Meetings are on odd-numbered months except November. July date still TBD. Date will be posted on the suttercreekragtime web site and the Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival group on Facebook. There will be a Mimi Blais concert at sutterchip's house "Skunk Hollow" in Sutter Creek on June 30th. These house concerts are followed by all-night jam sessions (there are five pianos there and some people bring other instruments; search for "Ragtime Party" videos here on UA-cam).
The cup was filled up on this night when a Corvette Club that was at the bar next door heard the music from the emporium and decided to pile in! They were ... wild to say the least. ua-cam.com/video/-MY22KUIqic/v-deo.html
When are the June meetings? I'd like to go, especially if performers like Tom and Will Perkins are there. If heard Tom play live a few times. Interesting to hear a take on a well known rag. From what I can tell is Tom likes to dig up obscure ditties and make them his own.
I once read that Irving Berlin used to sight read music in sheet music stores around the turn of the century. You could have done it just as well if not better than he!
Indeed, every music store had a song plugger. If you wanted to know what something sounded like, you handed it to the plugger and she would play it (I say "she" for often it was a young woman).
Now I remember! It was the Scott Joplin movie where he was employed to play the songs in the stores! But Irving did it to. My point stands, you are just as good as they were!
I am not the pianist; I'm the videographer. Unfortunately, Tom is in ICU in a coma right now after a serious traffic accident on August 6th. He responded to touch for the first time today, and breathed without a respirator for a bit yesterday. He also had a punctured lung and broken ribs in addition to his head injury, so they've got antibiotics in him to help with the lung healing. But they're keeping him sedated for the time being.
He was slightly too fast. Also, he kept adding left-hand octaves in the final section when there weren't any, and the right hand had no phrasing whatsoever.
@@cdllc1956 Then why would Scott Joplin tell people never to play his pieces fast? Also, it is likely that he has not seen this comment, nor will he ever.
@@jacobschiller4486classical musicians trying not to be pretentious for 5 minutes. There is no “right” way to play any music unless you’re performing at symphony hall. Even if Joplin may have wanted the piece faster or slower, or didn’t want octaves in this particular section, etc; this is still a fantastic performance. This is not to mention that Tom is one of the best regarded ragtime pianists in his field. I think if anyone knows how to play Joplin’s repertoire properly it’s him.
Watching you play ragtime Tom makes me.more happy than just about any thing on the internet
I can watch these for hours
This is one of those rags you don't really hear much, but is actually really good. Kinda like searchlight or euphonic sounds
Yep yep
This is unbelievable sight reading skills. I'd need months of practice to play it at all and still not anywhere near as good as Tom.
Well in this case I don't think he was sight-reading, I'm sure he was familiar with the piece or at least had heard it before he played it.

This is the first video that I've seen anyone put anything in the tip cup for some awesome playing:-(

Perfect tempo, perfect, one the best rag by Joplin. Thanks.
Excellent
Bless Mr W who taught me this tune.
Bravo, wonderful playing! Really enjoyed hearing you!

perrrrrfetooooo!!!!!!!!1111
has he done the zelda theme?
Is the guy next to him his son? Did Tom ever have children?
No and no. That's fellow ragtimer Will Perkins. See his channel ua-cam.com/users/wilscoolvideos
@@Keeper1st Thank you for the response!

1902 actually

Cant you leave him have his fun? That's standart ragtime playing, you always change something up

Too fast? According to who? He's playing at 90 BPM. That's not fast by any means.
@@bencarter8324 It is a touch fast, but in a "saloon-type" atmosphere such as this one, it is just fine. 85 BPM would have probably been perfect.

too fast. Sorry
And I'm sorry that you know nothing of ragtime. This is quite leisurely. It's a perfect tempo for this rag.
