I have a dwarf Buddleja which does well in a pot. I wasn't sure how to prune it for the first time so hacked away and it was fine. When is this rain ever going to stop? I managed to get a lot done yesterday but am still waiting to get my first grass cut done. Let's hope it's nice over Easter. Hope you both have a good one.
They are really forgiving plants which makes pruning easy, good that you just gave it a go! The rain seem to be never ending. We cut our grass for the fist time about a week ago on a sunny day but its all sodden again now, particularly the bit closest to the house. Fingers crossed we get some dry days over Easter and you can get yours cut. Take care xxxx
If you let the stems get too woody, they become brittle and can snap. I sadly left one to grow too much because the butterflies adored it. It was a yellow pop pom shaped flower and flowered late into the autumn. the stem became very twisted and quite attractive. But it became unstable and cracked. Sadly it had to go or it was going to go straight through my greenhouse.
That's a shame, they do get brittle when left to get too woody. At least your greenhouse was saved. A similar thing happened with Andrew's parents Buddleja and some of it snapped in the wind but luckily there wasn't damage to the garden and it survived after a cut back. Thanks for watching Laura.
Despite their names they are actually awful for butterflies due to giving up little in the way of food for them. Would be much better to provide a broad range of open petal flowers for them.
We have to disagree with that statement, according to advice from the butterfly conservation and the RHS, Buddlejas are a great source of nectar for butterflies (and other pollinators). Yes they need other plants to support them, but a buddleja is one of the best for nectar, especially in terms of shrubs. We'd be interested to know where you found your information from.
I tend to disagree with this. I have 4 buddleias in my garden they are always full of butterflies, bees, insects and moths during flowering@@MadAboutGardening
I just happened upon your channel, it’s lovely thank you. When is the best time of year to prune a butterfly bush? I live in NE America.
The best time is the spring as the shrub is coming into growth after winter. Thanks for watching and glad you found us.
