Octopi aren’t stupid. It knew it couldn’t eat the bear as soon as it touched it. It wasn’t attempting to eat it, it was more or less just exploring it and trying to figure out what it is.
I think they would've been able to figure that out pretty quickly , probbly let go when it felt like it got a good enough feel for it or realized it wouldn't be able to figure out what it is/what it's for

Actually octopi collect trash and stones etc. to build their houses. Sometimes they even build a little yard too .. usually a hoop or square built around their "cave" :) they are true collectors!

They know what they are supposed to mate with, and typically do displays of some sort so that the female won't eat them before the male can rip off one of his own limbs for her to eat and mate with like some demented sex toy, so attempting to mate with the teddy bear is out of the question because they aren't sexually attracted to anything remotely mammalian. Most likely, it was just using its great curiosity to examine the bear. Could have been for food, but they have more reasons than that. Sometimes, they are known to play with human toys and technology, perhaps it wanted to see of the bear could do anything sense it came from the creatures that give it various playthings. Perhaps at first like Curty said, but the octopus was also curious. The bear is a bright color and to an octopus that's very attractive. Octopuses are extremely intelligent and just as curious. They can tell from food or a foreign object. It likely did bite the bear, but unlike a crab or flesh, the texture is different. This is why we don't see the bear torn apart. After it knows the bear isn't food, it's still very curious about it "What is this? It's soft, bright, it's in my area... Doesn't taste like food. What is this!?" So, while it may not LOVE the bear. It's really interesting.
Octopi typically use their tentacles to obtain information, so that first bit of it hugging the bear over and over is it trying to figure out what the heck it is. Then it probably gave it a taste test.

yes. seabirds especially eat a lot of plastics and when they die, most likely because they are unable to digest it, you can see the literal handfuls of trash in their stomachs. i can give you links to photos and articles if you would like me to.
Octopi have their taste buds on their tentacles, so they can tell when something is food or trash before they eat it. Its true that seabirds and turtles will mistake trash for food, but I doubt an octopus would.
