woow. I never thought this cute villager could have a potentially dark back story. I’m not getting her for my island because she doesn’t match my island’s aesthetic but she’s amazing !!
I just got shino on my island and when I went to visit her home she actually had a Hannya mask displayed right in the middle of her wall. So I think ur theory is very correct.
After a long villager hunt, I finally found her! Then this video came up as recommended as soon I got her to move in! After watching this, the search for her was 10000000000000000% more worth it
I can see that I'm not the only one who thought her face resembled a Hannya mask. That's really cool. I personally thought of her as a Kirin who is a total sweetheart usually. But fitting with the Hannya mask bit and with being a Kirin, get her mad, and "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned!" Not really that different from her canon Peppy personality, as Peppy villagers do tend to get upset rather easily. I just didn't see coming that she's actually quite a talker. XD
The reason it fits for her to be a Kirin is because, despite being so benevolent that they will float on clouds just to avoid stepping on blades of grass, a Kirin will NOT hesitate to reduce someone they think is evil to ashes! She does talk about demons in her quote, as well, so the Hannya mask bit is also fitting there. Kirins also can be thought of as deer or giraffes.
But I think that even though the Wiki says that she may tell you her whole life's story, I'm not so sure she actually would. She may be chatty, but it's highly likely that she'd keep some of the darker parts secret; after all, who would want to just talk openly about the darker parts of their personal story; at the least until such a subject comes up?
But it does fit that she would have a dark past, anyway. On top of being based on a Hannya mask, her favorite song is King K.K., which is a VERY Japanese song that has a kinda sad mood to it. And, of course, anyone who's sad would listen more to sad songs; even though matching a sad mood doesn't really tend to psychologically *help* the mood, which is why I personally prefer that people listen to inspiring music instead.
She made me think of Oni. She-Oni.. Sh-Oni.. Shino.
I think this video fits in nicely as a bridge between Halloween and the upcoming update. The October 31st birthday is the cherry on top. These masks caught my eye in game, so I appreciate learning about their cultural significance. Thanks for another interesting AC theory video. Have a happy Halloween, everyone!🎃
honestly i love the vibe shino gives and how beautiful she looks. they did an amazing job with creating the character and especially giving her a japanese touch with her outfit, and her face representing a noh! honestly im going to try my absolute best to get her on my island she is soo cool!

Very good video! I was waiting for someone to finally cover this topic about Shino, I should have guessed it would have been you! I absolutely love your other AC theory videos so I was super stoked to see this one about my new favorite girl!
I've actually heard a few other theories about her backstory, including her being a red oni, which actually seems to align with her personality a lot. Some people also think she might be inspired by a kirin. I'm inclined to believe that she was inspired by the mask like you mentioned in the video, but I thought it would be fun to share the other theories people have thought of nonetheless.
I personally think of both a Kirin and a Hannya mask, as the whole thing of anger is a common thing between them; Kirins, despite being very benevolent, will NOT hesitate to reduce someone who angers them to ashes! It's the reason why in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, the Kirins in there go Nirik when ticked off, and are associated with fire there.
Despite it being almost 2 years later, I didn't know about this character, I started back up on a secondary island and she was camping and I got her to move in 😂

FYI Genji the jock rabbit is based on Hikari Genji from the same Noh play you mentioned. So maybe Genji and Shino are ex lovers?

I have A theory about Chow the panda.
If you see pinky and Chester who are pandas they are white right?
But Chow is skin colored.
My theory is he is A cranky villager because he hates humans who came and poached him for his pelt.
There for he is An A hole to you personality because he hates humans for what they did.
This makes sense because panda poaching used to be very popular around they time the first game on the n64 came out.

I have shino as a villager
all of the villagers on my island have their own backstories, 7 out of 10 of them being real, due to them actually being inspired by japanese culture (such as genji, coco and the gyroids, chèvre and nan and benjamin being inspired by hachiko) i wanted shino anyway, however was just going to makeup a backstory for her, like i’ve done with 3 other villagers, however now this confirmed my decision to get her! as she actually has a real backstory!
seeing as i have genji on my island, inspired by the tale of genji, like you mentioned, shino would be perfect for my island!
