Maybe the Bonnie just needed a few days for the electrics to really dry out as well , or it was sulking after you left it out outside for week in the rain. I think you have to show it more love ❤
I really think you’re spot on with this. Leaving the bike out in the rain was more damaging than I thought it’d be😳
One of my most favourite places. I lived (until recently) about 45 minutes away and visited regularly.
My wife and I went to Rye back in 2016, such a lovely little place steeped in history.
That expression of joy when the bike started is one we've all experienced. Thanks for the trip to Rye and the history and stories as always.
Great video and what a beautiful place. Thanks again 🎉
Thanks for the little travelogue Freddie. l enjoy the short glimpses of Olde Worlde England...Such a contrast to what we currently view on news media of discontent and anger...
I have to say Freddie, Monika's filmiing and editing skills are second to none, people do ot realise what a skillset it actually is,
You are super lucky Freddy that the start wasn't fried! glad the Bonneville is back on the road :) might need to get a cover for it if you leave it outside
Hello Freddie,Monica Another stunning video with so much interesting content. Freddie make sure that the starter motor isn't still engaging ! This is what flattened the battery not the running for 20 minutes, get a new starter relay and charge the battery 😁
Good old Bonnie, it didn't want to be replaced 😊
Fantastic beer in the mermaid too.
Freddie, Rye is one of our favourite towns to visit. We live in Seaford which is also lovely but doesn’t have the history of Rye.I am glad it was just the battery now get those badges changed.
Hi Freddie great content as usual glade the bike is OK. Good ro see Rye also my favourite place like it the first time I went there. Seeing as you where down these parts next time you should come to Margate and see this part of the cost. Hope you have a good weekend regards Martin
In a comment on the last video someone mentioned your starter was going for that 20 minutes which ran the battery down. I agree I heard it as well. Hopefully the starter is ok after that too.
A butterfly dont make a summer, the bike is old and u dont like wrenching if it works now sell it to someone who likes it.
Second the battery should not run flat after 20 min of idle, perhaps a charging issue? Check with a volt meter if it charges ok. Should make aruond 13,4 to 14,2 volts at idle with lights on. If not the rectifier is shot.
Glad to see the Bonnie lives to fight another day but for god's sake Freddie buy another hubcap for the Fiat, it's seriously doing my OCD in! 😮😜
You forgot to show the bikes that are always parked at rye :)
would it not be easier to get your tank sprayed black
What, no maintenance 😂
Sorry had to laugh at your face when the bike started . The fact that the head lamp comes on when you power up the bike doesnt help. Modern bikes need a min voltage of arounf 12.5 v even run never mind start. Good news for you i would purchse a new battery just incase .Winters here and the cold can flatten batterys . You dont want to get stuck away from home. Great stream as per. Thanks.👍👍👍
As a motorcyclist I love that content. But I also love the historical travelogue stuff. Monica's videography is amazing. She has a good eye.
As a precaution Freddie I would spray all the handlebar switches and the ignition barrel with WD40 or similar. Using the thin pipe attachment. I think the problem was water was shorting your electrics. It may well have dried out now but by spraying you will prevent future corrosion within the terminals. Also take off side panels and spray there too.
Lovely video of Rye! 👍
Or even better use ACF-50
@@f19ash Great for bodywork but maybe a little bit too viscous for switch contacts?
@@JLOSTAFF1 “ACF-50 (Anti-Corrosion Formula) was originally designed to protect aircraft from existing and new corrosion and is now available to motorcyclists. Aviation products have to meet rigorously high standards and ACF-50 not only meets these but has been awarded Aviation approvals - MIL-SPEC 81309 types II and III which means it is 'approved for ferrous and non-ferrous metals, electrical systems and electronic components'. The US Navy carried out tests using ACF-50 on the jets on their Aircraft Carriers. They found that ACF-50 so significantly reduced the corrosion they had previously experienced they now use ACF-50 all the time!”
Freddie, I wouldn’t use WD40 on the switches or ignition. If there's a problem with any of those in the short term WD40 might help, in the longer term it'll just make things worse as it'll just attract more dust and dirt. Use Graphite powder on any thing that uses a key. For the switches use a can of compressed air and gently spray any gunk out of them
@@paulro4I have to disagree. Been using it for years and years on motorcycle switches. I’m 64 and never had a problem. The switches are covered so no muck should enter. I appreciate we all have our thoughts on what’s right and wrong. I can only base my advice on my trouble free experiences?
