It’s so sad because I didn’t really know about racism to this magnitude until I came to America. At 19 y/o i return home to Jamaica for my first visit and I began to cry; because that was the first time in my adult life I truly felt free. I wasn’t a Black American, I was simply just Black. I never really knew the psychological pressure I was under in America until I returned home. It hurts my soul to this day! Peace and blessings!
Yes island sis and we black Americans know this but at least your home and safe sis sorry we always warned our skin folks about this nation so they can move. And get what they need then leave out alive with less scars. Of pain
When Panamanians say there is no racism in Panama, what they mean is that it is not as pervasive as in other countries. If you are black and you want to live in a Latin country, Panama is among the few where you won't stick out like a sore thumb, especially in Panama City, Colon (pronounced Cologne), and Bocas del Toro. You will blend in with the rainbow of colors.
This video was produced 5 years ago so here is my experience in 2023. As a black man living in Panama for 4 years now I can say it definitely is MAJOR racism here. The majority of Panamanians here tolerate us but don't celebrate us.. I've walked into a room full of Panamanians and they will stare at you but won't speak or even smile. I've stepped into a elevator and spoke to a Latin women who literally ignored me but when a Latin man stepped on the elevator and spoke she spoke. This has happened on a daily basis. The government here welcomes us that's why they have a "friendly nations" Visa but they forget to tell the people of that nation to actually be friendly. So in my experience as a black man in Panama in 2023 I would give a resounding YES there is Racism, Discrimination and pure rudeness in Panama. And let me say you shouldn't have to go up in the mountains of the interior of Panama to be welcomed. I personally have been visiting Medellin Colombia where I feel far more welcomed then I've ever felt in Panama. To summarize it all Panama SUCKS. The humidity is unbearable, the people are rude, the prices for everything is going up more and more, everything is complexed and confusing, most works are lazy and their answer is NO mostly immediately when you ask for something and it's not just a language difference but more a intelligence difference. My suggestion visit but don't stay. It's developed like America in terms of physical structures but once you get boots on the ground you find it hard to even find someone with a reasonable level of intelligence. Again just this black mans experience....
yah, you would have been better off in Panama most blacks move to Panama from New York city . They live in same conditions as in New York city. but they are more adjusted and not in prison.
Objectively by nearly every single metric the USA is better, you probably just feel this way from all the fear mongering propagated by leftist politicians. Explain to me how racism is big and bad in the United States whenever blacks live much better lives in the USA.
there is racism everywhere as a dark skin panamanian man black i treat it like everything else i dont let it bother me because i love my chocolate latin n indian blood i am who i am n no one can tell me no different
Your concept is good. And, I was actually looking forward to hearing the responses. But, why aren't there any English subtitles for those places in your video, where your interviewees replied to your questions in Spanish?? I speak Spanish fluently (I've been living in Panama for over a year). But, I imagine that most of your viewers are English-speakers --- most probably people who are interested in moving to Panama, from other countries (which, I assume, was the point of this video?)
Hi Steve, thanks for your feedback! There are English subtitles, if you click on the CC button at the right hand side at the bottom of the screen. I haven-t found a way to make them pop up automatically yet...
I am black, I am from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, I have been to both US and Panama and as a black person I feel 20 times more safe in Panama than the US
I am an expat Cdn living here with my Panamanian wife and child. I have been fully accepted as a member of the society here and I find everyone much more accepting here, than where i grew up. Panamanians have opened their doors to me and said to me this is your house, you are now part of our family. What better welcome can one expect. Viva Panama
The last black lady answer was on point!! She was very accepting to Panamanian culture and went in depth in the Afro Panamanian culture! And she said that shes comfortable in Panama walking in the country and not get shot while being black in the States. The truth hurts but its true!! Black lives matter in Panama! Viva Panama!
the issue is that in u.s.a yall use to much the race card and victim hood for anything, in panama we dont care what color you are if you live in panama you are one of us thats it, remember its a small country so we all know each other and we have that small community feel of helping each other
@@robertochu5337You have to keep in mind about Black History in America as our ancestors were slaves and didn’t receive proper compensation. They were victims to White Supremacy yet became victors as they had perseverance. Know our history before you make assumptions.
