Hats off to George Cooper Sr. He stood up for both his daughter and wife without giving a damn what society and others thought. It's a shame that things won't go well for him in the show but till now in some ways he has been a way better parent than Mary. If not for him, Sheldon wouldn't have gone into college as well.
He's a better parent than Mary in every way except for the technical stuff - cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc. That she still calls Sheldon "baby" is also telling. She wants to make damn sure he remains reliant on her.
You can't really call him a better parent when he only has to do 20% of the actual parenting. Like no offense, but it's a lot easier to be a good dad when 80% of the work is done for you. Neither of them are great parents, they both have their own faults
@@bubbleblow7461 somewhat agree but only because I think George would do more if Mary didn't have to have everything her way. She can't handle anything being done other than her way. Makes her very much a micromanager which results in children who have no confidence and can't think for themselves, hide themselves (missy), rebel (georgie), etc. George being supportive of his kids makes them stronger than Mary ever could.
@@bubbleblow7461 I think if mary wasnt there, like actually disappeared, the family would be better off. They wouldnt eat dinners together etc but george would definitely provide and make sure they have everything they need and they wouldnt have to endure all the senseless drama mary creates
As a preacher's kid myself, I commend the writers of this show. Spot on. Extremely realistic. This is supposed to be East Texas in the early '90s after all.
Not even just in the 90s, this is still true today with hardcore Christians. Reason why I never talk to my extended family ever again, they're hypocritical nutjobs who think they're better than everyone just because they're Christians.
George is right. A lot of churches talk a big game about forgiveness and community but as soon as someone comes along that genuinely needs love and compassion but doesn't meet the communities reputation they are ostracized. Jesus stood with the marginalized and oppressed and was killed by religion allied with government.
i really applaud how the writers had george throw that clearly to pastor jeff, very much deserved unfortunately it looked like it missed its mark or probably bounced right off pastor jeff's hard head
Saw that happen at my father's church, youth pastor was divorced when he was hired then got married again later, head pastor told congregation he quit to start his new marriage. Ran into youth pastor at a fast food place a few weeks later. he said he had been fired because church didn't want a remarried minister. Confronted head pastor about it and all he said was" how did you find out? "
@@kimwit1307 that is spot on. I had a similar situation happen to me when I was 17 (gave a lecture on birth control the Synod didn't approve of) and I was excommunicated from the Lutheran Church. I was pretty much done with organized religion organizations after that.
The saddest aspect of this show is that we all know George is going to die when Sheldon is 14. I think Lance Barber has been absolutely brilliant as George and I will miss him enormously.
I think it’ll happen at the end of the show. He’s 12 in season 5 , so probably at the end of season 6. It could happen In season 7 , but I don’t think they’ll make it , and in season 5 there already setting it up
The problem is when Mary still wants to be among them and doesn’t see how ridiculous they treated her and how wrong they were .. she better not take her anger at Georgie or anyone else
I'm hoping not. I'm more thinking shes going to have an affair with pastor rob and that causes George to lose his mind and leave her. I'm honestly worried shes goibb to do something that's going to effect the entire family even more.
@@Generalphoenix8438 yes .. Mary is developing feelings for Rob … feelings she doesn’t have with her husband. What always bothered me about their relationship is how much Mary feels she ruined her life marrying him and how often she hinted that. How her children is her focus; mostly just Sheldon. How God is first regardless even if it means marrying her 17 yrs old child to a 28 yrs old woman! She seems to not care for her children in terms of guideness and thinking what is the best for them from their own prospective .. she is same with all but Sheldon knows what he wants while her other children are simply normal and with emotional capacities so they could be pressured or affected by her input .. more than Sheldon. I think in many ways .. Mary failed to support her children .. and while Georgie got support to work and found his calling .. Missy seems to be gone lost .. with no purpose and it’s sad how until the end .. she kept caring for Sheldon the most
@@ABirdOnTheMoon pretty much what I would have said. Mary cares more about image then asking them what they want. Sheldon alot like me so I get why it seems he doesnt care he really doesnt know how to properly. I'm not good with people and I can sometimes say things that hurt people when that's not my intention. Georgie will figure something out and who knows what it is. Missy is still young so she still has alot to understand and will do. George right now is the one I could say I'm worried about more with recent events. But he wont stop being a dad so we know that. But unfortunately we all know how this will end I guess.
I like George he speaks his mind and he stands up for what he believes is right, he just doesn't get much help from the wife cause his methods are like, don't bring God into this let us handle it and screw what other people think. Mary is like no God has to be in this and we have to care what other people think end of story.
