That’s what happens when you’re a baseball fan first. I’m here for it. As an orioles fan, I hate the Yankees. But I respect the greats. Jeter, Posada, Judge, Mattingly. For those that are unaware: 36 years ago Cal Ripken Sr was the Orioles manager, and even though he was widely known as the father of Baltimore baseball, pioneer of The Oriole Way and staple of the community loved by fans all across the country, he was fired after a 6 game losing streak in 1988. The Orioles would go on to lose 15 more games and set a new AL record with 21 straight losses. Shortly thereafter, Billy Ripken would join the Orioles and don the #7 worn by his father. After Billy, the #7 would become the “unretired, retired number” of the Orioles organization. Well, fast forward 36 years later and Jackson Holliday would make his debut with the Baltimore Orioles, and is very clearly going to be a perennial MVP caliber talent. As Jackson makes his first splash on the scene, the Chicago White Sox are simultaneously on the brink of break the 1988 record held by the Orioles, a record they will break before midnight tonight. Finally. You might be asking yourself, why this year? What makes this year special? Well normally I’d say, the fact that the Orioles had a very disappointing October last year after being the 1st overall seed of the AL which always leads to immense playoff success in all sports with great teams like this great, young team in Baltimore. But, the fact of the matter is, just before Opening Day this season, David Rubenstein officially took over ownership of the Baltimore Orioles, ending a 30+ year reign of terror from the Angelos family, and guess who was a member of that group that purchased the Orioles with Rubenstein? You guessed it, Cal Ripken Jr. the iron man, the one and only, the King of Orioles Baseball, and hero to the city of Baltimore and baseball alike, after his saving of MLB during the 1994 strike via his consecutive games streak which owners and players chose to end the strike to avoid ending Cal’s streak after he publicly stated he would not play if the owners brought in minor league and B grade players to fill out rosters and start the 1995 season without the true major league players. You’re welcome baseball, and this is our reward, a dynasty. This is just going to be the second year of what will become known as the current dynasty baseball over the next 15 seasons. The Baseball Gods Are With Us! Love you, miss you Senior, you’re with us always!!