Unfortunately racism exists everywhere. To say that racism does not exist in Panama is a little naive. I have never experienced personal racism against me in the US nor in Panama yet I know for a fact it is well alive. There is this saying in Panama, "adelantar la raza" which translates into advance the race. It is not uncommon for parents to push their children of color to find a mate who is lighter and/or who has strong European/Spanish features in hopes that their off-springs will come out light with straight hair. Isn't that a form of racism? Although certain areas of Panama such as Colon, Bocas, Panama City and even Darien has a strong Afro/west Indian/Spanish/indian/ mix in the people, and it appears to be well integrated, the people of darker complexion or who has strong afro/west indian features tend to be devalued and socially marginalized. Look at the current tv shows and Panamanian urban music videos. It is rare to see a black or clearly mixed women. WHY? Or the black woman in many cases is portrayed as a rakataka, bochinchosa etc. I agree that racism is not as manifested or shoved under the rug if you will in Panama, and it is not in your face but in the US there is much more outcry and activists against it. In Panama, we are less vocal about it.
Mentira! No! Yo no tengo que explicarle nada! They are God creation and that it!
Just watched this...I'm shocked! What a brilliant way to answer the topic at hand....by asking the actual people affected. As someone who's travelled to 60+ countries and have met many different culture its easy to see the great sense of respect you have for people who are different to you. Great video!
January 19, 2017 I am an American, I have been traveling to Panama for 7, years. Is there racism in Panama? Hell yes, however being that you are an American has its advantages. In Panama, if someone calls a Black person Chumbo. It depends on who you are talking to it can be offensive, are it can be a slang word for brother or sister. You will rarely find racism among the low-income people. You will experience some racism among the middle class and upper-income people. No one will harm you because of the color of your skin. You have to be extremely careful in Panama, you will get robbed depending on where you at.
Both my parents are black panamanian and my says that up there people don't talk about race they only judge you based on how your are dressed to know that you are not from there
Jaime Costa Hi Jaime, I am from Panama and I must agree with you. While there is subtle racism against black people in many ways, people who are indigenous to that land are treated with much more blatant racism, at least that is my perception.
I’ve definitely experienced blatant racism in Panama specifically in Panama City. When shopping for something at the stores, I would be followed. The cashiers even held my bills up to the light to see if it was counterfeit - putting on a spectacle for the white Panamanians to see. To make it so bad, this was done by the non white Panamanians. I went into Zara at the mall and had sales rep follow me around the store but negated to provide me with customer service. A white Panamanian manager had to assist me. When she found out that I was “American” it eased the tension that the sales reps had. What’s confusing is that they marginalize and intentionally discriminate blacks from advancing professionally, then treat them like shit - assuming that they will steal or can’t afford it. I was taken by surprise. My non-white Panamanian Uber driver advanced his car twice when I tried to get in because he didn’t think that a black person would order an Uber. I’ve heard the slick comments from the colored and non-white Panamanians. All the people suggested that I stay away from Colon (many of them who suggested were non whites). People like to bring up DR but truth be told, I didn’t experience 20% of the bs I did in DR as I did in Panama. people don’t like to admit it but the colonial hold is real! Even in the airport while wearing my hair natural, women standing behind me were talking crap about my hair. To anyone of African descent who would like to live or travel to a Spanish speaking country - in a city that embraces its Afro origins, I highly suggest you visit Cartagena, Colombia. From the hair, food, customs to the hospitality - you will feel at home.
I am black I been to Panama once spent a few weeks there, as well as a weekend in Bocas and the vast majority of people were very nice to me and my family, made alot of friends in a short space of time. That was last year July.
I'm Panamanian and YES there is recisims in Panama. many will deny it because the reality is that we was feed the ignorance of blindness the reason some may say there is none, because after all the bull we was fed in to So little know anything about they roots and were they came from, and why they are treated so different. and it be come so normal It is sad to ask a Black Panamanian about he's cultura and will say some thing like "We Spaniard descendants" so they have no clue that they black. school teach all white lecture, culture, language and brainwash them to the max, they celebrate all white tradition. not to long ago, they just start to celebrate "Etnia Negra" = Black Ethnicity. in a country were is 77% Black. you can see it on TV, there is no blacks on TV. You will hear some black Panamanians saying things like. "Man, that black guy look suspicious, we must follow him around the store" you go to a club and the racism is so blunt. that they will tell you "You cant come in" And if you ask why? they will bluntly say "We don't feel like it" and call a police and tell the police "We don't want him here". you ask the police why I cant go in? the police will say "They maintain rights of admission" you get stop by police all the time no matter how well dress you are and ask to Identify, you get search and embarrassed, But they will never admit that is because of your skin color. and since in Panama it is totally legal for police to harass black people it be come a norm. And YES, you can get kill by a police, and there will be no investigation, because panama also runs with a SUPER corrupt government and system. - were the only once that are right is the rich white people.
