Really great video, thanks for your help! In recording settings I can't change rate control - whatever I choose it sets CBR and rate control is fixed to 2500... can't change it either. What could be a problem? But thats only for recording, I can chanhe CBR and bitrate for streaming. Also, can't change CPU usage, it is fixed to veryfast, Profile and Tune - all of them are hardcoded and not available.
Thank you so much for this video! I just installed OBS yesterday and couldn't figure out how to record my screen. You saved me several hours of frustration.
DUUUUDE Thank you so much for showing this program! I spent hours trying to use Xsplit, Fraps and other software to record a specific windows and there were just too many issues, lags, black screens and the free version of Xsplit records audio in freaking mono. OBS is so much better than anything else out there, plus it doesn't ask to make any accounts to download/use.
Amazing thanks so much if I am recording video say on vlc anyway i can have full box up? like you do in your recording in mine it has the x etc showing and sides
Hey, thanks for the tutorial. I doubt I would've been able to navigate the settings menu without it, though I still have a small problem I can't figure out. The recordings are whiter than my computer's actual color output. I tried changing the color format to RGB to see if it would make the videos seem less washed out, but nothing seemed to change. Is there anything I can do to help this?
Know I'm a little late, but after I record and everything when I rewatch the video after exporting it. It lags. It's not because my computer can't handle it because the game runs seamlessly. Any help is appriciated.
Thank you so much! Very clear, but I have 1 problem and I would be making bangers, but I somehow have 2 screens instead of 1, and it only records 1 of the screen. Lets just say Theres 1 on the left and 1 on the right, it just records on the left, so it only records a piece of my screen, so please help!
That was an amazing video! Keep up the good work! There is just one problem I have that I can't figure out how to fix. When I try to record. It says Enconding overloaded! And it stops me from recording, how do I fix it? Do any of you know ? ;(
Sorry for my late reply. If encoding is overloaded, you should turn down the bitrate you are recording at. That'll fix the issue. However, the lower your bitrate, the lower the video quality of the video. -Austin
I did this too and when I did everything I too had a black screen... but instead of looking for someone to hold my hand I started trying to look for a solution myself and what do ya know I got it! Great video 🤝
hey, i'm trying to record csgo with obs & I did fallow all your steps correctly & still stuck with black screen when I record with game capture & have no problem to record with display capture. Do you know how to fix it ?
You just have to tinker with the setting a little bit, because mine was really laggy and low quality at first, but then it started to get better the more i change things and messed around. Im Recording Rocket League and am running at around 170-180 fps when i dont have anything else open apart from AlphaConsole, which doesnt affect my game. But when i have OBS open and recording, i get only around 140-160 fps, and sometimes i will get that once-in-a-while fps jump. To fix this, i tried two methods, one was turning down my settings in the game, and second was overclocking my GPU by around 10 percent. Although overclocking is bad for your GPU or CPU, its okay to do it casually, and obviously not by 50 percent unless you wanna wreck your system. I record around once a week, so i dont overclock too often for it to hurt my PC. But my suggestion for fps drops in games is to just turn your settings down in the game, or overclock by a small amount, not too much though. Great vid man really appreciate the help as i was a first timer with OBS Studios. Thanks heaps xD. Keep up the great work!
Hello! Um so when I output it to like save and about to like see the recording it’s just black and I can hear myself but I can’t really see the window it’s black
Thank you vry much. Been having an issue where my videos would be in the top right and not full screen after recoring. Now I can get back to recording.
Hey there im having a problem: when i record/stop recording and look at the clip its just black, i get the audio but its just black! please help! thanks!
for encoder i have the 2 choices x264 and NVENC H.264 which one should i choose i might just try both but if you see this then yea oh well probably would have tested already but
I did..it captures the game AC:ORIGINS at first and then after a few seconds it says: Encoding Overloaded. Try turning down video settings for faster encoding. Plz, help.
Having trouble. I'm in properties in >mode/capture specific win Change window>select game then select ok. Nothing happens. Just remains a blank screen. Why!
