  • Hello everyone - during our recent trip to Newcastle we visited Beamish, The Living Museum of the North.
    I was so excited to see an authentic, re-modelled North English town and explore its many areas, dating from 1820’s, traveling forward to the 1950’s.
    From the website:
    Beamish is a world famous open air museum which brings the history of North East England to life at its 1820s Pockerley, 1900s Town, 1900s Pit Village, 1940s Farm, 1950s Town and 1950s Spain’s Field Farm exhibit areas.

    Visited Beamish today. 7th September 2024. Worth every penny, and tickets allow free return for a year. Incredible amount of historic articles. Great atmosphere, helpful and knowledgeable staff. Absolutely loved it. Thank you Beamish Museum.

      I’m not sure a 100 year old recipe is the same experience 😅 - always a good excuse for a beer though 🍻

    I went there in 2017.. in the spring... really lovely. Spent about 3.5 hours there during the week, quite empty. Windy and sunny outside.

    Looks like you had a very good day out! I've been there loads over the years and with the 1950's town and farm, it's easily something that might take three days to see everything!
    Just to give a little more info, the place was started up in the 1970s. As far as I know the only original buildings are the 1940's farm and the Pockerly Hall and its barns over in the 1800's section, part of that is medieval if I recall correctly. Everything else in the 1800's was translocated and rebuilt there. So it's a geniune medieval church and wagonway yard and engine shed you can see there, they jsut got moved.
    Pretty much all of the pit village is translocated, apart from the chip shop which was purprose built, it might be a recreation.
    Most of the 1900's town and all the railway station is translocated, the big red shed there was custom built. The front of the free Masons temple was transfered but the rest of the building had to be rebuilt but all the furnishings inside are authentic. The bakers and chemist/photographers opposite the masons is a recreation too.
    And last but not lest, the entire 1950's town is a recreation of those buildings, except the 1950's farm which was translocated. The 1950s cinema has just been opened up too so that town is pretty much completed! :)

      @@NoFormalTraining this is awesome thank you so much for that extra context! I did some research beforehand and tried to speak to as many of the staff as possible to find out more! Isn’t it just fascinating that they translocated and rebuilt entire villages and towns? Honestly it was such an incredible experience.
      Nice that you’ve been there lots of times and saw many changes and developments! What is your favourite section? Thank you for taking the time to leave this comment!

    • @TipsyTofuTravels
      @TipsyTofuTravels  6 місяців тому

      I did! The dentist was so cool, probably my favourite part. There was a guy demonstrating how the procedure would have worked. Also went to the pharmacy and the worker was talking to me about a looming threat in Europe and I loved how we were both playing along with history and getting carried away 😂