I travel alot and I was treated like trash at the airport. I was asked to leave an eating area and when I asked why they just stared at me angrily and no one attended to me when I wanted purchase a food item (dominos) I think. Extreme end (one of) They asked me to leave it was one of the most disrespectful things ever. I really thought it was a one off but I started to realize it was in another place. I felt very sad and angry. I have travelled many places but this was so out of the blue. Only one lady was nice to me when I went to purchase a neck cushion. It was very clear that I they were being nice to the lighter skinned ppl. I am brown and east Indian. I work in media and was tempted to do a video on it. I tried to report it and the guards avoided me... Happened twice and from what I'm seeing here Iwas not alone. Also I was told they thought I was one of indigenous ppls who apparently are treated like trash.
Play it again, but with Closed Captions on. You Tube has that feature in settings. That little gear icon. Enjoy! This video today is more relevant than ever, given the dystrumpian times the U.S.A. is experiencing as of late.
Thank you so much for this video. I am American, lived in China for 11 years, and have been considering moving to Panama. I appreciate you interviewing both black locals and expats to provide some insight. 🙏
Lived in Panama as an ex-pat for twelve years. There seems to be a lot of prejudice against native indigenous people there. Sometimes extremely intelligent indigenous people were stuck mopping floors in McDonalds and doing very lowly jobs. It made me sad. I also heard A few Panamanians make remarks about blacks, occasionally.
You would feel safer there if you were darker skinned. I as a white person often felt the people were uncomfortable around me no matter what I did to try and change that. I spoke fluent Spanish, wore local clothing, lived in lower-middle class home, ate their food. Still, often certain ones, seemed uncomfortable with me around, even tho they were polite. This is what I experienced for many years.
unfortunately there is racism everywhere. I'm from the UK however my father is indian and my mother is colombian , I personally don't care about racism because if it gets to you then the culprits have won, I will never lose to losers.
Why is it that it's ONLY Black People are interviewed as to Racism?..Why not interview the Indian in the corner, workg in the hot sun in construction? The Indian sweepers & maids, who REALLY occupy the lowest rung. Indians whose land is being STOLEN from him, by the government and outside developers. Now, THAT'S RACISM! REAL RACISM because the Indians struggle to keep their land, but are beaten down, swept aside, ignored. They're REALLY seen as NON--PERSONS.
I really, really, really appreciate this video. Thank you for both recognizing your privilege and inability to speak yourself on this topic, and for interviewing these lovely people of colour for their true opinions. Much respect for this
do you have any Idea of community like street you can see Blacks and they live . But good streets for a Young father? have a son 9months old. please your recommendition or Idea will help. I speak Spanish but not too good as i have served the militar in my Country and worked right at brazilian boader With Bolívia
As a US citizen, I have to ask...where the heck were these people living in the USA where they walked around fearing for their lives? IJS I've never felt that way before.
What is the ethnicity of the white in Panama I see they look so similar is it english, polish, Jewish, what is it. I even see it in the mixed black ppl it’s the eyes. They so beautiful and prominent in all the Panama ppl no matter the ethnicity.
Find it repulsive that a gringa takes it on herself to judge Panama like she is something special. Why do they feel they have the God given right to meddle in every other countries affairs. Panamanians dont judge or tell the gringos how to conduct their affairs back home. If you have a problem with Panama go home! Furthermore black people dont need to be validated by the benevolence of a white person. Black people have fought for their own struggle and shed their own blood to get where they are today.
Hi Hottides! The most important aspect to consider is the working permit, as foreigners are not allowed to work legally in Panama. You can get one either by finding a company that will sponsor you (usually international larger companies), or go through an immigration lawyer to get your residency first, and then your work permit (the most common one is the friendly nations visa)
Hottides depends on which field of engineering, Panamá has a list of professions that are restricted to nationals. Look into it before making the move. If you do telecommuting, you can always keep you US job and work from Panamá, the It infrastructure is very well developed.
