Macklemore & Ryan Lewis: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Tears and laughter in the span of about 15 minutes - that's what's so astonishing about these Macklemore & Ryan Lewis songs.
The first time I heard "Same Love," it brought tears to the eyes of a roomful of people, myself included. The song is about equality, specifically gay rights, with an unambiguous message: "It's human rights for everybody / There is no difference." Then, in a flip of a backing-track beat, Macklemore (a.k.a. Ben Haggerty) sings about wearing a velour jumpsuit and some house slippers, "grandpa style."
The contrast in these songs, "Same Love" and "Thrift Shop," makes the levity all that much memorable; as producer, Ryan Lewis is a master at the hook and clever with the melody. But this Tiny Desk Concert didn't end there: The live, sweet, soulful sounds of singer Ray Dalton belting, "Like the ceiling can't hold us" had Macklemore standing on my desk and shaking the dust off the ceiling tiles. Watching this video fills me with that inspirational feeling we shared watching it happen: I'm still cleaning dust around my desk, but it only makes me smile. --BOB BOILEN

who came here after his "Hinds Hall" song on may 2024 🔥🙌🤍!!!
Macklemore always on the right side of history
*raises hand* 🔥
same here came after hind's hall song , this men is a legend
Anyone here in May 2024?
Man, revisiting this tiny desk in 2024 knowing full well that this man is raising a couple of amazing kids is just mind boggling. His heart, soul, and skill went no where but UP.
His breath control is sickening! He sounds just like the studio version. This is so rare for rappers.
We need him back live
it took youtube 8 years to recommend this...
Clark Webb same. So good it was worth the wait.
Same. They made the right decision
Wow! Same here!
he he.
HA! Just got it today. Did they even have recommendations back in 2012?
man at times like these, we need another Macklemore tiny desk or concert
Im telling you this is comfort food for me
These days, glorious, good old days
Lol wut
Him and chancd man
so true
ray dalton just seems like a genuinely nice guy. he just looks so happy the whole time while he just waits patiently for his time to shine
yeah It made me smile when he started singing
And WHAT a VOICE....pure velvet.
He is one of a kind! I met him back in 2011 or 2012. He was so sweet! Wonder where he is now...
He seems very polite
wit his bad gold tie haha just a treasure
Its 2020 and I’m still trying to figure out how I can be as cool as occasional trumpet guy
Have you gotten a trumpet yet?
Dans_Drone_Pictures he’s not Miles Davis. Miles Davis is cool. Be cool like Miles Davis.
@@oar5926 if peeing your pants is cool...
Slide whistle is a solid back up option
Idk why nobody has corrected this but a trumpet doesnt have keys, it doesnt involve finger play... Thats a cornet... Trumpets are used by manipulating your lips but no real hand work
You never know how talented someone is until you see them live at the tiny desk! Macklemore just killed it. Such passion.
yess
Talented is an understatement
@@dgmclar regardless he performed it and it's amazing
@@dgmclar That made me sad. I would like to believe it was live? Otherwise that throws the entire integrity of NPR under the bus.
true words
10 freakin' years later... Hands up who is here! 🔥
Ray Dalton and his church claps give me life still in 2020.
OMG....that's all I can say
yaaaas! love his voiceeee!
Can't help but respect a man who treats a Tiny Desk like a MSG stage!
more than agree, and its look like the crowd not entire high?
Lol yes!
He is him
I wonder where Macklemore gets his high energy from. He still gives his all even performing in front of a few people.
I think he truly enjoys what he does.
actually he's preforming for over a million ppl ....and counting
These few people are some of the smartest, coolest people on earth
It's called passion
***** Yes, Passion! 5-hour Energy's new flavor 'Passion Fruit' has Zero Sugars and Zero Net-Carbs. This gives Mac and Ryan plenty of energy, to overcome come homophobia as well as that "2:30 feeling."
10 years later this performance still serves chills up and down the whole body
Give the man a body bag. He murdered that place
same here, bro! 11 years already and counting...
10 yrs later and this performance is still dope. Dude definitely brings the vibe.
I come back to this every 3 or 4 months to restore my soul.

YUP! Same! Feels so good~

Something about a good live performance packs more punch than the studio recorded songs. It's palpable!

