@philwheal19. Of course he can put marillion on his list and not ELP, because marillion has a lot of incredible music that a lot of the people that refuse has never heard. Another thing i disagree in your comment is considering close to the edge far better than fragile. The thing is that both are fantastic, very difficult to choose one over the other, because CTTE has 3 "9.5" or "10" songs, but fragile has (from best to worse): heart of the sunrise, roundabout, long distance round around, south side of the sky, the fish... why do you point out about the mini indívidual songs? Who cares about that?
#4 and #5 are probably my #1 and #2. Cannot argue with Dark Side of the Moon. Court of the Crimson King only because of Greg Lake and Peter Sinfield and that fabulous jacket. Can't believe I sold that album. Islands is also interesting. Foxtrot is hard to leave out with Supper's Ready, maybe the most extraordinary 20+ minute composition of the era.
I enjoy all these top 10 or top whatever list videos. And even though everybody's personal list is going to very a little bit they are all good list and entertaining.
Great to see Camel in there - my all time favourite band still going with their newest member really raising their game. Who is he? Peter Jones. Check out his prog album Tiger Moth Tales - Cocoon. A fresh new take on prog.
It’s a beautiful album but it lacks originality and brings no innovation. So it can’t be the best album of such genre. It may be your favourite, of course!
@@Andrey_Yurkoff Really? It's a concept album which tells a story with no words, just music. That's innovation. The only other example I can think of is Peter and the Wolf. And it's highly original. And progressive music does not necessarily have to innovate: the term originally referred to music that was not the classic 3 minute single, but more extended and with much higher levels of musicianship.
Nice list. My top 10, some differences: Stomu Yamashta - Go UK - UK Focus - Moving Waves ELP - Brain Salad Surgery Yes - Close to the Edge Genesis - A Trick of the Tail Zappa - Apostrophe ITCOTCK - Crimson Tull - Aqualung Floyd - DSOTM
The inclusion of Rush, Steven Wilson and Marillion, while ignoring ELP makes this list suspect, IMO. Although, I do agree with “Court” at #1. I would have also included KC’s “Red”. Incredible LP in its own right. But, everyone has their own opinion. Thanks for the list.
Such a brave attempt. I compiled a top twenty list some years ago and within weeks substantially changed it, it all depends on my mood and what I have been listening to. I totally agree with your choice of In the Court of the Crimson King as the top choice. Mirage by Camel is also a personal choice and I remember buying Days of Future Past very high on my list although oddly I disliked other Moody Blues albums. Some great choices from others here such as Foxtrot. My own list is littered with Arena and Pendragon albums. Be great to see what we all think are essential Prog Albums without ranking them.
An interesting list . I think that ELP's Tarkus , or Brain Salad Surgery , belong on this list . Also , I would replace Days of Future Passed with On the Threshold of a Dream . Cheers !
Genesis Yes Camel ELP Gentle Giant Kayak FM Steve Hillage Jethro Tull PFM I can't do albums, or songs - just too much greatness, and much of it from the same bands. This list is based on my faves, then & now, and those who had the greatest influence on my music. I don't include KC or VdGG, or PF simply because I never cared much for them (and ADORED the bands I enjoyed). Also, not all eras of these bands qualify as "prog", but those eras that did were outstanding in my mind (like Kayak's Royal Bed Bouncer). Honorable mention to: Flash, Nektar, Pulsar, Gong, Kansas, Renaissance, Moody Blues, Jean Michel Jarre.
@@TopTenTunes Yes, such a fine era of music! I just hope everyone can hear some of the lesser-known bands like Camel, early Kayak, PFM, and FM, etc. Because I hate to imagine a world where I didn't have that music in my life. And then same comes back to me as now I want to hear more of bands I never heard much of, like Marillion, Opeth, Flower Kings, etc. I haven't even heard much of the meeting of Ton Schlerpenzeel (keyboards with Kayak) working with Camel (supergroup alert)! So much great music, so little time! But some day...
Roger Dean designed Uriah Heep's Demons and Wizards, and Magicians Birthday. Not just stunning art work, but two very, very good progressive rock albums of our time.