Freddie needs his own history series the hipster historian
I wonder.
Water.
After the run through all that water in Suffolk, and being left out in the rain on London, was the starter circuit shorting?
Now dried out.
Wd40 and dielectric grease is your friend.
Good to see you have found safe storage.
Ride safe. Happy travels 👍
Very good point re the Suffolk flooding- this could easily have been the issue now I think about it😳
Freddie i love your honestly about not wanting to work on bikes.
The Missenden Flyer, All Year Round Motorcyclist and Freddie Dobbs - all so different but Freddie - in your own way you put a great slant on the subjects you cover and indeed, Rye is a gorgeous place!
I wonder if the inhabitants of Rye were screaming about a climate crisis/emergency when the waters receded all those centuries ago?
They probably blamed it on the French. I think we should blame most things on the French.
I'm glad the battery was at fault - simple fix now. Thanks for taking us on a rambling tour of Rye, lovely time of the year - unseasonably warm :) Great autumnal colours, thanks too to Monika for her videography and editing and production. The lovely background music too!
In my 28 years of motorbike ownership I've had plenty of Regulator rectifiers break & I heavily suspect that the battery wasn't charging & that's why it ran badly on 1 & half cylinders & then cut out .
Before Freddie rides anywhere he needs to check the battery is charging while running or he mightl be paying a tow truck to take him home
Rye is so beautiful!
Check the charging of the Boneville. Get a voltmeter. Check the voltage with everything off, then start the bike. Check the voltage at idle and at higher revs. At higher revs it should read over 13 volts. If it doesn’t, you have a charging problem. If it does, you have a bad battery. They are expensive but I love lithium batteries. If there’s no parasitic drain they will hold a charge for a year. They typically weigh about 1/3 of a lead acid or AGM battery.
@@BlueRidgeRider I agree. It should be over 13 volts whatever the revs though
@@superelectic45I wasn’t sure about a 13 year old Triumph. A lot of older bikes could barely charge the battery at idle so I didn’t want him fixing a “normal” condition.
@@deanroberts2021 1 n a half cilinder?😂🤣😂🤣😂😂😂😂
In a country full of beautiful towns and villages Rye is a place that one would have to put near the top of the list. Another enjoyable production from the two of you.
Ohh Freddie, so glad the Bonneville started! I really thought all of the electrical system fried by being left in the pouring rain 🤔 Thankfully it has all come good & now be at peace. Lovely seeing Monika waving to us with the long shadows of available light👌 You both a shining stars in the universe 💫💫 Fix the tank & store it for winter😉
Thank you Steve! I really didn’t think it would start🕺
I used to have a 2009 Bonnerville which suffered from battery problems and finally i had to buy another one. Not from Triumph obviously but it is annoying that's for sure.
Freddie, get a multimeter onto the battery terminals with the bike running....sounds like the reg/rec or genny may have gone as its not charging the battery when running. You want to look for 14v when running, if its less than this you will just drain the battery every time you're out! Good luck!!
The Triumph Phoenix has risen again. Never sell it. Maybe buy it a friend?
Yes. It just wont quit.
The coffee shop building is literally older than America.
Freddie you should have gone up the church steeple. Amazing views from up there. Must admit one of the reasons i love your channel is you have an older bike and live with its problems like i do and most bikers do. Thankyou great channel.
Freddie, respectfully I think you’ve come to slightly the wrong conclusion regarding the battery drain on the Bonneville. In your last video the starter was continuously running and draining the battery during the 20 minute run. Happily, now that the bike is dried out all is back to normal and the starter survived. It’d probably be a good idea to redo the 20 minute idle reset.
Agreed and the very long storage will have been the start of the battery’s demise
Remember though that bikes do not charge the battery at idle, they draw. Charging only typically occurs at medium to high revs.
I swear you two should have your own mainstream tv travel show
Lovely video, thank you
Like you Freddie I’m not a fan of spannering on my bike. Unlike you I do it because it enhances the long term reliability of my bikes and I save a heap of money, plus I know that the job has been done properly. If you can afford a mechanic that’s great, but if you can do the basics that’s half the battle. Your Triumph is a good bike, treat it so.
Very sensible words- I’ll act on this👌🏻
To work on bikes, you need to know about basic mechanics, otherwise you are just messing about
@@the.communistI was self taught using a Haynes manual. Changing oil & filter, air filter, chain clean, lube and adjustment, brake bleeds and pad replacement, tyre pressures are well within the capability of anybody with reasonable skill and diligence. UA-cam itself is another wonderful resource for a home mechanic which I’ve used for bike and car maintenance too.