Ik. I wish they would stop talking about Sheldon's father in TBBT like as if he was the enemy. Yes he cheated on Mary but she did the same shit. She is really a hypocrit cause she talks about having sex and not being married which she did before the kids were born. She got pregnant with Georgie and married George because of it. Then she talks bad about her sons actions and let's others do the same and not stand up for her son and in the TBBT she was sleeping with some other men like come on seriously. She isbtue worst person alive.
No, she is not like "god has to be in this" .... i can see decisions being made with god in it But for her Its "God has to rule over this and no other opinion is viable" I understand people putting god in control But she is using god for control
@@M.A.Y.Y There is a BIG difference between the two. God is in control when my son is being disrespectful to me and I pray “God, help me keep my temper.” When I claim I have a God-given right to control him, that’s me corrupting what God’s control means.
I like how they are finally showing Pastor Jeff's true colors. I always had a feeling we would stab Mary in the back. It's always the "good Christians" that pull this crap. I always found him annoying, specially how he would constantly act like Sheldon was in the wrong for not being Christian. Ik Sheldon could be annoying but he has the right to believe or not in God.
This would sound ridiculous to me, but I have a cousin who was kicked out of church and told her wicked way (wearing pants at work and a church goer told the pastor) was what was causing the church to fail. She was 16 at the time.

The thing about this show- a family is being torn apart, having all kinds of problems, yet the director/script somehow turn it into a subtle, bitter sweet comedy. You can both smile or feel sad, or both, depending on who you are. Notice the background "honky tonky" music at the start, which somehow keeps the mood light. Behind the scenes guys are brilliant
Pastor Jeff is a hypocrite the bible is against divorce and he got married just so he can justify having sex which is not right for a Christian church leader
This so much. After all that was done for Pastor Jeff during and following his questionable first marriage and getting him together with his current wife, for him to stab Mary in the back and shun the family is despicable and ruined the character for me. When we had a similar unplanned pregnancy situation in my family nearly a decade before the timeline in Young Sheldon, people weren't happy with the situation, but didn't act that bad. This storyline feels very contrived to force a chain of events to justify trying to get back on Big Bang's canon of Sheldon's home life being chaos and George being a bad father who cheated on his wife. Yet, I don't recall any mention in Big Bang of Georgie having a kid, and other characters seem to be thrown under the bus to make George the sympathetic character, who I guess the writers will protray as driven to cheat because of family pressure and his wife's relationship with another man... a relationship that was never mentioned in Big Bang.
The longer this show goes on the more it becomes clear George was the sensible parent while Mary was the one stirring up problems. Makes you wonder what would've happened if George had lived.
A very realistic portrayal of how many (though not all) so-called Christians behave; if the Cooper's were big donors, pastor Jeff would be singing a different tune.

1:40 "No, no. Just a little leave of absence till things settle down" Semantics. At my old job, I would hear this upper-management politics from time to time. "We didn't fire her. We just transferred (demoted) her to another department, freed (excluded) her from meetings, and encouraged her to seek employment elsewhere"
@@manbeman1819 Most bosses don't even say "you're fired" either because, once again, office politics. Another boss of mine, from another company, explained this to me. About the difficulty of hiring new applicants when applicants ask about the turnover rate of the company during the job interview. Instead of saying "we fired them all" they say "they quit", or "we let them go" as in "we accepted their resignation" and let them go. The sementics here is who took the initiative. If the job applicant hears "fired", they think this place is brutal as f*ck and unforgiving of mistakes. If the job applicant hears "quit", they think the employees weren't good enough and that it's not the company's fault.
It’s illegal to fire a employee without a legitimate reason. Asking Mary to “take a leave of absence “ due to her son’s personal life would be grounds for a lawsuit.
Every baptist I know always preaches about not being judgmental but then end up judging other people themselves. I’m just saying that this show nailed it with how they portray baptists
Well here’s the flipside. I grew up as a preachers kid, fundamental legalistic Baptist. The reason people are asked to step down during situations like this is because leaders of the church are held to a higher standard, and they are expected to be above reproach. The Bible does talk about being above reproach. While I personally disagree with this, I also do understand the purpose for it. It’s very difficult to have standards in your church and then have people in leadership positions not following those standards. So it’s sort of like damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Either way somebody’s going to be upset. It’s just a matter of picking which side you want to be upset with you. They choose to try to show a good example to the general public as a way of encouraging them to come into the church, hopefully making the decision to live for the Lord. To people who are not Christians, and the outside world in general, it appears to be hypocrisy. Actually it’s not. It’s about trying to live up to God’s standards, and also giving people who are going through these difficult situations the time away they need to get their house in order. How can somebody possibly be in a leadership position and counsel others when they are personally going through a crisis? I just now started watching it so I don’t know what the previous seasons entailed, but as it turns out when my parents ended up divorcing years later, my dad gave up his church. Same philosophy. How can you be a leader in a church if you don’t have your own house in order?
