Steve Howe joining Yes in 1970 was Big Bang moment for prog guitar. Its universe expanded, and when its stars aligned all kinds of strange magic occurred. Howe’s transcendent skills as a player and songwriter ignited a creative fire in the group, and they kicked off 1971 in grand style, starting with 'The Yes Album.' On this record songs were stretched, twisted, examined until they broke out of their space and worked on multiple levels. The album was brimming with expansive, energetic, and hook-filled rockers like “Yours Is No Disgrace,” “Starship Trooper,” and “I’ve Seen All Good People,” each of which made full use of Howe’s wide-ranging repertoire of guitar styles. 'The Yes Album' turned the heads of critics and record buyers alike, hitting number four in the U.K. and cracking the U.S. Top 40. Howe has described the album as “post-psychedelia.” - GuitarPlayer and Louder
Very well said; his playing took YES to a new level. And then on the next album they supercharged the keyboards by replacing Tony Kaye with Rick Wakeman (Steve Howe: Peter Banks as Rick Wakeman: Tony Kaye)….and then they became the greatest band ever because the rhythm section was already at the highest caliber. IMHO
"It felt like a cosmic, spiritual, sonic experience. You feel lifted" "I feel like I have been hugged by an angel, the stars, galaxies, and everything." I think that about says it all. Yes certainly fries the emotions and the brain. Great stuff.
You’ll definitely dig other early Yes classics: Yours is No Disgrace, And You and I, I’ve Seen All Good People. So glad to be along this ride with you!
Nice reaction, I was actually surprised that you liked it so much. I see other commenters saying to now listen to "Close to the Edge". DO NOT GO THERE YET! You have to be more prepared by listening to the types of songs that you are doing now - this will get you 'acclimatized' to the way Yes approaches music. You should do 2 other songs from The Yes Album (you've already done Starship Trooper and Perpetual Change) Yours is No Disgrace and I've Seen All Good People. Then go to the album Fragile (you've done Roundabout on that one) and do Heart of the Sunrise and South Side of the Sky. THEN you will be ready for Close to the Edge. Trust me - I've seen other reaction videos where the listener jumps right into CTTE and they either get confused to what they just listened to, or they out right hate it. So DO NOT GO THERE yet. :) And save the song Awaken for even later. All there songs between 1971 -76 are gems - there are absolutely no lesser (filler) tracks. Enjoy the journey and discovery of a most remarkable band..
So glad to see you appreciate Yes!❤ As you may know they are the #1 Progressive Rock band Ever! The Lyrics…Yes is known for obscure lyrics, sometimes literal but mostly not. Jon Anderson enjoyed using words because “they sounded good”! He enjoys that the words have different meanings for different people. So don’t get hung up on the words…whatever they mean to you…& they may change at different times in your life(I’ve been a fan over 50 years). And some songs tell a story or message… The other other comment above said -Don’t listen to CTTE yet…he’s right. Not sure why people recommend it to a knew listener of Yes. It’s the #1 Prog Song! It’s Epic! It’s long and complex and takes you on a journey😊But may be “a lot” for some people to appreciate- After hearing these Favs- You’ll Really appreciate the complexity of CTTE ❤ Roundabout Starship Trooper Yours is No Disgrace I’ve seen All Good People Heart of the Sunrise And you and I Wonderous Stories South Side of the Sky Siberian Khatru Close to the Edge Awaken The entire Relayer Album❤ Tales of Topographic Oceans And Many More!!!
That soft jazzy guitar part in the middle always gives me some Parisian vibe, no clue why, just imagining a misty morning walking along the Seine (when it is not busy because of Olympic Games). I love it that this music of over fifty years ago still excites people who hear it for the first time.
1971... I was 5 years old and remember my Dad listening to this stuff as a kid. The parents bought me a Yes T-shirt before age 10. One of the most talented group of rock musicians ever assembled. They still sounds fresh in 2024, 53 years ago. Amazing stuff. Chris Squire's (RIP) bass is soo fkn good!
Oh YES, I agree! This is a great song in itself, but the live take on Yessongs takes it to a whole new level of energy and ecstatic joy! Bill Bruford is drumming like a young god, he was 21 years old at the time I think.
I used to listen to this album every night for a while. That was 50 years ago and I still love it. I love the part in the middle of this song when 2 things are happening at the same time, then builds to a crescendo. Amazing song, amazing band, glad you did this one.
Lovely reaction - thank you! I haven't listened to this in a long long time. So with your help it was almost like hearing it again for the first time. I didn't know what was coming next....until it arrived,
The first song of YES that took my breath away making me a lifelong convert during their first live US tour in 71 when I was 15. There is nothing like 70's YES and never will be again! You still have so much more to experience down their cosmic spiritual rabbit hole