An ex-Pat in the U.S? YOu caught the Obsession of Racism from the people there, eh? NEWSPLASH: There's Racial mixtiures of all grades in Panama. Yes, there'sracism. But then there's Tribalism in Africa. Not, Racism, but divisions, and resentments of tribe to tribe.
there is racisms everywhere you go. i dont understand the point of the video. im panamenian and hell yeah i know for a fact that there is racisms there cause my skin is very white and i dont look like im panamenian i look like im an american..i lived in alaska montana Florida new york and many other places and found racisms everywhere i went soo someone explain the point of this video
weezee_b Panaboy, I agree with you completely. I also think we must get out of the mindset that a Panamanian person has a certain look when in fact Panamanians are of all shades of skin color. I believe the purpose of this video was to shed light to people who believe that racism only exists in the US. Racism will always exist because there will always be that one ignorant person believing they are superior than another race. Until we start understanding that we are one people and our color as no significance, progress will forever be slow.
Panama is not racism Panama is a multicultural country. the people are very gentle. There are many different race. Is rare not find racism in Panama. You can come here and have a good time.
I think Panamá is a pretty segregated place. Groups are not mean to eachother, but they don’t interact much. The exceptions are maybe that the Chinese are openly racist against blacks, and the native Indians are openly racist against whites. I do feel everyone doesn’t particularly like white people here because of the history and old Spanish Cast system that existed. It’s even worse if you are also American for the same reason. But for context, I feel the racism here is much less prevelant than the United States. Recently there have been a huge migration of Venezuelans and Columbians here, so now Panamanians are much more racist against these people than anyone who is from Panama. Still, I defiantly feel much more safe here than in the US.
Click on that little icon that looks like a gear and then click on "CC" which stands for Closed Captions and watch it again. You will see them appear where you may need them. Enjoy! Also, how well this video has aged after many in the U.S.A. are increasingly experiencing such a dystrumpian experience.
This is a strange video. Most of the interviewed honestly admit not being discriminated against. That makes sense. A lot of American blacks see racism everywhere and label every action racism. Guess what, there is racism in Panama against whites too. People are people and some people don't get along with other people. Plain truth. Nobody likes to be disrespected, neither blacks nor whites, nor indigenous etc. Video is a waste of time.
It's about as segregated as the projects in Chicago. in Colon. but you get to live like you're in New York city if you live in Panama as a black person.
My Panama has changed since I was last there back in 1979. We were in the military there. So, we never directly experienced the racism be. I'm basically in my own world, so I'm impervious to all the racism.
I'm a mixed race Panamanian, black/latino, and I'd say that as long as you behave in an educated way you are very unlikely to face racism. Our main problem on discrimination-wise is classism, if you look like you are from a lower class, or live in a place that is not considered "nice enough" then you could face some discrimination.
That is wrong on so many levels. I am Black, highly educated and conduct myself as such, yet still face discrimination and racism on a constant basis here in Panama. Classism has existed since the beginning of time; however, that is not the only (nor the main) reason Blacks face racism here. Without a doubt, I can say that I have been discriminated against in Panama whether I am wearing a tie, Polo pullover, button-down shirt, or a tanktop. And I've got money. Doesn't matter. Your statement of "behaving in an educated way" further solidifies my point. Do all Panamanians behave in an educated way? You and I know that answer. I would go so far as to say Panama has some of the most unintelligent standards I've ever seen in my life. So why should "behaving in an educated way" apply strictly to Black people as far as being "very unlikely to face racism?" To counter your assessment in regard to the main problem, I would say that the main problem lies in the fact that Panamanians do not truly know nor acknowledge their Blackness, which is evident on a daily basis and manifests itself through their actions.
I'm sharing my personal experience, and all I know is that despite being black, I haven't faced racism. However, I'm not dismissing the fact that it does happen to other people. I agree that Panamanians are not the most friendly or educated people in the world, and I'm aware that behaving in an educated way will not save you from racism as my wife is blonde and she faces racism constantly. So, why would you think that it only happens to black people? I honestly don't know what you mean by people not "acknowledging their blackness" being the main problem. People shouldn't discriminate other people period. I have seen black people being discriminated against, mostly in indirect and not so evident ways, but I've also seen Caucasians, Asians, Indians, foreigners and indigenous people being discriminated, so I can only blame this on fear and ignorance, not on people not acknowledging their heritage. Do you want to know what is discrimination? Discrimination is: - A girl not winning a singing contest because she was black and a little chubby. - Local newspapers referring to the dead American girl as a "gringuita". - People speaking gibberish to mock people speaking in another language. - Panamanians complaining about how lazy the indigenous people are. This one is actually ironic because Venezuelans say that about us. - Panamanians mistreating Chinese people working on convenience stores. Don't get me wrong, behaving in an educated way is not a magic bullet to avoid being a victim of racism, but it sure helps.