@@wamgoc have you even listened to Pink Floyd? Animals, the wall and wish you were here were definitely prog rock. Early Pink Floyd up to dsotm was psychedelic rock, and after that they were prog rock
How would you even dare compare and try to rate these albums? To call one better than the other??? REALLY??? It was a nice try. There are arguably dozens of great Prog rock albums!!! I’m just so glad I grew up with the genre. Prog Rock is such an awesome contribution to the world of art!!!
Agree with with King crimson being number one but I would put either foxtrot, nursery crime, selling England by the pound, or lamb lies down on Broadway second, and either close to the edge or tales of topographic oceans third. At least you didn't put Supertramp in there like some other guy did

Steve Hackett - Voyage Of The Acolyte 9. ELP - Pictures At An Exhibition 10. Jon & Vangelis - Private Collection
glad to see a RUSH album on the list but . . . Farewell to Kings Hemispheres . . . both serve the prog rock milleu better imho and the list can't be complete (again, imho) without an ELP album so, either Tarkus or Brain Salad Surgery at least deserve an "honorable mention"
@@timothysoar1321 not sure I understand your comment - are you saying RUSH is a Space Rock band and doesn't belong on a Prog Rock list? Or are you saying Prog Rock = Space Rock and RUSH doesn't belong either way because they are Prog Metal? imho, Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres are the very definition of Prog Rock and both albums feature multiple elements of the genre - Space Rock = bands like Hawkwind, even some Pink Floyd qualifies imho - I wouldn't call anything RUSH has done Space Rock

Junipher Greene - Friendship not mentioned? Rick Wakeman - The Red Planet, Genesis - From Genesis to Revelation? You can pick anything by Camel, Van der Graaf, and Jethro Tull, or any of the Genesis prog albums and it will most likely fit high on any list.
I miss some albums: Van der Graaf Generator - Godbluff Gentle Giants - Glashouse Genesis - Foxtrott Anglagard - Epilog Jethro Tull - A passion play Better than Rush, ELP, Marillion...

I'm looking at all these comments and all of us should have made up the list. I think we all agree Close To The Edge is one, with Crimson King being second. ELP, should be somewhere. A Farewell To Kings instead of Movie Pictures. Tull and the Moodies could be on this list with different albums. All in all, I think they should have made a top 50!!
Foxtrot? Close to the edge? Trilogy? In the land of the grey and pink? Godbluff? The Snow goose? Animals? The Lamb? Acquiring the taste? Ok... 10 albums are definitely to enough 😉
NO ELP?? I've never seen a more bogus list (yes, I know this is all opinion and I respect everybody's). NO ELP?? Dark Side Of The Moon at #2? NO ELP?? Steve Wilson (The One And Only!)? NO ELP?? Fragile instead of Close To The Edge? NO ELP?? Aqualung and Moving Pictures (neither are progressive bands)? NO ELP?? But the real mindblower - NO ELP??
Not a bad list but I would put Close to the Edge at 1, followed by Selling England at 2. Fragile has three classic tracks and too many fillers. For those asking where is Tales from Topographic Oceans, I belong to the camp that it is too long yet the themes are underdeveloped with way too much meandering and it should have been edited down to a single album. I sold my original 1973 vinyl copy of TFTO a couple of years ago.

The list is controversial, to say the least. Aqualung is my favorite Jethro Tull album, but I don't see it as pure prog. The tracks on there are a lot more closer to the sound of the first three albums with Barre, mixing folk, blues, jazz and Hard Rock. Of course, the mixing of styles itself could be considered prog, but I think Thick as a Brick is the true Jethro Tull prog masterpice, even if it's not their best release (that's up for debate, of course). Fragile is a great album, but almost every Yes fan will choose Close To The Edge over it. Speaking of Steven Wilson, I love his solo work and Porcupine Tree, Raven is ia great album, but it's unfair to include him among the top 10 of all time while leaving out Gentle Giant, Caravan, Renaissance and Van der Graaf Generator, imo. Marillion has its importance as well, but it's not on the same level of the first classic prog bands.
