Gender affirming care saved my life. It didn't just save my life, I'm now actually doing things with it. I just enrolled in college this year and only a few years ago I was a high school drop out. Before I got this care, all of this would have been impossible. It's sad to me that people just won't listen trans people and even scientists as well. The research is there. We know this stuff saves lives.
Thanks for the work you do Rachel. The bigotry, fed by misinformation, continues to propagate. Sad this is our society right now but as an ally, I’m pushing back.
There is plenty of reason to worry about gender affirming care. Only one side of the story is being told in this video. The American College of Pediatricians with backing from hundreds of doctors and researchers put out a statement calling on medical organizations in the US to change how they treat gender issues in children and adolescents. They called for a stop to the promotion of harmful practices of puberty blockers, surgeries and hormone treatments for children and adolescents who express distress over their biological sex. The Tavistock Clinic in the UK was shut down by the British healthcare system, the NHS, after serious concerns were raised over many years by several independent NHS whistleblowers because of the overdiagnosis and medicalisation of young people experiencing gender identity difficulties.
The US is a sh*t show, it sucks that this bigotry is being imported into our country. To be clear, receiving gender affirming care as an adult is hard enough in Canada, I can't imagine how difficult life with be for gender non-conforming youth in Alberta. And make no mistake about it, all of this politicking puts an intense strain on our mental health, doesn't matter if we're American or Canadian, younger, older, already receiving care, out or hiding; it's trauma. Rachel, thanks for acknowledging this strain with your message of support at the end of this video, and also continuing to report on these, and other LGBTQ+ issues, means the world🙏🏼
If (when) Poilievre/the "Conservatives" win the next election, things will follow the same path here. That's what happens when resentment, reactionary resistance to change, and facts-adverse delusional thinking (especially when labeled as "common sense") should take precedence over verifiable facts and critical thinking. And God forbid that uninformed assumptions of the past should ever be reexamined. The world seems to have decided that irrational fears, drastic over-simplification, willful blindness and wishful thinking are the superior approach to making the political decisions that will impact our futures for decades to come.
To be fair I suspect most of your audience knows these things, so its a bit like preaching to the choir. Of course if I knew of a way to get through to those afflicted with 'transgender right delimiting obsession' then I'd say it. I'm in a small rural town with several clearly trans persons working in pretty public industries and I've never seen a case of anybody even caring. And frankly the child who is afraid to tell their parents something probably aren't going to take the chance that NOBODY in their school is going to tell their parents. Schools need to run programs like "ok, so your parents are delusional, here's how you can prepare for 18.."
Joe Rogan spoke out when a trans-woman broke the skull of a biological female in an MMA fight. Biological males have a large advantage. He is sticking up for women's rights. Nothing wrong with that.
In future reports, could you distinguish between US and Canadian jurisdictions? It was the US Supreme Court, and US activists you cited in the first part of your report, not Canadian. I believe trans rights are human rights, but I also rail against Canadian populist politicians copy-pasting US ideologies as their own, because I feel it's something of a violation of Canadian sovereignty. Conflating the two jurisdictions, it lends a false legitimacy to the Smith government's (vanishingly small) ideological base.
Well, there WAS a picture of an american flag and she did say "Tennessee". I see your point, and I do usually tell conservatives that not only is Canada's supreme court different, but Pollievre himself barely pays lip service to such things. I think he was forced at one time to say "I think girls washrooms should be for girls" or something like that. Because if he doesn't know, he should, that the Canadian Supreme Court has specifically said that public washrooms are for the gender you are identifying as. So thats a done deal. But that doesn't mean that much, as over and over on social media I see conservatives saying "woke is over" and crap like that, meaning they will feel empowered when Pollievre is elected to be as big of a holes as we see in the states. I also don't think her base is quite as small as you think, I think conservatives very much are almost exclusively into gender politics and climate denial. Hell, in Alberta Smith promised a 20% income tax cut and then when elected discarded it. I never thought I'd see the day that tax obsessed conservatives would not be RAGING at a politician who promised a huge tax cut but failed to deliver. Meaning they were hardly paying attention and basically like her because she 'talks mean' to Trudeau and is way too interested in gender issues. And clearly doesn't know that this wont survive a supreme court challenge.
