoughts on it.
    Loving the videos.

Jeremy it could also be archaeologists over time. As you say.. these special graveyards where children have been found were ex voto sites... so next to jars of small children's bones were plaques that asked for another child etc.... most of these skeletons under analysis showed the children died naturally (50% chance a child would survive under age 2). But let's face it - more exciting to say they were primitive (and makes us feel better apparently)

The theory that the Phoenicians had reached the Americas was NOT cast aside! It is still believed by some historians, and has not been discredited. It only lacks additional archaeological evidence, but there are lots of reasons to believe it happened. There are, for example, Greek accounts describing their voyage west of the Atlantic to previously unchartered "fertile soil."

There were Gaulic migrants in Anatolia during the Byzantine Empire’s golden age. There were also viking mercenaries in Greece (they even carved one if the Piraeus port’s lions statues with runes). In Central Asia there was a kingdom of Grecoindians called Bactria and apparently they made contact with the Chinese (they fought over horses). There was even a sect of Greek Buddhism or Hinduism (can’t remember which) in Southeast Asia.
Templars of the Knight order under the Pope’s instructions were believed to have visited North America to hide the Holy Grail in an island near Canada. The vikings actually clashed with the native Americans in Vinland. The Japanese once travelled in Rome and were converted to Christianity. There was an ancient Greek vase in the middle of a dessert in South America (Argentina? I think). The African tribes of west Africa were believed to have made contact with European and Arab merchants far before the Portuguese or the Polos even mapped Africa. Also not to forget the African pirate invasions in India. I wonder if Caribbean pirates ever reached below Brazil.
I keep forgetting about something really interesting regarding the Asians and native Americans.

While the Phoenicians are often credited with the development of the alphabet, the evidence suggests that the alphabet itself evolved from Egyptian hieratics which itself was an evolution of the more complicated hieroglyphics. There are early signs of alphabetic writing which seem to be evolve from southern Canaan and make their way north to Phoenicia, where it was refined into the Phoenician alphabet.

The Phoenicians were infact Tamil people. They emigrated from India during or after the collapse of Indus Valley Civilization. The name Phoenicians was derived from the Tamil word PAN AND PANI Which means to PRODUCE. They were experts in trading and and great Navigators. They called themselves as PANIARS, or PANNIARS. The Greeks called them Phoenicians. RIG VEDA mentions a class of People called PANIS. WHO WERE INDIGENOUS TAMILS. They were also liked by Rigvedic Brahmins because they ( Panis) paid the Brahmins lot of tributes for their servises. In Tamil language Money/ Currency is called PANAM even to this day. Panam ie paying something in tarde is derivmed from PAN or PANI that is to Produce.

this is why ancient Romans would wear purple. priests still wear purple today. Roman nobility, purple, state/religion, phonetic alphabet, maritime trade, the phoenecians of yesterday have evolved into the royals of today, the UK/Vatican, the queen of England wears purple and so does all her priests. The UK judicial system is maritime law, the phonecians wrote the alphabet and ruled the Mediterranean sea for 1500 years, the history books say that Hannibal was defeated by the Romans who the destroyed Carthage and conquered the phoenecians. How does the new kid on the block rome defeat a civilisation that ruled the known world for 1500 years?

The Phoenicians were not a single political entity. Much like the Greeks, they were divided among many city states and petty kingdoms despite their shared culture and religion. Various Phoenician city states would set up trade posts for their ships along the coast of North Africa, Sicily, and eventually Spain. Many of these trade posts developed into cities in their own right (like Carthage, Utica, Lepis, Gadir, Iol, and so on).
Carthage was located in a fantastic natural harbor with nearby fertile land and was centrally located meaning they could trade in Spain for iron, copper, lead, gold, and silver trade with the Phoenician homelands, Greece, Italy (with the Romans, Etruscans, Umbrians, and so on), Egypt, and other places.
Carthage was primarily trade focused. Every time they expanded, it was to try to reach new markets. Rome expanded to assimilate and make the conquered Romans or at least subject to Rome. Carthage also depended on hiring mercenaries from the civilians they traded with while Rome built standing armies of trained soldiers.
And they fought three wars with the first two being closely contested (with Hannibal almost ending Rome a few times in the Second Punic War) and the Third Punic War was more of genocide than a war.

Some emphasis on the Phoenician' alphabet (around 6:25) - while it is indeed a mother of many European languages (but not ALL), it was not invented by the Phoenicians themselves, but evolved from the proto-Canaanite script, known as the North Semitic alphabet (same as Hebrew, language of the original old testament, evolving from proto-Canaanite script).
One more note about the Phoenicians' demise; albeit a great maritime nation, but not a military power, they were defeated and controlled by many empires, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Persians and Finally the Macedonian-Greeks (Alexander at al). With Cartago it was a different story, as Cartago had the great Military leaders (Hannibal the great of course the most known).

Most animal sacrifices involved eating the meat afterward. It was usually cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, and so on that were sacrificed. Religious festivals were often the only time many people actually ate meat since it was otherwise so expensive.
In ancient cultures, the animal would be slaughtered in a ritualistic manner (such as facing an alter or being dabbed with oil) and the slaughter would be dedicated to a god. Certain organs or body parts might be burnt as an offering to a god.
Keep in mind that both Kosher and Halal slaughter both have their origins in ancient animal sacrifice.
As far as the human sacrifices, yes, the Canaanites (the religion practiced by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and others) did occasionally practice human sacrifice; specifically the burning of babies. However, it was reserved only for emergencies and it was done by the most powerful in society. The idea was that it was to show how much you needed the help of a deity that you were willing to sacrifice your own child. It wasn't a regular practice.
