The last place I worked was a 60s office block with a top floor that had a roofless central area with gantries and stairs, pipes and conduits. It really looked like a Sea Devil or an Axon could come round the corner.

4:04 Being a fan of the "long read", I looked forward to the Terrance Dicks novelisation of this epic story, and was surprised at how short it turned out to be, at a little over 120 pages. Still, if you strip out all the padding, I guess that's about right.

Terrance Dicks's novelisations do tend to be a little on the lean side I find anyway. The only part he really added to flesh the story out I can remember is the part where the Doctor ponders the origins of the fascist society

In a similar vein I was surprised at how short Martin Hulke's novelisation of 'The War Games' (10 episodes) was.

Script writers have a different mindset to novelists. In novels, the author likes to draw the reader in, lure them with intrigue and curiosity. Dramatists like to get straight to the point.
Many years ago, I studied scriptwriting and we had a guest lecturer for one session. The regular lecturer wanted as big an audience as possible, so he invited the novel writing students along.
The would-be novelists spent an uncomfortable amount of time debating whether one particular word in an example the guest lecturer used was the "right" word until the regular lecturer had to step in and basically tell them to shut up, while we aspiring scriptwriters wanted to get straight to the point of "How do we make money out of this?"

I don't want to set the world on fire...
And yeah, weird how a story with blue ape men does feel very real

It is strange. It probably helps the "ape men" aren't really the focus of the story

Living here in the US I didn't get to see much of Dr. Who until the early 80's. This doctor is my favorite and Inferno is on the top of the list. Yes it could have been cut down for time, but I still like it. mmmmmm The weekend that got me started PBS did all 3rd Doctor shows. Classic Doctor Who.......i love it !

Realism can be really effective if done right. It is great when a shows good writing can make up for a lack of budget.

As far as I can recall, the only previous mention of what lay beneath the console was when Ian asked the First Doctor what would happen if the rotor fell off. The reply was that a devastating force would be unleashed. Given that the Doctor at that point was supposed to have forgotten how the TARDIS worked, we can take that with a pinch of salt.

I'm sure there have been plenty of contradictions over the years involving the operation of the TARDIS that you can have fun explaining, the "temporal grace" thing immediately springs to mind

@MidnightChimey And the constant contradictions of how the door lock works!
My solutions for inconsistencies in the classic series are, by Doctor:
      1. Gone senile, can't remember.
      2. Doesn't care, too busy.
      3. Tinkered about, changed everything.
      4. "Stop pestering me with flapdoodle"
      5. Baffled by everything.
      6. "It _is_ what I say it is"
      7. Pretend it's a mystery.