Ladies and gentlemen YES the greatest show on earth. Next time you listen to Perpetual Change, think of it as a waltz 1 2 3, 1 2 3 ✨️🎶🙏🎶✨️ Wonderful reaction warms my soul. YES has the divine in its music
Nice CC!! Such a unique piece for sure. The shifts in tempo with Yes kind of come suddenly many times. Appreciate you both delving into 70's and late 60's on occasion. Good vibes to you both!
Setting off a Yes track/album is like a fresh trip down the rabbit hole into Wonderland each time. All you can do is take a breath, clear your busy mind the best you can, and go with the flow... wherever the journey is going after all.
YES!! Nothing like them in the world!! 45 years after first hearing them I still can't go a day without them!! Keep listening, the more you do the more you will fall in love!! 😊
"At one peculiar point I see, with one of many ones of me." I first experienced this song in 1979, when I was 16. It quickly became my favorite song. This line is one of the many reasons. It got me back then and it still does so many years later.
Lovely reaction from both of you, the early "yes songs" live version is pretty awesome for the early 70's, you have a long journey in front of you, from music that is behind you, in age terms, but you will have much joy, thank you both.
Great reaction from you two, welcome to the Progressive Rock genre, some other fabulous bands out there to listen to, a great era of music, happy listening
I loved this reaction. You two made me feel like I was 13 again listening to this song for the first time. I realize now this is the song that started my obsession with this band. I saved all my money and bought a keyboard and the 'Yes Phone Book" aka the Yes Complete songbook and taught myself to play I love the way this song weaves themes on and out like classical music, using catchy rock riffs and vocal parts played by musicans at the top of their game.
You're absolutely right. My mind wandered off to Yes and the older Genesis, two of my favorites from the day. My mid to late teens were filled with these bands that the Couple are covering, and it's good to see the younger generations experiencing and enjoying them as we did.
For me this song is about the pride of mankind, and how small we are really, not only in the universe but even on the earth. And admitting and embracing that is a source of joy.
YES, one of their BEST! Perpetual Change should be part of ALL cultures in order to progress forward with positive changes. Excellent analysis you two are very smart and observant. Thank You!
They best thing about YES is that you can never guess whats coming next, in a song. Its never what you expect and always better than anything you can imagine.
A few years back, I saw Yes, with Jon Davison. They were doing this album, CttE, and Gft1, and up to this song, I thought I was just looking at some old guys reliving their glory days, and once they came to the big break in this song, it hit me like a ton of bricks. The magic came back, and the concert ended too quickly.
I loved this reaction. I was in my late adolescent years in 1971, and one of my friends had this album that had just been released. That first listen was like entering into a whole new universe of music. It's weird thinking now that I was, at such a young age already into Led Zeppelin, etc etc etc, and how that music is STILL fresh every time I listen all of these years later. I'm truly ecstatic that young people are discovering this music of my era so many years later, and that gives fresh energy and meaning to the music for myself, instead of just thinking of it as purely nostalgic. It's really cool to share this experience across generations. It's really a fantastic "thing".
Ah, the joys of progressive rock. Just listen for a few minutes, and you'll get a different song, a few more, and another one. Pink Floyd, Yes, Kansas, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer to name a few. All in my record collection back in high school in the seventies.
YES! Greatest prog rock band ever. I'm 63 yo and "Fragile" and "Close To The Edge" are my favorites ones. My grandma went in tears listening Rick Wakeman on Keyboards "Exercepts of The Six Wives of Henry VIII" on "Yessongs" when she was about 80 yo. Very nice reaction Lady and Gentleman. 🤍🤍
I saw Yes in the early '70's and visually they were was as adventurous as they were musically. I saw them at Stafford Football Ground, it was raining A LOT! Stave Howe (guitar) refused to play electric for fear of electrocution so did the whole gig on acoustics and as they played so we (sitting/standing on the pitch) sank further and further in the mud. The set opened (as ever) with 'The Firebird Suite' and the stage gradually lit up from behind and there was a giant ladybird, a dragonfly (and I think a beetle) appeared. The ladybirds' wing-cases gradually opened to reveal the drum kit and the other insects metamorphosed into the rest of the band. I believe that the concept for the stage set was done by Roger Dean, the same guy who designed their album covers - but not 100% sure on that. They went straight into 'Yours is no Disgrace' at which point - we all forgot how wet (and drunk) we were, and they really pulled out all the stops. I've seen them about four times now, but, despite the weather, that was the best gig EVER!