Music is too subjective to ever be placed in lists that are right or wrong. As a reject from the 70s, it's hard to put anything modern in top10. I like Steve Wilson. BUT, I *love* "the Whirlwind" as much as Yes classics :)
Only one I agree that is in the right place is KC - In The Court Of The Crimson King, Then it would be Yes - Close To The Edge not Fragile. Third for me would be Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery, they weren't even mentioned here. Next would be Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick not Aqualung. Next would be Gentle Giant - Free Hand, again they weren't even mentioned here. Next would be Rush - Moving Pictures. Next would be Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Next would be Camel - Moon Madness. Next would be Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon. Last would be Last would be U.K. - U.K., their first album. Marillion, Steven Wilson and Moody Blues are not in this league at all.
I usually see old men over 60 here - and they're probably all stuck in the music of the 70s and can't or don't want to look beyond that. In my opinion, bands like Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Flower Kings etc. have more to offer than ELP & Co. PS: I myself was born in 1954.
The description of, (Selling England By The Pound), doesn't add up to just how much it highlights the members musical prowess. There playing is so tight and insinc.
If you take practically ANYTHING from the classic Prog era and substitute it in for Steven Wilson, this is one of the more respectable lists I've seen like this. Especially fitting here would have been Brain Salad Surgery or Tarkus. No ELP? No GG? No VDDG? And Rush and Pink Floyd are simply not "Prog" bands (haters GET AT ME!) LOL - Nice list tho. Cool video.
Actually the most accurate "top ten" for prog albums I've seen so far. Good job.

Can't believe I sold that album. Islands is also interesting. Foxtrot is hard to leave out with Supper's Ready, maybe the most extraordinary 20+ minute composition of the era.
Erratum: 'the most extraordinary 20+ minute composition of all time.'
Oldfield tho........
Thanks for watching! Love the recommendation.
Yes best band ever!!

The best prog album of all time is The Snow Goose by Camel.
@@MrHistorian123
I think Peter and the Wolf has narration.
@@paulbrookes413 It does.
One of the best!!
About time someone shows some love for camel, for me the lamb, and tarkus/brain salad surgery would be a must on this list
Bloody hell! Me long lost twin brodah! Cheers from Brazil!
Demons and Wizards by Uriah Heep.
Nice list. My top 10, some differences:
Stomu Yamashta - Go
UK - UK
Focus - Moving Waves
ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
Yes - Close to the Edge
Genesis - A Trick of the Tail
Zappa - Apostrophe
ITCOTCK - Crimson
Tull - Aqualung
Floyd - DSOTM
Thanks for watching! Great list!
Selling in england by the Pound number 1❤
Such a brave attempt. I compiled a top twenty list some years ago and within weeks substantially changed it, it all depends on my mood and what I have been listening to. I totally agree with your choice of In the Court of the Crimson King as the top choice. Mirage by Camel is also a personal choice and I remember buying Days of Future Past very high on my list although oddly I disliked other Moody Blues albums. Some great choices from others here such as Foxtrot. My own list is littered with Arena and Pendragon albums. Be great to see what we all think are essential Prog Albums without ranking them.
Thanks for sharing and watching Robert!
Nice to see Misplaced Childhood in there.
An album that is thought provoking.
And the others aren't?
@@philwheal192 Doh!
An interesting list . I think that ELP's Tarkus , or Brain Salad Surgery , belong on this list . Also , I would replace Days of Future Passed with On the Threshold of a Dream . Cheers !
Genesis
Yes
Camel
ELP
Gentle Giant
Kayak
FM
Steve Hillage
Jethro Tull
PFM
I can't do albums, or songs - just too much greatness, and much of it from the same bands.
Thanks so much for watching and providing your list as well. A lot of great groups mentioned here and of course hard to limit the best to just 10.
@@scifiartman8370 Absolutely agree! Quite amazing how music becomes so synonymous with our memory and allow us to reflect upon it so fondly.
Roger Dean designed Uriah Heep's Demons and Wizards, and Magicians Birthday. Not just stunning art work, but two very, very good progressive rock albums of our time.
Personally, I think animals is a better choice than dsotm, but I can see how, it revolutionized prog rock
I like Animals better than DSOTM, it is more proggy.