@@ddss3042 I agree with everything you said, it's just that in this case it is a complete hypocrisy because Pastor Jeffs life has been a mess on many occasions and he has no moral right to ask anyone to step down because if they were to set things in order they should start with him (also I know its a fictitious comedy and so they are not going to study the bible to write his dialogue but if he were real he wouldn't be fit to lead anyone because from what I've seen his bible knowledge and understanding is somewhat lacking)
@@a.m.s6611 bingo! I think it is very difficult for Hollywood to write stories about genuine faith in legitimate churches because let’s be honest, Hollywood doesn’t have a clue what a real Christian is. They just find someone with a bad story and take it from there. From the outside you can make any story you want. Only those on the inside truly know the genuine hearts of the vast majority of the people in the church. And those that aren’t? Well let’s hope the longer they are in the church and with fellow Christians their heart will soften.
George has a good point. I grew up in a very tight knit church and I ended up dating one of the elders sons. He became pushy and went waaay to fast for me but then told me I had to "Compromise" Even though I already was but he wasnt. I broke up with him and then the elder started bad talking my family and me...We ended up being pushed out of the church. They always talk about community but one slip up or one bad word from someone can change so much. Its honestly really sad.
That's probably the most accurate depiction of working in a church ever (they love it you help them but the moment you need them they screw you over, unless it's covering up the worst crimes, then for some reason they help you), not to mention how some people are so dedicated to one specific church that they stay with it even after it screws them over (my mother keeps waiting me to go back and do things at the church that I grow up at and used to do youth work for but eventually quit after 10 years of basically no support, never being listened to, which led to three youth projects being ruined, and just generally disrespected, I'm not working for them again, definitely not for free, I loved my job and think that it was important to give teens that space once a week but I'm not doing it there again). I'm so glad to be done with my old church and churches in general and their false community (I still get told that people are asking about me and how I am, yet I've not once over the last few years gotten a single phone call or knock on the door by those concerned people,, cause it's not really about how I am, it's about the fact that I'm not there on a sunday).
The teaching moment idea was rlly good. If Jeff had 2 cents of compassion, he could hv said to the congregation " Lets all talk about the current situation. Those who've committed no sin in their life can come up to the mic and say what they want about Georgie and the Coopers."

I agree, you shouldn't hate this preacher. You know why? Cause he doesn't exist, he was invented by TV writers who know they can get away with trashing Christians and nothing bad'll happen to them. Notice these writers never trash "other" religions.
This is spot on the church treats women like property if the spawn is misbehaving the mother is instantly to blame. Good for the husband to stand up against the preacher.
When you word it like that, you kinda made the mother sound neglectful. It shows that they haven't taught their son about responsibility and shame. Gerogie shouldn't have had sex, especially untill after marriage. You know this is the truth. Also about the judge and forgiveness Judge quote: basically do not step on others to make yourself feel better. The church didn't do that, they have a reputation to maintain. They can't have a neglectful mother like that being apart of it, or it's just a mockery of the church. So long as the church didn't have their kids impregnated, they aren't hypocrites but professional.
The "property" thing is not exactly like what you think. It means that the Man sees his woman as something valuable and that it is his obligation to protect his treasure. A man's duty is to guide and protect his wife. If you are gonna bring that up, then they have both failed as parents when Georgy impregnated the woman especially when he was young.

Yes mary was neglectful but it isn't her fault that her oldest son chose to be an idiot and knock up a woman. Stop blaming parents with this type of shit
@@ricky18redblack31 It's only partially Mary's fault. On the one hand, yes, it was her and George's responsibilities as parents to make sure Georgie acted right since he's not a full adult who's out of the house and etc. On the other, they have to raise someone like Sheldon, who in himself is such a social disaster that as a parent she can't help but worry that he'll be okay, so she can then only give so much attention to Missy and Georgie in comparison. Mistakes were made and not enough was done, but the circumstances are so abysmal that such a thing can understandably happen. The real problem then becomes the church ostracizing Georgie's actions and then blaming his actions along with those of his siblings on Mary. Rather than attempting to work with her, to help her family go towards a path that they might see as virtuous and stable, they would rather cut her out like she's a blister they would rather slice off than treat properly to heal. The church within this circumstance resembles more a self-applauding party rather than a group who's dedicated to making the world a better loving place, that applause being given to themselves while they are not guiltless either. Mary has shown through her position and character that she is a devout Christian who wants to follow the scripture and do right by it and others, but because her family is a damn mess, the church doesn't want anything to do with her since they'd rather stay away from the trouble and judge it from their hypocritical space.