again, read my comment... I'm talking about my personal experience. If it happens that I've been lucky, well, I might be lucky... I'm not saying that racism doesn't exist, In Panama I've seen black people discriminating black people and we are now facing a horrible xenophobic wave... discrimination exists, I get that. you should read more carefully before calling someone a fool just to end up looking like one yourself
This video is just plain bogus. First of all you are a European woman living in Panama you are a foreigner talking about racism and white privilege? Come on now! You know what the problem is with your introduction of the video? You are implying indirectly that Panama is a “white” country. I’ve traveled back and forth to Panama from the US and I can reassure you it’s far from that. Actually it’s a country where the majority are people of color. So what about your experience as a white person that clearly is a minority in the country. Have you been a victim of racism in Panama. Lady I see through your game. Trying to give blacks with the victim mentality a platform to promote the false notion of white privilege and white superiority, just to make you feel better. Thumbs down for this video post.
Listen.. the racism in panama isn't all about colors people, if you have tattoos or if you aren't from here you will get all kinds of racist feed back. Not so much in the city but in smaller towns like boquete etc.. panamanians just don't want you here and they are very judgemental or should I say nieve about people's appearances. This is fact, I'm in boquete right now and I go through it everyday getting followed in stores, down the street by police😢 it's ridiculous here
The problem might be more social than racial in certain situations. If it is true that let's say black people are predominant amongst the poorer classes of society, they become the most likely to steal something in stores. Not because of their colour, but because of their economical situation. And that could get reflected in the crime official statistics. Therefore, if a shop employee is naturally more vigilant towards black people, it has big chances not to be racism but simply willing to limit the chances of see some merchandises getting stolen, based on rationnal statistical evidence. I believe it is important that everyone (blacks, white, latinos) keep that crucial matter in mind in order not to become paranoid and see racism everywhere. It all comes from the intention. Nowadays I feel the segregation is getting more and more economical than racial. I hope this way of perceiving the reality will help everyone to see things as they are rationnally and lower racism everywhere. For the rest, we are all different and it is perfectly normal and instinctive to be more prudent towards people who are different than us. It can apply to origins or skin colour, but being a white bar worker I could also feel way more proximate to my black co-worker than some white people coming from a totally different background. Gotta see the whole picture and accept the reality before eventually willing to improve it. By ethics and respect values deep inside everyone of us, is how we can accept our own differences and similitudes whatever they are, and build something positive from that.
Some Panamanians like to lie and smile with you when you expose the truth saying there is no such thing and stop calling them blanco they are brown not white
Self Hatred is a very sad thing. How can you not see when there are people being mistreated. It's usually the pretend 'white' people who are the most racist. Like they have to prove that they are one of Them. Trust, real White people know other White people and They know the biggest secret of all, that we all came out of Africa.
nope. The police here are weak, they don't have guns, drive mopeds and are generally ignored instead of feared by the blacks. None of that white mall cop with roided up biceps siting in SUV blaring siren thing. More old school moped verbal harassment of blacks by skinny Latins. It's safer here for blacks. Colon 2017. They tend to be nicer to the chinese convenience store owners. I even heard a thank you from a black man to a chinese convenience store owner. Bizarre since you know Los Angeles they hate chinos.
And there are a great many Chinese in Panama. Also, racially Mixed. So, why doesn't this Ex-Pat. go interview the Chinese grocery store, laundry and restaurant owners? There are also, a great many Indians from India, and from the Middle East. From way back before the 1900s. All have been there since then.

FLI - Thank you for sharing this “profiling” episode; I am truly sorry that it spoiled your day. That said, as a frequent traveler, an important consideration is that you are not in your home country; you’re a visitor. Consequently, any predicament in which you find yourself will be significantly complicated by foreign legal norms and expectations. Regardless of the reason for being stopped, I want to impress upon you the need to think, clearly and succinctly, about how best to defuse the situation. Do not be confused, do not be angry; more importantly, do not be discouraged. Now, I wouldn’t recommend that facial expression (smile) you demonstrated here. I know it well after learning it from my sisters. As an alternative, while understandably difficult under the circumstances, is smiling and sternly/confidently stating: you are there with a group (never alone) of people visiting … they are back at the hotel … or, I am on my way to meet them … (authentic and well known ppl or places). You would be well served by getting this ‘line’ organized prior to your innocent adventures. Please capitalize on this unnerving experience and remember that as-long-as you travel, these seemingly random stops are going to happen - plan for it. I also suggest that you only carry a copy of your full passport, leaving the original in a safe place at your hotel. Being concerned about your wellbeing, I also recommend that you carry local US Embassy contact information, and not only on your phone. Be safe and keep on doing what you’re doing!
