Fluss - Kinetic Granular Synthesizer By Bram Bos and Hainbach

- It took one and half years, but now it is finally here - Fluss, my latest collaboration with Bram Bos. It is a granular playground for iOS devices - a synthesizer and a processor that is inviting to play yet can give you complex results. The kinetic interface gives you a fun and musical way to interact with it, as your gestures become the speed and depth of the modulation.
Fluss is available now in the Apple App Store: apps.apple.com...
FLUSS is here: apps.apple.com/nl/app/fluss-granular-playground/id6443472888?l=en
You're making the most amazing SW. Thank you for your hard work 👍
PS: I'd love to be able to use this on my Samsung Android tablet though 😕
so excited , and totally agree that this NEEDS to come to android, or a VST or pc version. TAKE MY MONEY!!!!
I can't wait for the Android version.
I must say its the most beautiful synth in the world.
After clicking the BUY button and having installed it on my iPad, yes, restarted that too as surprisingly requested, I am looking for any kind of instructions on how to use that app. The UI does not look very intuitive to me, please let us know where to find a description (readable text, if possible, a users' interface functions reference and such...)
Cheers from the shores of the Baltic Ocean to Berlin, wa?
Now that you have released several iPad apps, I would be really interested in seeing a video on how to approach the use of an iPad in a studio setup. The mundane stuff about connectivity, the creative side of how to think about its role alongside hardware… a lot of people look at the iPad as a toy and to think about how it can be a proper tool in the studio is something I haven’t seen a lot about. I have been experimenting with this a little and don’t feel like I have it all sorted yet.
Seconded.
I think I can do that now!
@@Hainbach AUM with DRAMBO is my favorite ipad workflow. It's almost like a groovebox type of setup, but with massive flexibility to introduce more sequencers and effects and loopers etc. The workflows are so flexible and easily adapted to whatever I need.
I bought Fluss btw. Big fan of everything Bram Bos does, I use ruismaker noir on almost everything I do. Perfect for shakers and odd-time layered beats.
iPads are great, hope to see more of it from you :)
There are vids on this already if you’re eager to get started. Check out Jakob Haq and Electronisounds, I think both have basic intros. Nutshell version is you just need a class compliant audio interface, and if your device has Lightning instead of USBC, you’ll need Apple’s Lightning USB3 connection kit. Get the one that allows you to power the iPad. USBC iPads will benefit from a hub that lets you power the device, too.
Make sure to watch Benn Jordan's video on iOS. Invaluable information.
What a beautiful creative instrument made for iPad. Thank you Hainbach and BramBos
I bought it without watching the video or reading the app description. Bram bos and hainbach, a dream team
Having now played a little with this I can honestly say this is AMAZING! Even on an iPhone 7 it’s very playable and produces gorgeous sounds. Kudos to both you and Bram!
This is awesome! It's like a kaleidoscopic mirror of sound, blending the shapes and colors with motion. Very powerful and the interface is smooth 👌
All my faves collabing together. I love it!
when you shake the devi ces it sounds like every retro video sound effect ever
Living the dream brotha! Another fun and useful tool from the Hainbach/Bram Bos team. Keep em coming. Stoked to give this a try.
Treated myself for Christmas and playing with on my iPad now, so fun!
a lovely playground indeed!