I don’t Class Floyd as Prog Rock!
@@wamgoc what are they then?
@@davidgilmore559 Were they not psychedelic rock? They were never Prog!
@@wamgoc have you even listened to Pink Floyd? Animals, the wall and wish you were here were definitely prog rock. Early Pink Floyd up to dsotm was psychedelic rock, and after that they were prog rock
no Gentle Giant?
How would you even dare compare and try to rate these albums?
To call one better than the other??? REALLY??? It was a nice try.
There are arguably dozens of great Prog rock albums!!!
I’m just so glad I grew up with the genre. Prog Rock is such an awesome contribution to the world of art!!!
Agree with with King crimson being number one but I would put either foxtrot, nursery crime, selling England by the pound, or lamb lies down on Broadway second, and either close to the edge or tales of topographic oceans third. At least you didn't put Supertramp in there like some other guy did
Seriously, no Close to the Edge?
my 10
1. Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
2. Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn
3. Camel - Mirage
4. Klaatu - 3:47 EST
5. Rush - Moving Pictures
6. TRIUMVIRAT - Spartacus
7. Jetro Tull - Thick as a Brick
8. Steve Hackett - Voyage Of The Acolyte
9. ELP - Pictures At An Exhibition
10. Jon & Vangelis - Private Collection
Kansas, Focus and Gentle Giant must be on the list.
glad to see a RUSH album on the list but . . .
Farewell to Kings
Hemispheres
. . . both serve the prog rock milleu better imho
and the list can't be complete (again, imho) without an ELP album
so, either Tarkus or Brain Salad Surgery at least deserve an "honorable mention"
Not glad to see Rush on the list, Space Rock is a different genre.
@@marsstubblefield Okay, we all have own opinion, it's just I am no fan of Hawkwind, whereas I have been a fan of Rush and now they are defunct I tend towards Mogwai and Muse.
@@timothysoar1321 you lost me as to where Space Rock enters the discussion other than you brining it up - the Space Rock genre is not my opinion - it's a fact
@@marsstubblefield hi on that we are fine.
Great choices
True Progessive albums that must be included are Close to the Edge as numer 1 and Selling England and Passion Play in middle spots
No Jade Warrior....& NO Mike Oldfield ?? strange .
dark side of the moon (as they play something off the wall)
In your humble opinion, surely
Close to the edge is better than Fragile and Foxtrot is better than Selling England.
I miss some albums:
Van der Graaf Generator - Godbluff
Gentle Giants - Glashouse
Genesis - Foxtrott
Anglagard - Epilog
Jethro Tull - A passion play
Better than Rush, ELP, Marillion...
Thought provoking post....
I'm guessing that you are only taking one single studio album per artist/band... I could pick holes in this, but the idea is to put forward your choice, not to criticize the post... So .....
10. Telegraph - Mir
09. Steven Wilson - The Raven who Refused to Sing
08. Focus - Hamburger Concerto
07. Bo Hansson - Lord of the Rings
06. Autumn - Oceanworld
05. Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte
04. Camel - Mirage
03. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
02.Yes - Fragile
01. Genesis - Nursery Cryme
I'm not a big fan of Gentle Giant, Van Der Graf Generator, Marillion, Rush, Jethro Tull, or Dream Theatre. There are some very good to great tracks on the first 4 ELP albums, but not enough consistency overall, for me....
Good choice Focus in there. A lot of people forget about them. They have some great albums !
I’m a big fan of Yes, Genesis, ELP and King Crimson, but Thick as a Brick has to be the number one Prog album.
This is probably my 7th comment on this. I'm beside myself, no ELP. But, they got this list wrong!
I guess you must be an ELP fan????????
How could you tell?? ;) #3 on my personal list, only after Zeppelin and Yes.
So much this ^^^
Spot on.
1.Porcupine tree
2.Dream theater
3.Riverside
4.The pineapple ttheir
All albums
Asia by Asia. Prog with feeling
The lamb nr. 1
With only one entry per artist
10) Le Orme Uomo Di Pezza
09) Cardiacs Sing To God
08) King Crimson In The Court Of The Crimson King
07) Yes Close To The Edge
06) Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here
05) Banco del Mutuo Soccorso Io Sono Nato Libero
04) Genesis The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
03) Jethro Tull Thick As A Brick
02) Peter Hammill The Silent Corner And The Empty Stage
01) Van der Graaf Generator Godbluff
Nice RPI selections... tho I think I'd have PFM "Per Un Amico" over the BDMS record. Nice list!
