I actually made this engine a Thomas OC. He's called Dick. A big, pompous engine, full of himself, loves passenger trains, but hates freight trains. He sees himself as the future. Something like Gordon and Diesel mixed together.

Am wondering why, Lionel didn’t go with an O gauge size battery operated product. They had everything in place, track, accessories, rolling stock, etc.

Why are you trying to add a decoder in this? There's much better quality sets than this out there. Besides, I'm not even sure dcc is even possible in a set like this.