Hainbach + Bram + Anything Granular is pretty much the intersection of my Instabuy Venn Diagram. I look forward to learning about it when wake up after the Premiere because Aussie timezone :)
i really really hope it'll be available as a vst at some point, massive congrats nevertheless
I’ve just purchased this instrument and what great work you’ve done here. It’s so easy to use and intuitive from the start. Along with your other releases you’ve really opened possibilities with experimentation that I never thought of before! Well done 👍
This looks fantastic, congratulations 👏
I remember building the synth of my dreams in software almost completely at random. A few years ago, I was messing around with Audiomulch, and I built this massive, sample player, mangler, ocillator bank, etc... that had microphone inputs and virtual inputs for VST audio. And all the audio from everything could be run through a mixer, and everything could just be mangled, and mixed, and further mangled, in different ways. Then, I discovered VCV Rack. One of my favorite things to do with that program is to just, grab a LOT of synth modules at random, and then randomly connect things till the cables look like an incomprehensible mess, and see what I get. This one time, I ended up with this craziness that sounded like something Mezbow would have designed. It had all kinds of noise generators, and oscillators, strange glitch-filters, and a couple sequencers, It would create these crazy, noise/messed up, indescribable sound rythms that I can't even begin to describe. It sounded like Merzbowwith a bunch of circuit bent radios. I connected the audio from that to my Audiomulch creation, and the two were a pair made in heaven. I could do whole improvised performances with this setup. And no two performances were alike, because everything was so random and insane that came out of it. There was NO duplicating anything with it. Everything was unique that came out of it. Sadly, VCV rack underwent an update, and a good quarter of the modules I used to make that part of it weren't updated, and weren't compatible with the new version. And then my hard drive fried out of nowhere, so I completely lost the files that I had. I still have the Audiomulch setup, but sadly, the VCV rack setup is long gone. And I've never found anything, or any combination of current modules that at all come close to what that older setup had done. But man. That setup was a ride when I was working with it.
This is phenomenal. For the first time I've seen something that really excites me about using my own samples. I have a lot of modular stuff, but this would be unwieldy in hardware. Beautiful interface. On another note, I'm curious about the stand/mount you're using for your iPad in your studio. What is it?
That is a Rode mic boom and a small rig tablet holder
Looks (and Sounds 😊) really amazing
@Heinbach - Absolutely amazing, thank you for creating this!
Great. Very interesting app and very inspiring. Thanks for the work and for the video to be able to go deeper into it.
Lovely, reminds me of Hourglass, or Cosmosf. Just needs some Iannix integration, right? I still sometimes use Tuareg 2 for loop design BTW ;)
Easiest buy decision ever ❤
Just lovely! My wallet thought it was safe to go back in my pocket after BF, but I'm not missing this one! :)
While not fracturing and remaking the boundaries of what can be considered “music” (loaded term), this app nevertheless pushes gently but firmly at the restrictions often imposed on The Art Of Noise (not the band). One can never have too many granular playgrounds, and this further opens up the possibilities of combining an iOS app with hardware (1010’s Lemondrop, say, or a harp) and modular. What interesting times we live in…
Thank you for this fantastic sound lab. I’m in love st first sight and enjoy creating soundscapes 🤩
This looks great!!!!
I would love to see a video about how you integrate your iPad into the rest of your hardware. I have found it to be Extremely frustrating. Are you using an interface or are you able to go in and out of your iPad using just the USB-C / weird apple port?
I use the Apple Media adapter with usb, charging and HDMI, together with an Audient EVO 4. I also have a Babyface Pro, which is pure bliss with the iPad. Check Jakob Haq, he is a guide through all of this.
@@Hainbach Thanks! I'll check this stuff out!
Wish there was MIDI mapping OOTB. I can make it work with another host to MIDI map, but it would have been nice to have it built in as part of standalone mode.
Great video! I think you convinced me to buy it. Is there some way to limit kinetic movement on the left pad? If not that would seem to be a nice feature for constraining the filter sweep and panning. Bravo to you and Bram for creating an instrument that utilizes the iPad touch interface in a new and creative way.
This is beautiful! Unfortunately Black Friday closed z ol open $ register. I did however get Dials, and speaking of granular Silo. Like many I miss the mind-bending granular app Mangle. Fluss apparently has great musicality, and I can’t wait to get it. Next paycheck!!!! Quick q. How many instance of Fluss can one open in Aum?
Love granular synths.
Love your work
Love bram bos.
Gratz
Instant purchase.
Cheers
What a great app and , yes, such a nice crossover collab with Emily
Though I was happy enough with spacecraft but this has something different going on, sold 👍
Can I use with OP-1?