Translations would have been helpful for English speakers pero… todo mi familia es de Panamá y sí! THERE IS RACISM IN PANAMÁ AGAINST LOS NEGROS/AFRICANOS/CARIBEANOS.
Hi Fedrick, if you are of light skin then you have nothing to worry about. In this post I mentioned racism towards blacks, not the other way around =). It's rarely an issue to be white in this world. Cheers!
Oh I thought you were going to talk about racism against white people.Ms you are in denial there are a lot of places where whites are discriminated against.
t100base, well according to what my father said, when he was a kid, a teacher told used to teach the class that black people has never contributed anything to the world. My aunt was Panamanian and she didn't like people of color. You have to remember that the black population of Panama is mostly there from the building of the canal. We have not really been there for long. The actual people of Panama is an indian tribe called the Kuna. You better believe there is racism in Panama.
I love your videos but can you pppllleeessssseee use caption as we all dont understand Spanish so this was a waste of time I am sure it was interesting to hear there side.

@J OneLife Wow go fuck yourself you racist bitch

Should I visit Casco Viejo??
@J OneLife Does the white are better behave in the country you mentionned?

The humidity is unbearable, the people are rude, the prices for everything is going up more and more, everything is complexed and confusing, most works are lazy and their answer is NO mostly immediately when you ask for something and it's not just a language difference but more a intelligence difference. My suggestion visit but don't stay. It's developed like America in terms of physical structures but once you get boots on the ground you find it hard to even find someone with a reasonable level of intelligence. Again just this black mans experience....
How the black Panamanians treat you
I am black, born and lived in Panama for 21 great years, moved to USA 41 years ago , OMG what a big mistake
yah, you would have been better off in Panama most blacks move to Panama from New York city . They live in same conditions as in New York city. but they are more adjusted and not in prison.
Absolute bull crap.
Objectively by nearly every single metric the USA is better, you probably just feel this way from all the fear mongering propagated by leftist politicians. Explain to me how racism is big and bad in the United States whenever blacks live much better lives in the USA.
Yet you’re still here....What’s kept u from leaving 🤔 gtfo
@@offusyoufus4278 you complain about leftist meanwhile "rightist" are straight up killing blacks, jews, latinos...
there is racism everywhere as a dark skin panamanian man black i treat it like everything else i dont let it bother me because i love my chocolate latin n indian blood i am who i am n no one can tell me no different
panama1965 ok sooooooo I don't know what they're saying
I'm watching this two years later and while there are captions they're intermittent.
Never would have thought to hear someone say they feel safer in Panama than in the US.
@Ediberto Leal the United States is one of the most dangerous places to live if non white. Especially black!
You summed it up very well. I feel the same way, Well said,
Wow thank you for your honest opinion, it seems like black Panamanians are not as vocal or they ignore it more comparing to USA

Mentira!

I am an American, I have been traveling to Panama for 7, years. You have to be extremely careful in Panama, you will get robbed depending on where you at.
my dad is a black Panamanian
Soy Pana-American
my dad too =}
Both my parents are black panamanian and my says that up there people don't talk about race they only judge you based on how your are dressed to know that you are not from there
My dad to who lives there and born 💕💕
hi
My indigena friend said there is racism against her but it is indirect. I have heard directly from Panamanians disparaging indigenous.
Jaime Costa
Hi Jaime,
I am from Panama and I must agree with you.
Greethings from panama sorry Babe
I'm glad I found this video. Am considering visiting Panama City and like hearing from those living there.
I appreciate this video. The last person that you interviewed answered my question. Thank you very much for sharing.
I am black I been to Panama once spent a few weeks there, as well as a weekend in Bocas and the vast majority of people were very nice to me and my family, made alot of friends in a short space of time. That was last year July.
my mother is Panamanian and I've never experienced racism in Panama.
I'm Panamanian and YES there is recisims in Panama.
many will deny it because the reality is that we was feed the ignorance of blindness
the reason some may say there is none, because after all the bull we was fed in to
So little know anything about they roots and were they came from, and why they are treated so different. and it be come so normal
It is sad to ask a Black Panamanian about he's cultura and will say some thing like
"We Spaniard descendants" so they have no clue that they black. school teach all white lecture, culture, language and brainwash them to the max, they celebrate all white tradition.
not to long ago, they just start to celebrate "Etnia Negra" = Black Ethnicity.
in a country were is 77% Black. you can see it on TV, there is no blacks on TV.
