  • Originally declared open in 1985, it has been growing ever since, TheLiving Museum of the North at Beamish lies about 10 miles South of Newcastle. Covering 350 acres, the open air museum is a treasure trove of English social history. Among the exhibits are two towns from the 1900s and 1950s with their banks, pubs, motor car workshops, general stores and a Masonic Hall. Many of the buildings have been donated by local councils and businesses who allowed the dismantling and reconstruction on the site
Transport round the museum is by vintage buses and trams which circle the site on a regular basis.
There is also a colliery, a pit village, station and two farms the exhibits are tun by 400 staff alongside 400 volunteers most of whom will be in period costume and very willing to answer visitors questions or give directions.
