Thanks for the video! Honest question here with no ill intent behind it, in a market such as this where employers can get hundreds to thousands of applicants for a job within days, especially with the advent of AI plugging up the pipelines, do you honestly feel that recruiters are able to look at each applicant?
I’ve worked with talent acquisition teams and with them being so swamped and understaffed due to layoffs, I find it hard to believe there is no screening tool utilized at all. I’ve heard from some teams that they have some sort of way to quickly screen applicants or I’ve seen recruiters out on LinkedIn that they might not even look at all applicants unless they have a referral. What are your thoughts about that?
Many thanks again for the video! All things are nuanced so I appreciate your perspective 😊

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. You raise a valid point about the challenges in the current job market.
To clarify, most ATS systems are built on legacy codebases, which means they cannot effectively utilize AI for filtering resumes. Additionally, using AI or algorithms for resume screening would go against various regulations, such as those enforced by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) in the United States, which mandate fair and non-discriminatory hiring practices.
In many cases, recruiters are overwhelmed and understaffed due to layoffs. I've spoken with several hiring managers who are now screening resumes themselves because so many recruiters have been laid off. For example, OFCCP regulations state that all resumes must be screened by a human eyes in order to make a decision of moving them forward in an interview process or being rejected. Some companies also turn to agency recruiters to fill in the gaps, though this can be more costly than retaining an in-house recruitment team. I've noticed an uptick of recruiter openings which is a good sign that the job market is starting to turn.
We are in a tough job market where there is a flood of qualified candidates and as I mention in the video what's more important is when you apply not if you apply. Applying to a job early will greatly increase someone's chances of having their resume seen and not just sitting in a queue.
A very good friend of mine is at the same leveling as I am (Director of Recruiting) and he is shocked at how bad the market is. He got a referral from the CEO of an incredibly popular company (can't tell you what it is but they have a seriously cute mascot) and even that couldn't get him an interview. Yes, it's a rough market but not impossible.
I appreciate your question and the opportunity to provide some insight into these nuances.

Hey Farah, This video was super useful for me. But can you make a video on approaching recruiters through linkedin or mails. I have finished my engineering course and looking for a job. As a recruiter I think you will be the right person to answer such doubts!

Glad you liked it! TBH I would focus more on finding roles that are appropriate for you, aka New Grad roles. Recruiters get pummeled with InMails all day and you'll get lost in the shuffle. Plus, you need to apply to the jobs to be considered. As a new grad go to job fairs that your campus is hosting, there you'll find recruiters who you can talk to and you can hand them your resume. Good luck!

I guess we have all gotten oblivious to the fact that sometimes we aren't just suitable for a role or even more that there are better candidates. Everyone seems to be eager pointing out flaws in recruiters and in the process. However sometimes there is just someone better than you at this point of time. Doesn't make it indefinitely just means you need to pick up on the skill sets.
I'm a 40 year old who has decided to career transition into tech probably in the worst possible time . However I still have the belief that it is possible . All we need is that first door to open. Keep the will strong .

Why it is illegal to post jobs which doesn't exist ? Sometime companies do. I always do check if company is legit. If it is going into liquidation there will be something online or just check what is in the register about that company. Never apply without checking registry, never rent without checking registry, never buy a car without checking registry.

Thanks for your comment! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this topic. As someone who has worked as a recruiter and hiring manager for over a decade, I can definitely relate to your concerns.
First off, I want to clarify that I’ve never posted a fake job. In fact, companies that work as government contractors have to follow strict guidelines from the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), which makes it risky to post jobs that don’t exist.
You’re right that some companies use “evergreen” job postings. These are roles that they are always looking to fill, even if they aren’t hiring at that exact moment. It’s a way for them to keep a pipeline of candidates ready for when they do need to hire.
It’s unfortunate that some companies might post fake jobs to collect resumes or create a false sense of growth. That can really hurt their reputation and trust with job seekers.
For job seekers, it’s always a good idea to do your homework. Checking a company’s status, looking at the posting date, and verifying contact details can help you spot any red flags.
It’s important for all of us in the hiring space to be transparent and ethical in our practices.

Hi Farah. On the subject of background checks... I am about to graduate in a month or so. I ran up quite a bit of delinquent debt to get myself to the finish line. Are credit checks something I should be worried about?

you really need to double check the meaning of 'halo effect'

    • @Farah_Sharghi
      @Farah_Sharghi  2 місяці тому +5

The Oxford English Dictionary defines the "halo effect" as a cognitive bias where an impression created in one area influences opinion in another area. For example, the positive perception of an individual's specific trait can lead to an overall favorable judgment of that person's other unrelated characteristics.