1:10 You see the look on George’s face? Part of it might be because Mary mentioned she talked about this with Pastor Rob, but I think George was seriously disgusted with Mary’s answer about how she’d be judgmental if someone else did this. Though the main issue is Pastor Jeff. As everyone including myself pointed out, the Cooper family, especially Mary, have always been there for him and he’s going to turn his back on them when they need him? Mary who kept her mouth shut when she found out that Pastor Jeff lied about his salary to get himself a trophy wife and blamed it on the woman? No, I’m not letting that go. Then, in the episode before this, he said a baby was going to hell because it was born out of wedlock! An innocent baby! This shows that Pastor Jeff is not a true friend to Mary and you’d think that she’d finally see what a screwed up person she is, but no! She still cares about what he and every other screwed up person in Medford thinks, which is probably where Missy gets it from! What’s worse is that the town condemns Georgie while worshipping Pastor Jeff who is way more horrible than Georgie is! Yes, Georgie made a mistake but he is trying to be there for the kid any way he can. All Pastor Jeff cares about is looking out for number one. You know what really scares me? Mary’s going to really start pressuring Mandy into marrying Georgie just so she could get back in the town’s good graces.
TBF though this is just Georgie's latest mistake. People were probably already looking down on Georgie since he decided to drop out of highschool when he didn't need to. They also know that he's helping run an illegal gambling room. Granted they probably enjoy it but I doubt they would defend him if he got arrested for it. Finally the issue with Mandy is more complicated then a simple mistake. He lied and manipulated a woman 12 years older then him so he could sleep with her. Sure we the audience know that's not really happened but it is what happened from there perspective.
@@nicolasneal204 I do agree about how what Georgie did was more than a simple mistake. I actually discussed that in another comment but is not the point of this comment. My point is about how judgmental the people are acting to the point of turning on a family they considered friends, including Pastor Jeff after all Mary has done for him. Mary saying she would do the same if this happened to someone else makes her no better than them.
George speaks more sense the longer the show goes, Mary stands by the church over her own marriage and family with her deluded judgements but the church is quick to disregard her. George was right to leave as if they cannot support forgiveness of a good family then that is not being a Christian community. Have to say the show is getting better the more splintered the family becomes.
Mary is a bigot and sanctimonious. She's more concerned about her social reputation and her image than about her family. What's with the whole "what would Jesus do thing"?
Not all Christians are like that or were like that. I remember back in 1992, which is when this episode takes place, a Christian woman who didn’t judge me, she helped me through a tough time and also helped me better understand Legalistic versus Evangelical Christians.
@@AlbertaRose94 I can’t speak for Southern Baptists as I have never been one. And I can’t speak for southern states as I was raised in the Midwest. But I have seen what you describe happen over and over again in churches. Especially over the last 20 years. People forget that Christians are still human beings and make huge mistakes, just like everyone else. The only difference is that hopefully they recognize the error of their ways, repent and try to do better.
I know Mary comes off as a judgemental jerk sometimes, but everyone knew that her heart was always in the right place. She always helped people, the first to volunteer when the church or anyone within it needed help. But as soon as one of her kids stepped out of line and made a big mistake, everything she'd done was null and void, and worse she's forced to either blame them (which I don't believe she, as a person, can) or her son (which is kind of hypocritical since she was in a similar situation when Georgie was born). I think I feel the worst for Georgie. He knows he made a mistake, and he's trying his best to try and act responsibly and minimize the damage inflicted on everybody, but this is all spiralling out of control and it's too much for one man to do anything about. One man can't do anything when the forest is ablaze. I have a feeling the season is going to end on a downer, I think the inevitable is about to happen to George, and that will mark the true beginning of the tragedy.
You are correct that the loss of George sr will be a tragedy because the kids will lose their only supportive parent and will spend the rest of their lives listening to Mary say bad things about him.
Lets be honest. There is nothing bad about this situation. In their situation they can turn this entire thing into a blessing, but Mary is making problems everywhere.
@@danatedawg1018 I really like the fact that the timeline forces them to slow down and not rush things. And the pre-established Cannon also makes these events expected rather than forced. Exactly. If God deemed that a girl should have a damned good right hook then it’s a shame to punish her for it. Just like if a bitch has a glass jaw it’s not okay to get mad at the person who punched him.
Wow pastor Jeff after what Mary done for you when your wife left you and when you were dating Robin and how George helped you out with your baby room. You just confirm my believe you can’t trust anyone
For all those folks relocating to the bucolic small towns, take note. Judgement, conformity, exclusion, cliques, class....ah, yes, life in a small town.
Wow,I never knew this was the case in churches. I'm Christian and yes,we're tight knit but no one has ever been kicked out or talked down upon when things get rough, instead we help each other out. It's sad to see this and the fact that it happens in real life.