Yes, that editing program is Sony Vegas Pro 13. I just wanted to show that you can upload it straight to UA-cam OR edit it in an editing program first. -Austin
thank you for your prompt reply. i'm at the vega page looking at the software they have for sale and see three packages. 35 usd, 40usd, and 60usd. i think that as a beginner at recording videos that i want to post on youtube the smallest package might be fine, and if i get the illusion that i'm a REAL movie maker i can upgrade. and on the other hand for only 5 bucks more i get to burn my stuff directly to disk and a few other options. first i have to get OBS working. so before i buy any of those i am working out how to get OBS to record just the window of the game. right now if i run a game, black desert specifically here and i'll be trying fallout 4 next i have to capture the entire output to that video card, in this case the on-board video since it somehow refuses to see my nvidea gtx 760. it's good to have multiple monitors so that i can place stuff around and have the on-board video card running one of those monitors and the plugin card running the other two. i'm still working on it, and this video of yours gave me a few clues, so i'll continue. thanks for responding, and thanks for the video. i'll be looking at more of your stuff, and will subscribe as well. you're doing a good service here, and please keep up the good work.
Thanks for the subscribe! Just quickly wanna mention that there are a couple different versions of Sony Vegas. The one I’m using is Sony Vegas Pro 13. It costs at least $500 and I would consider looking into something free or inexpensive (or find a free download...) if you’re just starting to create videos. I’m pretty sure the versions of Sony Vegas that are in that $50 price point are VASTLY different from Sony Vegas Pro, so just make sure that if you are going to buy a video editing program, do a lot of research. I’ll be posting a review of an affordable, new editor on the market called Movavi later this week so feel free to check that out! -Austin
Hey man very usefull, i just have one problem, every bitrate from 2500-20000, but still my recordings are very laggy and doesn't have more than 1 fps, do you know why?
You can record anything with it. If it's a browser game, you can use the browser capture option to record the window. If it's a game that's installed on your computer, you can use the game capture option. This program is quite advanced. I've never found a program it can't record. There is an appropriate setting for everything. -Austin
- Can I use this to record a 4-5 hour webcast, to include the accompanying audio? I do NOT want to use my webcam or microphone, I just want to capture the audio & video of the webcast.
Yes. You should be able to use the window capture feature to capture any window on your computer (such as a web browser for your webcast). I recommend that you turn down the settings for your capture so that you record in a smaller format. When recording video game footage at 1080p and 60 fps, I usually record at about 1GB / min. If it's just a webcast, I'd recommend recording at 720p and 30 or 15 fps to reduce your file size. Just make sure that these settings work for you before you start watching the webcast! -Austin
I record my screen with OBS and my facecam with my camera. Then, after I'm done recording, I load all the files into an editing program where I synchronize the clips together and put my face in the top right corner. -Austin
I have tried this out a lot of different ways, and there are multiple games that I'm trying to record. When I go to game capture, however, and click any of the games, they don't show on OBS. The screen is still black. How can I fix this?
Make sure that preview is enabled by right-clicking where the preview should be and selecting enable preview. Also, to make sure that OBS is working, try using browser capture to see if you can record something other than a game. If you are unable to record an internet browser window, that means there is an issue with your settings. Then, you should try adjusting the video format or changing the video encoder (if you have multiple options) -Austin
Enable preview is on. There isn't an option titled browser capture, but display capture works. I can't figure out window capture; it doesn't seem to work either. If I go to output and change the encoder and recording format, nothing happens. Is there anything else I can do?
You can either: - add a webcam as a video source in OBS and move the video source into one of the screen's corners or - if you use an external camera like me, record from the camera and computer separately and put the clips together in an editing program like Sony Vegas. -Austin