@@scotslater Per Un Amico would have been next! Roller (Goblin) and Arbeit Macht Frei (Area) soon thereafter.
@@vdggmouse9512 I love all these records. I just can't justify that much Italian stuff in an all-time top 10. Reminds me to listen to Roller again already... It's been too long. Follow up with a nice Suspiria.
@@scotslater I only had 2 in the top 10. The others would crack my top 20 or 30. Suspiria is great! I saw Goblin about 15 years ago.

porcupine tree deadwing 2005

supertramp supertramp 1970
Thanks for watching and taking the time to give your input. Hope you enjoyed the content!
To think that I sat in the kitchen where Greg and Robert rehearsed the Crimson King songs ...
Were you close to the veg?
Music is too subjective to ever be placed in lists that are right or wrong. As a reject from the 70s, it's hard to put anything modern in top10. I like Steve Wilson. BUT, I *love* "the Whirlwind" as much as Yes classics :)
Well said!
Agreed. It's subjective. Certain people who call themselves "prog experts" in these comments need to go back to school.
Excellent video....
Thank you!
Marillion, Steven Wilson and Moody Blues shouldn’t be on the list.
Instead, Red by King Crimson, Tarkus by ELP and Thick as a Brick could be.
ELP- Brain Salad Surgery ( Tarkus is a good one too!); Gentle Giant.... nevertheless a strong top 10
And at nuber 11? Close to the Edge?? usually tops most prog lists.
It's a good one!
Only one I agree that is in the right place is KC - In The Court Of The Crimson King,
Then it would be Yes - Close To The Edge not Fragile.
Misplaced Childhood is NOT about Fish's childhood memories.
so,where is:
yes-close to the edge
caravan- In The Land Of Grey And Pink
jethro tull-thick as a brick
I usually see old men over 60 here - and they're probably all stuck in the music of the 70s and can't or don't want to look beyond that. In my opinion, bands like Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Flower Kings etc. have more to offer than ELP & Co. PS: I myself was born in 1954.
Strong list, no 'Close to the edge' though. Twice as good as 'Fragile' in my book.....
Unbelievable that Close to the Edge is not in that list
The description of, (Selling England By The Pound), doesn't add up to just how much it highlights the members musical prowess. There playing is so tight and insinc.
Okay.
I think that Odin (band) deserves to be in all lists, their two first albums are amazing, so I think that it would be a good idea.
McKenree Spring “3” & Blodwyn Pig “A Head Rings Out”, should’ve made your list.
You are braver than me! I'd be listing a hundred or so! LOL Thanks!
Tough to narrow it down to just 10!
Close to the Edge should have been #1 or 2. ITCOTCK is definitely top 3 all -time though.
very accurate list IMO. most people say Close to the edge for Yes, but i agree, Fragile!!
Thanks for watching Patrick! Glad you enjoyed our list.
Half of Fragile is waffle. CTTE is a fully realised masterpiece.
Very arguable.
Indeed!
Steve Wilson, rush??? In the court as number one?
Please, no Keith Emerson? He was at the very start of inventing progrock, without knowing it .
Angel/ST-1975, Angel/Helluva Band-1976!!...POMP
Where the hell is "Close to the edge"?? Are you serious?? That should be Nr. 1!!
Almost Every Steven Wilson Album is a Love Letter Homage to 70 ies Prog. I mean the Guy Remastered All the Gentle Giant Album alone.
Definitely Close To The Edge over Fragile, otherwise, not bad.
Great
Close To The Edge is not in your Top 10. You make me laugh.
ELP?
"Dark side of the Moon" introduced, BUT sound is from "The wall"
Sorry but any list that does not include Close to the Edge is just plain wrong.
No such thing as a 'top ten'!
Cool video.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Rush are not prog they are their own music type
