  • The late Art Mikulak was the originator of the Mikulak Sedge. My favorite sedge or caddis pattern when trout are targeting large travelling sedge adults. Fish it static or make it wake as the trout dictate. Takes to this pattern are typically explosive.

Awesome tie Phil. I recently watched another tier make a "never sink caddis" that had a double wing of snow shoe foot hair. I told him it reminded me of the Mikulack Sedge. So I googled it and your tutorial was first in line. (lol it was already on my watch later so I put it on my "top water" playlist :o) I know I've tied this and the Stimulator before but this tutorial really opened my eyes on the techniques. (I've always thought both these flies had a good bait fish profile so I tied the MS using squirrel tail for the tail and wings and big bead chain for eyes with very good results :o) Thanks for this one, I think it's perfect and fun to tie. I bet the smallmouth would kill it too!

Hi Joe, thanks for taking the time to post your comment. I am pleased that you enjoyed the video. The Mikulak Sedge is my favorite stillwater caddis adult pattern. I will experiment with some of the variations you have suggested as well.
      Thanks, Phil

A great pattern down here in Washington as well as western Montana. A great tie, thank you so much for taking the time to tutor on the tread tension aspect.

Excellent stillwater pattern that's what we mainly fish in my area allot of stillwaters. Luv these large dry patterns. Looks like a real killer pattern.

I have tied this fly for years, after learning about it from your first book. I have found that changing the type of hook to 2X long dry fly hook such as a 1280 Daiichi hook greatly improved my rate of hook ups on the take. This is also true for Stimulators. This is one of my favorite flies as I have caught some of my largest trout on this dry fly. I also tie this with an off orange body for October caddis.

Fantastic pattern on South Park Colorado reservoirs tied in brown wing/orange body and tan elk/olive body. Thanks for the vid, Phil!

+Charles Loftis Thanks Chuck, it has also worked as a decent hopper imitation when tied in yellow.
      Thanks, Phil

Hi Eric, glad to hear the Mikulak Sedge worked for you. My wife and I did well with it as well earlier this month while down in Wyoming fishing Monster Lake.
      Cheers, Phil

One of my favorite large caddis patterns . I find UNI 6/0 a much better thread for tying this pattern than any of the floss threads.

Thanks, Uni 6/0 would be a great thread choice for this pattern.

Excellent pattern and tie Phil. I am going to show my ignorance, but I have only been tying for a little over a year, and I do know a dry fly from a wet, however, I don't know a still water fly from a river or stream fly. I can tie this fly because I have tied some of the Irish bumble flies with three wings on a smaller length hook. How do I find out what the difference is between a still water pattern and a river or moving water pattern?

No problem Sean, we were all where you are. You are just at the beginning of a great, life long journey. Dry flies float on the surface whereas wet flies are used beneath the surface as are streamers and nymphs.

I got that, I am wondering how to tell the difference between a stillwater pattern and a river or stream pattern.

Hi Sean it is not always easy and many times stillwater flies work on rivers and streams and vise versa. Generally stillwater patterns tend to be more soft and flowing as their is little current to animate the fly. Gaining an understanding of the food sources will also help as flies are often targeted at specific food sources and various stages of development within that food source. You can check out the entomology section of my website, www.flycraftangling.com for more information on the various food sources available in both rivers and lakes.

Hi I am trying to see if anything went haywire with the upload. I am having no problems viewing the video and we have had over 160 views so far. Very puzzling?