It's working wonders for me. I can record 1080p with 60 fps ! Only issue is that for some reason, When I record, it doesn't fill the screen even when the game is full screen.
It was really helpful and a great video, although I lost you at 6:01 because my Minecraft wasn’t showing on the screen like yours was. It’s probably just my computer. But great vid notheless
If you want to record 2 separate windows, you'll want to setup 2 different window captures (one for each window). If you JUST record your mic audio, you will get a black screen. You will have to record a video source to not get a black screen... -Austin
HorsePlayGaming thanks, but I just want one big screen and not two. I tried looking where to remove the second one but didim't find ( sorry for being this bad, Im new to this :D)
To record your audio, you have to add an audio source under the sources tab. If you want to record your computer sound, add an audio output capture. If you want to record from a microphone, add an audio input capture. You may want to do a couple sample recordings to make sure that the right output is being recorded. -Austin
Alright so after some tinkering I got rid of that black screen, everything seemed all good. Except I noticed that when recording I either can only hear the game or myself. I tried raising the volumes of the mic and what not but like I said, it seems to be one or the other. Anyone know a way to fix this?
Hello again! I encountered an problem while I was trying to capture from Naruto Online game from Oasis mini client. After all the settings were done. I tried to record the game but the preview window don't show anything. It only record the sound. Why is that? I must say that I did everything like you but no image... Just sound... Can you help me? I used OBS 21.0.1
Try using a different video source to make sure the recording is working. Instead of game capture, try window capture (or browser capture if the game is a browser game - I've never heard of it before) and see if any other video sources work. Let me know if that works! -Austin
I've already tried on window capture. - the same result. On the preview is a black screen. The video is a black screen with sound. I run as administrator also, I've closed all other capture devices from task manager, (for not entering in conflict). None of the sources works - all black screen. I've investigated the issue on youtube and I found out is an bug. But the fixes didn't worked for me. Be sure that I understand your tutorial very well but this is beyond my comprehension. If you got an answer for the black screen bug (pls. search on youtube) please tell me. P.S. I even reinstall the program.
No matter what source I use, the same result - black screen + sound. This is a specific laptop problem. laptops have 2 video cards. OBS must run on Nvidia or whatever and the game on the same grafic processor. In my case NVIDIA GT 630 M. This can be changed in NVidia Control panel at Manage 3D settings and Global Settings. At least this is what OBS producers are saying. I did all this stuff I opened the program as administrator but no results... So can you give me an advice?
If you are having trouble with the graphics processing, you should go to settings, output tab, then click recording. Try using a different combination of recording format and encoder. -Austin
Thank you! Problem solved. I use windows capture now and it works. For display capture I must stop the on board graphic card. I still can't use game capture, but still those 2 methods, window capture and display capture works fine now and covers almost everything.
What type of game is it? If it's a browser game like Happy Wheels, make sure you actually select Browser Source or Window Capture. To make sure that your recording is working properly and your settings are not the problem, I recommend you try recording your screen with Display Capture (or any other source besides Game Capture). Hope this helps! -Austin
I recorded it and the game was having good fps but when i saw the actually footage my my recording the video was going like 1 frames a seccond D: please help.
Hey Everyone! If you're on a Mac and want to use OBS, click the links below! I've made a brand new tutorial! ua-cam.com/video/REMU1QDZzpA/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/REMU1QDZzpA/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/REMU1QDZzpA/v-deo.html -Austin
I'd try experimenting. To maximize quality, you want to maximize bitrate. Because you have a relatively new CPU, you'll want to use more of the CPU when recording. By lowering the CPU usage preset (going from veryfast, to faster, to fast, to medium, etc.) your computer will slowly start experiencing more lag. On the default (veryfast), find what the max bitrate you can record at. Then, lower from veryfast to faster and find the max bitrate again. Just keep repeating this method and keep going slower until you find your max bitrate you can record at. -Austin