Pure Lush Excellence, thank you BRAM BOS & HAINBACH , Superb, my first experiment will be to run GAUSS through it.
Will there be a VST Version? Sounds awesome!
Very cool... purchased! Love your apps and effects Hainbach. Just love the creative user aspects and of course the musique concert sounds I can get. I do wish the app had a play or engage button so if I am working in a DAW I can trigger the start of this effect on a beat I need. Xenakis! Yes!!
Love this! Bought it immediately. Just a couple questions. Any chance of tempo sync? How about the ability to preview/play the actual full sample? Use audio formats other than wav? Thanks in advance! Now, back to making noise. ❤❤❤
Tempo sync in away with an external LFOH, the parameters are exposed in AUM. See Gavinskis video, he mentioned it to the end if I remember right.
Is shimmer a separate reverb unit, or part of the granular engine?
It Feedbacks through the engine
@@Hainbach How does that work if its playing a sample, is there additional delay?
Looks beautiful, definitely looks like something I'd see Wobbly (from Negativland) play in a live show.
Herr Hainbach. Good to have you back. I'm enjoying your FLUSS to no end. I wish to use it in my Pro Tools. Would you know if I would require a "wrapper" to use FLUSS as a MIDI instrument as FLUSS is an AU3 plug-in? It would be great if I could "play" FLUSS on a MIDI Controller for even more musical possibilities. Thank you and be well.
Hi! Fluss is iOS only for now, so no wrapper available. But you can play it with MIDI on iOS in any host, all parameters are open
@@Hainbach Thank you for your quick reply. Rewatched your FLUSS video and downloaded AUM. Looking forward to using them. Thanks for all your excellent work.
Great App. But no Midi Mapping for the Record Button in AUM is a shame. Update ?
passed it on - you can always contact Bram direct on ruismaker.com.
Still having fun with the Noisetoys tape looper while I wait for Hainbach to release new stuff for android. Any year now...
I love this app, but I wish the red and green were different because I'm partially colorblind and it's very difficult to tell them apart.
But we made it color-blind friendly a week after release. Have you updated it since then?
And what about Android users ?:(
Isn't Bram Bos an old school software maker? I remember the name from somewhere, maybe Hammerhead?
Exactly, one of the very first!
You should of made this a vst plugin as well, kinda limited not being able to use in your daw
There are various DAWs/plugin hosts on iOS which can load Fluss as an AUv3 plugin 😊
Excellent excellent
Looks great! In a future update could the ‘quantization' window be more integrated and not a separate popup? I can imagine it would be fun to play the scales and other elements at the same time, without having to toggle back and forth between the main screen and the popup window.
Very interesting tool. Question : Does it work well with an iPad 7 , or does it need more power to be efficient ?
iPad 7 should be powerful enough. I've had it running on an ancient iPad Air 2 from 2014 (although I would recommend something faster than that ;-).
@@brambos9370 Thank you for your quick answer. Awesome software. I worked in computer software all my career and i can regnonize top level solutions. Congrats.
I'm ready in five. Let's get this show on the road.
Just bought an iPad and this is the thing I've been looking for!! insta buy
Hi could you make you field looper have more recording time say 5 mins .thanks
Instant purchase. Thank you!
Superb app! Just bought it straight away. I need to learn how to use it sparingly though :) Let it rip and it sounds huge!!
Totally OT, but last night i dreamed that you were one of my best friends and gave me relationship advices in the way you explain stuff on your vidéos
Ich habe auch noch mein gutes altes Reaktor Ensemble. Es kommt immer auf die Samples drauf an. Unfortunately I do not do IOS :-)
Sounds amazing!
Can i use Fluss on Garage Band or need some PRo daw like Cubasis or Nano? Thx
Garage Band works
@@Hainbach Thx maestro! Will try it!
Hi! I ve Just purchased the app! But how it works for live recording? Dindt found any rec button or sync with iPad mic?
