Good old days. I remember bringing the dvd every time i went on holiday. I'd watch it at least twice. And now we're getting the 2nd movie. This is gonna be great
And also knowing when to stop. A creature that big could get seriously wounded by the rocks at the bottom of waterfall, and so it didn’t chase Jake there.
My favorite thing about this movie is the attention to the ecosystem. This one scene shows some of the more interesting interactions; -side note: I love the way they use the shrinking spiral plants to reveal the rhino thing. That was SUCH a surprising moment for me. -the rhino has very in-depth instincts; it likes to bash its head against things which is very destructive, and unlike a rhino if you charge at the same time as it the animal will stop. -it's also a herd animal -then the panther thing comes out and the standoff he and the rhino bois have is very fascinating to me. it felt refreshing and very natural to see the panther not immediately focus on jake. -both species seem built for strength, which actually makes sense because the forest is dense and the rhinos need to be able to clear paths, the panther also needs to be able to tear up surroundings which its prey may try to use - exactly what we see in the chase. -and no, its not much and they didn't show every tiny detail of any of these animals but it sure af beats a lot of other movies focused more heavily on the humans struggle than the animals they're fighting. -and also, side note 2: the zebra bois aren't very strong because 1. they arent predators, and 2. their form of defense is fucking bouncing. therefore they're very thin and agile.
@@Vibin_jellies I'm so confused. What am I doing that you don't like and how does it relate to your hatred of the movie? What don't you like about the world?

Thanator has to be the coolest animal in the avatar movie It’s got the appearance of a Alien Big cat It’s jet black allowing it to camouflage with the jungle shadows And it’s like the apex of the land
The apex would be the avatar actually since they are capable of taming the largest predator which is the great leonoptryx it would also technically be the apex predator
What's funny is that the Thanator's name (as well as Thanos') were based off of Thanatos, the greek god of non-violent death, and both of them are pretty violent lol
I love how the Thanator doesn’t mindlessly roar the whole time it chases Sully around. Only when it’s irritated does it ever turn vocal, but hunting it stays mostly quiet and focused. Too many movie monsters always have to be vocal when chasing people, and it makes no sense as to why they do so. Carnivores keep their mouths shut when hunting or chasing their prey, so this was so refreshing to see at the time it came out.

Some details that keep me fascinated is the Avatar body is as large as the Na'vi which makes it 3 meters in height. From Na'vi and Avatar user point of view the Thanator is already quiet big, maybe like an adult bear compared to a human. But if a human compared to a Thanator without an Avatar body, that thing is very huge. Probably bigger than african elephant from our point of view. That's cool and terrifying at the same time.
It’s suddenly occurs to me the deeper sub context of the avatar movie, the final battle is fought not just between the natives and humans, but between the entire planet as a sentient awareness, the natives were not even fully aware of how deeply they could bond with their own environment, until they started bonding with those predators that they had been most vulnerable to. This is the metaphor to show us that all beings must reconnect with the planet to live well.
they bound with Ikrans who are like very, very big raptors. Not to mention Toruk who is far bigger. It's safe to assume they just never had the occasion to bound with a Thanator, they seems quite ferocious.
@@efaristi9737 Toruk had not been bound with until Jake Sully, that was how he earned his name. The Akrons may be like raptors, but if everything else is like a T Rex, my general assumption stands that the sub context of the movie is to show that everyone must re-bond with their environment to make peace, even those of us who think we already are bound can do more.
@@NotoriousBroadcasts there has been Toruk Makto before Jake sully, he isn't the first one. But it's sure this isn't the kind of animals N'avis usually bound with. That's a valid interpretation.

