Released as a single in late 1970, the song was Cat Stevens' first major chart hit, peaking at No. 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

IMO, he is one of the worlds most underrated songwriters, Cat penned tunes in the 60s and 70s that hang in the air for an eternity. His folksy voice has a beautiful and memorable melodic quality. The man is an undoubted genius of song and understated performance.
I went through a terrible divorce and am experiencing parental alienation from my son and my daughter. This song has a new meaning to me now. I miss my daughter so much. Thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who is experiencing alienation from their children. 💔
Same here I'm 67 my son and daughter haven't spoke to me in over 10 years. Hang in there it's tough. I have 3 grandchildren I've never met. I'll see them one day on the other side. Take care one love stay Irie.
Cat's delivery of this song takes me right back to when it first came out. I was 18 at the time and new to the ways of love. After getting dumped out of a particularly steamy relationship I was acutely aware of how much it hurt. And that made Cat's caring farewell to the one who dumped him all the more poignant. Rather than go on about how much he was in pain, he wishes his ex well and cautions her to be aware of the dangers she will face in her search for happiness. I know this artist enough to understand his message contains no irony or cynicism. He is aware the person dumping him is making a mistake and cautions against other errors of judgment. In short, she will ultimately be worse of than he. That song taught me to view a relationship from the other person's point of view, to better understand their needs, strengths, and weaknesses. And always, base your conduct on its effect on them. By thinking of the other person first you risk emotional vulnerability, but it is your only chance of finding true love.
I love this song with my whole heart ❤️ 💙 My dad hung himself a year ago & he used to sing this all the time, it was played at his funeral & I can hear him singing along, he had a great voice too 🌹🩵

Pure class. When you have real talent there isn't any need for useless distractions. Banging over the top music screaming with microphones & effin & jeffin. It looks & sounds like this.
I grew up listening to Cat. Terrific singer that made classic songs. A few years ago while standing in customer service at a Wal-Mart, I had his music playing on my phone. The cashier said in a very disapproving tone, "You know, he's Muslim!" I just said smiling, "I don't care, I love his music."
maybe the cashier more into the lil pump fucking gucci autistic gang kinda music. fuckkkk . i hate to listen to my neighbors kid playing it at loud speaker. todays kid need more discipline like we use to.

I was somewhere in Texas and nothing was on the radio so I pushed play on my tape desk.. My parents made me a tape.. They said a few things and then played this song… I was so excited and so scared.. But I dried my tears and kept going.. I always wanted out of here.. I got out just to come back made my family here.. settled my roots.. Going to UCLA were some of the best sad years of my life.. I missed my friends and my family.. I missed it all.. the tiny town I grew up to hate.. and you can’t get by on a smile… Thanks for taking me back to those moments in my little Honda Civic… I still have the tape in my treasure box!

I went through a terrible divorce and am experiencing parental alienation from my son and my daughter. This song has a new meaning to me now. I miss my daughter so much. Thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who is experiencing alienation from their children. 💔
I just broke down in tears 😭 I thought I was the only one going through this heart ache 💔❣️
@@dawnmartinez5344 I’m sorry. I basically just exist without my children. I’m sure you know that feeling. I’m sorry sorry sorry. 💔💔💔
Same here I'm 67 my son and daughter haven't spoke to me in over 10 years. Hang in there it's tough. I have 3 grandchildren I've never met. I'll see them one day on the other side. Take care one love stay Irie.
I call it family pergatory, half joking.
Pray to god and be patient. Greetings from Mauritius.
Im 53.
I've loved Cat Stevens since I first heard him when I was around 3 1/2.
Beautiful.
52. Recovering from massive surgery. We take so much for granted..... hope you're well
@@sdrizaAmen to that🙏
Cat's delivery of this song takes me right back to when it first came out.
Wow, dude! Glad you learned important lessons from the breakup. Learning is lifelong! God bless you 🙏🏻☮️👍🏻

Thank you for sharing your wisdom Sir. Your words certainly shaped my 22 year old perspective on the heartbreak I’m dealing with. Thank you!
This wow, I finally get it after 70+ years.😟 smh
I love this song with my whole heart ❤️ 💙 My dad hung himself a year ago & he used to sing this all the time, it was played at his funeral & I can hear him singing along, he had a great voice too 🌹🩵
I'm so very sorry.