Also how to set the tempo to make the speed be in sync with other gear? There is no menu or any others functions or settings?????
Do watch the video in full, it is explained in detail-You open it in a plugin host. There is no sync, as all modulation is defined by your touch. You are the modulation, as I say in the beginning. If you want external modulation that can be timed, all parameters are laid open in the host.
@@Hainbach great! I m new in iPad...after i ve written this post i ve reviewed the video and i realized that i need AUM! Sorry for the beginner questions...amazing app!
why in Poland it costs almost 2x USA price?
US price has no VAT.
hi. i've been trying to use fluss recorder hosted in studiomux on an ipad running ios 15.7.1 and i can't expand the window to reveal the bottom half of the ui where the grain level controls and the xy pads are. anybody got any tips, or is it just not compatible with studiomux? i've tried double tapping on the top window border, but nothing happens and the top window border only shows "presets" and "close". beautiful app though!
Open a ticket here: ruismaker.com
@@Hainbach will do. thank you!
Awesome!
congrats!
Hi Haimbach. Please how to make a minor note into "quantization". For example on custom scale "major" a A minor. Thanks for this app!!
I am not sure what you are trying to do, but you can make a scale by turning the notes on and off in the quantiser
@@Hainbach Hi!
I need to do, for example, a La-m (Am), is that possible?
yes of course. Just set a minor scale and transpose.
You can turn off the shake to randomize? It would be terrible to accidentally bump into or knock over your iPad and lose your settings.
So far I have not experienced that - it is a real up and down shake required.
YOU HAD ME AT SCALA IMPORT
Gekauft!
Danke, für das schöne Instrument…
Sounds and looks absolutely beautiful!
Maybe I missed it, but does it respond to incoming midi clock for syncing the 'movements' in the app (LFOs, scanning speed etc.) with a sequencer and other instruments?
The LFO is you, so not in the standalone. But you can automate and modulate every parameter if you use the plugin.
@@Hainbach Hahahahahaha.
Thanks, I get it.
Unfortunately, I don't respond very tightly to an incoming masterclock 🤪
Plus, I would have to add a DIN port to my brain......
So to avoid that, the question remains is : Do you feel there is value in an option to sync these automations (like the values moving up and down as you show) and grain 'seeding' to a clock?
So they keep in time with the tempo of a track?
Not something you 'always' want, but in a bigger setup I feel this could give the output a bit more rhythmical sense.
Maybe I'm seeing this totally wrong and it is 'not' supposed to combine with other instruments and rhythmic stuff. I'm not very experienced with granular, apart from some great Reason Grain experimentations.
If there is value in it is entirely up to you. All the options are there if you open it as a plugin. A clockable MIDI LFO should be all you need.
@@Hainbach
Get it.
Do you think it would be useful?
I'm not yet used to integrating granular stuff in my DAWLess setup. (tried once, but failed on my part)
Sounds nice. It’s like a more technical Electro Plankton
Amazing
Is it a Very demanding app ? Asking before buying, I fear my old Ipad air wouldn't handle it
It looks great
the app description recommend Ipad Air 2 or higher, sad
Please consider a dark mode. Its not a artistic thing but I like to play music in dark environment and bright app interfaces emmit too much light
Already done in the latest update.
As cool as this is, I don't own an iPad, or iPhone, nor do I have the money to get one. I'd love a version of Fluss that's a VST plugin honestly
Oh nice!
I just downloaded fluss. Interesting sounds and fun to use. The looks could be better though. Bram bros‘ UI design is not so appealing to me. Is there a way to record directly into the standalone app? I can load a wave file but don’t see a record function, except via AUM.
Errmahguuurd. So good.
Song at 0:00?
It is my Patreon, look for featuring Emily Hopkis
Sold 🙌
What's the dongle you are using with your iPad? Thanks.