@@efaristi9737 This may not be canon at all but in the Wii version of the Avatar video game, the Na'vi protagonist rides a Thanator. It's not specified whether he bonds with him or not, but the creature respects him because his tribe's symbol was a Thanator or something along those lines. I wonder if we'll see some of that in the sequels.
Which really goes against the general recommendation when encountering a predator: "never run from a predator". Running totally triggers the hunting instinct.
with how the thanator's only real options in this scene are to either hunt the hammerheads (which have already gone on the defensive), or go after relatively small but potentially worthwhile game (a singular na'vi with a gun), unless you take into account that Jake might not be worth much effort, this definitely tracks well as a good way to set up a confrontation with a predator while making it seem like an animal, if you consider that the thanator might be in some state of desperation that is

Then filming the underwater portion of this scene just goes to show how top tier this movie is.
My favorite thing about this movie is the attention to the ecosystem. This one scene shows some of the more interesting interactions;
-side note: I love the way they use the shrinking spiral plants to reveal the rhino thing. That was SUCH a surprising moment for me.
-the rhino has very in-depth instincts; it likes to bash its head against things which is very destructive, and unlike a rhino if you charge at the same time as it the animal will stop.
-it's also a herd animal
-then the panther thing comes out and the standoff he and the rhino bois have is very fascinating to me. it felt refreshing and very natural to see the panther not immediately focus on jake.
You are the reason I hate this movie, from the moment they touched that neon fest crap of a planet I hated it
@@Vibin_jellies I'm so confused. What am I doing that you don't like and how does it relate to your hatred of the movie? What don't you like about the world?
I agree the world building is on fuckin point. Btw the rhinos are named Hammerhead Titanothere and the panther is named a Thanator. And both are given scientific names in canon lore. Also the gazelles and named Hexapedes, but idk if they were given a scientific name.

Thanator has to be the coolest animal in the avatar movie
It’s got the appearance of a Alien Big cat
It’s jet black allowing it to camouflage with the jungle shadows
And it’s like the apex of the land
The apex would be the avatar actually since they are capable of taming the largest predator which is the great leonoptryx it would also technically be the apex predator

When Sigourney Weaver tells you to run, you fucking run
I love how the Thanator doesn’t mindlessly roar the whole time it chases Sully around. Only when it’s irritated does it ever turn vocal, but hunting it stays mostly quiet and focused.
Too many movie monsters always have to be vocal when chasing people, and it makes no sense as to why they do so. Carnivores keep their mouths shut when hunting or chasing their prey, so this was so refreshing to see at the time it came out.
I watched this movie and the scene so many times but I really never get scared of this(Thanator). But when I watched it in 3D yesterday, i was literally scared of its fearsome look , the roar and it's aggression..... Really terrific in 3D..

2:12 I love the roar and the chase
Best movie ever!!! Truly amazing
"Don't run he doesn't bite"
Some details that keep me fascinated is the Avatar body is as large as the Na'vi which makes it 3 meters in height. From Na'vi and Avatar user point of view the Thanator is already quiet big, maybe like an adult bear compared to a human. But if a human compared to a Thanator without an Avatar body, that thing is very huge. Probably bigger than african elephant from our point of view. That's cool and terrifying at the same time.

I find this part a little funny because while Jake was talking trash, that thing crept right behind him.
yeah im pretty sure thats the point
That's the joke
WOW you are right,

@@efaristi9737 you are correct, I had forgotten the details that he was bonding with Toruk to become the legend. I’m definitely going to start investigating and discussing those deeper sub themes though because I think we all might’ve missed something important here.
I love how easily Weaver sells APEX PREDATOR with one line. "RUN! Definitely run!!"
No surprising, since she's made a career fighting Xenomorphs
Which really goes against the general recommendation when encountering a predator: "never run from a predator". Running totally triggers the hunting instinct.
with how the thanator's only real options in this scene are to either hunt the hammerheads (which have already gone on the defensive), or go after relatively small but potentially worthwhile game (a singular na'vi with a gun), unless you take into account that Jake might not be worth much effort, this definitely tracks well as a good way to set up a confrontation with a predator while making it seem like an animal, if you consider that the thanator might be in some state of desperation that is
They won't go up against something so tough like the hammerhead if they're not desperate
