The Eccentric Englishman
United Kingdom
Приєднався 22 сер 2022
I am an Englishman through and through. This channel aims to promote both the character, mindset and curious qualities of the English people. #theeccentricenglishman #England #english
I am proud of my heritage despite the mistakes we made over the years. The British Empire cruelly sold slaves - but it brought the industrial revolution to the world, railways to India and Africa, a curious form of democracylaced with our own sense of humour. - as well as out idiosyncratic language that is spoken by milions but misunderstood by so many.
We have a continuous history that dates back over a thousand years. We have 11th century castles and 21st century museums. We welcome thousands of tourists to our heritage towns, cities and villages. We have strange habits and customs but our craftsmen are the best in the world. We are an island nation whose coastline attracts visitors from home and abroad. We can be arrogant while hiding our light under a bushel and drink warm beer.

Bath A Timeless Journey Through History
Переглядів 127Рік тому
The City of Bath is the only World Heritage City in the UK. Dating back to Roman times and beyond, it remains a centre of fashion and culture. Beau Brummell, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Mary Shelley have all contributed to the attraction of Bath. Set between the Cotswolds and the Mendip Hills. Bath delights the tourists and literati alike. Stay at the luxury of the Royal Crescent or The Pr...
Unveiling the Christmas Cactus - The Ultimate Festive Houseplant

The Christmas Cactus, the houseplant that keeps on giving. With its delicately dramatic red flowers set off against the vibrant green leaves, it not only brings Christmas alive but quietly gives pleasure throughout the year before bursting into bloom twelve months later. This video is my first attempt to create a UA-cam clip simply using AI. I typed "Christmas Cactus" into InvideoAI and let it ...
Medieval Axbridge - The smallest town in Somerset
Переглядів 554Рік тому
Medieval Axbridge is the smallest town in Somerset but one of its gems. The town was granted its charter by King John but the decline of the weaving industry offered no incentive to modernise the homes resulting in the treasurty of medieval buildings that surround the town square. A similar decline in the local weaving industry preserved the medieval town of Lavenham in Suffolk. The Parish Chur...
The Dudley Canals and Caverns

The Dudley canal tour of its caverns is a fascinating cruise into the history of mining and the canals of the 18th century, Limestone, coal and iron ore mines relied on the canals to transport their products. Children worked alongside their parents legging the barges, setting the fuses, making the bricks and loading the cargoes.Life expectancy in the 1780s was 27years due to the high child mort...
Prawn and mushroom risotto/biryani - experimental cooking
Переглядів 102Рік тому
An eccentric experiment in cooking mushrooms, prawns, cream and rice while filming with an action camera - the Insta360 Go3. Having fun creating a tasty dish from leftovers inthe fridge. There is no recipe as such. No measurements or cookink temperatues. Just winging it. It turned out to be a very tasty dish that was part biryani and part risotto.

Peel castle dates back to the 11th cenrury when it was built by the Norwegian king, Harald Barefoot....
Some strange facts of the English Language
Переглядів 94Рік тому
The strange facts of the English language never fail to entertain me. Plurals, People, Places and the three-letter word, put, are examples of its eccentricity. Like magpies, we have borrowed and stolen words from many different langauges. We even took "penguin" from the Welsh! We are believed to have around 300,000 words in our dictionary of common words both written and spken compared to the G...

An English Village Cricket Match explained

The Englishvillage cricket match bears little relationship to other forms of the game like Test matches, One day games and twenty twenty bashes. The roles of the captains, batters, cowlers, fielders and umpires are explained in a light-hearted ...

This trip along the Dudley canals passes the Black Country countryside, through locks and down hidden tunnels. Patient coarse fishermen line the banks. (Correction -the figures given for UK anglers are completley wrong. In the 2020 - 2021 season there were 1,090,068 fishing licenses sold. a 15.8% increase from the previous yea.) Cruise the Canals of Birmingham: Uncover 8 Astonishing Facts You Never Knew About UK Canals!

We take a narrowbaot cruise on the canals of Birminham to see the city from a different viewpoint. Along the way, we learrn 8 fantastic facts about the canal network of England and Wales. We board at Sherborne Wharf opposite Brindley Place. The boat is comfortable with good visibility although I would suggest a seat in the bow for the best pictures. The 'bow' is the front of the boat to landmub...