Camera connection kit so I can use an Audient EVO 4 audio interface and charge at the same time
Sorry: Apple USB-C-Digital-AV-Multiport
Killer App, that icon needs some love though
will there be some midi implementation?
You can map all parameters if you use a host.
@@Hainbach thx for your reply.. I did not find a way to use an external keyboard to play notes....
@@oliver-dp2yo not what this is made for. But go to the Audiobus forum, people have already hacked it
@@Hainbach thanks for the hint. :)
Same Samplr
No it is not like Samplr.
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY LUNCH MONEYS ALREADY 💛
Congratulations on another plugin release (this time with Bram Bos)!🎉. Only doing a small amount of iOS music making, and would love to see this as a VST.
It is my dream granuler synth Please make VST for win and Mac
@@minim8spro710 the whole point of fluss is to play it like an instrument - with your hands...so you won´t have the same joy using it with a mouse and/or a midi controller
I bought it straight away at midnight PST, and probably dropped the first app store review! haha. Lovely, lovely stuff, Herr Hainbach. ♥️Bram Bos.
This sounds better than any other granular synth I’ve heard. I’d pay $200 for this if it were a VST. Anyone know of a VST that can get similar results? I can’t seem to get that precise glitchy, hazy sound with Portal or any of the others I’ve used.
Ok, I'm not sure what it is exactly but i know for sure that i want that as a VST (or even better as a CLAP) plugin !
Oh yes please!
I've seen granular sound maker apps before on iOS and they are brilliant and creative. This one is absolutely unique because of it's playfulness, and I want to fully unlock it's potential someday (by using it as a e-guitar pedal). Until then, I'd like to figure out how to combine it with Gauss and create sounds unheard of. Thanks for the tools for artists.
I really like it, any windows releases in mind for the future? Maybe a vst for all the ones like me without an iPad or any touch interface?
I installed Fluss this morning and took it with me to band rehearsal. I just let it run and brought various presets up between songs, and the rest of the guys loved it. I look forward to pushing what it can do as time allows, but as a start I'm more than happy to run a beat behind Fluss and let the audience hear it between tunes. Some of the sounds have been quite soothing to have in the background while I work, as well. It took less than 24 hours to become my favorite iOS synth.
If Emily is involved, I'm super in!
Sounds awesome! Would love to have this as a VST on PC though. Unfortunately I don't own an iPad.
I was already very excited at the beginning of the video but as soon as you unveiled the live recording feature, it was an instant buy for me. I'll definitely be using it in my ambient live-looping improvisations. Thank you for this great app !
You should check Silo by Unfiltered Audio too, less hands on but way deeper customisation of grain generation, spacialization and reverb.
@@Atticusmeh I have Silo and love it. But it's a processor and it has too many settings to be tinkered with live. What's great about Fluss is that it's a live sampler/looper, and it has the right amount of settings for a live/improv situation.
Oh man I never knew about Xenakis and I want to thank you for turning me onto his story. I am Greek American but very far from my roots. I never knew about him and now I am going to go research him. I am so inspired by Dreadbox and anything else that comes from Greece that feels modern because I’m so tired of only hearing about the Parthenon and Gyros when it comes to my ancestry. Great stuff. Listening to his music now!
You have no idea how happy that makes me to hear.
Bram are the best auv developer in the store so I’m really hyped about this one 😍
This seems great, very inspiring. Can't wait to get it.
Finally a granular app that is as playable as Samplr👌🤘 simple to use, yet also deep in terms of sonic possibilities👏i love it... AND it's great on iphone too
This was an instance go for me! Two of my favorites teaming up = success!! And so it is!
Such an amazing inspiration and tool.
Downloaded the new app this morning! Got to sit and make some sounds with it for a while and it is very inspiring! Whether or not it can dethrone Borderlands as my go-to granular processor remains to be seen, but so far I like it a lot! Another fantastic sounding, fun, and inspiring app from Hainbach!
This definitely looks like a must buy for iOS iPadOS devices!
On my wish list, will have a look into it.
Great work!