You will hear some black Panamanians saying things like. "Man, that black guy look suspicious, we must follow him around the store"
you go to a club and the racism is so blunt. that they will tell you "You cant come in"
And if you ask why? they will bluntly say "We don't feel like it" and call a police and tell the police "We don't want him here".
you ask the police why I cant go in? the police will say "They maintain rights of admission"
you get stop by police all the time no matter how well dress you are and ask to Identify, you get search and embarrassed, But they will never admit that is because of your skin color.
and since in Panama it is totally legal for police to harass black people it be come a norm.
And YES, you can get kill by a police, and there will be no investigation, because panama also runs with a SUPER corrupt government and system. - were the only once that are right is the rich white people.
Atlanta Hispano wow thank you for your honest opinion
Panama lets go panama is my home
Thanks!!
I travel alot and I was treated like trash at the airport. I was asked to leave an eating area and when I asked why they just stared at me angrily and no one attended to me when I wanted purchase a food item (dominos) I think. Extreme end (one of)
They asked me to leave it was one of the most disrespectful things ever.
I don't speak Spanish unfortunately. Could you translate the responses that were in Spanish?
Play it again, but with Closed Captions on. You Tube has that feature in settings. That little gear icon. Enjoy! This video today is more relevant than ever, given the dystrumpian times the U.S.A. is experiencing as of late.
Thank you so much for this video. I am American, lived in China for 11 years, and have been considering moving to Panama. I appreciate you interviewing both black locals and expats to provide some insight. 🙏
Just came across this video and wanted to thank you for addressing the topic by having people of color speak for themselves.
This was awesome you took the time to cover this topic. Much appreciated. Can you put English captions in your vids please?
Thank you, Wendy! For translations, you just need to click the CC button at the right bottom corner of your screen
Cool thanks going to watch again!
I highly suggest people read the history of Panama.
Thank you for this!!!! Refreshing!!!
unfortunately there is racism everywhere. I'm from the UK however my father is indian and my mother is colombian , I personally don't care about racism because if it gets to you then the culprits have won, I will never lose to losers.
You should care especially with Boris just being Elected. It's all about Self-Love and dealing with everyone as your Equal.
Yes there's prejudice for gringos and negros don't think it's not.
Click on closed captions for subtitles :-)
I just want to say that your video is very respectful and informative. Thank you so much for sharing!
Greethings from panama
No English subtitles?
yes, just click CC =)
Great content. Thanks! Now I'm subscribing!
Be followed around in stores is not a racial thing in Panama it is just what is what they do. It is how they protect there merchandise.
are you still in panama?
yes I am =)
Eve Cabrera me too but will be leaving on Saturday. Let's do a video tomorrow
Eve Cabrera check out my work.
Wow! That you understood you can't answer to black experience. Such wisdom and empathy.
I live in Panamá and mostly there's no racism to black but people like you called "native Americans" yes
Are you Black?
Why is it that it's ONLY Black People are interviewed as to Racism?..Why not interview the Indian in the corner, workg in the hot sun in construction? The Indian sweepers & maids, who REALLY occupy the lowest rung. Indians whose land is being STOLEN from him, by the government and outside developers. Now, THAT'S RACISM! REAL RACISM because the Indians struggle to keep their land, but are beaten down, swept aside, ignored. They're REALLY seen as NON--PERSONS.
She said "What it's like to be Black in Panama". It's a specific video about BLACK perspective. Go find one about Indians.
too paranoiac..
I was just thinking about this while in Panama City for work
I really, really, really appreciate this video. Thank you for both recognizing your privilege and inability to speak yourself on this topic, and for interviewing these lovely people of colour for their true opinions. Much respect for this
Lots of crappy Americanisms here ; privilege (good parents) , inability to speak yourself (anal retentive), respect (no meaning)
do you have any Idea of community like street you can see Blacks and they live . But good streets for a Young father? have a son 9months old. please your recommendition or Idea will help. I speak Spanish but not too good as i have served the militar in my Country and worked right at brazilian boader With Bolívia
It's all good Fedrick, you don't need to worry. I'm sure you'll love Panama!
+Eve Cabrera ThAnks dear. but for Black people they face any sort of race issue?
Fedrick Santos
Thanks for this informative video from USA and thinking of leaving.
As a US citizen, I have to ask...where the heck were these people living in the USA where they walked around fearing for their lives? IJS I've never felt that way before.
Everywhere
Are you a black man?