I replaced the battery in my Rocket 3 with a lithium ferrous phosphate unit... like 7 years ago I think. Still in perfect working order, and the bike is in a northern climate and gets parked up every winter. Solid investment. That said, even for lead acid batteries, having a trickle charger plugged in to the bike if it has to stand around for any amount of time makes a lot of sense; leave a connector cable attached so you can just fish the cable out from under the seat. Lead-acid batteries last best when they're topped up, as soon as they start getting low on charge they start sulfating up on the inside and just corroding to death basically. If the battery has failed you once - strong recommendation to discard it and buy new. Normal ones are cheap. Also, you may want to fire the bike up with the seat off again and put a multimeter over the battery poles and measure the voltage. If it's not over 14 volts, you may have a stator issue (under 14 volts, a 12 volt lead battery isn't charging).
🤣💪✊‼GO THE BONNY! IT'S ALIVE 😂🙏HOOORAY🥳
🕺🕺
All is well with the world when your bike starts on-the-button. I still think you should keep looking at newer alternatives, though! (Don't want to waste too much time spannering!)
Thanks Steve. And I do agree with you
Yes, we should do things to have clean water and air. But, the irrational global warming panic is putting unnecessary economic burdens on people worldwide. Throughout history, temperatures swing in cycles from warming to cooling that occur often and with remarkable rapidity. We are currently in a relatively cool period of the earth. For example, the years Medieval Warming Period 900-1300 AD average temperatures were warmer than it is today. The average temperatures for two hndrd seven ty MILLION YEARS, prior to the Pleistocene period (3 million years ago), were much warmer than current times.
Yes, the sea water has receded from Rye because the earth currently is in a relatively cool period in the cycle. The currently more water is accumulated in glaciers, ice and snow than a thousand years ago.
What a great way to start my Sunday morning, coffee cafetière all ready and a session watching Freddie Dobbs, looking forward to this one. ☕🏍👍
Coffee cafetière is good and so is tea teapot.
you should get a multi meter and check your Charging voltage should be around 14v at idle if you arn't getting that you may have a electrical issue
Once the engine is running, the alternator will charge the battery automatically, a 20 minute ride should fully charge thhe battery
Freddie, absolutely loved your reaction when the Bonneville started 🥳🥳🥳 Found myself letting out an involuntary “yayyyy” 😂
And I hope Monika is OK after the pasta sauce launched itself on her 🥺
Fantastic watching!! great music 😊
Second other comments about the electrics shorting out - I'd recommend ACF50 for your electrical contacts, as that's what it's designed for!
Will miss the riumph badge got quite used to it 😂👍🏻
Could have been water ingress that drained the battery and made it run like a bag of spanners!
The look on your face when the bike started was a picture, actually laughed out loud. I actually felt your joy. Know the feeling only too well. Had to change the ecu on my classic 500 after going through the whole electrical system with a toothpick.
There's no doubt in my mind you and Monica should get proceeds from the income England gets from tourism, You two are great embassadors for the beautiful places England has to offer. Thank you for another beautiful video🙏.
Freddie, your content is like none other on YT. Your laid-back delivery and Monika's photography make an incredible combination. So much fun to watch! Keep up the great work!
Another great video Freddie, often a ride-out destination for us from Hailsham. I’m surprised you did mention/film the harbour. A gorgeous fish and chip shop opposite the car park by the net huts. Beautifully filmed Monica. ❤️
That should have read “did not”
I could feel your relief when it fired up!
I know that feeling well 😊
Rye is more impressive and attractive place to live than London to me.
I can’t disagree with this
Bet property is expensive there.
What a great emotional response when the bike started. Brilliant!
Expectations are a great driver of emotion. Loved the visit to Rye 👍👍
I have a hypothesis about what happened to Bonneville. Exposure to rain caused water infiltration on the start button, and the evidence is that the motorcycle started as soon as you turned on the key. When keeping the motorcycle running for twenty minutes, it was not possible to notice that the starter motor was constantly being activated, consuming the entire battery charge. Don't give up on Bonnie!
already diagnosed in the previous video
@@richardbartlett6932 in the previous video people were saying the starter fried up, which isnt the case
Great video as always Freddie, by a great videographer…Monica.
Absolutely loved your totally natural reaction to the bike starting…it was a gem!
