I just came from Glen Keane's animating videos and when I watch the passion these composers and animators have, it just really inspires me and puts me in awe. They take the most simplest things and turn it into something absolutely magical and beautiful. That's what I love about the classical Disney.
I still remember Nov 12, 1989 I saw this in the theater. I was 9, my grandmother (who is now deceased) took me and she enjoyed it as much as I did! I always fell in love with the villains, so I couldn't help but love Ursula!!! I sure miss the real Disney films.
Little Mermaid was Marc Davis' favorite character. I personally prefer Tinker Bell. Thank you for initiating this exchange of information before it is lost.
If Howard Ashman casted Olivia Newton John to voice Ariel, Howard Ashman would have casted John Travolta to voice Prince Eric, because of the relationship and the bonding that John and Olivia had since they starred together in Grease.
They should show more things like this on Disney Channel... my god is DISNEY DISNEY DISNEY channel, and the don't show anything about classic disney movies, they only show things about hanna montana, camp rock and things like that (that sucks so bad)
I wish Howard Ashman casted Olivia Newton John to voice Ariel from Disney’s The Little Mermaid because her role as Sandy from Grease and her role as Kira from Xanadu are similar to Ariel. Plus, Olivia Newton John’s voice sounds so more sweeter and smoother and able to get the Melody, rhythm, and harmony nailed whereas, when it comes to Jodi Benson’s voice, it sounded very intense, too stiff, and sings offpitch when it comes to the melody, rhythm, and harmony. Because of Olivia Newton John’s acting and singing roles that are like Ariel (like Sandy from Grease and Kira from Xanadu), she has a lot of acting and singing experience in film whenever it comes to roles like Ariel, whereas Jodi Benson was just new to acting back when she was offered the role of Ariel and she was typically an amateur. Therefore, Howard Ashman should have casted Olivia Newton John to play Ariel and make the melody, rhythm, and harmony of Part Of Your World in a Disco Pop style almost like Olivia Newton John’s Physical and Olivia Newton John’s Landslide. Therefore, it would have been appealing, lit, and awesome!
I think this was actually done to promote a November 1997 RE-release. Why then? To try and take some business away from Don Bluth's "Anastasia". I remember hearing about that! As I recall, it got pretty nasty, with Disney warning some theatre chains to not show Anastasia on too many screens, and for too many screenings, or they wouldn't show their own movies there, or something like that.
I remember that! Unfortunately, it worked. *The Little Mermaid* reissue (8-year-old movie) grossed $27 million domestically; *Anastasia* (a brand-new movie) only grossed $58 million stateside, by comparison. Frankly, I thought that was a dick move by Disney , but *Anastasia* got the last laugh when it got very favorable reviews. While that summer's "subpar" *Hercules* was seen as definitive proof that the Disney Renaissance was in serious decline, *Anastasia* was seen as a new frontier for 20th Century Fox. Unfortunately, they didn't follow it up with anything remotely good. Furthermore, *Anastasia* was nominated for two Oscars (Best Song, Best Score), just as *The Little Mermaid,* *Beauty and the Beast,* *Aladdin,* *The Lion King,* and *Pocahontas* had done. Hercules only received a Best Song nod. I remember this humiliated Disney, because Don Bluth (a former Disney animator) was infringing on their turf. LOL

1:16 Alan Menken doesn't even look at the keyboard...Amazing!!!

Technically, Little Mermaid was first released on the 17th November 1989, and Alan Menken was the composer. Howard Ashman did the words to the songs.
R i p Howard
this video was for the rerelease of the little mermaid in 1998 just prior to it's second vhs release.
