Just noting that Eleanor's role wasn't all "pushing" the agenda. She was quite protective of Franklin at times and kept visitors from him at Hyde Park, etc when he was ill. Aware that she couldn't help herself from speaking to him on issues, she deliberately kept away from him when he was overtired. There's a touching bit in "No Ordinary Time" by Doris Goodwin where she's anxiously warning visitors off, staying with him at Hyde Park despite her feelings about the Big House, he's been ill.

There's a couple of thoughtful bios including Lash's Eleanor and Franklin that note that FDR enjoyed using Eleanor to bypass his staff and to let them know they did not control all access to him.

One of the reasons Frances Perkins came up with social security was when she witnessed the Triangle Shirtwaste fire on March 25, 1911 in New York.

How can Ms.Rowley possibly neglect the vast influence of John and Jackie Kennedy? To say the least they instilled a sense of glamour to The White House.JFK's "Profiles In Courage" brought American history out of the classroom and into citizen's hands. The Washington scene became an exciting sexy place to be.Mrs.Kennedy's"Tour of The White House"made it a tourist attraction, and her fashion tastes influenced an entire generation of young women. The Kennedys as a couple made fine art in all it's facets (music, painting end dance )something to be enjoyed not just by the wealthy but everyone.I think they did much more for the prestige of the office of the President both at home and abroad. No one can overlook the fact the Franklin Delano Roosevelt certainly saw America though it's most difficult and trying times with courage and confidence, but to negate the Kennedy administration and note the dubious qualities of the Obama is unjustifiable.

Rowley isn't undermining the youth and vitality brought by the Kennedys, nor their contributions to the arts. All she's saying is that many social programs, through the Alphabet Agencies and others, changed ability for Americans to have certain protections for their years of work and or service to the country. The US was deep in the throes of the Great Depression by the time Roosevelt took office. He had four terms to affect change, whereas Kennedy had merely two years and a half. Kennedy did however, save humanity from destruction during the Cuban Missile Crisis, so the Kennedy foreign and domestic policy was and is far-reaching today and his Civil and Voting Rights legislation.

The Hyde Park branch of the family was Democrat. The Oyster Bay group was Republican.

Yes, but I was under the impression that the G.I. Bill evolved from the Readjustment Act later, after WWII. But I appreciate that you can see the merit in my point, anyway.

The whole concept of the GI Bill was created by the New York State Governor, Thomas E. Dewey, a REPUBLICAN!
Dewey proposed that any and every returning veteran who was a New York State resident who was a HS graduate would automatically get a place in The New York State University system, with a stipend to live on while studying.
How this got translated into a FEDERAL law is something I don't know but it was a REPUBLICAN who thought it all up in the first place.

Without some effort at bipartisanship, nothing happens, that simple.

You're sorely mistaken; The G.I. Bill of Rights or more correctly, The Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 was signed into law BY DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT on June 22, 1944 less than two-and-a-half weeks after D-Day.
And yes, your overall point is well taken.

It's hard to do when you have both branches of government working against you and a Senate Majority Leader who explicitly, blatantly states that he'll obstruct every piece of legislation you attempt to pass.