I hope that’s an end to the problems but have a slight concern that the bike is not charging correctly so do take your emergency starter with you in case the bike’s battery gradually discharges, and leaves you stranded!
Looking forward to the next one J
Pure joy Fred seeing the worry and anxiety gone off your face. I was sure you had drowned it in the puddles previously. I have a power pack and use it and lend it out great little tools. I also bought my 3 daughters one for Xmas last year, always buy them screenwash, plug in heated seats( abs superb). The battery probably died when in storage Fred. It only needs a slight sulphate and it’s the end soon. I would still give it a run to see if the rectifier is working to enable alternator to work. It could have been why cut out after 20 mins as rectifier not permitting charging. It wont affect starting. Put lights on etc to use all battery. My guess is battery is fried and you should get another. Can test with a voltmeter if battery clapped out. Those deep puddles worry me and don’t know where rectifier and alternator are on the bike. Run the bike with headlights on to see if they fully bright or dim and flickers. If bike stopped after 20 mins may not been charging and caused flat. Get Monica to follow u for 20 mins. Also buy some electrical cleaner spray ( silicone) great forcwaterproofing stuff if a tad messy
You see this is where my life always goes to pot !! If my bike had not started my jump pack would also have been flat !! Then moving on to the car that would probably not have started either for some amazing reason that the A.A. man/woman would have given me ... If I decided to go by bus then there would have been a strike etc etc etc ..
You seem to come out the other end what ever happens and I think that is really really cool so well done !!
Pleased about your battery.....mine is super sensitive...always on the Optimate charger.
WHY don't bikes have KICKSTARTS still !??
Great film as usual - great ride destination, beautifully filmed and narrated! It could be that idling the bike with the headlamp on for that time took enough out of the battery to lower the voltage so it turned itself off, so it maybe ok, if not, then it’s the charge/voltage regulator which is probably at fault🤞
Freddie, if you do decide the Triumph is no longer worth the trouble, I've spotted a low mileage 2018 Guzzi V7 Stone in black for £5.5K at Chris Hall Motorcycles in Doncaster (very reputable dealer)-- you could do a lot worse! If I wasn't already a Guzzi owner (1980 V50 Monza) I'd be tempted...
well done regard the bike 😆
Hi Freddie from down here in Australia..
Love your channel and seeing what England is really like..
When will we meet Monika from behind the camera??
Ohh and we've just started watching "Road to a Million ".. looks great..
Cheers
Mark
Monika does appear in several older videos, the Tenerife series, I think, and others.
Glad the Boonie is at least strating again. STOP riding through floods, STOP leaving it parked up with no cover, STOP neglecting it! Hope the ECU is sorted now. Cheers.
Thanks for the recommendation regarding “007 Road to a Million”. It’s brilliant and binge worthy.
brother, long time follower here and a fellow coffee lover. Please stop stirring the late art in your cappuccinos haha. That’s proper blasphemy my friend. ;)
Aye ,rye was left high and dry 1,000 years ago.........probably global warming............
Im pretty sure it died from overheating. I believe the dead battery was from water in the electrical components causing havoc, i.e. the starter motor running with only the ignition turned.
You simply can’t let an air-cooled bike idle for 20 minutes without any air moving over the fins to dissipate heat.
Heck, here in Texas, if you are stuck in stopped traffic for more than 10 minutes, its best to shut your bike off. (And yes, I know Texas is hotter than England) but the point still stands. In order for an air cooled bike to cool it requires air flow.
This comment refers to the algorhythm to support your videos. #12
Greetings from Zurich
Very nice Freddie. Exactly how my wife and I like to spend our days. Touring into history and food.
Use a multi meter when the bike is running and check your getting above 12v charge, I think the battery took a hit while waiting for the head gasket mate, how old is the battery?..still think you should bin the bike and get a Honda 1100 RS
2:26 Glad it started. I find it a pretty good looking bike. Remember, it took you through the desert, a quite unforgiving environment. And I do not know to what extent that trip contributed to the problems it suffered subsequently. Desert sand is quite an abrasive element. Anyway, back to Old Blighty, with the inherent charm that comes with it, rain or no rain. And sometimes, just to boost moral, glorious blue skies. What more can you ask?
Cheers.
It is true, Zacharia- the problems genuinely did start from Morocco😳
How do you always manage to find Britain’s most quintessential locations?
