"Blockbuster was a physical store you went to where you could rent a movie and then had to return it on time." 😅 OMG I'm old, Blockbuster is officially ancient history.
Even though I don't use Netflix I love seeing so many men step up and be inspiring in their innovations for the next generation. These guys are so great!!!
What's very good about hook is that they tell the success stories of these great men and their struggle without those unecessary flashy and dramatic transitions you will normally see in Netflix.

Great story.. My family had a chain of video rental stores growing up in the Wash DC / MD / VA markets. We had 24 stores at one point. Many think it was Netflix that ended the video rental industry, but it was really the deals that Blockbuster landed with studios, getting them more copies of new releases at cost, whereas we were paying $80-$90 per copy. I had the idea of movie streaming in the 90's but didn't have the resources or skills to do it. Great video here about how they did it and changed the world.
And, as per usual, everyone forgets how it really started. Netflix begun as all the other illegal streaming sites. The stole their material and tried to sell it as a service without making any deals/licensing with creators or studios. Pretty much like all torrent sites do, but with a cooler and more sellable interface. Luckily they did begin to make deals with studios and creators to make it legal before they were sued. The exakt same thing that happened with Spotify. They downloaded illegal copies of music and offered them, for a fee, to users before making any deals with anyone. Two of the biggest streaming companies started as crooks but "everyone" seems to have forgotten that. Go figure.
These were the years that our children were young and we rented a lot of Blockbuster and Netflix movies. It even brought back the feeling of the paper they used for their red envelopes! I do remember liking to choose movies quicker and on the spur of the moment rather and waiting on a queued movie. The Netflix transition to streaming was a little rough and I remember being a little stressed by it. Lol But at some point it all smoothed out. It’s our country’s main choice of entertainment! I watch a lot of tiny home You Tube videos and so many times they mention that they enjoy hanging out in their cosy room and watching Netflix! It’s a house hold name and seems to be here to stay for quite some time!
o man those red envelopes bring back memories. i was a wanna be high school hacker and converting DVDs to MP4 format on CDs were my jam in those days. Netflix was a gold mine and my movie collection was huge.
Exactly same time i was trying to do online streaming rental. Wrong country, wrong partners, wrong tech. I flopped. Its not just an idea that makes it work. Heaven has to allow you to succeed.
The one thing he got wrong, probably because he's not old enough to remember this, is that while Blockbuster was a popular national chain they were not completely dominant. There were tons of Mom and Pop video rental stores in almost every town. They usually had better prices and better customer service. In my hometown the nearest Blockbuster was 20 miles away. I rarely went there unless there was a video game I wanted to rent and could not find locally
With all the money Netflix has made you would think someone would improve the user interface. It would be so much easier to select something to watch if the user could sort the database to suit their own preferences.
They’re still in debt but scaling to hopefully make it up eventually. The number itself is staggering but that’s what it costs to say yes to making so many series.
I love Netflix, its so convinient, Sometimes you want to watch a movie with your partner but not actually go out because if you do, you are límited to how you can snuggle with your partner, buuut at home no one can kick you out!
What I heard actually happened with the Blockbuster deal was that the CEO of Netflix offered form a partnership with them in the late 90's and the CEO of Blockbuster laughed in his face, lol
Love that I saw the words LazerDisk in one of the graphics my uncle introduced me to these, and I still have a few in the basement with a working reader.. Such cool old tech!
Netflix would be better if it had two sections, a section for videos you haven't watched, and a section for videos you have watched, this way it's easy to rewatch movies you've watched in the past, and easy to find new movies you haven't watched
what makes them different than other streaming sites is : putting pirated movies. almost every streaming sites does that. they can't grow due to blatantly breaking the law with pirated movies and the risk of their website taken down by the autorities. meanwhile i can't find any pirated movies in netflix. they produced their own. this can be bad decision because the one you're competing is holywood itself.
I just got a Netflix account like a year ago, had heard people talk about it for a while before then, but had no idea it was started in the late 90s. I thought it was maybe like 10 years old at most

I love how they were confused/mad when they got adult films but nobody returned them 😂💀