I think gendered bathrooms should be done away with. If you've never used one, it's an interesting experience, then it's just a bathroom after your first short panic.
@@MeatyZeeg Haven't most people used gendered bathrooms? Thats the norm. Most small stores just have one bathroom. For larger stores, so far its a non issue, the same way that amusement parks were preparing to make everybody wear t shirts after the supreme court ruled that women can be topless any place men are. Since canada is so conservative, or men so creepy, no women have really taken up that call, much to my and many others albeit creepy dismay. I do remember when they announced it, it was back when CBC had open comments and by far it was women who were objecting, but I don't think men were approving because of 'human rights issues' so much as 'hell yeah I can ogle' reasons.
I worry that a person’s opinions on transgender matters is being used as a litmus test. I consider myself very liberal socially. I support transgender civil rights. I support progressive sex education. When I was a high school teacher, I was active in our schools diversity’ club. But as a special ed high school teacher for many years before retiring, I simply cannot approve transgender surgery on minors unless they’ve been legally emancipated. I’m undecided on drug regime as well because I don’t think anything should be done to children under 18 that can’t be reversed. I’ve got no problems with how they dress or support themselves and I’m perfectly fine with letting students choose their pronouns, but I just think they are too young for irreversible medical options. I certainly approve of specialized counsellors for students like this as well. I’m agnostic on bathrooms. Adults who undergo transgender surgery should be allowed to use the bathroom of the gender they have transitioned to. In high schools, at least in the district I taught, there are enough wheelchair accessible washrooms for transgender students to use. Sadly, some of my friends no longer view me as a liberal for these opinions, but fortunately, my transgender friends don’t hold my views against me. If you use transgender issues as a litmus test, you’re going to be chasing away a lot of allies .
They don't do gender realignment surgery on minors. Not only are the prohibitively expensive for many adults (can cost in the ballpark of 20-30k in Alberta) and require at least a year of therapy. No doctor is going to actually do surgery on minors who is not old enough to legally consent. That is why they use the puberty blockers (which are proven safely used for decades and completely reversible... if they change how they feel) To delay the onset of puberty until they are old enough to make informed medical decisions for themselves as adults. What Danielle Smith seeks to do is block access to puberty blockers (even for kids with the consent of their parents) This will cause lasting and unnecessary harm from natural changes to their bodies from puberty, but Danielle Smith simply does not care about the harm she causes. You don't sound like a bad person, but saying things like "I simply cannot approve transgender surgery on minors unless they’ve been legally emancipated." suggests that you like most people really have not looked into this issue, because that is not actually happening. Kids don't have a random 30k lying around for GRS and therapy. Not to mention finding an amoral doctor willing to do surgery on a minor that cannot legally consent.
Who's asking you for medical advice and what is it you think you know that you know better than trans people and their doctors? Unless you have a degree in medicine your opinion isn't being asked for.
Geesh you can’t even get a tattoo until you’re 18. After a few years of anything goes a number of European countries are now starting to put age restrictions on transgender surgeries. Alberta is following suit.
In Alberta there is no law saying you can't get a tattoo under 18. Tattoo studios require it without government intervention because they aren't looking to try enter into contracts with children. So your example is incorrect. Lots of tattoo parlors will turn down work they don't feel right about putting on someone. Most people have morals even in tattoo parlors. I don't know if you know this or not but in Canada you are going to need a doctor to approve just about any medical procedure or prescription medication you might want and they will deny you if they don't believe it is the right choice for you medically. So thinking that the government needs to get between you and your doctor to keep you safe from the healthcare that you want is ridiculous. Imagine if you had your doctor, your psychologist, several other experts you have had to consult over several years, your family, and yourself all approving a medical procedure for you but the premier of your province, who does not even know your name let alone your situation, says no because they personally find it wrong due to their religious or political beliefs? When you trust a politician that tells you not to trust doctors or teachers because doctors and teachers are politically biased you really have gone over the edge into complete gullibility. Politicians are the last people you should ever trust.
