    The famous Ripmo AF- this is the third season I’ll be riding my trusty old Ripmo AF, but if you’ve seen my videos lately, you’ve likely noticed that I’m almost always riding a Ripley AF. Well, that’s because it’s NEW! Ya gotta rock the new and get a good feel for it! I enjoy the Ripley AF, but figured it’d be fun to get back on my Ripmo AF again, as I’ve been ignoring it for a while due to the awesomeness that is the Rocky Mountain Altitude. Today that all changes, my first ride back on the Ripmo AF in over a few months!
    Both AF bikes mentioned in this video are available at Jenson USA via these affiliate links!

    Got my RipmoAF just before the RipleyAF came out and wondered if I'd sacrificed climbability for the extra descendability. Agree it makes the easy trails a little boring but it's boosted my confidence so much that it's opened up a whole new catalog of trails to explore.

    I agree with the Ripmo being safer.
    I went for a ride today at Skeggs near HMB in NorCal, you probably know it. And I'm always astonished with the stability ( and increased confidence ) of the Ripmo and also how close it handles and climbs to the Ripley. Still love the Ripley and it certainly has it's place.
    It would be interesting to get your take on a comparison of the two.

    • @JeffKendallWeed

    I would watch a deeper analyst on the two. I got a Ripmo AF and with all the press recently it got me wondering if maybe I should have waited. 140 would be enough for most of what I ride, but the Ripmo climbs so well I feel like I wouldn't be missing much of the advantages of a shorter travel bike.

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Ike, the Ripmo AF is awesome. As for which is better, it just depends on where you ride the most. If you have good elevation, the Ripmo is perfect. 145/160 isn't that crazy big. But if your local trails are pretty flat, the Ripley is a still a great choice.

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  3 роки тому +4

      Well perp, it all depends on the trails you ride the most. If they are pretty flat, then the Ripmo is heavier and a little harder to get off the ground. For where I live, the Ripmo gets the nod. In Sedona, it's a little more evenly split since those trails are mostly quite flat.

    • @bikingwithryan5968
      @bikingwithryan5968 3 роки тому +1

      Really depends on what you wanna do with your bike. The ripmo is gonna be a better ride with the extra travel. But if your trails are flatter and not as rough the ripely would be a better choice.

Then I changed to a progressive spring und then to an air shock. Still I find myself using all the travel without hitting big compressions or jumps to flat at 28% sag measured while seated with the saddle extended. I weight only 80 kg which is about 177 lbs. Do you encounter the same problem? Thank you and cheers

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Patrix, Ibis bikes are almost always not as progressive as I'd like, so yes, I have a volume reducer in my DPX2. It's a .8 reducer IIRC. I haven't tried a coil shock in over 10 years on an Ibis bike as I'm looking for more progressivity than a coil will ever have.

      Dimitrios, I honestly can't answer that as I haven't ridden the alloy altitude, only the carbon, but I do prefer the Altitude's suspension design over the DW link. The horst link set up is noticeable easier for me to get off the ground, and it feels more active through the rough and when pedaling/pumping. The extra travel is really nice, too. With the adjustable frame kinematics, I can make the Altitude a lot more progressive, something that I really prefer.

      @@maxbrap I don't think I would rest my decision between bikes of this caliber on a press fit BB really...i would be more worried about weight differences, but if Jeff find it easier to get air on the RM that is ~same weight @ carbon vs the Ripmo AF, bit over a lbs difference for me being ~86kg/182cm, shouldn't be an issue. If your local trails are steep and mountainous, then go Ripmo. If they are flat, go Ripley. Ripmo is more fun on the steeps, Ripley is more fun on the flats.

      Hey N, for me I like the extra travel when it comes to handling on rough trails. More travel means more traction. I think the downside of more travel would be flatter trails. Luckily we have plenty of elevation around here. But at this point I'm partial to longer travel 29- even with jumps.

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  3 роки тому +3

      Ben, I haven't been riding the Mojo 4 much lately at all. I really wish the M4 was compatible with a 150 fork, and when I get back on it, I'll be sure it has 2.6 tires on it. I'm honestly taking a break from 27.5 on anything but my hardtail, as I realy like the extra "safety net" of the 29ers right now.

    I'd love to hear more of a deep dive. Being less of a aggressive rider I almost went to with the Ripley when I moved to Bellingham. However it sounds like the Ripmo climbs as well and feels much more composed.

      Will, I prefer the Ripmo here in Bellingham, but I generally ride the steeper and rougher stuff- and my style is to pop and jump a lot. I could see liking the Ripley more for flatter terrain, but for mountains, I enjoy the extra travel, wheelbase, and suspension progression of the Ripmo.