The Dudley Tunnel is only 1.8 miles long not the 3miles stated in the commentary .
Thanks for the correction. I meant kilometres, not miles.
The finest collection of Medieval Ecclesiastical buildings in Northern Europe.
Awwww, should have come to Glastonbury. You can’t get more eccentric than us lot 🤣
Great video mate ... keep up the solid work, added a sub and some likes on your vids as i go thru them ... wish you lots more growth
Thank you, I was going to bemoan the loss of the Bookshop to the right of the Bishop's Eye until I saw the Market Book Stall. Wells on a Saturday was my treat to myself when I was at Downside, sang in a joint Carol Service and a DIY Messiah at the Cathedral 40 odd years ago. Apparently there are three distinctive Wells, one at least for the Moat which feeds the Marketplace, the other two? A few years ago the Moat was drained and cleaned so perhaps for information there. If you are able and can find a perch, perhaps a long time lapse video of the Saturday market, a Swan's Eye view:)
The Wikipedia article on the city of wells explains the three wells - two for the Bishop’s Garden moat and d the other for the marketplace fountain from where it runs down the gullies of the night street. Glad you liked it
Really a rainbow butterfly outside the cathedral??? Blasphemous- thanks - I won’t go there
What a nice trip to Lymington. I hope you enjoyed your lunch 🥰
I did! Thank you. great food and great compny
What a great journey 🙂 I hope you enjoyed your stay 🥰
Yes! Thank you! I’m back to Yorkshire again next month to video the Beamish museum
Very interesting visit into the past, shame about the droll piano in the background, more suited to a sad event.
I felt that the end of the video about the tragic death of the general was very sad.
Funny, the things you don’t see when you’re filming. Thanks for noticing
Beautiful,well done.
Thank you very much! I appreciate you taking the time.
Loved your presentation! Unable to visit your Wonderful Beautiful Country, your video was like I was walking with you!♥️🥰
thanks for taking the time to comment and glad you enjoyed ur
Great vid ... subbed
Not subbed - more of a personal trip down memory lane
It's Vicars Close, and they still are the Vicars Choral
we are lucky to live in a country with so much history
Wonderful video, stunning flowers! 😃💚👍
Just had a second flowering this Spring
Thanks but I prefer your voice!!
Thank you. I have taken the advice on board, and I will be doing the voice-overs in future
Wow Lovely Flowers ^^ Like 15 My friend, thank you for good sharing Have a good relationship
I'm very glad you enjoyed my first attempt at publishing an AI-generated video. I think a personal voiceover would sound better than the AI-generated ones.
Bath is a real gem to visit. There is so much to explore and every step you take will be remembered ! If possible take a few days to fully appreciate the beauty and historic sights of great interest….. and believe me … You’ll enjoy every minute ❤️
Hi Christine. Thanks for your comments. It is indeed a beautiful city but parking can be a problem
@@theeccentricenglishman As is the nature of the landscape… especially when we may not be used to hills and dales when walking ! 🚶🏻 Wishing you a great weekend, dear friend … 👍🏼
The beauty of those blooms at this time of year is Christmas blessing. May your holiday be happy and your spirit be light … Thank you for this little gift ! 🎁 🎄 ✨🌟✨ Merry Christmas 🙏🏼❤️