Thank you for your excellent reaction Yes are true masters of progressive rock and Awaken is a great song that you may enjoy. It is from the Going for the one album which has some amazing songs. Keep enjoying yourselves and making these excellent reactions.
The songs "Close to the edge" and "Heart of the sunrise" by YES are two of their very best ever. The live versions on the album Yessongs are amazing so you should check them out next. You will LOVE both.
You've felt a tiny touch of what YES can do. Please react to AWAKEN by YES. It's a long song but worth every single minute. It's HEAVENLY. Thanks!! for the reaction. Best...band...ever.
Nice reaction! Always loved this song and feel that it doesn't get as much attention as it deserves. My advice (for what it's worth), stick with songs from The Yes Album and then Fragile before heading into Close to the Edge (as noted by others in the comments).
I had a great musical education at a very young age while listening to this album , You have a long ways to go with the bands that were around in this era like Deep Purple,, The Who ,, Black Sabbath Emerson Lake and Palmer ...Rolling Stones ..
"And You And I" & "Siberian Khatru" by Yes are most amazing songs by them. It's on the "Close To The Edge" album. Your heads will surely explode listening to those songs. One is very emotional and the 2nd one is upbeat.
@@stanleymerritt4722Thank you. You took the words right out of my mouth. For a split second I said to myself, “wait, did I miss a Yes album that also had that name?!?”
Please check out the live version on Yessongs! It has Bill Bruford still on drums, but Rick Wakeman is playing keyboards. The guitar solo at the end is my favorite Steve Howe solo of all time.
There are other songs from the YES album worth listening to then move on in order to Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales, Relayer, and Going for the one. You will not be disappointed and will have many songs to listen to.
Such a charming couple. I agree with the commenter who said wait a while before attempting "Close To The Edge". (Like suggesting novices jump right into "Suppers Ready" or a 20 minute "Dark Star").
Been listening to this album since 1971, it changed everything for me. First time I saw them was in 1971 at the Chatham Central Hall. Have been a fan ever since, I have everything they have ever done, “T shirts, most of witch don’t fit anymore, but will never get rid of them. I am lucky enough to have met them over the years. They are YES Enjoy the journey.
Awwwwww ....when music was music 🎶 so so lucky to be a teen in the 1970s ...we had it all ...pink floyd ..sabbath ..jethro tull ...springsteen ...and yes !! Grab a album ...sit on the floor ...headphones on and jam ALL day ..stand in line or sleep overnight to grab concert tickets for 8.00 a pop lol just magical years then ...oh yea and a joint made it even more magical lol
Elie and Carol, Thank you very much for this and your other Yes reactions! As I mention always, favorite guys after Zep. Feel more you hear, more you will love. 😊 Agree 100%, no CTTE yet. 'Yours is No Disgrace' studio version. Then the Awaken Live Birmingham mentioned. Then Wondrous stories and Turn of the Century. Then the ENTIRE Close to the Edge album. 3 tracks, 3 separate reactions, about 15 min per song avg. I have opinions about these gents, changed my life. Again, thank you both. Carol, you will fall in love with Jon in an entirely different way than Rob. More pure, no less passionate. -RR
First,,,shout out to Andy!!! Great song from a Great album. Probably of my top 10 favorite albums along side RUSH,,,,, A Farewell To Kings! You two put a smile on my face every time I watch. Guess I need to scan your channel and see what else you got and see if you are SUBSCRIBE worthy ⁉️ Have a Great Day!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
The continuing saga of Jon Anderson entered a new chapter in August 2024 with his latest album release, "True." Performing with the octogenarian vocalist are the incredible Band Geeks!
Exquisite taste! I had heard Yes tunes in their heyday, but listening to another reactor, I have fallen in love with their music....the chemistry and synergy of the players is true alchemy and exponentially greater as a whole. I agree with @roy....below. Start with the more accessible tunes. Keep going! Your musical IQ will grow with each listen!
If you want to keep up this thrill of being hugely impressed by YES, you need to _stick to the _*_studio_*_ versions of their masterpieces._ Why? Because as you heard in this song, YES' usage of "studio effects" (like the panning back & forth between the left & right stereo channels) was superb during this Uber-Classic Period of YES' recordings (their 3rd, 4th, & 5th albums: *The Yes Album, Fragile, & Close To The Edge).* Once you've heard the perfection of their studio creations, then sure go ahead & check out a live recording for the visuals you've missed, but the "concert hall" sound recordings were nearly always inferior to what they delivered on their studio albums. FYI, *Yours Is No Disgrace* & *Siberian Khatru* are two more of their Top 5 greatest masterpieces that will amaze you, both from this Uber-Classic Period of YES creativity...

