To be honest, I was a fan of Tyler since 2011. Somewhere along the way I kind of fell off after cherry bomb, completely overlooked Flower Boy, and when IGOR came out I only really liked earfquake (I know right).
Yet, here I am today in 2023 replaying Tyler’s Flower Boy, IGOR, (all the old albums) and CMIYGL nonstop for the past 2 months. Nonstop. I’m completely enamored with this dudes amazingly great discography. I feel so stupid for having lost interest in Tyler over the recent years, not to mention I was 2 years late into Call Me If You Get Lost. I guess what I’m trying to say is, sometimes we all need to do a bit of “living life” and gaining new experiences, new traumas, heartbreaks, new loves, just generally LIVING LIFE in order to finally come back and UNDERSTAND certain music. I absolutely love Flower Boy, absolutely love IGOR. My ears were closed to these specific albums when they initially dropped, but thanks to my experiences I’m glad I came back and gave these albums a second try. Classics, 10/10. I’m all up to date on all his music. I’m excited for what’s to come. I’m READY FOR ANYTHING HE’S GOING TO DROP.

He might be referring to the fact that he’s the only one who can help himself in this time, as he continues to drive himself deeper into the ground he sees no light of god there as there are no mirrors he can not see it in himself anymore. There is no happy only dark muck that continues to brew as these situations continue.

Flower boy was his first album he ever actually got personal. He was himself. That album more expressed feelings of loneliness and love and coming out obviously and acceptance. Igor is about obviously a toxic relationship that doesn’t sound like it lasted very long. Those are both really personal albums about himself. Obviously Tyler is known to never be taken seriously so it was a drastic change. I think all his albums before play more into characters where flower boy and Igor are still characters but they are versions of himself as the other albums weren’t really.

Yeah, this is a big part of the New Magic Wand/A Boy is a Gun pair. The narrator goes from murderous/nihilistic on New Magic Wand ("I want to be found/passenger in your car" feels like a reference to a deadly car crash, which would be fitting seeing as Tyler was in a serious crash) to pleading for his life on A Boy is a Gun. If it was just about Igor and the object of his affection it would be hard to tell who's the victim and who's the abuser, but Igor's jealousy and violence makes him out to be the darker character.

IGOR, as a project is more then just a story, let alone an album. It’s a recurring flush of emotions that all of us as humans feel in the chronological order that Tyler laid out. From the first passionate feeling of intimacy when you feel that this love interest is “making your earthquake”; to when you come to the conclusion that you are “falling in love”; to when the stress of “running out of time to make you(r love interest) love” you kicks into a high gear; to when you find yourself feeling enthusiastically jealous of anyone your love interest talks to (new magic wand). and so on so on. This video allowed me to understand this project on so many different levels so thank you😊

The video is great, but I think you missed a ver important part of New Magic Wand. Igor is convinced of closing a door (to attempt to kill their crush’s lover) to spread the message of “if I can’t have you, no one will”, and possibly considers killing him as well. The window is to hopefully being with them if they manage to do this, but they never fall through.

the way I came to this video is that I felt that all the tracks conceptually went into eachother and seemed like the bell-curve you go through from falling to someone to having to get over them, in order, and after hearing interviews with him it seemed like thats what he thought too, so I wanted to break down that arc. Thanks for watching the video, and I recommend dissect podcast if you're into this sorta thing
