This was my daughter's ring tone on my phone because it fit her so perfectly. She was shot and killed on Oct. 2, 2015. It only proved that the words of this song are true. She wasn't perfect, but I loved her unconditionally, and I still love her and miss her so much.

First date with a girl, Pennsylvania, 1999, this was playing on the radio in my 1989 Mercury Tracer and I mentioned how much I loved this song. I'll always remember this song because of that. I'm proud to say that girl is now my wife of almost 20 years.

Now that I've lost everything to you
You say you want to start something new
And it's breaking my heart you're leaving

But if you want to leave take good care
Hope you have a lot of nice things to wear
But then a lot of nice things turn bad out there
Oh baby baby it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh baby baby it's a wild world
I'll always remember you like a child girl
You know I've seen a lot of what the world can do
And it's breaking my heart in two
'Cause I never want to see you sad girl
    Don't be a bad girl
But if you want leave take good care
Hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad everywhere

Cat's delivery of this song takes me right back to when it first came out. I was 18 at the time and new to the ways of love. After getting dumped out of a particularly steamy relationship I was acutely aware of how much it hurt. And that made Cat's caring farewell to the one who dumped him all the more poignant.
Rather than go on about how much he was in pain, he wishes his ex well and cautions her to be aware of the dangers she will face in her search for happiness. I know this artist enough to understand his message contains no irony or cynicism. He is aware the person dumping him is making a mistake and cautions against other errors of judgment. In short, she will ultimately be worse of than he.
That song taught me to view a relationship from the other person's point of view, to better understand their needs, strengths, and weaknesses. And always, base your conduct on its effect on them. By thinking of the other person first you risk emotional vulnerability, but it is your only chance of finding true love.

    His music is timeless.
Success came quickly for 18-year-old British singer-songwriter Steven Demetre Georgiou when he began releasing singles under the name Cat Stevens in 1966. His debut single “I Love My Dog” rose to Number 28 on the UK singles chart and follow-up single “Matthew and Son” hit Number Two.
The period of 1970 to 1974 would see Cat ascend into the upper echelons of musical superstardom. His 1970 album Tea for the Tillerman, which went gold in America, contained the classics 'Wild World', 'Hard Headed Woman', 'Where Do the Children Play? ', and 'Father & Son'.
The music sounds as good today as when I was growing up 50 years ago. You cannot beat the golden age of music 1960-1980.

Now that I've lost everything to you
You say you wanna start something new
And it's breakin' my heart you're leavin'
    Baby, I'm grievin'
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you have a lot of nice things to wear
But then a lot of nice things turn bad out there
    [Chorus:]
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
I'll always remember you like a child, girl
You know I've seen a lot of what the world can do
And it's breakin' my heart in two
Because I never wanna see you a sad girl
    Don't be a bad girl
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware

I was somewhere in Texas and nothing was on the radio so I pushed play on my tape desk.. My parents made me a tape.. They said a few things and then played this song… I was so excited and so scared.. But I dried my tears and kept going.. I always wanted out of here.. I got out just to come back made my family here.. settled my roots.. Going to UCLA were some of the best sad years of my life.. I missed my friends and my family.. I missed it all.. the tiny town I grew up to hate.. and you can’t get by on a smile… Thanks for taking me back to those moments in my little Honda Civic… I still have the tape in my treasure box!

Now that I've lost everything to you
You say you wanna start something new
And it's breakin' my heart you're leavin'
Baby, I'm grieving But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you have a lot of nice things to wear
But then a lot of nice things turn bad out there.
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
I'll always remember you like a child, girl.
You know I've seen a lot of what the world can do
And it's breaking my heart in two
Because I never wanna see you a sad girl
Don't be a bad girl. But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware.
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
I'll always remember you like a child, girl, girl.
    Baby, I love you
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware.
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
I'll always remember you like a child, girl, girl