I was shunned by my church for drinking wine. but they actually never observed me do it. It was on the basis of an empty wine bottle seen in my home. Goodbye church..have a nice life!
My family has always had to move once people in the church got tired of my father, who works for the church. No other reason, but of course, they would cite other reasons.
We switched churches because our original pastor tried to keep the boy living with us from attending service. Said boy had already been given to my parents by his parents and he was asked not to attend because his cousin accused him of sexual assault on her. She admitted to the entire town two months later that she had lied and just wanted to ruin his life. That pastor? Tried to get my parents to see that he was just trying to protect the church's image and did fire my mom from her position on the worship team because that also looked bad with the boy living with us. We didn't go to church in that town until that particular church shut down due to no attendance a year later.
Our former pastor (before his resignation & transfer to PA) removed my wife and I from our church, including Sabbath services. This wasn't approved by the church board & no one knew. We've seen been going back (after some time after the pastor left) Maybe it's not fully the "community's decision but rather the pastor's, as it was in our pastor's decision to kick us out)
If I were the young pastor I think afterwards I would have had a discussion with the senior pastor and then seriously considered resigning. It is clear the how much love and forgiveness is in the senior pastor and their church in general. I thought what he said to Mary about what she would have done to someone in her situation followed by the prayer for help and understanding was really what we should expect from a minister.
Ok i see something interesting, the way Mary reacts and talks about the pastor is actually sad for George, she talks about the pastor like a close friend, a confidant if you will, she has never spoke to George in that way, i can understand his jellosy, he did have a moment with another woman, but it was that a moment, he did everything he could to not see her again, the problem is, Missy is now suspecting something similar
@@ni3070 Why is Mary denying anything is inappropriate about her relationship with the pastor, to George's face, when it's clear to anybody who observes them that it is and she knows that it is?
In TBBT Sheldon mentions that his dad had an affair during Sheldon’s first spring break in college and he walked in on them, that’s why he knocks three times. I wonder if the show is going to stay true to that storyline. If so I wonder if he does it in response to Mary and Robs growing relationship.
An excellent illustration of why people are leaving the Christian churches. If Jesus came back today these so-called Christians would call the cops on him while he ministers to the homeless, hungry, and ill. Today's Christians are yesterday's Romans.
keeping kinda "inside" the church that Mary defends so much, no wonder the southern baptist convention is experiencing a historical declining in membership. The former head of the convention even said that if they keep losing 240 thousand members every year half the churches within the convention would be closed by 2030. Some people are seeing though the bull I guess
The case is that he had his intended plan from the start. From his POV, it was already looking bad because of Georgie, then he heard about Missy punching that kid. He probably is aware that the Coopers are getting ganged up on, but he's got a business to run. Also, you'd be surprised what power followers can have on their leader.
“As leader of this church we are held to a higher standard” Bitch please ! You got divorced! As I understand. It’s also VERY frowned upon.. much more a pastor!!
First of all remarried is not frowned upon in every denomination secondly Jeff didn't mutually agree to divorce his wife or decide on his own she left him and he didn't have any control over it and third he did not marry his new wife for lustful Reasons I'm pretty sure they loved each other they just were in a hurry to actually get married because they couldn't hold back on the other thing they didn't get married just so that they could be intimate I think it's important that we all be forgiving of one another but it makes sense that if someone is in a compromising position for many reasons they should be at least temporarily removed from their position of leadership because when they're in a position of leadership they are a model to other people and other people are relying on them for guidance and an example it also gives that person who's being given a break time to have more privacy and space and the ability to deal with their personal affairs and private means that they're no longer loved or welcome in the church community nor that they can't receive the benefits of church like financial aid guidance babysitting and other services that any kind of church or Community would provide
@@CP-yd7lp remarriage is forbidden in the bible unless the spouse dies. Pastor Jeff did marry his wife just to have sex with her, I watched the episode. Giving Mary a break is fine, but he didn't help her nor did he try to remind people that they shouldn't be judging what her son did. You can't be a role model when you don't practice what your preach.