VERY well said! Although I think Perpetual Change is my favorite on the album - just a little bit better than the others. 🙂
Steve Howe is so underrated and under appreciated by the masses it's almost criminal.
Pete Banks walked so Steve Howe could run
Very well said; his playing took YES to a new level. And then on the next album they supercharged the keyboards by replacing Tony Kaye with Rick Wakeman (Steve Howe: Peter Banks as Rick Wakeman: Tony Kaye)….and then they became the greatest band ever because the rhythm section was already at the highest caliber. Good advice
Great advice! Your recommendations follow chronological order, which is also the way the band developed in their music making.
So glad to see you appreciate Yes!❤
As you may know they are the #1 Progressive Rock band Ever!

Definitely do not do Close to the Edge early on! There are plenty of other Yes songs that are progressive rock but are great to listen to.
That soft jazzy guitar part in the middle always gives me some Parisian vibe, no clue why, just imagining a misty morning walking along the Seine (when it is not busy because of Olympic Games). I love it that this music of over fifty years ago still excites people who hear it for the first time.

Yessongs - This song - Live - MUST listen!! (not the movie version but the album version!)
YES
And the Base of Squire....wowow
Wait til they try the Yessongs of Yours Is No Disgrace- Steve Howe and the band- GO OFF !!
This is a truly epic performance.
Oh YES, I agree! This is a great song in itself, but the live take on Yessongs takes it to a whole new level of energy and ecstatic joy! Bill Bruford is drumming like a young god, he was 21 years old at the time I think.
I absolutely love you two! Your enthusiasm and positivity is infectious.... Thank you! XXX
Truth
I just love to see young folks JOY and LOVE for YES. The look on your faces' is so awesome!!! They were so amazing!
Steve, Chris, and Bill laying down some sweet jazz styling in the middle section
I used to listen to this album every night for a while. That was 50 years ago and I still love it. I love the part in the middle of this song when 2 things are happening at the same time, then builds to a crescendo. Amazing song, amazing band, glad you did this one.
I saw this band at MSG three times. This song, and especially the bass guitar and organ notes, shook the whole building.
Lovely reaction - thank you!
I haven't listened to this in a long long time. So with your help it was almost like hearing it again for the first time. I didn't know what was coming next....until it arrived,
I saw YES four times during the 70's and 80's, and each concert was very different from the others. Extremely talented!!!
The first song of YES that took my breath away making me a lifelong convert during their first live US tour in 71 when I was 15. There is nothing like 70's YES and never will be again! You still have so much more to experience down their cosmic spiritual rabbit hole
Pretty good for a bunch of guy who weren't 25 years old. This stuff was done over 55 years ago
@garyrausch1184 Jon Anderson turns 80 in Oct and is still doing YES tunes with the Band Geeks. It's brilliant
I know these songs for over 45 years; I know them by heart. As will you 50 years from now (God bless!).