The trumpet guy is literally the definition of a vibe.
like an empty show with a trumpet player vibe
You might be cool, but you're never gonna be as cool as the dude on trumpet...
CurlsPearls&OtherWorlds one can dream tho 😎
He's not even playing the trumpet parts lol
Are you simple? if you honestly think that man isn't playing that trumpet part you sir are dense!
No no hes playing THE trumpet, but hes not playing a collection of musical lines written FOR trumpet as there is no trumpet in the songs. He is mostly playing saxophone parts, etc.
Trumpet is playing him
No matter how many times I hear
"Thrift Shop", it just never gets old.
me too great song
never thought id see macklemore jumping in circles saying "LETS GOO"
We need another!!!
America needs more of Macklemore's love-based songs right now.

ryan lewis is like that awkward super high friend that you decide to bring with you because your havin a good time
nah. ryan lewis is that dude that made every sound you're hearing and deserves to be sitting there. every hip hop artist should give so much credit to their producers.
@@IrvSauce Ryan Lewis was one of the key reasons behind Macklemore’s success, both of them are super talented, and together they make masterpieces!
we need him back!
Thrift shop live like that... He friggin nailed it!
I just want 1% of Macklemore's energy, what a singer and showman!
The fact that this video is almost a decade ago is living in my mind rent free
Right? Where has the time gone
This is what pure joy looks and sounds like.
Ray Dalton look's like the nicest guy on earth xd
I just found these dudes
I am down a huge rabbit hole
I'm 60, and his mysic speaks to my soul. Beillant has no age ❤
That first song... Same Love... I've heard it before but never really loved it or paid too much attention to it. Perhaps because of the unique format of this tiny desk concert, I gave it a genuine listen this time. It's a much more heartfelt and powerful song than I previously realized. It kinda reminded me of a sermon, but predicated on compassion and with universal applicability.
Its beautiful❤
Yep
Same
It’s a very powerful song imdeeed
When you think of all the things Macklemore has been through, his addiction and how he overcame it through his music. It’s just so touching, you can see he loves doing this. This is not a hobby for him, it’s his life.
Minnie Or maybe the music business is just a way for him to afford quality drugs?
@@wyganter haha...the other side of the coin....✌
@@wyganter addiction doesn’t really work like that….pretty hard to keep a job with the kind of relationship he has had with substances. It’s not impossible, but unlikely, that he’d be performing this well if he were using before this performance. Plus, I don’t know why he would be so open about his various relapses if he was secretly always using…🤷🏻♀️
Uh, for EVERYONE at this level it's not a hobby. ??? Weird comment.
@@darinz7182 Whats even weirder is this isn't his life at all. He hasn't been that active since he had his kid. He puts his family first, family is his life. Music is his profession or his job, sure he enjoys it but it doesn't come before family.
I give Macklemore so much props for actually sounding the same on record as he does in a tiny desk concert.
the only thing that REALLY annoys me is, that Macklemore has no live band! It's just Ryan Lewis, sitting behind his Mac and playing the track. It would be so much more intense, if there were some cool dudes who play the piano, drums and stuff like that. :/ But yeah....guess that won't change :D But I love his music though! Great musician
Then I've got a tip for you... Check out 'Peter Fox' in almost any life performance... THAT is how a band should sound when doing a boombastic live performance.
check his similar performance on KEXP. theres a great video on youtube, with a full live band
micglou Yeah, i know him :D His live band is amazing! But I'm not such a big fan of his music though :/ are you from Germany?
Ross Martin
thanks for the hint, i absolutely love it!
You've obviously never been to a Macklemore and Ryan Lewis concert if you think all Ryan does is sit behind his Mac
it’s crazy how they all sound the same as the studio omg
for all the controversy and negativity Macklemore received, i still think to this day that the heist was an awesome album. i love coming back to all these great tracks
Four notes into "Same Love" and I'm already crying.
Same here! Love is patience, love is kind!
I cry every time I hear this song ❤️
okay so it’s not just me 😭
Moves me too
Ohhh same I'm sobbing 😭😭💞💞💞
I was never a fan of Macklemore’s for reasons I’m unsure of. Until I saw this. The passion and authenticity is 2nd to none. Big props to guy, he plays for a dozen people the same as he would for 50k. True artistry
Listen to "neon cathedral". A song about his struggle with alcoholism. It's painful how much he pours into his music.
Tiny desk gives artists a whole new respect from me
Still coming back after all these years. Definitely a top 5 NPR moment.