As far as I know the Catholic church is very strict on the issue of divorce and remarriage which I totally respect and even largely agree with that view but my best understanding is that the Orthodox church and many Protestant faiths are okay with remarriage after a divorce also as for how Pastor Jeff handles Mary I don't know talk to the congregation about their Behavior towards Mary and her family he said that he would talk to them but we don't know if he did maybe he did it off screen and the next time that the family went to church he didn't say anything bad to Mary or about her and he was giving that sermon about how we must all love one another and after Sheldon told him off for that and stormed off and his family left Pastor Jeff then went to Mary's house to talk to her personally and tell her that the church will always be her family and that he hated seeing her walk away so he tried to make amends with her it's important to realize that no one is perfect and just like Georgie made a mistake because he's human the people of the congregation including the pastor will sometimes make mistakes because they are only human and part of forgiveness is for giving people and they may be fail to forgive or otherwise somewhat off because we are all imperfect people
This is so sad. And George Sr is 100% correct. This is NOT what church family should be like!! In this situation at my church, the experienced Mums and Dads take the new couple under their wing. They give them a place to share their feelings, and support them. And the whole church helps practically. New Dad has to work? Someone will volunteer to take / go with New Mum appointments. They need baby clothes, or furniture for the nursery? Church comes together and passes things down, or gifts things. We make a meal roster to cook for the new parents for the first few weeks after the baby comes, so that they don’t have to worry about making meals when they’re exhausted. That’s how church family is supposed to be. And it makes me sad that so many aren’t showing that love and compassion.
"We're not joining another church." 23 years later, Mary Cooper tells Alfred Hofstadter that she works at the church in The Convergence Convergence. So I wonder if Mary either got her job back or she DID join another church.
I was actually excommunicated at the age of 10 for defending a man that was gay at church. I still remember saying "if God said to love one another and not judge each other why are you doing it to this man?".
Pastor Jeff is clearly the villain. Mary was always there for him she helped him out in both of his marriages. Even when his first wife divorced him and he was lonely she was there but he just stabbed her over here.
TBF though he doesn't really have the ability to actually sway the community. It's been shown many times that Pastor Jeff struggles to effectively reach the community. In all seriousness if he sided with Mary the people would have been outraged and likely get him replaced.
If you're meant to treat your congregation like your extended family then they should be there to support you. Not stab you in the back the second you're out of earshot.
Sheesh, Mary is going to turn into one of those girls who just wants to fit in and dosent care if she's walked all over or if people crap on her family. And then she'd get upset at her family for standing up for themselves because she wants to fit in. It's like a need to be socially accepted so as not to be alienated or alone. Mary really needs to set her priorities straight.
Being a Christian myself, it has happened very similar to me and my family. In my opinion Christians, most of the time shoot the wounded when we’re supposed to help patch them up and put them in the right direction. This is a true example of what happens in some churches.
This happened to a girl I know. Her father was a pastor in Texas, and her brothers had gotten into some moral troubles (teen pregnancy, fights, and be rowdy), so, in classic Protestant fashion, they kicked them out of the church and refused to forgive them. It was so bad that everyone in their town refused to do any business with them and treated them lower than dirt. They were forced to leave the state because the word spread that much. I have noticed protestant Texans are the biggest hypocrites in the entire world. They preach forgiveness and southern hospitality, yet as soon as things go wrong, they make sure you suffer for it.
I'm very sorry that you had this experience however I have to emphasize that things like this don't always happen not all churches are like this there are many properties were people are much more forgiving and it doesn't reflect what Christianity teaches that just reflects mistakes that people in the congregation can make don't confuse the two and don't let it affect your relationship with God
I love how George Sr. Stands up for his family. I was texted by kids in my conformation class and the pastor said to me “boys will be boys.” I thought to myself, you are supposed to teach love, kindness and niceness to your fellow man and you give me a load of this bull? The only time I went back to church was when I was paid to go because I worked in the church daycare
Sad to say that this is scarily accurate. The ones that are judging you for your mistakes are usually the ones who preach forgiveness and how not to judge.
so many think they're holier than thou but yet things happening in their lives too that are just as bad if not worse but they're so quick to judge others
Everyone says it but I’ll say it too. Love George’s reaction. The church and their “leaders” talk high and mighty and use big words to make themselves feel powerful and holier than thou, but in reality they’re more judgmental and corrupt than the people they condemn. Quicker to take the easy route than the hard one. They talk about sin derived from natural urges and yet forget about the worst ones. Pride and Apathy (sloth) being the 2 biggest ones. They think they’re better than everyone else and don’t care about anyone else’s actual struggles. In a way, they’re more psychotic than the people they condemn. Jesus preached knowing we’d fall short, that’s why he forgives us. We’re just human, the church thinks it’s God (when it’s not), and we forget that and need to start remembering it. Rant over.
Hate to hear that since there is has been only one person in all of history who can save you (Jesus) & there's no one but yourself you'll be able to blame when you stand at Judgement.
@@youmustcreateachanne other than doctors(most if not all medical), fire fighters(most first responders in general), environmental engineers(those whose job is for humanity's well being in the short and long term), and a myriad of other professions that people often thank god for when you should actually be thanking that doctor who spent a dozen years of their life, hundreds of thousands of dollars, and many many sleepless nights to get the point where they can save you. but yeah if you believe that Jesus and judgement after death are the only reasons to do good so you wont get punished your already in the wrong mind set.
