I think it is neat that in the Netherlands they have a program for people to do this. There are many buildings here in the Us. that i think they could turn into apartments so the buidling are not sitting falling apart or say people squatting in them and messing them up. I think it is neat.
The reason why you can’t just do this in the US is because the building still has to meet the code based on the state in order for it to be livable for someone, hence why the building just sit there, and it’s way more expensive trying to convert an existing building (office building, hospitals, schools, etc.) in to an apartment building
@@princess_niya2407 I understand what your trying to say but many buildings in the u.s will sit and Rot because of certain codes. Yet they will build all these new buildings and pay to demolish buildings they could redo . Not quite sure how that is cheaper. I think all the red tape in America is what causes such a shortage of housing.
@@patriciabritton5917 I think it’s cheaper to just build a whole new building instead of converting or remodeling a building because it’s less things you have to work around/ remove to meet the proper codes to have a livable space, kinda just how I someone was to buy an abandon house the cheaper route would be to just demolish the house and start from scratch
I’ve seen a few people turn old schools into houses or apartments in a few places in the U.S. Expensive depending on the state of the building but doable with grants and money of course.
@@patriciabritton5917also another reason they sit and rot is because the banks don’t want to pay on them anymore. They let them fall apart and someone buys the land eventually and gets a loan from the same bank and builds something profitable on the land.

I see how she would want to live in a proper house. But with property being so expensive. This would be awesome as a solution to the housing crisis here in the US
I bet you vote democrat and support open boarders, then wonder why there's so many homeless people. It's not due to greed, it's due to high taxes and too many mouths to feed.
no one should profit off the fruits of anyone elses labor. that means you shouldnt take other peoples money. if you dont want to support yourself why should others?
If US did this it would be two families a classroom, rent would be 2 grand, and that makeshift shower would be considered a luxury compared to whatever would be put in the US one. . . . .
I knew a woman in the UK who lived in an old school building for similar reasons. I think she was there for about 2 years before they tore it down. My grandmother's old high school was closed down in the 1970s (it was built in the early 1900s) and they never tore it down, but someone finally bought it and restored it into apartments about 10 years ago. It's absolutely beautiful now.
There's definitely some negatives to this like not having a decent shower and the cooking area isn't the best, but overall this is so unique and, in my opnion, such a great experience for short-term living for a young person or couples. I wish the US had programs like this. It would probably help low-income folks get housing opportunities as well as helping them save up money for another place.
Happens all the time, they always take old elementary schools in the city I live and turn them into apartments. My friend lived in one and I was so jealous of their coat closet. It was the old huge long coat room that the classroom had with all the hooks . Even had a chalkboard that the landlord never took down.
I wish the state I lived in did that. I live in a small town in South Georgia . The amount of empty abandoned schools we have is sad. Not just schools too but so many empty buildings . They build buildings , open a business and close it within months or less than three years . The buildings sit there and they continue the process again
Those were properly converted into residential units with bathrooms and kitchens and so forth. They do conversions all the time in most cities. They take old office buildings and schools and hotels and turn them into luxury condos. An old 1940s granite and marble office building near the white house that I used to work in is now an Embassy Suites.
I think that is an excellent way of protecting buildings. It also helps the structure to not get moisture built up because there is heat to keep the buildings dry.
i wish we had companies and programs like this for our empty buildings/homes. we have millions of them in the U.S. sitting empty just falling apart that could house people. your video and former home were amazing! thank you for the tour.
The incentive is to make sure that everything is locked up, even though the space is not used in years, because American homeless people are trashy and have drug problems. Maybe in some more civilized country with somebody to oversee things and to make sure that tenants are responsible and not trashy.
I always used to wonder what it would be like to live in the classrooms of schools. Seems pretty cool but I understand why you might want to have your own place.

I remember two squatters in the news here in the UK back in the 90's i think squatted in a house in London for 12yrs. When the 12yrs were up they sold the house for just over £250K which was quite a bit of money back then. I think this 'ACT' is still legal/practiced here in the UK so this procedure seems pretty good shown here in the video. Stops people trying to claim something for nothing.