Ty, but after recording, when i played the video, the screen was all black. Btw i was recording League of Legends wich is in fullscreen and in OBS i used the "display capture", everything else was the same to what you showed. And the audio was good :) HELP PLEASE
You can try changing the resolution or framerate you record at by going to settings > video, using a faster CPU usage preset by going to settings > output (by default, it is set at veryfast so maybe try superfast or ultrafast) or using VBR instead of CBR. Hope this helps! -Austin
Thank you for helping me the video but I like to use for editing is my MacBook. Its imovie i used it but can make a video about editing for others because most people don't have MacBooks or imacs. These computers are expensive. 6000 dollars for a good MacBook or imac
I've made an updated video on how to record with OBS! Check it out here! ua-cam.com/video/92bGkQKeBsQ/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/92bGkQKeBsQ/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/92bGkQKeBsQ/v-deo.html -Austin
Heey thank you for this video! So ok everything works but i'm using OBS to record my drawing process. When i look back at the video recording the quality is bad. I put the bitrate on 30000 but it's still the same. What am i missing? I look at my art i see smooth lines and the recording has a slight different color and the lines aren't so smooth. Also the program that i draw in looks bad on the recording. Hope you can help :)
I have a few suggestions. A lot of what I'm about to say I've covered in my OBS recording settings video I made two weeks ago, so I recommend you check it out: ua-cam.com/video/5L9idxI-lOo/v-deo.html To sum up that video you should: - go to settings, and select video on the left toolbar on your screen. Change the downscale filter to Lanczos and make sure both of the listed screen resolutions are set to 1920 x 1080. - go to settings, select output on the left toolbar, and go to the recording tab. Make sure the rate control is on CBR. Also, try lowering the CPU Usage Preset (from veryfast to faster, fast, etc.) and try increasing the Bitrate in increments of 5000 until you start to experience lag. (Make sure you are in the recording tab and not the streaming tab) - go to settings, select advanced on the left toolbar, and adjust the process priority from Normal to Above Normal or High. Hopefully some of these tips help! -Austin
Hey Austin, i should have mentioned that i also watched your other video. I tried everything that you mentioned. I do have more encoder options that i'm also trying out but so far nothing changed. I really want to solve it because it should be possible to fix. :
If the changes I've suggested haven't made a difference, we've got some problems. To make sure that we are adjusting the right settings, just for testing purposes, lets try DECREASING our bitrate to something really low like 5000. If this decreases the quality dramatically, that we means that our changes are actually making a difference. Also, when you're viewing the video, are you viewing the video in a video editor (like Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, Movie Maker etc.) or just as the .mp4 file? If you are viewing the file by using Windows Media Player or Movies, the video quality may SOMETIMES appear choppy and blurry depending on the quality of your computer. Also, it's worth noting that video quality will ALWAYS look worse in any video editor than if we were to view the file Movies or Windows Media Player. I recommend you try recording a short 30 second video of you drawing and upload it straight to UA-cam as private video (don't edit it whatsoever). Let the video process on UA-cam and try watching it. Let me know what the quality is like while watching through your browser. Let me know if any of this works! -Austin
Hey i tested decreasing the bitrate and that doesn't make any difference. I even tried 50000 and 5000. I'm viewing the video as a mp4 file on Windows Media Player.(By the way if it's ok i added you on Skype makes chatting a bit easier)
@@Sasuworld it depends on storage and your internet if your internet is bad the quality of video will be bad and it don't matter if put you 5000 or other numbers it matters on your internet. Its probably internet or the computer cant handle the obs
Really great video, thanks for your help! In recording settings I can't change rate control - whatever I choose it sets CBR and rate control is fixed to 2500... can't change it either. I am impressed, you are a legend dude! 9:38 instead of 10:01 and millions of ads. By the way, thanks!
This was SUPER helpful. I am going to master OBS and probably use it for most of my videos now. You Rock
Thank you so much for this video! I just installed OBS yesterday and couldn't figure out how to record my screen. You saved me several hours of frustration.