I am a believer but at the same time, I have seen some judging and hypocrisy in church in real life as well, that is really not acceptable. Pastor Jeff in this episode could have used this situation to give a sermon about gossip and judgemental behavior. Instead he fired Mary and basically made the Coopers outcasts. After all that they have done for him.
This is the EXACT issue we are experiencing in our politics. Churches teach their parishioners how to be self-righteous, judgmental, and rigid to accepting others who are different. This Young Sheldon scene demonstrates pure hypocrisy!! You go, George!!
I am on George's side. Missy did good. Sometimes it is necessary to haul off and knock someone on their ass. I was bullied in school. The one regret I have is that I didn't haul off and knick a few more people on their asses.
Frankly one of the biggest reasons why I left religion behind. They talk a big game about community, love, and forgiveness, but at the end of the day, they will cast you aside the moment your reputation is tarnished, even if you did nothing to tarnish it. It's all about protecting their image. What's worse is when they try to get you to come back by guilting you. My parents do that all the time, and they refuse to realize that it only drives me away further. All their proselytizing makes me less, not more, likely to go back to the church, and I have no intention to do so. Not now, not ever.
I like how Pastor Rob tried to fight for them. From what I have seen, he seems to be more progressive than many church going southerners. I'm a Christian, and I am not one to judge people in this way.
After all this, how can George be the bad guy for his "affair"? It seems that constantly he's the voice of reason but Mary always chooses the church and community over him and family. I am guessing that it's because we're seeing it through the eyes of a child but then we wouldn't be seeing George still being the voice of reason throughout the show.
There is no excuse for cheating but I guess, we can make an exception and can understand why he cheated when he has got an wife like Mary who has always blamed him for everything, after everything he has done for the family and putting their needs above him, even it costed him a better job opportunity in another state, so Mary could be with her mother.
Such a spot on example of what churches are like. A friend of mine got pregnant when we were in high school; since we were all Catholic, she decided to have the baby since the church considered abortion to be an unforgivable sin. Her boyfriend married her and joined the Army to provide for his new family, dropping out of school to do so. She finished high school with the help of her parents and got a part time job to help save up for a house of their own. The church basically expelled the entire family, saying that their daughter's out of wedlock pregnancy was not acceptable. This despite the family asking the church for spiritual support and guidance. The whole thing was disgusting. It was one of many incidents that led be to walk away from organized religion. I don't need another man to tell me how to approach my faith.
Well there is where the writers took some creative liberties. Having grown up in a church like this I can tell you going through a divorce and keeping your pastoral position would not have been tolerated. How do I know? Because when my parents decided to get a divorce my dad gave up his church. He was the pastor. I have seen this happen many times unfortunately. If the pastor screws up he is fired or he leaves of his own accord. He never ever ever stays. This simply would not have been tolerated back in the timeframe of that day. The writers are going out of their way to put enough truth in for people to speak harshly of Christians, assuming everything in the show is true. And it just isn’t.
Interesting that Pastor Jeff wasn’t portrayed as the smug holier-than-thou while sacking Mary, that I would’ve thought most people in the world would love to portray him to be. Instead, he was in a dilemma - wanting to be on Mary’s side but basically lacked the spine while giving in to the “community’s” gossips. Thankfully, that turned out to be good writing - the compassion he showed Mee Maw at the end-of-season tornado. (Granted, he probably showed his gratitude after having a shelter to save his life, but most lesser men in his position would’ve still snitched).
A similar thing almost happened to me, I'm a 19 year old Sunday School teacher and last year there was a rumor that went around that I cheated on my girlfriend so the youth pastor almost had to ask me to take a break from teaching, fortunately though him and I are close enough that he knew it was a lie and I never had to stop what I love
If anything the church should applaud Georgie for taking responsibility for his actions. Everyone can make mistakes but not everyone takes responsibility for their actions. They could set Georgie as an example of what men should do in this kind of situation.
I actually had a friend in college who dropped out and got a job as the church secretary where her family had attended for years. When her parents divorced, she was asked to resign. She did. She also left the church as a member. She even changed denominations.
This would have been more believable if the church hadn't previously looked the other way when Pastor Jeff got divorced and then remarried quickly thereafter. In the 80s getting divorced would have ended a pastoral career, and then getting remarried would have ended any chance of any sort of church leadership.
This could happen in more than a church. This happens in business, sports teams, political parties, news media, etc. Have you ever seen an event that society frowns upon, says so to the 'party' and that party says forgive them and mind your own business? This is not just a church issue. Politicians are forced to resign, a business worried about their balance sheet-employee has to go. Do you think a baseball team would have no issue if a teammate got another teammates sister pregnant? People will react and demand exactly what happened here.