Why would you have the introduction in English and the rest of the video in Spanish?
Barbara Rivera because I live in Panama and the official language is Spanish . If you press CC you’ll get the subtitles
No class wars no homeless
What is the ethnicity of the white in Panama I see they look so similar is it english, polish, Jewish, what is it. I even see it in the mixed black ppl it’s the eyes. They so beautiful and prominent in all the Panama ppl no matter the ethnicity.
Panama has a large African heritage.
Black people have fought for their own struggle and shed their own blood to get where they are today.
my dad is black and irish and my mom is from colon panama
I'm a black American man who would like to live and work in Panama. What sorts of employment are open to me? i have an Engineering PhD.
HEllo! If you click the CC button at the bottom right hand corner of your screen, subtitles will appear. Hope it helps!
We don't have a website to donate, but you can help us as soon as you arrive in Panama if you'd like =)
Hottides depends on which field of engineering, Panamá has a list of professions that are restricted to nationals. Look into it before making the move. If you do telecommuting, you can always keep you US job and work from Panamá, the It infrastructure is very well developed.
+Eve Cabrera you live in panama
I mean those two Dutch girls would have a comment.
I've been to Panama several times while I was in the Navy. For me it's all about how you act. Be courteous, and don't stick out and you'll be ok
Panama is not racism Panama is a multicultural country. the people are very gentle. There are many different race. Is rare not find racism in Panama. You can come here and have a good time.
Exactamente
@Nereida serracin your skin must not be dark for you to such an uninformed thing.
In latin ameirca theres so much rasicm and its sad .
No subtitles!
Click on that little icon that looks like a gear and then click on "CC" which stands for Closed Captions and watch it again. You will see them appear where you may need them. Enjoy! Also, how well this video has aged after many in the U.S.A. are increasingly experiencing such a dystrumpian experience.
Chinese Indian white black we al ignorant because we do discriminate against each other.
Some Panamanians doesn't like Americans
did she say white priviliege
This is a strange video. Most of the interviewed honestly admit not being discriminated against. That makes sense. A lot of American blacks see racism everywhere and label every action racism. Guess what, there is racism in Panama against whites too. People are people and some people don't get along with other people. Plain truth. Nobody likes to be disrespected, neither blacks nor whites, nor indigenous etc. Video is a waste of time.
Notice how it’s all the Americans, not the locals, as well? USA schools teach people how to constantly feel like victims.
Our main problem on discrimination-wise is classism, if you look like you are from a lower class, or live in a place that is not considered "nice enough" then you could face some discrimination.
thanks for your feedback Jahir!
Discrimination is:
- A girl not winning a singing contest because she was black and a little chubby.
You sounding like Lil Wayne right now.
again, read my comment...
Thumbs down for this video post.
most of the complains are about Bocas
Listen.. the racism in panama isn't all about colors people, if you have tattoos or if you aren't from here you will get all kinds of racist feed back. Not so much in the city but in smaller towns like boquete etc.. panamanians just don't want you here and they are very judgemental or should I say nieve about people's appearances. This is fact, I'm in boquete right now and I go through it everyday getting followed in stores, down the street by police😢 it's ridiculous here
Thanks for this video!
welcome! Thanks for watching!

Saben ustedes en Panama lo que significa INBREEDING....?
¡Sí! Eso es lo que sucede entre los seguidores de Trump.
Why would you interview people in Spanish? Let them also speak in Spanish so that your you-tubers can't understand what they were saying!
I never see racism
Nunca vi racismo
Self Hatred is a very sad thing. How can you not see when there are people being mistreated. It's usually the pretend 'white' people who are the most racist. Like they have to prove that they are one of Them. Trust, real White people know other White people and They know the biggest secret of all, that we all came out of Africa.
Nice vid. You're awesome.
Do black people receive the same negative experiences from the local police as they do in the US?
Social economics.

Thank you for sharing this “profiling” episode; I am truly sorry that it spoiled your day.

Cheers!
Brenna Cosby I speak Spanish as a second language.
Oh I thought you were going to talk about racism against white people.Ms you are in denial there are a lot of places where whites are discriminated against.
My family is from Panama. Yes racism is there

t100base, well according to what my father said, when he was a kid, a teacher told used to teach the class that black people has never contributed anything to the world. My aunt was Panamanian and she didn't like people of color.
You have to remember that the black population of Panama is mostly there from the building of the canal. We have not really been there for long. The actual people of Panama is an indian tribe called the Kuna. You better believe there is racism in Panama.