Thanks for this video....i literally wasted 1 hour on trail and error method to findout. Your video helped a lot.

Starting a channel thanks for the crash course really needed it. Very well done mate.
Love how you talked in one side of the mic so that I hear your voice mostly on my left ear
Thanks dude!!!! This helps me out a ton!!! Can't tell you how long I've looked for a video like this.
Thank you, you've shared everything in detail and now i can easily record gameplays without having Quality issues !!

Hi. Its very nice and helpful video. But my desktop audio is low in volume. I'm using a headset with microphone.
Great video 🤝
what is the best app to watch your recordings in? need answer now!
Pretty much all I needed to know after installing this software. Thanks brother.
Hey, Just curious as to why when i record with OBS, I get a little lag. I tried changing the bitrate but no luck.
My picture does not come up on the big screen at the 6:00 point and it records a black screen with audio.

I tried it, but unfortunately my Game is not coming up on OBS screen. I did what you said at the end but game screen not coming up on OBS screen.

Hey, when I stopped record, watched my video its so laggy like i did 60fps then 30fps, same.
PLS HELP
how do you watch your video after bro?
Having trouble. I'm in properties in >mode/capture specific win
Change window>select game then select ok. Nothing happens. Just remains a blank screen. Why!
Thanks alot for this. I've been struggling with setting this up and you helped me quite a bit! Cheers.
I did the same thing but when i record the window in recording doesn’t move so i get a still image with the audio
at 8:50 you are dropping a file into sony vedios or vedius or something that i can't find with google. could it be sony vegas?
Yes, that editing program is Sony Vegas Pro 13. I just wanted to show that you can upload it straight to UA-cam OR edit it in an editing program first.

and on the other hand for only 5 bucks more i get to burn my stuff directly to disk and a few other options.
first i have to get OBS working.
so before i buy any of those i am working out how to get OBS to record just the window of the game.
right now if i run a game, black desert specifically here and i'll be trying fallout 4 next i have to capture the entire output to that video card, in this case the on-board video since it somehow refuses to see my nvidea gtx 760.
it's good to have multiple monitors so that i can place stuff around and have the on-board video card running one of those monitors and the plugin card running the other two.
i'm still working on it, and this video of yours gave me a few clues, so i'll continue.

Just try my tutorial, my settings will get you the BEST FPS for your PC. Trust me, it was laggy for me too. ;)
did you use obs while recording this video
Yes he did because if you look down the bottom the screen you will find obs
so my videos are white and when I open them it just says which app do you want to open this with please help
Extremely helpful video thanks man! keep up the video grind
Hey bro I record something and it just doesn't save? or if it does it saves as a quicktime player? Please help!!!!
When I choose a specific window all I got was a black window. I have never recorded anything before so I dont know the reason why that happend
HorsePlayGaming, could you please tell whether it is possible to record an online game with OBS?

how do you edit the vid that you recorded
Hey what do i do when i do the capture and it is just black...
@HorsePlayGaming How Do SetUp Your Background Cam??? Can You Teach Me
I record my screen with OBS and my facecam with my camera. Then, after I'm done recording, I load all the files into an editing program where I synchronize the clips together and put my face in the top right corner.

I have tried this out a lot of different ways, and there are multiple games that I'm trying to record. When I go to game capture, however, and click any of the games, they don't show on OBS. The screen is still black. How can I fix this?

Okay so things record and go to the folder I see the picture of the video but the folder is empty
@HorsePlayGaming how can I put video at the right corner like you did in this video ?
You can either:
- add a webcam as a video source in OBS and move the video source into one of the screen's corners
or
- if you use an external camera like me, record from the camera and computer separately and put the clips together in an editing program like Sony Vegas.
-Austin
Thanks
Hello! This worked alot! but the video came out quite laggy any idea on how to fix that bro???
Decrease your bitrate or try using a faster encoding like superfast or ultrafast.
-Austin
ok i will try thx for being active thats a sub and a like :D
Plz tell me can I record without hot keys
It's working wonders for me. I can record 1080p with 60 fps ! Only issue is that for some reason, When I record, it doesn't fill the screen even when the game is full screen.
this video was very helpful and was easy to understand
It was really helpful and a great video, although I lost you at 6:01 because my Minecraft wasn’t showing on the screen like yours was. It’s probably just my computer. But great vid notheless
Hey... I tried to use this for animal jam, then it wouldn’t let me capture the specific window. Please please tell me how to fix this
Hey, so I have like 2 windows that I could record. How do I make it into 1? And also if I record only mic audio comes and the video is just black.
How can you mix to videos together
Before uploading i watched my video and It had no audio do you know what I can do to fix this?
To record your audio, you have to add an audio source under the sources tab. If you want to record your computer sound, add an audio output capture. If you want to record from a microphone, add an audio input capture. You may want to do a couple sample recordings to make sure that the right output is being recorded.

Alright so after some tinkering I got rid of that black screen, everything seemed all good. Except I noticed that when recording I either can only hear the game or myself. I tried raising the volumes of the mic and what not but like I said, it seems to be one or the other. Anyone know a way to fix this?
wow! This was a FANTASTIC tutorial. Thanks!
10/10 Video. amazing job man.
How do you put your game on the screen
Its black for me! i tried everything, but i cant find the game window...
-Austin
MAT delete the source and put the game again that was my problem
why does every one else obs recorder videos look so good on youtube mine end up having a weird almost grainey texture around some part of the screen?
Increase the bitrate in the video settings! It'll increase the quality.
-Austin
I have but (bitrate=70000) and the video looks grate on my computer but ounce its uploaded it gets that grainy thing a bit.
When I add new source and I set overwatch, screen is black.
Great tutorial. Thanks for uploading!
When ever I record with it it is really choppy, any idea how to fix that?
I recorded it and the game was having good fps but when i saw the actually footage my my recording the video was going like 1 frames a seccond D: please help.