In one of my old work areas an elementary school had been converted to residential use, senior living I think. Each classroom had by area convention (code?) two doors to the hallway. One at the teachers desk end of the room and one at the other end. Each classroom was divided into an efficiency (or studio if you prefer that designation) apartment. The old classrooms had at least one door exiting to the outside of the building. Each apartment had one outside exit door also and a very small concrete slab a a patio. They may have added an outside door to the units that did not have a preexisting outside door. They can do this in my country (USA) right now by having the live in person as an employed caretaker. In writing as part of their duties that they live on the property. Requiring they live on the property exempts them from income tax for the amount of money they would have paid for rent. If your employer provides housing, but not a job requirement that you live there, then the 'free" rent is considered income and taxable.
Nice tour and that sounds like a good program. I wonder why it takes so long to tear down unused buildings. In the USA, we have a lot of empty buildings in all sizes of cities.
Thank you for sharing. It’s interesting to see how different people live in different parts of the world. I like the idea of putting vacant buildings that are still usable to provide housing for low income individuals. What a wonderful idea.
Man, I wish the states had something like this. It would really help me immensely right now trying to get out of a toxic situation with very little income. That's very neat.
I once went to see another anti squatting place and ran into someone who went through a divorce and had to get a temporary place like this. It’s really helpful in situations like yours. I hope you find a solution quickly, sending you prayers❤️
Deni, I can say the idea of living in a school is awesome! I like the decoration in your room and the size of it. In a normal house you can't get room that big. And that hallway...You can start a football match over there! And the room for fun, the tennis table...I see you were dropping a party over there 😁Now I'm thinking I didn't see the biggest basketball/volleyball gym...Oh, that will be priceless. You are living in a dream, so jealous.🤩
Awesome vlog Denise!! I look forward to seeing a house tour of your new place! And btw, hopefully you'll post more irl vlogs in the future, keep up the good work
I do technical services and engineering for one of such companies. We actually have a whole university at our disposal, the place is called "De Biotoop". In our case we needed to invest a lot to keep the place running because it is stuffed to the brim with industrial equipment (=$). But it's fun to share such a big place with many interesting people!
When I was in elementary school in Sharon, PA, USA, my mom and I lived in an apartment complex that had formerly been a school. (Sadly, it burned down in a fire a decade after we moved.) It had actually been built in 1908.
there is actually a married couple in the usa who bought a school building and made it into a home they are on youtube www.youtube.com/@StacieGrissom/videos
There's something about old schools that are interesting. One summer i was a janitor at this run down school from the 70's, they built it using salt water so it all went to hell structurally over the years. buckets scattered around to collect water from the ceilings etc. But as a janitor that summer when everything was empty was such a mood, i would gladly have worked as a janitor there for the rest of my life tbh. But yeah they finally knocked down the school and built a new one.
Lot's of old Schools for sale around USA for DIRT cheap ... with full size gym basketball courts, etc ... unfortunately the heating/cooling bills are more than mortgage payments on a multi million dollar house.
That’s what I was afraid of. Lucky for me I didn’t have to pay for the heating bills. It was an all in price for me! In my new house I do have to pay the bills separately
That is actually a great concept i wish my country would implement in America we have a big homeless problem in an every city all over we have abandoned buildings that eventually you get squatting and all kind of illicit activity going on inside them great video.
Weird, quirky, i like it. Kinda like owning a mansion and using half the rooms lol either way good use of space from what was shown. Id def rent classrooms out to some friends. The usage of the gym room is how id also use that, beer pong. Itd be cool if the school had an indoor pool. Nice video, very cool there is a program to prevent squatters from taking it over.
Hi Emily! We had little locks and hooks on the outside of the door. So when you left the building you could lock it. But when you’re home there wasn’t really a lock except the contraption my dad build for me to sleep well knowing the door couldn’t be opened
this would be a great program for the UK as we have so many empty places that just sit empty and the price of housing is so expensive would help a lot of people
This living situation is a great idea. Good for the property owners to keep their buildings from being squatted and or used for illegal activities. Both can cause more problems for them. It gives someone an affordable, temporary housing. I'm assuming it's also safer than alternative temporary housing.
Cool but kind of creepy. I think some invetment by the landlord in some paint, splashes of color, cactuses and other easy to care for plants (or immitation plants for that matter), and better automatic lighting would go a long way to making the place feel more inviting. That and all the bathjooms need new hardware. Those toilets and sinks from 60 years ago have to go. Lot of potential but needs a lot of work. Glad you enjoyed your stay though.
