To answer a few questions: *Why no helmets?* It was an overconfident taunt by Tyranth's character, implying he felt he could beat my character without that protection, to which my character matched his confidence by taking off his, this also justified most of the choreography as that meant we were striking for each other's exposed heads *Why no gloves?* For more control over our swords, it was a hot day and our hands would sweat in them a lot affecting the feedback we would feel in the handles compounding the restricted feedback from gloves to begin with. We also trusted each other enough to be safe. We’re very experienced by now with many years practice and knew we were both good at pulling our strikes when we saw the other missed a block. We weren’t actually trying to hit each other, just to make it appear that way, and added with our extra caution we didn’t have a single injury. *How long did it take you to film?* Transportation to site, set up and b-roll filming establishing shots and pack up consumed most of the time, taking a full day to film the whole thing. We actually only had 2 hour’s time to film the combat portion of the short film, as well as planning the choreography. Yes, we choreographed and filmed the combat portion in only 2 hours. *Was this dangerous?* Yes, we did this with fully weighted steel swords and knew it was a risk. They are blunt trainers but can still break bones and crack skulls. Only attempt things like this if you are very experienced swordsmen. We would have preferred film grade rubber props or aluminium stage blades, but they cost a lot and we didn’t have time to source them either. Larp swords look too fake and floppy. So steel was our best option and it did enhance the quality of the film. The blades clashed with perfectly realistic weight, speed, and sounds. Yes, it was more tiring and dangerous, especially without head of hand protection, but as I said, having the experience meant we could pull it off without injury. *Do we think it’s perfect?* No, there’s a lot we know we can do better if we had more time and budget, but overall we’re still very happy with it.
I was: WHY ARE YOU TAKING OFF YOUR HELMET!?!?!? And then I saw Tyranth's character: Oh. Story reasons, I guess. And then I read this comment: Oh. Story reasons, indeed.
With those two versions out now, it stands the question... who is the winner? I think it's unambiguously clear - we as the viewers. Thank you for such a great fight scene!

Dude this was actually great. I’m a mixed martial artist, and I love that little point where it was clear both parties were getting tired, the pace slowed down, and the attacks got more sloppy. What won the duel was very obviously that last burst of energy Shad had, after which he was clearly exhausted. That was very very accurate to a real fight, regardless of whether it was swords or hands being used. Again, great short film.
Blunt swords or not, the fact that you're not wearing helmets or gauntlets and swinging with a good amount of force was very impressive and definitely made the whole combat very compelling ! I'm glad no one was hurt ! Well done both ! 👍
I'll make the same comment I did on Tyranth's channel. The clinch at 3:25 was my favorite part. Watching a realistic clinch where the combatants actually continued to fight and try to gain advantage instead of just standing and staring at each other for 30 seconds was really refreshing
There was also standing and staring each other in this but crucially not _during_ the clinch but instead during the less intense moments - as it should be! Hollywood take notes!
The sword bind was the coolest thing here. That's something you rarley, if not never, see in a movie sword fight. I know you added it for that reason, of course. It worked really well!!
Very well done! The flurry of attacks being blocked and countered the back and forth, only with a much more real feel. Hollywood tends to forget that injuries to the arms and hands can be fight ending. In this scene, we can see that each combatant is putting forth their blades and not trying for overly flashy moves for the sake of cool- while making sure they don't lose a hand in the process. The slash through the midsection on Tyranth being none effective due to his armor, was a really nice touch. In Hollywood, a butter knife would cut through a tank, but not here! Well done, guys!