Magic. My first YES Album, in 1971. I still have my original.

Love your reaction you have no idea what awaits you with Yes the greatest band that has graced this planet.
Setting off a Yes track/album is like a fresh trip down the rabbit hole into Wonderland each time. All you can do is take a breath, clear your busy mind the best you can, and go with the flow... wherever the journey is going after all.
YES!!! The greatest band there ever was or will ever be! Keep going, lots more masterpieces of theirs to hear!🤩
You guys are great! Thank you! YES is my heroes since early 1970. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.

The word that best describes the compositional vibe is Ambitious. The mastery of their instruments conveys casual excellence. It is music as art.

One of my favorite yes song.
Glad to see you both enjoyed it. It is like your brain is getting a very nice massage.
That bridge is sick. Brufords hands are playing the quick complex rhythm, and his feet the slow simple rhythm.
I friggin love this song! Barely any reactions to it, so thank you very much :)
That there is a must have album in anyones collection🤘❤️
I love the way the bass and drums come in here. Perfect. Never get tired of this. Still the best band I've ever seen.
Why did YES create such abstract, complicated, musical compositions? Because they could.
Perpetual Change. That is a perfect description of Yes Music. 🙂
You're absolutely right. My mind wandered off to Yes and the older Genesis, two of my favorites from the day. My mid to late teens were filled with these bands that the Couple are covering, and it's good to see the younger generations experiencing and enjoying them as we did.

Best band, ever. Period.
i've seen Yes live many years ago play this entire album. I was so great
Please have a look at Yes - Awaken - Live in Birmingham 2003.It is a bit long but I think it is a masterpiece.Thank you both and stay safe.
See it in concert like I have in the 70s was something to experience.
This originated in the early 70's and I immediately fell in love.
Very nice reaction from you😘, I enjoyed it again, thank you.

Ah, the joys of progressive rock. Just listen for a few minutes, and you'll get a different song, a few more, and another one. Pink Floyd, Yes, Kansas, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer to name a few. All in my record collection back in high school in the seventies.
Guys--- listen to this entire album. Every track is well worth your reacting to! :-) T
I like how they can go from quiet folk to rock and roll to full out prog in the same song!

The songs "Close to the edge" and "Heart of the sunrise" by YES are two of their very best ever. The live versions on the album Yessongs are amazing so you should check them out next. You will LOVE both.
Sacrilege, I know, but the best recording of "Close to the Edge" absent nostalgia is from Symphonic Live.
One The Best Tracks From This Record...
You have to hear the live version of this!!!!!!!!!!!
The last song you hear from Yes usually becomes your favorite. BTW The live version on YesSongs is top tier!
You've felt a tiny touch of what YES can do. Please react to AWAKEN by YES. It's a long song but worth every single minute. It's HEAVENLY. Thanks!! for the reaction. Best...band...ever.

My favorite Yes album has always been "Wind & Wuthering". It did not have the commercial tracks but was excellent.
That's Genesis. 😇
@@stanleymerritt4722Thank you. You took the words right out of my mouth. For a split second I said to myself, “wait, did I miss a Yes album that also had that name?!?”
NO 😂
Very insightful reactions!!!
Great reaction . This is my favourite Yes album 👍🏻
Their greatest piece of music is 'Close to the Edge', but this one easily makes my Top 20. Possibly my Top 10 YesSongs.
CTTE is a 'Sacred Cow '
Doing a great job. I subscribed!
They are YES
Enjoy the journey.
It's massaging my brain
No truer words ever spoken😀✌️
Really enjoy your reactions, especially to music I grew up listening to in the 1970s. More Yes, please!
Elie and Carol,
Thank you very much for this and your other Yes reactions! As I mention always, favorite guys after Zep. Feel more you hear, more you will love. 😊
Agree 100%, no CTTE yet.
Maybe my favorite track off this album, because of their bringing in a new 'theme' and gradually intertwining it with an original theme.
Yip, they can blow your mind.
Inside Out, Outside In = As Above, So Below. Some Hermetic Principal for you right there.
i wish i could discover yes all over again.
Yessongs live album extended version is now the way to go.
Yes, the studio versions sound so much better than the live recordings from the '70s.
