0:42 It's not that the traffic lights doesn't work. when Traffic intensifies like in rush hour, traffic police tend to take over as u can see in the left corner. when traffic is really light, in some junctions, the lights are turned off. Depends on how much traffic there is and the location it tends to be turned on or off. Atleast in colombo.

Lakshman Kadirgamar, a highly esteemed Sri Lankan Tamil statesman, diplomat, and lawyer, served as Sri Lanka's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 2001 and again from April 2004 until his tragic assassination in August 2005. Born on April 12, 1932, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Kadirgamar received his education at Trinity College in Kandy, deviating from his brothers who attended Royal College Colombo.
Before entering politics, Kadirgamar enjoyed a distinguished legal career, practicing law in both Sri Lanka and abroad. He pursued his education at the University of Ceylon and later undertook higher studies at the University of Oxford, where he focused on law. Notably, he became the second Sri Lankan to serve as president of the Oxford Union in 1959. Following his studies, he was called to the Bar at Gray's Inn, London, and practiced law in both Sri Lanka and England.
Kadirgamar's tenure as Foreign Minister was characterized by his dedication to promoting peace and reconciliation in Sri Lanka, especially during the nation's prolonged civil conflict between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). He advocated for a negotiated settlement to the conflict and engaged with the international community to address the grievances of all ethnic communities in Sri Lanka. He vehemently opposed the LTTE's armed conflict and courageously labeled them a terrorist organization rather than mere rebels who threatened the lives of innocent Sri Lankans. Notably, he spearheaded efforts to designate Poya Day as a holiday and list the LTTE as a terrorist organization within the United Nations.
Additionally, Kadirgamar worked tirelessly to establish Buddhist Poya day as a globally recognized holiday within the United Nations.
Tragically, Kadirgamar's life was cut short when he was assassinated by an LTTE sniper on August 12, 2005, outside his home in Colombo. His assassination sparked condemnation both within Sri Lanka and internationally. Despite his untimely death, Kadirgamar's legacy endures, commemorated for his unwavering commitment to peace, reconciliation, and international relations.
Known for his sharp wit, Kadirgamar once responded pointedly to Australian cricketer Shane Warne's apprehensions about terrorist threats in Colombo during the 1996 Cricket World Cup. Warne had expressed concerns about potential dangers, suggesting that he could be targeted by a drive-in bomber while shopping. Kadirgamar's retort, "Shopping is for sissies," garnered attention and stirred controversy. Subsequently, the Australian Prime Minister personally reached out to Kadirgamar to address the incident and ease tensions. Later, Kadirgamar extended an olive branch by sending a bouquet of flowers to his Australian counterpart, reportedly remarking, "Flowers are also for sissies."
Kadirgamar's tenure as Foreign Minister significantly influenced international opinion on Sri Lanka and the LTTE, contributing to the LTTE's eventual defeat in 2009. His recognition of the need for significant change within Sri Lanka to foster peaceful coexistence among its communities remains a vital part of his legacy.
In honor of his memory, the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies, a think tank focusing on international affairs, was established a year after his assassination. Additionally, a statue of Kadirgamar now stands at the Liberty roundabout in Colombo.
Furthermore, Balliol College established the Lakshman Kadirgamar Fund in April 2013 to assist students from Asia, perpetuating his legacy of educational support. Sri Lanka posthumously awarded him its highest national honor, Sri Lankabhimanya.
Reflecting on his time at Oxford University, Kadirgamar humbly remarked , "Oxford was the icing on the cake, but the cake was baked at home," drawing attention to his humble Sri Lankan heritage during his acceptance speech upon being elected an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College in 2004, amidst resounding applause from his fellow Oxford alumni.

Kardiragamar was a nice person but he failed to educate foreign politicians and others that:
1. Sri Lanka is one of the first countries to introduce all important government documents in ALL three languages - Sinhala, English and Tamil. . ( Birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates , Stamps, etc)
2. That certain government officials such as doctors, had to pass departmental examinations in spoken Tamil to get promotions and increments