This was AWESOME! I was just going to comment that, say Tyranth needs one on his channel but I’ve seen the pinned comment, and there needs to be a fight scene autopsy which is the most liked comment. Absolutely crushed it all round
This was absolutely wild. The targeting of the blades was VISIBLY at the opponent. It was striking how different it was from the mid-air strikes I'm used to. I didn't expect it to be that significant a change. The slow-down at the dodge for the wider neck strike was lovely. I'm thrilled to see that the armor was actually effective. The thing is that there was quite a lot of blade to blade contact with no body targeting, as well as some continuity errors in the cuts, hopefully he gives the fight a fair, unbiased commentary in the autopsy, it will be a great watch.
@@its_dey_mateyeah the cuts to do a flourish were silly. Just cause you don't show the person there doesn't mean they're not there to take advantage. And I was griping about the lack of grappling towards Tyranth’s version, but man the grappling here with the finish was cool! Well done you great lads! Really liked how Tyranth’s version had him winning via being younger and having more brute force to pressure Shad into a bad place to lose, while Shad’s version relied on more skill with the veteran vibe he’s giving off.
I've been wanting to see something like this from Shad for so long, and I love the fact that it's finally happening. The early teases from the swordplay already looked super clean and well done, and I can't wait to see this in its full glory. Although I think Shad should wield the bec in this. You know... for science.
Honestly, I wasnt expecting a ton given all the talk of hollywood type quality and choreo and everything, and the size/budget of these channels. But I have to admit that was very very cool. The camera work to really show off the subtlety of that first bind and switch of angle was really impressive. Nicely done, guys!
My money was on Tyranth! Shad made me lose $20 to my wife!! Thanks a LOT, guys!! This fight was pretty EPIC!! You two did BOT disappoint!! except the liss of the 20. 🗡🛡🗡🗡🛡
I think what I found quite interesting was the slightly different ways they actually used a sword. Tyranth seemed to 'steer' the sword with his back hand on the pommel in a way, most of his control seemed to be with his back hand, and his body behind it. I don't think I've really seen that before. Shad led with his upper hand and the blade itself.
My favorite part is when Tyranth draws his katana and Shad discards his long sword, knowing full well that it has no chance against the legendary katana, and whips out his nunchaku. So Epic.
Shad however predicted such a move, and pulls out the wierd scorpion-looking-mall ninja-weapon-thing, and uses the advantage of the enemy not knowing the way this weapon is supposed to work (he doesn’t neither but that’s a problem for later)
Love the variant edits for each channel! Reminds me of the 60's King Kong vs. Godzilla when they edited Kong winning for the western release, and Godzilla winning for the Japanese cut.
Loved it! It's not perfect, but given the fact that you had only 2 hours to choreograph and film the fight, it's AWESOME! I also prefer this ending to the ending on Screentested. And not just because Shad won, but also because it was a more interesting and original finishing move.
I felt a lot more tension from this than any sword fights one could see in modern media, reminds of the movie The Duellists. There's that heft with every move and the risk of actual injury (seeing that those were real steel swords). There's also the breaks in between where the combatants step away from each other, with occasional sword flourish, which lends another level of realism -- actual combat is tiring (again, especially when swinging actual steel swords). Great short, now I'm off to watch the alt cut.
Both versions are engaging and fun to watch. I'm constantly amused by the fact a few australian dudes routinely outperform Hollywood when it comes to sword scenes. These and Tyranth's Old Republic lightsaber fight he did with Nate are spectacular.
The parries and instant counter attacks look awesome, it just shows that you can do entertaining sword fight scenes while still keeping it practical. I also love the armors, especially Tyranth's with the fur.
I love the fact that you used sword binding for something practical like Tyranth using his mass to strike Shad with his side and possibly put him off balance.
When the eragon series comes out, I hope you will be a choreography writer! It would be so cool to finally have a good mainstream new series with great choreography!
That's an aspect of swordplay I've never seen in any movie- how the flex of the blade can add an element of danger. Every swordfight I've seen (longswords, broadswords, katanas, rapiers, darn-do, etc...) featured rigid clangy swords that never bent or dulled. Well done, lads!
2:42 - Anyone else wince at the strike to the hand? Glad everyone's safe but also makes me curious why it's so rare to see blows to the lead hand and arm in the movies when they're the closest target.
Because that’s a good way to injure the actors hands and normally it’s less exciting (to moviemakers) than big strikes to the head. But also, we do see hand hits! Star Wars has two infamous hand hits with Luke and Anakin both losing their hands
Wow! With real swords!!? That was amazing! Noticing the "tip guard" actually hightened the sense of risk! Seeing real armour actually work against a slash was breathtaking! The final blow was brutal! My only suggestion would be to leave in the panting and sweating, as well as the hand cuts that looked inevitable during the last entanglement, but this is just me seeing perfection in your brilliant work! Thank you!
Imagine what you could do with a studio budget and a team of camera operators plus practical and editorial VFX. This was legitimately a better choreographed swordfight than anything out of Hollywood recently.
Looks like Shad really _thrusted_ Tyranth into a dangerous situation. He tried to _steel_ himself, but Shad beat him to it. He wanted to make sure he got the _point_
The fight choreography amd authenticity is better than in... most movies, can't say more because I didn't watch all of them. Everything else could have been improved with professional camera team, plot writing team, montage team and other things big film companies have access to. Good job.

Amazing work, God bless you guys!
Lord Shad has arisen
Love the idea that you had different ending for each chanell!
When the eragon series comes out, I hope you will be a choreography writer! It would be so cool to finally have a good mainstream new series with great choreography!
And so is crowned King Shadius, first of his name, lord of the Shadlands.
Okay, this was every bit as cool as I expected! Great work, both of you!
Man, we need more sword fight like this in media
That's an aspect of swordplay I've never seen in any movie- how the flex of the blade can add an element of danger. Every swordfight I've seen (longswords, broadswords, katanas, rapiers, darn-do, etc...) featured rigid clangy swords that never bent or dulled. Well done, lads!
Super fun, thought it had a lot of personality 👍
Shad is singlehandedly crushing all modern Hollywood films' choreographies
Good stuff! Always good to see Nathan again.
It's so obvious these guys know exactly what they're doing, and they do it well
2:42 - Anyone else wince at the strike to the hand? Glad everyone's safe but also makes me curious why it's so rare to see blows to the lead hand and arm in the movies when they're the closest target.
Because that’s a good way to injure the actors hands and normally it’s less exciting (to moviemakers) than big strikes to the head. But also, we do see hand hits! Star Wars has two infamous hand hits with Luke and Anakin both losing their hands
Proof that realistic sword fights can be amazing. Hollywood should learn.
4:12 might be the most sacrilegious thing I've ever seen Shad do, lol.
I WISH we had fights coreographed like this in movies/tv shows nowadays
Looks awesome! Can't wait!
Thank you!
Better choreography than an AAA movie
Imagine what you could do with a studio budget and a team of camera operators plus practical and editorial VFX. This was legitimately a better choreographed swordfight than anything out of Hollywood recently.
Very good, I geeked out on the binding scene.
This is my favorite vid on the channel now, it looks like you both had fun making it
Looks like Shad really _thrusted_ Tyranth into a dangerous situation. He tried to _steel_ himself, but Shad beat him to it. He wanted to make sure he got the _point_
That was awesome. Wow. I dont usually watch short films, but i want to see more!
I wanted to suggest another take where Tyranth wins, but it's already there :D Awesome!
The fight choreography amd authenticity is better than in... most movies, can't say more because I didn't watch all of them. Everything else could have been improved with professional camera team, plot writing team, montage team and other things big film companies have access to. Good job.