Worked! :D Thank you so mutch you got a new subscriber
when I record it only records saves a few seconds of it but when I see the recording time it says that I was actually recording for six minutes.
If you just record with your laptop without anything does audio pick up?
No. If you want to record your desktop audio, mic audio, etc. you have to set it up as an audio output or input respectively.
-Austin
Still no work I cant put it in that vindow stage and when i do when i drag it to rake
It work but it lagging and it didn’t rec the whole thing can u help me out
Thank you so so much I’m going to do this as soon as I get a chance. Wish me luck!
I have an Intel core i7-6700k should I put it on very fast?
I'd try experimenting. To maximize quality, you want to maximize bitrate. Because you have a relatively new CPU, you'll want to use more of the CPU when recording. By lowering the CPU usage preset (going from veryfast, to faster, to fast, to medium, etc.) your computer will slowly start experiencing more lag.
On the default (veryfast), find what the max bitrate you can record at. Then, lower from veryfast to faster and find the max bitrate again. Just keep repeating this method and keep going slower until you find your max bitrate you can record at.

HorsePlayGaming OMG YOU REPLIED THANK YOU MAN
HorsePlayGaming THANKS FOR THE ADVICE
HorsePlayGaming first time a UA-camr replies to me😂😂
No problem!

Ty, but after recording, when i played the video, the screen was all black. Btw i was recording League of Legends wich is in fullscreen and in OBS i used the "display capture", everything else was the same to what you showed. And the audio was good :)
HELP PLEASE
Andjeo Cuvar Its easy, just insert screen recorder and game capture at the bottom left, but the thing next to the bottom left.
Nobins Did it already, ty
Andjeo Cuvar No problem.
I try changing the Bitrate and my recording still lags, any suggestions?
You can try changing the resolution or framerate you record at by going to settings > video, using a faster CPU usage preset by going to settings > output (by default, it is set at veryfast so maybe try superfast or ultrafast) or using VBR instead of CBR. Hope this helps!
-Austin
Thank you for helping me the video but I like to use for editing is my MacBook. Its imovie i used it but can make a video about editing for others because most people don't have MacBooks or imacs. These computers are expensive. 6000 dollars for a good MacBook or imac
How do u record with facecam
Do you have to do this everytime to record?
Nope! By programming a scene for each game you play, you can just select the corresponding scene for the game you are currently recording.
-Austin
Thx for replying that fast u deserve more subs I will tell my friends bout u
But I don't really know how to do that lol but thx u are the best

Great tutorial for noobs! Thanks man.
i have preview on and don't see anything please help
Output / output mode is not possible to set. The menu is not clickable at all.
A lot of what I'm about to say I've covered in my OBS recording settings video I made two weeks ago, so I recommend you check it out: ua-cam.com/video/5L9idxI-lOo/v-deo.html
To sum up that video you should:
- go to settings, and select video on the left toolbar on your screen.
(Make sure you are in the recording tab and not the streaming tab)
- go to settings, select advanced on the left toolbar, and adjust the process priority from Normal to Above Normal or High.
Does it record other peoples voices as well.
Yes! If you're using skype, discord, game chat, or any other program or game that outputs audio, it will be recorded!
-Austin
it should record all of the desktop sounds yeah
When I click the certain window it doesn't show. HELP!
Spot on dude - worked first time - Thank you!
IDK why but when i tried recording my screen wich was Roblox for a test and it just kept on being a Black screen
It's OK, don't worry about that. If isn't working just try my tutorial maybe that will help you.
hay man! Great tutorial! Is just what I needed! OBS works fine for me. I edited the movie after in Adobe Premiere Pro CC.
Yeh! I just can start youtuber journey with this! Thanks!