Hello how are you doing..?
Beautiful song,how old are you?
2024
I love this song ❤
Hearing this for the first time in 2024. What a beautiful song; so nostalgic of the 70s.
My Dad used to sing this to me when I was a kid. I got angry because I thought it was insulting me. Now as an adult I totally get it.

Sang this song over and over again when my daughter left home at the age of 19....15 years later she's doing ok after living through the "wild world". But I'll always remember her as child.
Oh me too. I wasn't prepared.
Then all is good..
God bless your daughter and always protect her 🙏🏽
Me too!! I love this song ❤️
She always will be.
I have three grown daughters. All three smart, successful, and beautiful women, but like he says, I will always remember them like a child. Funny some of things that can bring a tear to my eye as I get older. This song is one of them.
You did good! You did really really good!
My father use to play this in he's Volkswagen I first heard it I fell in love with this song it's so beautiful and age of the times 💗💗
This song reminds me of my college years. Fifty years ago this fall this album was very popular. I remember meeting my husband in my Early AMERICAN literature class. It was the best year ever!! 😁

Whos here after Venom 3 trailer ?!
Ive been looking for the name of this song because my grandparents used to jam to it in the house while cooking
I was here before, yet I liked your comment cuz the current Venom is more badass than the Spider-Man 3 one.
Dommage pour vous😅
Pure class. When you have real talent there isn't any need for useless distractions. Banging over the top music screaming with microphones & effin & jeffin. It looks & sounds like this.
50 years later an it's still a wild world. He sure knew what he was singing about
True it's even wilder now
I grew up listening to Cat.
Shoulda punched her in the throat.
She's just ignorant!
Tom Maras LOL
papa rara words of wisdom right there brother.strong men created a civilization, weak boys will flush it down the toilet
it has been wild journey in my life since i heard this song in 1972
God he was a beautiful man!!! I just watched his set at Glastonbury and he sounds exactly the same. His voice quality is still wonderful and haunting ( and he is still a handsome man!!)
This is for my wife, Carrie,we've been together since we were teens,26yrs together,20 married.. This is MY STORY: Ahhhhhhhhhhh it's way too long & personal to leave with the lot here on youtube. I just tell you this, After coming out of a coma in 2015, the woman that was my bride for 35 years, when I called her from the hospital after they said I was fit to go home, she said: "You ain't coming to this house buddy" I was quite a mess at the time, coma's have a tendency too do that to a person the doctor said. Barely able to talk or stand up, I asked her: "Where should I go." In a way only an evil TNUC could say it, she replied, "I REALLY DON'T GIVE A F$CK" Nice eh? Then it got worse, so bad most people would have commited suicide ! THAT CAME FROM A DOCTOR I SAW ABOUT 2 YEARS LATER. What you are going through is like any terrible loss much like death. This song takes me back to my youth when i was trying to figure things out❤❤
My daughter will be leaving for college in the fall and this song came on the radio and I started crying
She was born with an inner compass to guide her in this wild world. She be alright.
I first heard this song in 1972 when I was 16 after I left home. My boyfriend played it often. Love listening to Cat Stevens still!
This man kills me softly. Certain artists should never have to make comebacks. One must be tone deaf and soulless to not treasure Cat Stevens' body of work.
This just popped into my head. 😢 Love this song.
Me too
My boy friend played this we were 16 yrs old
his voice...

I agree! Carley Simon said her song, "anticipation" was written for him while she waited for him to come to her for their first night together as a couple (if you know what I mean) 💃

But being 36 I heard this song years ago and had to hear it again
Not me. I was there when this came out. Cat was amazing back then.
There's something else on this guy's face. I can feel the voice, the round and full-cheeked face, the innocence and the subtle soul. I love you so much for May Allah, Cat/Yusuf.

I’ll never forget leaving for college.. I had a 1200 mile drive.. And all my car loaded completely up with all my stuff..
Thank you so much I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music 🎶💕