Forget Bradshaw's Handbook of 1863, with your location knowledge and Monica’s photographic skills you should be writing Dobbs’ quintessential guide to Britain by bike. Now there’s a best selling in the making… 😊
What a beautiful spot. Instantly looked at houses for sale in Rye (from Australia!!!!!!!) as I'm sure others did. Plus watching the 007 Road to a million, thanks for the tip. Glad bike is ok too and hope the pasta sauce cleaned up !
So glad that the Bonneville started. You're way too young to be even considering the Classic 350! 😂
Maybe the bike just dried out? Odd that it made some never before heard sounds, water ingress? You get to know what sounds to hear pre start up.
Didn't think the engine ticking over for 20 mins would completely flatten the battery? Oh well let's see how it goes, put together a plan 'B' though it's a lot easier to sell a runner than non runner.
I'm from Brazil and I've been following your videos for a while, and man, I really like your videos!
My t100 is black. With black wheels! I think you're buying the same
Starting and just idling possibly didn't 'excite' the alternator (stator) sufficiently to start a charge to the battery. Idling with headlamp and rear lamp may result in a steady discharge of the battery
Freddie, you've been on several journeys, any plans on coming to the states? Motorcycles in all directions. All kinds to, not just Harley Davidson's
Love your videos Freddie. And I'm glad your bike started, but I'm concerned that the bike's charging system is failing. I would have someone check out the charging system. It may be the problem was the wet, but I wouldn't trust it on a trip until I had it checked.
Freddie, if we listen to the Global Warming people, you would think the sea would rise and come back to Rye. Rye doesn’t fit the narrative. Very glad you fixed the
Bonneville !! A battery is less expensive than a new bike !!
Glad the Bonnie is OK again. As others have said, a good spray with wd 40 around the switches and starter solenoid would be wise! I still think the problem started after you went through those floods. 👍
Very good point, you should really stay clear of large amounts of H2o Freddie, oh yeah and if you must park outside use a cover 😊
Am I the only one who considers my motorcycle a vehicle? If it cannot handle the rain, even torrential one, without cover then there is something wrong with it that needs fixing.
@@MaaZeusrain isn't the problem. Driving through deep water is the problem.
I bought one of those battery packs from Halfords.. It melted.
Pretty sure they withdrew them from sale...
So happy the old Triumph decided to start Freddie. She’s not a new bike anymore. Things are gonna happen. Ya got to take a deep breath, and figure it out. I’m not really versed on new Triumph, but I just don’t think the battery is the problem. Something else is or was going on there charging system? Computer? Something? I would get at least the charging system checked. I hate to be downer, but it’s gonna suck even worse if decides not to start when you least expect it. That little town of Rye is pretty cool. I’ve been to Rye New York. But Rye in England is much better.
I always carry the Noco GB40 for exactly the same reason. And hope never to use it.
Always enjoy your vids. Somehow I think you two could make a slice of toast interesting viewing.
Hi Freddie. As others have said, the reason the battery went flat because the starter was engaged all the time it was ticking over. I would douse the switchgear in something like wd40 and keep dry over the winter.
The 20 minute idling reset won’t work for your triumph. You don’t have an ECU for fuelling as you are on caburettors rather than injection. 🎉
2010 injection model
Rye is indeed lovely, we visited it back in 1999. They make lovely porcelain there and my home’s street number plate comes from Rye 😁
Love this place, try to get here as often as possible. Did you know the author John Ryan lived here, he wrote Captain Pugwash.
Man...Rye looks amazing. I'd sure love to explore all the nooks and crannies of that little town. Good to see the Bonnie back on her feet. You should test to see if the charging system is working properly. A battery shouldn't go flat with the bike sitting there idling. You need a multi-meter but it's a pretty simple and quick job.
More motorbike stuff please fred …pastries and Tudor buildings ain’t my bag
Love Rye not just the old town, I visit the nature reserve round the corner with its cool WWII pillbox, great fish and chips
I really respect you sticking with one bike despite trying several as well as possibly being able to just change to a new one. There’s something special about having a close relationship with only one bike.
I do love the Bonneville- so many good times with it🖤🏍️
Absolutely, How many times have we thought 'Your gonna have to go' then lived to regret that decision. l know l have..
You're a living advertisement for Triumph. 😅
Putting a jump pack could mean the alternator is not charging or the reg/rec has failed, get a cheap meter to test or go to Halfords and ask them to check before buying a new battery. It should show around 14. Something dc volts going into the battery both systems can fail with age, not a difficult fix to do yourself.
