I don’t think the devs specifically tried to make it like that, if it was always heads or tails, we would find the all the specials would be very similar and the game would be boring and lack variety
@probably9380 Maybe, but it shouldn't be that specific specials have other specials that specifically counter them, it should be that specials can be countered by skill and not by needing a specific special
@Dan_34_Danthat would be ideal, however I still think it comes down to the fact that specials need variety, zooka is specifically made for getting splats, and inkstrike is purely for displacement and is mainly used in a safe position, you just cant compare the two
@Dan_34_Dan Splatoon is a strategic game, in some cases, inkstrike actually does beat zooka, ex: inking the zone. Of course in the case shown in the video of them splatting each other, zooka will always win because that is its purpose (to get splats). If all specials have the same purpose, the game would be balanced and it would be pure skill, but with the cost of less variety. This is also the case with the weapons, you cant compare splatter shot with e litre.
It's like rock paper scissors but you have to pick which one of the three you're going to use for the entire match and you're not allowed to change it.
I mean, id take the rock paper scissors approach and a team forced to use a support special that isnt cooler over everyone running trizooka or crab tank with 1 cooler like the old metas
Ooh hold up I've thought of a way to change bubble to make it a healthier and more interesting special 1) If the bubble breaks early, you get some of the special charge back; up to a maximum of 2/3rds. The amount of chargeback depends on the duration remaining, more time remaining more charge returned. 2) Attacks can no longer pierce bubble 3) In return, bubble has significantly less health and probably lower max duration. + the weakpoint is made easier to hit For me this solves bubble's matchup with tristrike and Zooka, cus now the bubble user can put it down to protect them from one of the shots of either special but not multiple. Plus they're insentivised to use it because they'll get most of their charge back by doing so. Becomes a much more reactive special I can see its matchup with booyah still not being great though? As either booyah breaks it super quick and the bubbler still dies or the bubble survives and the bubbler is completely safe
I once had trizooka and someone used bubbler, so I just continued my carbon roller brain and swam into the bubble. I died before I fired all three times, but I got two picks lol
But wasn’t rock paper scissors a good idea since blaster, umbrella, and dualie squelchers were meta in splatoon 2, which became the golden age of splatoon?
The difference is mains vs specials. With mains you have that weapon as a player the whole game and those broader classes allow more interactions between the differing weapons of each class. The matchups are also not impossible because it is influences by player skill,; blasters can direct dualies with good aim, dualies can outmanuver brellas or catch them out of ink, and brellas can just shoot the blasters by saving their shield for another fight. This is specials where if you don't have your counter special ready at the perfect time you just lose to the other special. It encourages special spammy play to always have the special ready to beat another. Also there is no counter between these like shown the zooka is never going to beat the bubble by aiming well, the bubble will never survive strikes which just ignore and shred it, and the strikes if popped in range of a zooka has no way of moving out of the way. They are both rps in name but completely different in gameplay.
Wasn't there a similar RPS style meta back when Ballpoint was first getting big? Inkjet was good into Crab because of the object damage buff, Cooler was good into Inkjet because the quick respawn mitigated half your team dying, and Crab was good into Cooler because Crab didn't have to kill anyone to get value and it could stall out the cooler duration. Would you say this was more or less healthy than the current special balancing?
Trizooka = 🪨 = Shiver
Big Bubbler = 📃 = Frye
Triple Inkstrike = ✂️ = Big Man
Agreed, it shouldn't be rock, paper, scissors it should be like a heads or tails but with skill instead of luck
I don’t think the devs specifically tried to make it like that, if it was always heads or tails, we would find the all the specials would be very similar and the game would be boring and lack variety

@probably9380 I respectfully disagree. You could still have variety, making it so it's skill based wouldn't affect the variety you could have.

I like rock paper scissors metas
It's like Pokemon type matchups :D

LET'S MAKE A NEW ROCK PAPER SCISSORS‼️🗣🔥
Rock Paper scissors?! PREFIRE REFERENCE?!
But wasn’t rock paper scissors a good idea since blaster, umbrella, and dualie squelchers were meta in splatoon 2, which became the golden age of splatoon?
They weren’t as hard counters as these specials, these weapons could still win against each other, Zooka can’t beat bubble
I thought that too

There are good and bad ways to do an RPS dynamic
@ProChara what is the best way to use rock, paper, and scissors mechanics in a game like this?
they really just went and said "we wanna overwatch now except no switching

At least bubler is good now
isn't this just counterplay?
Bad counterplay because there's no way to win, weapon counterplay is good because skill still takes a part in it