Facts: Mary was not raised in a Christian household. Mandy tells Meemaw her parents response was “You’re on your own.” Meemaw admits that was their response to Mary’s news. 1. Mandy’s secular parents responded negatively to the news of an out-of-wedlock pregnancy. 2. Mary’s secular parents responded negatively to the news of an out-of-wedlock pregnancy. 3. One small church responded negatively to the news of an out-of-wedlock pregnancy. 4. If you are secular you can condemn an out-of-wedlock pregnancy and no one cares. If you are a church goer people do mind. We are all human beings and should be held to the same standard, regardless of belief system.
I don't understand why pastor Jeff is judging Mary when he was going threw his demons, Mary was there for him. why couldn't he just do the same for Mary? he shouldn't be judging or anyone shouldn't be judging in first place cause their kids going to learn their mistakes,we were all teens we did dumbass stuff.
This episode made me realize how Mary and Pastor Jeff are just alike. Both hypocrites . When Georgie announced he was going to be a Dad, Mary's first thought was what will the congregation think about ME? Pastor Jeff? Same.
im gonna really fucking sad when george sr dies. i already feel terrible seeing him try his best but still struggle with feeling happy and loved at work and at home. things have been real tough for mary too. it hurts to see the family struggling through this rocky time. :(
Hats off to George Cooper Sr.
@@gheller2261 You're absolutely right about everything! George is indeed a better parent than Mary!

Every baptist I know always preaches about not being judgmental but then end up judging other people themselves. I’m just saying that this show nailed it with how they portray baptists
Catholics are just as bad, People love to judge. myself included.
Only those on the inside truly know the genuine hearts of the vast majority of the people in the church. And those that aren’t? Well let’s hope the longer they are in the church and with fellow Christians their heart will soften.
Not just baptists, all denominations do this. I've been to many denominations and seen this judgmentality at all of them
George has a good point.
If Jeff had 2 cents of compassion, he could hv said to the congregation

Also about the judge and forgiveness
Judge quote: basically do not step on others to make yourself feel better.
She might not know it, but she dodged a bullet getting fired. Cause if that's how they deal when things get tough, that ain't a good community

But
The guy sometimes speaks the truth and sticks up for Common sense and his family
Its really sad that when things got messy pastor jeff turns his back on the family after all they have done for him
"We're not joining another church." 23 years later, Mary Cooper tells Alfred Hofstadter that she works at the church in The Convergence Convergence. So I wonder if Mary either got her job back or she DID join another church.
Yeah, I thought about that too. Either she eventually got her job at that church back, or she eventually switched to a different church.

0:20 Love how George dismisses Pastor Jeff’s bullshit. Like that idiot thought George would be moved about the poor boys parents being upset😂😂
Yet another reminder why I don’t go to church anymore. This would’ve absolutely happened in the churches I grew up in, too.
Rant over.
Pastor Rob's face at 0:34!!! lololol
This is the one reason why I do not go to church.
Religion is often just a bunch of hypocrisy and extremism.
This
Hate to hear that since there is has been only one person in all of history who can save you (Jesus) & there's no one but yourself you'll be able to blame when you stand at Judgement.
0:15 George is totally right
Damn Pastor Jeff. When he had issues, Cooper family was there even letting him sleep in their home. Now this?
Mary Hypocrite Cooper finally hahaha
I wouldn't exactly say that Pastor Rob is more Progressive just that he's a little bit gentler in his approach which I appreciate
Hmm, you're right. He doesn't judge like some others, as all pastors shouldn't.@@CP-yd7lp
mom shouldn't judge any one considering she did it herself.
His affair is one of those "I don't agree with it, but I sure understand it" situations
There is no excuse for cheating but I guess, we can make an exception and can understand why he cheated when he has got an wife like Mary who has always blamed him for everything, after everything he has done for the family and putting their needs above him, even it costed him a better job opportunity in another state, so Mary could be with her mother.
@@everythingisawesome2903 I agree, there's no excuse but it feels like she was pushing him to it in a way. I feel bad for George.
@@cchavezjr7 when did she do that?
George is the best.
And somehow pastor jeff is still a pastor despite having gone through a divorce??
"Bunch of holy rollers with no lives" Well ain't that the truth! Good Christians my ass...
Sounds about right, which is one of the reason, most ppl leave the church alone.
GO TEAM MISSY
I don't understand why pastor Jeff is judging Mary when he was going threw his demons, Mary was there for him. why couldn't he just do the same for Mary? he shouldn't be judging or anyone shouldn't be judging in first place cause their kids going to learn their mistakes,we were all teens we did dumbass stuff.
Yeah especially when he knows how important Mary's faith is for her
This episode made me realize how Mary and Pastor Jeff are just alike.
