- A Bonus Birding video with me and Jason. We find a weird hybrid goose in Durham Region, Ontario. Later, we get some of our best looks at the Barrow's Goldeneye that has been staying around Whitby Shores in Ontario.

Good morning 🌅 to you from Hong Kong SAR. It’s so fantastic for you to see hybrid goose, Canada/Snow Goose Hybrid ! 😳
Last week, I had three ‘LIFERS’ : (1) Common Sandpiper, (2) Green-tailed Treecreeper, and (3) a FEMALE Daurian Redstart.
Though I had seen the MALE Daurian Redstart more than eight 8️⃣ years ago, this is my first time seeing the FEMALE.
Incidentally, quite a lot of Japanese birders on their UA-cam channels have seen a lot of FEMALE Daurian Redstarts during this winter season, as well as the Common Kingfisher.
Sounds like some fun birding! 😆
What a cool find! Who knew such a thing existed 🤷🏼♀️
Fantastic ! I’ve never seen a Barrows golden eye, Yet! I’m glad you are doing more videos, more for me to see. Birding from my couch lol.
My husband and I usually travel to Algonquin every summer but this year we have a permanent trailer spot in Dwight, just outside the park! We are very excited to see what birds are there. In the fall we had a Canada jay come continuously to our picnic table, while we were sitting at it! Wonderful. Can’t wait to see more of your videos!
Thanks Kim, I'll do these when I can. Much more time once there are more daylight hours after I finish work!
The location for your trailer sounds great! I should think you'd get quite a few warblers hanging around Algonquin in the summer and lots of other good stuff.
wow, that's very cool. Great sightings.
Thanks 🪿 🦆
This was a nice and unexpected addition and as always I learned some things. Saw my first Common Goldeneye just the other day with some way in the distance photos, so I need to find some closer views. Thanks
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
350 Bird Challenge service resumes on Thursday, but Jason and I will try to do some more of these more indepth videos on the occasions Sara is busy with work and the boys are out to play 😂
Good luck with your Goldeneye search. It's a fun time of year to see them, as they perform their head-throwing courtship behaviour.
An awesome video! So cool to see hybrid species in the wild, even if these birds don't count toward the challenge I am so excited for the extra videos!
Thanks Shayna. Roll on the lighter evenings so we can do more of this ☀️
Hi, on the Barrows...did you ever concider Digiscoping? Its a method of using your cell phone with a spotting scope, and the appropriate mount. You are basically getting a pic of what you see throught the scope. I know people who use it for long distance ID pics, it might be something to concider. Love your vids! Keep up the great work...and wheres Sarah??
Sara is at work on this day. Consider it a "bonus video" with the 350 Bird Challenge returning on Thursday, with all going to plan.
I've digiscoped a little when we first got the scope at the beginning of the year. My new lens and teleconverter give me closer views than the scope now, though. The scopes main advantage is that it can cover a wider area (wider field of view).
The “air-braking” twisting in flight is called “whiffling” as I’m sure you know, but it’s such a fun word I thought I’d add it!
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whiffling
No, I didn't know that word, but am always happy to learn! It sounds like an obscure Badminton term or something 😂
Good catch on both counts. I once found a hybrid mallard-American black duck near the mouth of the Humber River, but these hybrids are pretty rare. Still looking for a cackling goose whenever I see a flock of Canadas, but so far my luck is about like yours.
There's a hooded merg x common goldeneye hanging around, too.... between ashbridges and ttp. Haven't managed to find it when I've been in the area, but I see it being reported sometimes.
@@BritHikesOntario Wow, never heard of those two interbreeding - I'd love to see a picture.
macaulaylibrary.org/asset/405469531
@@BritHikesOntario Thanks. That is weird.
I visited this area last weekend, but I didn't find the hybrid (just a regular all-white snow goose).
Did you get pictures? Are you sure it is a Snow Goose and not a Ross's Goose? Spoiler alert, we were there on Friday and got a Ross's Goose which will be in Thursday's video.
Nice spotting of that hybrid goose! I saw one last year as well, a snow Ross’s goose hybrid!
Cool, do you have pics somewhere?
I do
In Quebec, we used to identify the Barrow's Goldeneye by the ''piano keyboard'' on the wings. I guess that will be your next target for the 350 challenge?
Piano keys. I like it!
We won't linger on the Barrow's, having just shown it, but will do a quick smash and grab as part of a bigger video.

What about the 350 bird challenge
I talk about it in this video.
Sara and I both have full-time jobs, so we can't always bird together. This is a bonus video and I'll try to do more bonus videos this year.
There will be two videos this week, including this one. 350 Bird Challenge video on Thursday.
@BritHikesOntario ok
Did you listen to his intro??