Honestly if it was cheap and the bathroom was a little better I would totally do this. I could actually see how, with a bit of renovation, a school like this could be a decent little apartment building.
Wish there was a program like that here, so many people on the street because they cant afford the high rents. Lots of old/empty building we could turn into “affordable” living but most get bought up and turned into more expensive/unaffordable apt/condos
Omg I thought I was the only one. I got rid of it when I got i to my new home. The seat went flat within a year and the arm rests got super loose. I did get some money back from the company because of the warranty.
This is pretty cool, but at the same time too... I would never live in a school, or big building or warehouse as a home because it would be a waste of space... too much space not being utilized or taking advantage of. Plus it can get too scary being by yourself at times in that big amount of space. Ideal for me is a 4000 sqft to 5000 sqft house. Also the bills, cleaning, and maintenance would be too much on them big structures.
We as a house decided to always lock the front doors whenever we got home. For sleeping I used a stick to stop someone from getting in my bedroom unwanted
My middle school had the 6-7-8 grades there . They moved the students to another school across town . They turned the middle school in to apartments. The apartments really came out nice.
There is a warming center and temporary quarters for the homeless in Macon, GA at the old Brookdale Elementary School. The United Way and other community leaders began this when a homeless person froze to death. It's a concept to be expanded on. Turtletown, TN has a school that's sat vacant for 20 years. Too bad someone isn't this proactive. It'd make a nice community building if there is no homeless populace.
Kind of a quaint way to live. I hope she realizes she may have just blown her good reference (and her house mates') if the people in charge watch this video.
I wish this was possible in California. But the zoning regulations and laws not allow repurposing old businesses and buildings into residential. That’s why live/work properties are in the millions $$$
I hope they do this when my local school district closes they've been barely getting by for years and the more time go's by the less people live in my in my hometown
Hahahahaha yeah like I mentioned in the video, I never showered there. There are schools which have the old PE class showers. If you get those you’re pretty good, but this was ehhh not so great
This is an awesome idea! Maybe if more programs like this existed around the world maybe homelessness wouldn’t be quite as common. I walk past a lot of abandoned buildings too. Leaving them empty seems like such a waste when they can still be inhabited.
I love this! I definitely think that many homeless people in America could benefit from this! Great idea . I think we should implement something like this over here . Thanks so much for sharing. This is so cool.
A friend of mine lived in a school in Leamington as an AdHoc guardian for about five years! He was in the old IT room and had about a million power sockets all around the room. There should be more property guardian schemes - empty buildings are criminal. Landlords of empty buildings should have their council tax tripled.

Super cool living accommodations! HTanks for sharing!
Living in an old school sounds interesting. Your two rooms look great. It would cut down on squatters to rent it out.
The jucuzzi looks great too.
"Its really dark in here, you can't see much.."
*The closet literally being the gateway to the shadow realm*
Hahahahahahah, the ender dragon was waiting for me on the other side
Man, I wish the states had something like this. It would really help me immensely right now trying to get out of a toxic situation with very little income. That's very neat.
I once went to see another anti squatting place and ran into someone who went through a divorce and had to get a temporary place like this. It’s really helpful in situations like yours. I hope you find a solution quickly, sending you prayers❤️
A haunted elementary school sounds terrifying! 😂 Love the idea though
And btw, hopefully you'll post more irl vlogs in the future, keep up the good work
Thank you!❤️
My landlord doesn't hear this or see this haha, very nice. It's a gorgeous place, well done for making it your own.
(Sadly, it burned down in a fire a decade after we moved.)
It had actually been built in 1908.
That is so cool and sad that it burned down! Must have been a cool experience to live there
They should really do this in the USA...I'd do it. 😀
there is actually a married couple in the usa who bought a school building and made it into a home they are on youtube www.youtube.com/@StacieGrissom/videos
I think so too plus I could do it for a year and save so much money and move back into a conventional home
This is awesome !!! I love reusing a building for smthg new and super clever !
That's such a good idea, I wish they had that in England.
Great idea! Wish UK would do something like this xx
I wish I could live in a school building too 😊❤ taking care of the property as well
This is awesome ! I think it should be renovated into apartments.