My Grandfather's design; the Marendaz Special. Lovely vid thank you
Glad to hear it brought back memories of your grandfather
Thank Your for this nice video.I like the blue belles and the other plants
Thank you for your comment I'm glad you enjoyed the video
I have lived in the Isle of Man for 16 years now and my one piece of advice is to stay away from Douglas- it is a dump 😂. Great video though , thank you
Thanks for the complimentary words. as far as Douglas is concerned, I could not possibly comment! Suffice it to say that there are so may beautiful places on the island
Would you say Ramsay is nicer?
It is a close-run thing but my vote would go to Peel over Ramsay for its many alleyways of fisherman cottages. My true heart lies with Port St Mary.@@endlessglizzys_.0233
Would've been nice had u not interupted the bit about the manx cats with your ad😢
Sorry about that. I didn't realise that the ad off the cat as well as the tail. I will check it out.
I grew up in the Isle of Man 🇮🇲 I had a wonderful childhood there, I’ve lived mainland Uk just over 9 years now. This time of year I especially miss it with Hop Tu Naa still cannot get used to Halloween over here and children not singing at your door 😊
Don't times change! My memories of the island go back to 1947 staying in Lily Duggan's boarding house in Port St Mary while her brother ran Duggan's Coaches around the island and the steam railway went much further than it does now. There were even ferries from Stranraer and Llandudnow
Very enjoyable with just the right pace.. To offer justice, to such fine historic houses *
Thank you for your kind words despite this being one of my earliest videos! The stabilisation left much to be desired.
Thank you
Thank you
Delightful video. Revealing the American connection was a fine thing. Thank you. If you visit again I hope the weather will behave itself and you will be able to show us even more of the beautiful and interesting town.
Thank you for your kind words. The American Bar is one of the happiest shrines I have visited. Great atmosphere
Thank you
In these videos you will see the Isle of Man through the same eyes than I did when I first visited the island in 1987. Many parts of the island have retained their beauty. (even though Peel is now twice as big as when I first visited the island) Greetings from Germany.
Danke, mein herr. (Is that right?) Believe me, it is not just Peel but the whole island has grown since I had my first summer holiday at Port St Mary in 1947! But as you say, the island has managed to retain its beauty. Thank you for your comment
My Mum lives in Peel and i miss it , this helped. Lovely , thanks.
I hope they have completed all the roadworks in Peel for your Mum's sake. The crab sandwiches at The Creek are as good as ever. Glad to have given pleasure
Nice of you to mention St Cuthberts, shame you didn't go in. Love Polly's stall, have spent a little too much there though.
Thank you. You have encouraged me to go back and concentrate on St Cuthberts. As you say. I rather skipped over it last time.
@theeccentricenglishman I also recommend St Thomas Church too.
Thank you.I will certainly go bac
Thank you so much for making this. Your narration is just my speed. I was lucky enough to visit Lavenham a decade or so ago and it’s nice to see that some places never change (probably a bit of an understatement in this case). Looking forward to watching more of your travels.
Thank you for your kind comments. I hope you enjoy some of my other English town videos.
Wow, what a neat place! My dad was in the US Air Force in the 70s and my mom bought a painting from a shop in Lavenham. She still has it hanging up in the living room. Now I can see why they always talk about visiting here! Time to get my passport! Thanks for doing this video, really like the Swan Hotel, so I can see why it’s so popular
I am glad to have been able to refresh your family history. Get that passport!
Lived & worked there 20 years ago. Still miss it
It was our home territory up to 11years ago. As you say, I miss it despite enjoying life in Somerset
Was stationed at Wattisham in Suffolk when serving with the RAF many years ago and was particularly struck with this village’s antiquity. Especially noteworthy being the very broad main street, which looks to be narrower now. Really enjoyed the piano playing in the background. Very easy listening!
Thank you for your kind comments. And thank you for Wattisham. You provided wonderful Air Traffic Control when I was flying a Piper Cherokee from Earls Colne!
You sir, have my subscription.
For which I am exceedingly grateful. You are a gentleman and a scholar
Very good video and I have subscribed. Thank you for your sharing, keep going. Greetings from Hong Kong.
Thank you for taking the time to subscribe - and returned greetings to Hong Kong where my two grandchildren were born. Fascinating, if troubled, city.
thxs for this. interesting and informative. well done
Thanks for the encouragement.
Fantastic video looks like a lovely place
It is as lovely as it looks - and the 'natives' are very friendly. well worth a visit.
What a lovely place - not heard of it before!
It is quite lovely and well worth a visit. Glad you enjoyed it
What a lovey video! I must visit the town myself now! Hope you are doing well 😊
Thanks, Matt. I think you wuld really enjoy it.
Lovely place, which I had never heard of before.
It really is a hidden gem, Many people have heard of medieval Lavenham but overlook Axbridge
Yes, I understand some eccentric UA-camr did a video about Lavenham.
Yes, I remeber him. A curious fellow! @@bobconner1598
Axbridge is a really special place to visit. These precious towns are, thankfully, well preserved. Many a year since I was there, but once seen never forgotten. I’d advise anyone to take a look…. Thank you so much for such a detailed video and narration. 🙏🏼
Thank you for your kind words. Axbridge is a Somerset treasure
What a beautifully preserved town well worth a visit thank-you for sharing
Than you. I'm glad you liked it. It is not just a preserved town but one with an active community

Sorry, I don't inderstand "Promo sm"
Lincoln is such a lovely city, and the Cathedral is also impressive. The people there were so nice and friendly!
Glad you liked it. I will tell my "Lincoln" sister about your comment about the people. Thank you
Fantastic job, liked the canal and narratives! 😊 Though I have to admit that I am not keen on the dark tunnels in general. 😜
I am with you about dark tunnels although the barge's lighting was good. My problem with the 9month old baby on the bench beside me for the whole journey. Bless her, she was bored out of her tiny mind!
Wonderful ! Happy weekend my dear friend 🤗❤️👍🏼
You are a very loyal friend. Bless you. Will you be watching the football on Sunday? I have so much more respect for our lady footballers than the arrogant men.
Great video and a good display of the Manx weather. Rain and fog one second, glorious sun the next…. Snow 5 minutes later.
You know the island then! I am still trying to edit as much rain as I can from my Douglas footage. It rained! Castleown was brighter. The two capitals video should go live within the next week. Thanks of the comment
@@theeccentricenglishman I say keep the rain, keep it real 😂👍