I forget how much I love Macklemore until I listen to him
Ray Daltons awkward dancing and clapping is what helps me get out of bed. I mean his voice daymn. But his dancing makes it
Burnt Spoon I feel bad for guy cause they still bit his voice in a backing track. Was sad cause his voice is so good live
he's a legend
Caleb westerdaal Most of the music was just the same studio recording. It just takes all the fun out of a live performance.
he was only 21 when this was recorded. crazy.
2012 was truly one of the greatest years
Same Love is a once in a decade song. Will always remain important and true.
he got UP ON THE tiny desk macklemore brings it everywhere he goes I love him
I've never seen people be this cool at 2 pm on a Monday

The fact that I’m watching this now at 26 years old and seeing that this was uploaded 9 years ago makes me feels old af.
First saw this while locked up. We were allowed tablets with very little content allowed. Tiny desk concert was one of them. This and many others helped me move forward. Thank you.
This is as great a Tiny Desk as I've ever heard, seen, witnessed and grown from.
Macklemore was important to hip hop, it’s sad people didn’t accept him. He was an amazing story teller.
Y’all talking about him like he’s dead lol
Loved this but can't help thinking it would have been amazing if they performed it acoustically.

Watching Ray Dalton thoroughly enjoying himself the entire time made my day ❤
They should all come back and do another one, its been so long 😢💙
No matter the context, album, concert or more alternative places like tiny desk, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are always the way they are. No surprises, just pure joyfulness.
They should really have Childish Gambino do a show i would like to see that one

I guess he wouldnt be able to dance on a tiny desk though. Lol
He can't. They require shirts in that building.
My brother made me watch this and i had never even heard of Macklemore. We make our Eskimo mother watch this npr...and she loves it❤😂😂
Macklemore got way to much hate. He’s a real artist. When he one the Grammy people went from accepting him to thinking he was a culture vulture. Does loves hip hop and pays homage to it all the time throughout his career. He’s one of the realest dudes in the industry and makes great music.
Huge respect for this guy. They showed this video at High Performance Academy as an example of someone who brings the joy and passion authentically. In a space like this, he definitely brings it!
I switch tabs for one minute and he's on the freakin table. Madman. Love him.
One day many years ago, I heard this song on the radio, and for many years I tried to find it. Until now, I didnt know that he was the singer, or even the name of the song. And now here it is, this was my time to find it again. Thank you.
I'm a hard rock guy. Can't stop coming back to this. Fantastic
7 years ater, this is still my favorite tiny desk.
No matter how big or small the audience, you perform like it's a stadium full. Let's go!!!!
UA-cam, WHY did you take 8 years to recommand me this masterpiece ????? Tell me why, just why ?
Back when we were happy and didn’t know it.

Loooooove her!!!!!
Yes hhhhh she arrrrrrived to point 👌😂😂

Does anyone know her?
Probably the highest energy finale performance I’ve seen on here
This or blue man group definitely!
Everybody should appreciate Ray Dalton's voice, it sounds really consistent. He sounds so good.
These songs still feel relevant and new to me, so it's weird to think that this was 2012. That first song _(Same Love)_ was a really bold thing to do at the time, as we were still 3 years (!) away from marriage equality. Obviously nobody can say how much influence any one event had on the eventual outcome, but stuff like that is how society moves forward - you and defend the things that need defending and don't back down.
Good for Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and everyone involved in the song.
Truth! 💜✊ Still bold and still touched my heart.
I have so much respect for this man, for that room, for NPR. Music, the world's medicine. Can cure a broken heart, a dying man's agony and the hatred of an entire race. But no matter the dosage of medicine, "we have to change us."
I have to agree, we always hear that laughter is medicine and that it true, it’s very therapeutic but music can comfort a soul in ways nothing else can. It cuts through pain and for me even though dementia when your soul’s adrift. Sometimes I think musicians don’t realize the power they hold.
Props for sounding exactly the same live, as on album.
Macklemore and Co absolutely destroyed this tiny desk performance. Dudes f’n rock
THAT's a great day at work! I love seeing the girl in the back shaking it!
Macklemore is suchhhhh a vibe. I will never get tired of him. ❤
Reminds me of a good time in my life. Crazy how time flies.
Dalton’s voice is amazing.
Ray Dalton has such a beautiful voice !
incredible isn't he
Yes!!!
Macklemore is good, but Ray Dalton is really the heart of Cant Hold Us.

I love ray dalton but I would say is Ryan lewis with the sickest beat ever
Not being racist but is he the black guy? I've always thought his voice was the GOAT