It’s currently in that state! The school is gone right now.
What a cool idea
Other countries should do this
I've seen this done to high schools. The transformation is amazing
Thank you!
That is actually a great concept i wish my country would implement in America we have a big homeless problem in an every city all over we have abandoned buildings that eventually you get squatting and all kind of illicit activity going on inside them great video.
This is smart, i wish more places did this. We house a housing crisis and so many empty properties.
This is putting an old building to good use.
Omg. So much cleaning if u lived there in that mansion. The place is huge 😮
How do you secure this? Doesn’t seem to be locks on any of the doors
funny that this is the same questions we have to ask at functioning elementary schools in the usa
Hi Emily! We had little locks and hooks on the outside of the door. So when you left the building you could lock it. But when you’re home there wasn’t really a lock except the contraption my dad build for me to sleep well knowing the door couldn’t be opened
@@denieess_xI appreciate your answer! I can also appreciate that in other countries people are more respectful and courteous of other people.
this would be a great program for the UK as we have so many empty places that just sit empty and the price of housing is so expensive would help a lot of people
Especially London, the pricing for a student room is beyond anything
This is so awesome! Love what you've done with your rooms
See Crashing (British TV series)
I enjoyed it. I imagine the real-life experiences aren't the same.... :)
Beautiful….. I feel in love with the blue pants!!!😍
That is an amazing idea and conversion.
This living situation is a great idea. Good for the property owners to keep their buildings from being squatted and or used for illegal activities. Both can cause more problems for them. It gives someone an affordable, temporary housing. I'm assuming it's also safer than alternative temporary housing.
Where in Netherlands is this? I have family in Leiden, Leiderdorp, Zoetermeer and Lelystad.
Girl has guts for real.
Honestly if it was cheap and the bathroom was a little better I would totally do this. I could actually see how, with a bit of renovation, a school like this could be a decent little apartment building.
How cool is this?!? Absolutely brilliant!
Wish there was a program like that here, so many people on the street because they cant afford the high rents. Lots of old/empty building we could turn into “affordable” living but most get bought up and turned into more expensive/unaffordable apt/condos
I have that same gaming chair and I swear it's the most uncomfortable seat I've ever sat in. Awesome tour!
Do you have locks on your doors for privacy at night?
Very true but I actually just quit anti squatting so everything is fine now
@@denieess_x I hope your next home brings you joy, peace, and security
I wish this was possible in California. But the zoning regulations and laws not allow repurposing old businesses and buildings into residential. That’s why live/work properties are in the millions $$$
That’s very neat how you did that keep up the hard work
I would most def make this in to a beautiful house. Brake some walls, and make them bigger rooms.
I hope they do this when my local school district closes they've been barely getting by for years and the more time go's by the less people live in my in my hometown
As long as there is Wi-Fi I will live here.
We had wifi!
Does it have a Library and was anything left behind??
I think it would be neat if the US did this . I know where a abandoned mansion is and it has so much opportunity for things like this.
@1st i was like "O awesome...i want to live in a school!!"
...has a shower in the toilet 🫤
Hahahahaha yeah like I mentioned in the video, I never showered there. There are schools which have the old PE class showers. If you get those you’re pretty good, but this was ehhh not so great
This is an awesome idea! Maybe if more programs like this existed around the world maybe homelessness wouldn’t be quite as common. I walk past a lot of abandoned buildings too. Leaving them empty seems like such a waste when they can still be inhabited.
This is crazy but cool. What a great rule that is though, there are so many empty buildings in the UK they could do with some people living in them!
She's so pretty.
But yeah this gave me Zombie Apocalypse vibes 😂
I got to stay (thru friends of friends) in an anti-squat in an industrial section of the Het Ij while staying in Amsterdam. IT WAS SO COOL.
A cellphone tripod is under $50.
Always keep the camera lens at eye level (or slightly above).
this is kool af
Oh wow those classrooms would be GREAT art studios!!
A friend of mine used to paint in the PE room!
We do this in the uk it’s called property guardians
They have this system in the UK too.
Landlords of empty buildings should have their council tax tripled.
very interesting idea to rent out an old building to make sure it's not over taken by squatters
Interesting House You Have There(Former Elementary School)
