If you followed along in the series at one point Mary revealed her young rebellion style and if you read between the lines I believe she had substance abuse issues then I believe that she used her religious beliefs and relationship with god as her sponsor and the church and her faith in it as her 12 step program in addition on various occasions you could see her struggle and stumbled with her faith and relationship with god again i believe it shows the struggle of her life long battle with substance abuse in addition when Sheldon referred to his father on the big bang theory he described him as the unfaithful member of the marriage and as the beer swilling alcohol yet as in many episodes threw out the series it was always his father who questioned his mothers infidelity and tho she never is shown as a alcaholisim abuser when ever these episodes appeared it was his father who ? His short comings as the partner of the marriage in addition the issue of infidelity always seemed to circle around a member of the congregation or cloth I also think Sheldon also was aware of it was his mom he was discibeing as the beer swilling cheeting half of the marriage rather than his father rather than show him as valuebull as the weeker side of the family because men from Texas are supposed to be ruff tuff and strong as most men are viewed in society today as the abuser rather then the victim
